War in Ukraine today: latest news, September 14, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 568th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian occupiers continue to violate the International Humanitarian Law by targeting and shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian infrastructure, and terrorising civilians.

The occupiers attacked Ukraine with 22 Shahed-136/131 kamikaze drones, 17 of which were brought down by Ukrainian air defense.

There were 29 combat engagements. The enemy launched 2 missiles, 92 air strikes, 42 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian targets in various settlements. According to updated information, the occupier attacked Ukraine with 47 Shahed-136/131 kamikaze drones, 35 of these UAVs were brought down by Ukrainian air defense. The russian terrorist attacks have killed and wounded civilians. The attacks destroyed or damaged port infrastructure, private housing, and other civilian infrastructure.

The settlements of Morokhovets, Pletenivka, Petropavlivka, Kyslivka, Kharkiv oblast, Stepok, Sumy oblast; Novoselivske, Novojehorivka, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast, Siversk, Spirne, Kurdiumivka, Klishchiivka, Krasnohorivka, New York, Donetsk oblast, Robotyne, Zapasne, Zaporizhzhia oblast, Odradokamyanka, and Prydniprovske, Kherson oblast were hit by air strikes.

About 100 settlements in Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson oblasts came under artillery fire.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to defend in the east and the south of Ukraine, conduct the offensive on Melitopol axis, and offensive operations on Bakhmut axis. As they destroy the enemy, they liberate the temporarily occupied territories and consolidate new positions.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy  continues to maintain a group of troops safeguarding the state border. The enemy troops conduct active sabotage activities in the border areas to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened axes. They increase the density of minefields along the state border in Belgorod oblast, russia.

Towards Kupiansk and Bakhmut, the enemy does not abandon its attempts to break through the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas north-east of Berestove, Kharkiv oblast, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast, and Bohdanivka, Donetsk oblast. In turn, the Ukrainian offensive operations had partial success in the vicinity of Bakhmut, Klischiivka, Andriivka, and Kurdiumivka, Donetsk oblast, the enemy has suffered  losses in manpower and equipment.

The Ukrainian defenders are holding the defense of Mariinka, where the enemy made 14 unsuccessful attempts to force our units out of their positions during. In addition, all enemy attacks in the vicinity of Mala Tokmachka and Verbove, Zaporizhzhia oblast resulted in significant losses in both manpower and equipment for the occupiers. At the same time, towards Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Shakhtarsk, the Armed Forces  maintain the initiative, continuing to put pressure on the enemy, conduct assault operations, and liberate Ukrainian territories.

Towards Melitopol, the Armed Forces continue their offensive operation, inflicting significant losses in manpower and equipment to the occupation forces.

Towards Kherson, the Armed Forces continue to conduct counter-battery fire, destroy warehouses, and successfully strike behind the enemy lines.

The Ukrainian Air Forces launched 12 air strikes on buildups of troops, weapons, and military equipment, and 2 strikes on the anti-aircraft missile systems.

The Ukrainian missile, artillery, and unmanned aerial systems troops hit 1 command post, 1 anti-aircraft missile system, 1 concentration of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 15 artillery systems, and 2 ammunition depots, and 1 electronic warfare station of the adversary.


Military counterintelligence of the National Security Agency and the Chief Intelligence Office conducted a unique special operation near Yevpatoria. The Russian air defense complex “Triumph” worth 1.2 billion dollars was destroyed.

The Prosecutor’s General Office Start reported about launching the operations of the field office of the International Criminal Court. Prosecutor General Andrey Kostin, this is a new chapter of their cooperation. It will help strengthen the interaction between Ukraine and the International Criminal Court, increase the efficiency and promptness of response to the crimes that russia continues to commit against Ukraine and Ukrainians every day.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Hanna Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defence, informed that the situation in Marinka and Avdiivka has worsened. Also russian troops increased the number of attacks and assaults in this area. Towards Lyman-Kupiansk, russians reduced their activity. Ukrainian troops are gradually advancing towards Bakhmut.

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that during the day, the invaders launched air strikes on the outskirts of Kharkiv, Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions.  Also russian troops launched more than 13 artillery and mortar attacks on the civilian infrastructure of the border areas.

The invaders shelled the downtown Vovchansk at night, around 11:40 pm. The administrative building was destroyed. According to preliminary information, the attack was conducted with 152-calibre artillery.

The shelling broke windows in the administrative building and damaged 1 private building, 1 two-storey residential building, 4 cars in Velykyi Burluk settlement, Kupiansk region, at 1:25 am. There were no casualties.

The enemy shelled  Cherneshchyna village of Borove community, Izium region, with artillery at 5 pm. The property of an agricultural company was damaged.

A combine harvester exploded on an anti-tank mine in Blahodatne village, Chuhuiv region, during agricultural work in the field at around 11:20 am.  A 51-year-old man was injured, he received explosive injuries and burns, his condition is moderate.

Pyrotechnic units of the region examined 5.2 hectares of territory and defused 73 explosive ordnance. The work involved 33 pyrotechnic crews of the State Emergency Service (165 people and 65 pieces of equipment).

Donetsk oblast

Kovalov, Spokesman of the General Staff, reported that Ukrainian troops have had partial success in Klishchiivka, Andriivka and Kurdiumivka. Defence forces continue to advance south of Bakhmut.

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, towards Volnovakha, 10 buildings in Novoukrainka were damaged and there were 30 attacks on Vuhledar. 18 buildings were damaged in Shakhtarske of Velyka Novosilka community.

Towards Donetsk, 1 person was injured and building on three streets damaged in Avdiivka. In Marinka community, Krasnohorivka, Maksymilianivka and Heorhiivka were under attack. Kurakhove community was attacked 4 times, specifically, Kurakhove, Ostrivske and Stepanivka were targeted.

Towards Horlivka, 2 buildings were damaged: in Toretsk and Chasiv Yar. The outskirts of Kostiantynivka community were shelled.

Towards Lysychansk, 1 building was destroyed and 1 damaged in Torske of Lyman community.

Searchers from the Plastdarm unit removed more than half a hundred bodies of dead russian soldiers from the battlefield near Klishchiivka village, near Bakhmut. They also found the bodies of killed Ukrainian soldiers and, probably, civilians. Searchers are examining the bodies and sending them for forensic examination. The bodies of russian soldiers will be exchanged for the killed Ukrainian soldiers.

Luhansk oblast

In Luhansk oblast, Novoselivske, Novoyehorivka and Bilohorivka were hit by airstrikes. Bilohorivka was hit by artillery and mortar shelling. During the day, the enemy fired 141 shots (528 shells).

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar stated that the situation is escalating in Maryinka and Avdiivka, but the Armed Forces are repelling enemy attacks. The russian military uses neighboring villages (Opytne, Kruta Balka, Vodyane and others) to storm in this direction, and the russian army has been trying to take control of Avdiyivka and Maryinka for about a year.

According to British intelligence, russia has transferred the newly formed 25th Combined Arms Army, which it planned to deploy in December of this year, to Luhansk oblast.

Ukrainian Eastern Group of Forces Spokesperson Ilya Yevlash stated that the russian army fired more than 90 times a day at Serebryansk forestry in Luhansk oblast.

According to Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the occupation administration of Luhansk oblast has issued an order to refuse any medical assistance in the absence of medical insurance, which can only be obtained with a russian passport. Thus, the occupiers want to push people to get a russian passport.

According to calculations presented by Luhansk Regional Military Administration, residents of the Severodonetsk district filed almost 36 300 reports of destroyed housing out of 40 600 in the oblast. Among the objects destroyed by russia, information is provided on 28 333 apartments, 11 254 houses, and 1 036 premises.

In order to recapture the lost positions, the russians are transferring units consisting of former prisoners to problem areas of the front, says Andrii Kovalev, spokesman of the General Staff. Thus, 120 former “convicts” were transported from Luhansk to Melitopol so that they could participate in the so-called “meat grinder”.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Kyiv RMA reported that in Kyiv oblast, mechanisms for employing internally displaced persons are being improved and relocated businesses are being developed. They are currently working on the organisation and conduct of a training course for start-up entrepreneurs and those wishing to start their own business.

According to Kyiv RMA, in Irpin, another apartment building destroyed by the russians is being prepared for rebuilding. The repair of the building involves the dismantling of 4-6 entrances and their complete reconstruction with the renewal of life support networks, and the restoration of damaged apartments.

Kyiv Municipal State Administration reported that Ukraine’s first category B driving courses for women in difficult life circumstances due to the war – “Rights Empower” – have been opened in Kyiv. The courses include both theoretical and practical training to provide women with the necessary skills to drive safely. 

Zhytomyr oblast

The press service of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Zhytomyr Oblast reported that on September 13, 10 residents of Donetsk Oblast arrived in Berdychiv, Zhytomyr Oblast, by evacuation train.  The people came from the areas of active hostilities. Among them are one child and two people with disabilities. The IDPs were met at the railway station by psychologists and other employees of the State Emergency Service, police, volunteers and government officials. At the railway station, people received financial assistance from the state.

According to Zhytomyr RMA, In Zhytomyr Oblast, a car was delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The SUV was purchased by an organisation called the Ukrainian Rescue Service.

This year, 134 388 students will study in schools in the Zhytomyr Oblast. This number of students was divided into 7,758 classes, of which 1,395 are inclusive.  3,037 students belong to the IDP category.

Sumy oblast

 According to Sumy RMA, the territorial defence of Sumy Oblast destroyed a russian Shahed drone at night. There were also three attacks on the border. There were four explosions. The shelling affected Yunakivska and Novoslobidska communities.

In the Yunakivska community, a store was hit, which caused a fire. The enemy also fired from artillery. There were two explosions. In Novoslobidska community, an enemy UAV hit a non-functioning public bath. A fire broke out.

Demining works are being intensified in the region. Another 230 hectares remain potentially dangerous, including agricultural areas. As of the end of August this year, 1,965.5 hectares have been surveyed, more than 2,000 hectares have been cleared of mines, and almost a thousand pieces of explosive ordnance have been found and destroyed.

The families of the fallen soldiers received awards of various levels in Sumy. State awards were presented to the families of 27 fallen defenders of Ukraine.

Volunteers in Sumy Oblast have launched another campaign called Victory Acorn. Anyone can collect acorns and bring them to a collection point. The proceeds will be used to buy a vehicle for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

As part of the video project “Sumy residents. Creators of Victory”, a photo exhibition has been launched. The photos show the stories of Sumy residents who are heroically defending Ukraine’s independence.

Local authorities in Sumy Oblast reported that the Shostka community has recently received 44 more IDPs. Since the beginning of the russian aggression, Shostka has welcomed 5,630 internally displaced persons.

Chernihiv oblast

According to Chernihiv RMA, during the day, the enemy fired at the border of Chernihiv Oblast. Novhorod-Siversk and Semenivka communities came under fire. 

In the Novhorod-Siverska community, there were 42 explosions from MLRS and cannon artillery towards the villages of Osove and Hai.

In Semenivka community, there were 15 explosions, probably from a mortar. There was also an explosion of a kamikaze drone towards villages of Karpovychi, Hremyachka, Yanzhulivka and Bleshnya.

The repair of damaged buildings in the centre of Chernihiv as a result of a missile strike on August 19 continues. The roof is being restored, windows are being glazed and the work is expected to be completed by October 15.

The fourth season of the Merezhivo project has started and will cover Chernihiv Oblast. The aim of the project is to increase the importance of reading in small towns and introduce people to modern Ukrainian literature.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

At night, three Shahed drones were shot down over the region by the Air Force. Overnight, the enemy attacked Nikopol region 4 times. They shelled Marhanets community three times with Grad MRLs and artillery. The invaders also directed a drone at Pershotravneve community of Nikopol region. The attack caused a fire, which was extinguished by rescuers.

A private building was partially destroyed, 6 residential buildings, 8 outbuildings and 3 cars damaged. In the afternoon, the invaders attacked Mezhova community of Synelnykove region. As a result of the attack, dry grass caught on fire which was later extinguished.

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipro Oblast Council, reported that the enemy shelled the Marhanets community of Nikopol region with artillery.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​ Vinnytsia City Council informed that the Interregional Humanitarian Coordination Centre from Vinnytsia oblast delivered another vehicle to the defenders. The vehicles will be passed on to border guards.

A children’s orchestra from Brailov raised funds for the 11th vehicle for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The vehicle was traditionally named Maestro and the keys were given to fellow compatriot Viacheslav Muzyka, who is defending the country at the front.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, said that a third social dormitory for internally displaced people was opened in Kropyvnytskyi. The first four families from Donetsk and Kherson oblasts have already moved in.

Larysa Kudryk, Deputy Head of the City Council’s Health Department, stated that106 people donated blood for the military in one day in Kropyvnytskyi. This is a record number of donors.

Poltava oblast

Valerii Parkhomenko, Deputy Mayor, announced that Poltava has signed a letter of cooperation with the Polish city of Świętochłowice. The cities will cooperate in the fields of culture, art, tourism, education and science, development of youth organisations, local self-government, introduction of entrepreneurship, etc.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Regional Military Administration, confirmed that nine paralympic athletes and their coaches were honoured with the For Merit to Cherkasy Oblast awards.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

At night, russian soldiers attacked Trudove. Outbuildings and warehouses were destroyed.

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that over the past 24 hours, the russian army carried out 153 attacks on 31 localities. There were 138 artillery attacks on the territory of Gulyaypole, Zaliznychne, Novoandriivka, Olhivske, Levadne, Shcherbaky, Zatyshshia, Temyrivka, Kamianske, Stepove and other frontline towns and villages. There were no casualties. 

In the temporarily occupied Tokmak, the russian military has increased the number of patrols and checkpoints, as well as intensified filtration measures.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitaliy Kim, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, said that on the night of  September 14, the russian occupiers attacked Ukraine with groups of Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs. In  Mykolaiv oblast, the air defence forces of the South Air Command destroyed three enemy Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs, and five more were destroyed by other components of the Southern Ukrainian Defence Forces. 

The press service of Mykolaiv Oblast State Administration reported that on  September 13, the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Decentralisation Offering Better Results and Efficiency (DOBRE) Programme signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Interaction. The Memorandum envisages raising awareness and support for the region’s communities on opportunities for their development, developing more effective approaches to budgeting and financial management, improving local self-government, etc. The document was signed by Vitaliy Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, and Brian Kemple, Programme Manager of USAID DOBRE.

Odesa oblast

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Odesa and the region have been under constant rocket attacks, causing significant damage not only to infrastructure and cultural facilities, but also to many residential buildings. In order to overcome the consequences of the attacks, the Global Empowerment Mission’s Window Replacement Project in partnership with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation (HGBF) has been operating in Odesa since July 2023. Over the past month, GEM HGBF has installed about 1,500 new windows for residents of Odesa and Odesa oblast.

The press service of Odesa City Council reported that the Ukrainian future hub educational centre for children was opened in Odesa. This project is implemented by the NEXT Youth Charitable Foundation. The main focus is preschool education, as well as additional classes and non-formal education for children from IDP families and families in difficult life circumstances. All services will be provided free of charge. The main subjects will include Ukrainian, English, Ukrainian history, mathematics, biology, geography, digital security and patriotic education. There will also be master classes, art therapy and creative activities. Psychologists will work with the children. 

Kherson oblast

A field near Mykolaivka in the Kherson region was shelled by russian troops. Two men were injured. They were hospitalised.

At night, the russian army shelled Novodmitrivka in the Kherson region with artillery. A 6-year-old boy was killed, his 13-year-old brother was taken to hospital in serious condition. Three neighbours who tried to help them were also injured.

Kherson Regional Military Administration said that russian military shelled Mykhailivka in Kherson oblast. An administrative building was destroyed. There were no casualties.

An ambulance on its way to help the wounded also came under fire in Novodmitrivka. The vehicle was damaged, the medics were not injured.

General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that during the day, September 14, russian troops shelled more than 10 localities in the Kherson region with artillery and mortars. Among them are Havrylivka, Zmiivka, Tokarivka, Antonivka, Veletynske and Stanislav.

Over the past day, on September 13, russian troops fired 82 times from various types of weapons on the territory of the Kherson region. Residential areas were shelled. The building of an educational institution in Kherson district was damaged. One person was killed and eight were injured.

Eleven children were returned to the government-controlled territory from the temporarily occupied left bank of Kherson oblast. This event was preceded by the intense work of Save Ukraine, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, the Ministry of Reintegration, the Ukrainian Child Rights Network, guardianship and custody authorities, and child services. In total of 112 young residents of Kherson oblast have been returned to the government-controlled territory since the beginning of this year.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Yurii Pohulyajko, Head of the RMA, noted that energy infrastructure facilities were inspected in Volyn oblast. Protection of energy infrastructure facilities is the number one issue during preparation for the autumn-winter period.

Zakarpattia oblast

At the invitation of representatives of the Office of the Parliament of Estonia, a delegation of deputies of Zakarpattia Regional Council is in Tallinn on a working visit. They discussed further cooperation in the fields of education, medicine, energy, and the exchange of experience in implementing reforms.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Recently, Ivano-Frankivsk RMA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the prefecture of Japan. Thus, Prykarpattia became the first oblast that cooperated at the level of oblasts of 2 countries. This was discussed during the meeting of Svitlana Onyshchuk, Head of the RMA, with Yoshihiko Okabe, public figure, expert on economic issues in the state administration system, Ukrainian scholar.

The RMA reported that for the needs of the newly formed infantry battalion from Prykarpattia were sent 30 portable Motorola stations, worth over UAH 1 mln; professional kitchen equipment; 2 quadcopters.

Lviv oblast

With the assistance of the Employment Center in Lviv oblast, over 1,6K IDPs were provided with jobs. Most of them found employment in wholesale and retail trade establishments, processing industry enterprises, transport, health care, and in the field of administrative and auxiliary services.

A family-type children’s home will be built in Lviv oblast within the framework of the First Lady of Ukraine’s Childhood Address project. The project is implemented at the expense of international donors.

Students of grades 1-4 from Pidberiztsivska community received 54 shoulder pads thanks to the Tech Start Up School project and with the support of UNICEF. Among them are children with disabilities, IDPs, as well as those who find themselves in difficult life circumstances.

70 sets with food and hygiene products were handed over to vulnerable categories of the population of Medenytsia community and IDPs. Assistance was provided by the Right to Protection CF with the support of the Peace Winds Japan organization in cooperation with the social protection service of the Medenytsia Settlement Council.

The RMA reported that the Right to Protection CF provided 27 IDPs temporarily living in Velikolyubin community with products and hygiene products.

The RMA reported that at the Skhidnytsky Summer charity event, Skhidnytsk community collected over UAH 140K for a pickup truck for soldiers of the 112th Territorial Defense Brigade of the 3rd Assault Company.

In Chervonohrad region, the event Prevent. Save. Help was held. Over 200 children took part in an educational campaign about the work of rescuers.

In Drohobych region, 11 communist monuments out of 19 discovered have already been dismantled. As of the beginning of September, 74% of Lviv oblast has been cleared of communist-era monuments.

Rivne oblast

Rivne City Council reported that they was send a car for evacuation and other operational purposes for the needs of the 14th separate rifle battalion

Ternopil oblast

Students of Skorykivskyi Lyceum in Pidvolochynsk community joined the all-Ukrainian campaign, which was jointly organized by emergency and juvenile prevention service workers. An informative and Single Safety Lesson was held for children.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Kochubeyiv village military administration reported that residents of Kochubey community sent their own vegetables, fruits, and preserves to defenders in Donetsk oblast.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA presented awards For services to Bukovyna to 6 families of fallen defenders from Bukovyna.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine will receive a grant of $1,25 billion from the US to support vulnerable segments of the population, educators, doctors and finance other priority expenditures of the state budget.

The Pentagon sends a new team of experts to Ukraine to monitor the use of US aid. The US representative started working in Ukraine at the end of August, and additional personnel are expected to arrive by the end of September.

Paul Yunson, Minister of Defense of Sweden, announced that Ukrainian pilots tested Swedish JAS Gripen fighters. “The familiarization training has been completed, and according to the report I received from the Armed Forces, the training went well… As we have said before, we do not rule out sending Gripens to Ukraine,” he said.

Karim Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, announced that the court opened a field office in Kyiv. It will be the largest representation of the court outside The Hague. The office will focus on investigating all evidence of russian war crimes.

Marino Klarych, Head of the grain terminal of the Croatian port of Rijeka, stated that about 100K tonnes of Ukrainian products were exported through the port. According to him, Ukrainian grain began to be exported in May 2022. Grain goes to Croatia by rail through Hungary. As of today, the capacity of the port of Rijeka is 1 mln tonnes of grain. But officials are trying to expand export capacity.

The US introduced sanctions against over 150 companies and individuals involved in the supply of American and other Western technologies and goods to russia. In addition to russian companies, legal entities from Belgium, UAE, Slovenia, Turkey, CAR and others were under sanctions.

The leader of the Republicans in the US Senate called for continued support for Ukraine. “Assisting a democratic partner in protecting its sovereign territory from an unprovoked attack by our common enemy is clearly in America’s interests. Let me emphasize that we are not protecting Ukraine from aggression. Ukrainians themselves are doing this,” said Mitch McConnell, leader of the Republican minority in the upper house of the US Congress.

In Ukraine, training for people with limb amputations was launched in the BetterMe: Health Coaching application. This training program was developed for several months by professional physiotherapists from Ukraine and the US with 14 years of work experience, in particular, in a clinic certified by the US Department of Defense for the rehabilitation of veterans.
