It has been the 680th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

There were 58 combat engagements. The enemy launched a total of 7 missiles and 58x air strikes, 57 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. The russian terrorist attacks have killed and wounded civilians. Residential houses, other civilian and industrial infrastructure were destroyed or damaged.

Air strikes hit Zolochiv, Morokhovets, Pylna, Kolodiazne, Petropavlivka, Kucherivka, Podoly, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast), Stelmakhivka, Novoiehorivka, Serebrianske forestry (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Spirne, Pivnichne, Oleksandropil, Avdiivka, Novomykhailivka, Vodiane (Donetsk oblast), Orikhiv, Novodarivka (Zaporizhzhia oblast), Chervonyi Maiak, and Beryslav (Kherson oblast).

Around 110 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Mykolaiv oblasts were shelled with artillery.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes.

Towards Siversk and Slobodw, the enemy  maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy troops conduct active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened axes. They increase the density of minefields along the state border in Belhorod oblast (russia).

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders repelled 3 enemy attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka and east of Petropavlivka (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Lyman, the enemy did not conduct any offensive (assault) operations.

Towards Bakhmut, the Ukrainian troops repelled 4.attacks near Bohdanivka and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Avdiivka, the Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the enemy who keeps trying to encircle Avdiivka. The Ukrainian soldiers are standing their ground by inflicting major losses to the invaders. The Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled 13 attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, and 19 attacks in the vicinity of Sieverne, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Mariinka, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinity of Heorhiivka and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). The Ukrainian defenders repelled 14.attacks in that area.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the occupiers did not conduct any offensive (assault) operations.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the Ukrainian defenders repelled 1 enemy attack in the vicinity of Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast).

Towards Kherson, the Ukrainian Armed  Forces continue to expand the bridgehead. Despite significant losses, the enemy does not leave its intention to push back.Ukrainian troops from their positions. The enemy made 9x unsuccessful attempts to assault.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their active operations to inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation troops, and exhaust the enemy all along the front line.

The Ukrainian Air Forces launched air strikes on 12 buildups of troops.

The Ukrainian rocket troops and artillery hit 1 buildup of enemy troops, 3 air defense systems, 3 artillery systems, 1 electronic warfare station, and 2 command posts of the russian invaders.


One more child was returned to the territory controlled by Ukraine. This is a 12-year-old boy from the occupied Kherson oblast who lived there with his grandmother.

The first family in Ukraine bought a new house for a housing certificate. In total, 1,826 housing certificates were issued to compensate for completely destroyed housing.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Volodymyr Fito, Head of the public relations service of the Ground Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that russian used thirty UAVs to attack Ukrainian positions towards Lyman-Kupiansk.

There were also 14 attacks from aircraft and helicopters. The enemy was actively dropping guided bombs.

Russian invaders opened fire 613 times yesterday. Three of their assaults were repelled. 171 invaders were eliminated.

Volodymyr Fito added that 44 pieces of enemy equipment were destroyed, including a tank, two BMP-2s and two MT-LBs.

In December, Ukrainian defenders eliminated and injured over 14,000 invaders and burned 1,236 pieces of enemy equipment, such as, over 160 tanks, 260 armoured vehicles, over 210 cannons and mortars in the area of responsibility of Khortytsia operational-strategic group.

Kharkiv oblast

According to Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, the enemy attacked Shevchenkivskyi district 2 times at around 10:40 pm. Preliminarily, it was S-300. The blast wave damaged windows in a residential building. There were no casualties. 

More than 15 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were under enemy artillery and mortar attacks,bincluding: Alisivka, Lyptsi, Lukiantsi of Kharkiv region, Starytsia, Zybyne of Chuhuiv region, Odradne, Dvorichna, Synkivka, Ivanivka, Berestove of Kupiansk region. 

The enemy attacked from the air at Morokhovets of Kharkiv region, Petropavlivka, Kucherivka, Podoly, Berestove, Kolodiazne of Kupiansk region. 

The invaders targeted Podoly village, Kupiansk region, at around 10 am. A private house was damaged.

The enemy shelling took place near the village of Zolochiv of Bohodukhiv region and Lyptsi of Kharkiv region at around 11 am. There were no casualties. 

Around 4 pm, between Hlyboke and Morokhovets villages of Kharkiv region, the invaders struck with KAB-guided bombs. There were no casualties. 

At about 8 pm, there was an enemy shelling of Lyptsi village. A private house was damaged. There were no casualties. 

The Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 3 enemy attacks near Synkivka and Petropavlivka of Kupiansk region.

Combined teams of explosive experts cleared 8.9 hectares of mines in Kharkiv oblast, destroying 333 explosive ordnance. Mine clearance is ongoing.

Among the 230 defenders of Ukraine, who were liberated from russian captivity yesterday, there are 15 residents of Kharkiv oblast, including 14 military personnel. 6 residents from Bohodukhiv region, 2 from Izium region, 1 from Derhachi, 1 from Chuhuiv, 2 from Kharkiv, 1 from Kupiansk and 1 from Pervomaisk returned home. A 21-year-old Izium resident was also released from enemy captivity.

The number of people killed in the shelling of Kharkiv on 2 January increased to two: an injured 84-year-old woman died in hospital. Also today, a 23-year-old girl with a post-concussion syndrome injury was treated by doctors. Based on the information provided by Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the total number of injured is 62.

Donetsk oblast

The press service of Donetsk police reported that russia attacked Kurakhove with five S-300 missiles at night. At least 4 apartment buildings, a kindergarten, a school, a cafe, a health centre and administrative buildings were damaged. Preliminary reports indicate that no residents were injured.

Occupation forces shelled 11 settlements: Avdiivka, Hirnyk, Krasnohorivka, Kurakhove, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, Nelipivka cities, Vovchenka, Zoria, Sieverne and Tonenke villages. 24 civilian objects were damaged: 16 residential buildings, an outbuilding, 5 cars, a gas pipeline and a power line.

Avdiivka suffered 15 attacks, including 12 air strikes. A 51-year-old man was killed and his 50-year-old wife critically injured. A private house and an apartment building were destroyed.

Also russians shelled Hirnyk with artillery. A 16-year-old boy was injured, 5 houses, cars and power grids damaged. Another civilian was injured in Toretsk.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, during the day, the invaders attacked Nevske and Bilohorivka with artillery and mortar launchers. They launched airstrikes on Stelmakhivka, Novoiehorivka, and Serebrianka forestry.

Yesterday, aid from the Red Cross Society was brought to Nevske. The villagers were given blankets and sets of dishes.

The security situation does not always allow for quick inspection all the aftermath of the enemy shelling of the liberated villages. Therefore, some destruction is found in a day or two, when russian attacks become less intense or air raids stop. So, in Nevske, two more private houses were destroyed. This is the seventh and eighth house to be completely destroyed after the massive air attack last week. 

Back in late 2022 and throughout 2023, the so-called “lpr” arranged forced medical examinations of children and adolescents in the northern regions of russia to justify the deportation and rehabilitation of children and adolescents. It was carried out by medical workers brought from russia so that locals could not interfere with the procedure. Out of the 136,915 children examined, 68.8% were allegedly diagnosed with some kind of pathology. These diagnoses provide grounds for taking the younger generation to russia for treatment. 

Russians have recognised the route moscow – lpr as an international one. In russia, most documents issued by the authorities of lpr are not recognised, even Luhansk residents with russian passports are not taken seriously because they have a certain mark. There is a negative attitude towards registration in the occupied region.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Kyiv RMA, the death toll from the russian missile strike on Kyiv on December 29, 2023, has risen to 32. Another 30 people were injured in the shelling. 

According to the State Emergency Service, emergency and rescue operations in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv have been completed following a massive air attack by russian troops on December 29. In the course of the work, 4,70 cubic metres of destroyed building structures were moved and removed.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the Kyiv RMA, reported that work continues in the oblast to restore damaged buildings after the russian missile attack on January 2. The regional and local budgets are being used for the reconstruction, and international funds and organisations are also helping. The broken windows in the damaged high-rise buildings have been covered with plywood and plastic sheeting by 80-90%. Specialists from the GEM International Foundation are taking measurements for the installation of windows. Heat, electricity and water supply have been restored. Law enforcement officers are on duty near the damaged buildings 24/7.

In the capital, Kyivteploenergo specialists have restored heat supply to 67 buildings that were left without heat as a result of rocket attacks on January 2. Currently, one building in the hardest-hit Solomianskyi district remains partially without heating.

The consequences of a massive russian attack in the courtyard of a multi-storey building in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district are being dealt with. There is a shell crater, damaged cars, and piles of garbage and broken glass that resulted from the destruction of the building. Local residents, volunteers and utilities are clearing the yard.

According to the Kyiv city council, a list of shelters accessible to visually impaired people has been published on the Official Kyiv City Portal. This format will allow people with complete vision loss to find the nearest shelter using special apps.

In Irpin, a 15-apartment residential building is being repaired at the expense of The Fund for Elimination of the Consequences of Armed Aggression. Currently, the restoration work is at its final stage. The building was heavily damaged in the spring of 2022 during the hostilities. The walls and facade were damaged, windows and doors were smashed, and the roof was destroyed.

Zhytomyr oblast

Vitalii Bunechko, Head of Zhytomyr RMA, a special anti-aircraft machine gun unit and additional mobile firing groups have been set up in Zhytomyr oblast. In total, more than 100 mobile firing groups protect the oblast’s airspace. More than UAH 160 million was allocated by the military administration and communities to create and equip them. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, russian troops have carried out 123 air strikes in Zhytomyr oblast.

As part of the Restoring Access to Healthcare Services in Communities in Zhytomyr Oblast project, mobile teams will work in three communities. They will provide primary medical and psychological care. The project is being implemented by In Touch Ukraine Foundation. Mobile medical teams will travel to the settlements of Narodychi, Slovechne and Olevsk communities.

Two kamikaze drones were purchased for the Armed Forces of Ukraine by representatives of the Union of Participants in Combat Operations in Afghanistan from Olevsk. The devices will soon be sent to the frontline. 

Sumy oblast

The Sumy RMA reported that at night and in the morning of January 4, russians fired 6 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 18 explosions. The Krasnopillia and Druzhbivka communities came under fire. 

One person was wounded in Sumy oblast over the last day. Two households, an apartment building, three cars, a shop, a non-residential three-storey building and a pharmacy were damaged.

According to the Ministry of Energy, 3,800 consumers in 58 settlements in Sumy oblast remain without electricity. Most of them are affected by the hostilities.

Chernihiv oblast

It is reported that russians shelled 5 villages in Novhorod-Siverskyi and Semenivka communities. There were 22 explosions.

Dmytro Kozlov, deputy director of the social protection department of the Chernihiv RMA, reported that as of January 4, 2024, 69,431 IDPs were registered in Chernihiv oblast.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council reported that the enemy attacked Nikopol at night. Rescuers extinguished the fire that broke out in a garage. Four private houses, three outbuildings, gas pipelines and a power line were damaged. Almost 1.5 thousand families were left without electricity.

14 attacks in one day. In the afternoon the enemy again shelled Nikopol region. They used 8 kamikaze drones and fired 6 times from artillery. They hit Nikopol itself, Pokrovsk, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities. Two men aged 56 and 67 were injured in Nikopol. They were taken to the hospital where they are receiving all necessary medical care.

A private enterprise, 13 residential buildings, an outbuilding, 2 cars, garages, power lines and gas pipelines were damaged. In the settlements of Pokrovsk community, an enterprise, 5 private houses, 2 outbuildings, a garage, a car and power lines were damaged as a result of russian attacks.

Vinnytsia oblast

The Vinnytsia City Council together with the community sent another aid to the frontline. 5 000 chemical heating pads and one thermal imager were sent to the defenders. The entire cargo was made in Ukraine.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of RMA reported that as a result of a missile attack on Kropyvnytskyi 8 people were injured and one was killed at an industrial facility. The missile fragments damaged a power line and buildings which belong to local power companies.

Poltava oblast

Philip Pronin, Head of the Poltava RMA announced that 3 soldiers from Poltava region have returned from captivity. Senior soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Maksym Hlushko from Kremenchuk region was taken prisoner in Mariupol. Junior sergeant, commander of the National Guard Ivan Sribnyi from Semenivka community was captured in Zaporizhzhia. Artem Strebko, a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Novi Sanzhary community, was taken prisoner in Donetsk region. They are currently undergoing rehabilitation and keeping in touch with their families.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA reported that soldiers released from captivity as part of another exchange were met in Cherkasy region. These are Lieutenant Volodymyr Polovynka, Junior Sergeant Vasyl Tupytskyi, Senior Soldier Dmytro Vorona and Soldier Oleksandr Shadyria. Two of them have been missing since 2022 and we had confirmation that the others were in captivity. The hardest part is over. Next up is comprehensive rehabilitation.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General, announced that the IAEA experts were denied access to some halls of Zaporizhzhya NPP power units. According to him, this is the first time that the agency has been denied access to the reactor halls of power units that are in a state of “cold shutdown”. 

Petro Kotin, President of Energoatom, said that denying IAEA experts access to ZNPP reactor halls is an attempt by the occupiers to conceal the true situation at the plant. 

On January 3, the russian military struck 23 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast with 159 missiles. 33 UAV attacks on Gulyaypole, Novoandriivka, Novodarivka, Charivne, Chervone, Krasne, Malynivka, Mala Tokmachka, Shcherbaky, Robotyno, Poltavka, Pyatikhatki and Lobkove. 111 artillery attacks took place in Zaliznychne, Novodanilivka, Levadne, Huliaipilske, Preobrazhenka, Poltavka, Robotyne, Novoandriivka, Orikhove, Mali Shcherbaky and other frontline settlements on the line of fire.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the morning of  January 4, russian troops attacked Ochakiv in the Mykolaiv oblast. Multi-storey buildings, private houses and vehicles were damaged. In addition, power grids and gas infrastructure were damaged. The shelling caused a gas leak in one of the buildings.

Ivan Kukhta, Head of the Snihurivka City Military Administration, reported on Thursday, January 4, that as a result of the shelling that Snihurivka suffered yesterday, 40 houses were damaged and four were destroyed. A large part of the neighbourhood is without electricity. 

On  January 4, the Mykolaiv Red Cross Society received mobile water treatment stations from the Danish organisation. The system units are capable of purifying water from reservoirs and wells using three mechanical filters, a fine filter and bio-treatment. In total, the Red Cross has six small mobile stations and two large ones, one of which has already been installed in one of Mykolaiv’s regions.

Anton Belan is a volunteer who cooks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine at his own cafe in Mykolaiv. His colleagues and his daughter, who adds her own drawings with wishes for the defenders, also help him prepare the food and packages.

Odesa oblast

Kirill Budanov, Head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, announced that as a result of the prisoner exchange, the defenders of Zmeinyi Island, who were captured by the invaders in the early days of the war, were released. A female military medic from Azovstal, border guards, police officers and civilians also returned home. The exchange had been prepared for a long time with the assistance of the United Arab Emirates. 

Rail.insider writes, citing Valery Tkachev, Director of the commercial work department at UZ, that the average daily volume of grain unloading in the ports of Greater Odesa is 1,053 wagons, which is 55 units more than a week ago. In total, 14,333 railcars are currently moving in the direction of all Ukrainian ports. More than 2,200 units are unloaded daily. With grain, 7398 wagons are heading to the ports of Greater Odesa, and 707 units are heading to the Danube ports.

The Safianivska territorial community of Odesa oblast has purchased and handed over 37 FPV drones to the military. The community also donated radios, tyres and food to the military.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration said that as a result of the strike of the russian army on Stanislav, one person was killed, two were injured. Private houses and cars were damaged. Electricity was cut off in the settlement. 

Novotyanka in the Kherson oblast were the russian military attacked  region. A woman was injurded and hospitalised.

At night on January 4, the russian army shelled Novovorontsovka in the Kherson oblast with artillery. A woman was injured.

Armed Forces of South said that the russian army attacked settlements in the Kherson  oblast with nine FPV drones and Lancet attack UAVs. They dropped 12 fragmentation munitions on Kizomys, Yantarne, Novoberislav, Beryslav, Zmiivka, and Havrylivka. A civilian car was damaged in one of the drone attacks in Beryslav. 

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that two people died in Kherson oblast as a result of russian shelling over the past day.  97 times the russian army shelled the territory of the oblast. An educational institution in Kherson oblast and the territory of an enterprise in Beryslav were hit. 

On January 3,  the Armed Forces of South eliminated 54 russian servicemen. They destroyed a Strela-10 anti-aircraft missile system, a Pion self-propelled artillery system, three cannons, a Kub attack UAV, an APC-80, seven vehicles and two russian army observation posts.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Four military personnel from Volyn returned yesterday from captivity. Dmytro Osovyi from the village of Smoligiv, Lutsk district. He was a member of the ATO, and from the first days he went to war. He was captured in Luhansk oblast. Ilia Muzyka is a border guard dog handler from Novovolynsk. Captured on April 12, 2022 from the Ilyich factory (Mariupol). Two men from Volun who were considered missing were also released – Serhii Zinchuk from Kolkiv community and Ruslan Feleschuk from Kolodyazhnen community. Both disappeared in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Bedevlya village council awarded the III degree Order “For Courage” (posthumously) to Serhii Demchenko, the father of a fallen soldier from the village of Bedevlya.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

After a year and a half of captivity, Halyna Fedyshyn from Prykarpattia returned home/ She is the last female marine. The 28-year-old military medic, a native of Rozhnytiv region, has been saving the lives of soldiers on the front lines since 2016. And in May 2022, she was captured by the russians.

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council presented the III degree “For Honor and Victory” award to military Roman Myhal. He is the deputy commander of one of the units of the Armed Forces, who has been working on the difficult areas of Ukraine’s defense since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Lviv oblast

Among the 230 Ukrainians who were released from captivity yesterday, there are 6 residents of Lviv oblast. 35-year-old Ostap Reshitnyk from Lviv. There was no contact with him since April 2022. Yurii Hrynash, 24-year-old resident of Drohobych. The man had been in captivity since May 2022. Ruslan Shakalo, 49-year-old resident of the village of Solonsko, Medenytsia community. He has been in captivity since the end of April 2022. Eduard Sova from the community. He was also held captive for almost two years. Vasyl Danylovych from Skolivska community. Serhii Zonin, soldier, returns to Mostyshchyna. The man had been in captivity since May 2022.

Irish benefactors will help modernize a social institution in Lviv oblast, where children with disabilities live. Rivne oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Major General Anatolyi Barhylevych, Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Participants discussed strategic priorities, primary tasks regarding fortification and defense.

Yaroslav Hodunko, resident of Rivne oblast, returned from captivity. And soon, on January 25, he will be able to celebrate his 23rd birthday with his family. Yaroslav is a sergeant, border service inspector. He was captured in Mariupol.

A multidisciplinary WHO rehabilitation team from different countries of the world works in Rivne Regional War Veterans Hospital. In general, these are 10 specialists-practitioners from different countries of the world, namely, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Italy and India.

The 14th separate mechanized brigade named after Prince Roman the Great and the 457th separate infantry battalion received new DJI Mavic 3 Thermal drones thanks to the budget funds of Rivne community.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that among those released from russian captivity are four residents of Ternopil oblast.

The mobile dental service returned from another trip to the front, where doctors provided dental care to our defenders at the combat positions of Donetsk oblast. During this time, medics of the city dental polyclinic provided dental care to 110 servicemen. And in general, since the beginning of the work of such an office, 2 263 defenders on the front lines have been treated.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during an air alert, in the area of ​​the air defense forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 2 unmanned aerial vehicles of the “Shahed” type were neutralized. There were no injuries and no damage to the infrastructure. There was no information about the destruction of private property.

Chernivtsi oblast

Among those released from russian captivity is Ivan Horlovskyi , a 33-year-old military man from Bukovyna. He comes from the village of Zamostya, Vashkivetsk community.

Within the framework of the regional social support program for the participants of the ATO/OJF, Defenders and their families for the year 2023 until the Christmas holidays, minor and minor children of the dead/deceased participants of the anti-terrorist operation/operation of the joint forces, persons who took part in the activities necessary to ensure the defense of Ukraine, protect the safety of the population and the interests of the state in connection with military aggression, volunteers were paid material aid in the total amount of UAH 522K.

Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain will purchase up to a thousand Patriot missiles to strengthen the alliance’s air defenses after russia’s massive missile attacks against Ukraine. NATO claims that the contract was signed with COMLOG, a joint venture between the American company Raytheon and the German MBDA. And the large volume of the order will support the creation of a plant for the production of Patriot missiles in Germany.

The EU imposed sanctions on the largest Russian diamond mining company “Alrosa” and its general director Marynichev. The company “Alrosa” provides over 90% of all russian diamond mining. As stated in the notification, the sanctions were introduced because the activities of the company and its manager undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

The White House confirmed the absence of abuse of military aid in Ukraine. “We have not seen any signs that this (accountability in Ukraine – ed.) does not exist, or that there has been large-scale corruption or abuse on the part of the Ukrainian army,” noted John Kirby, coordinator of the US National Security Council. Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, held a conversation with Radoslaw Sikorski, Polish Foreign Minister. Parties agreed to strengthen military support for Ukraine.

The IAEA reported that the russian federation banned the inspection of several reactor halls of the ZNPP. The agency stressed that IAEA experts “still cannot gain access to all parts of the plant, and for the past two weeks they have not been allowed to the reactor halls of power units #1, 2 and 6.” “This is the first time that IAEA experts have not been granted access to the reactor hall of the power unit, which was in a state of cold shutdown. It is there that the active zone of the reactor and the spent fuel are located. The team will continue to request this access,” the IAEA added.
