It has been the 678 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy repeated a large-scale attack using various types of air attack means, as happened a few days ago on December 29, 2023. The russian federation continues to attack civilian, critical infrastructure and industrial, historical and cultural heritage sites, posing as strikes on military targets. The enemy hammered Kyiv with missiles in a large-scale attack. Kharkiv was also hit hard.

According to the detailed information, the enemy used 135 means of air attack: missiles of various types and attack UAVs. Anti-aircraft defense destroyed 107 aerial targets: 35 out of 35 Shahed-136/131 type attack UAVs, 10 out of 10 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, 59 out of 70 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles, 3 out of 3 Kalibr cruise missiles.

56 combat clashes took place. The enemy carried out 66 airstrikes, including by “Shahed-136/131” type drones, launched 2 attacks from rocket salvo systems on the positions of our troops and populated areas. As a result of the russian terrorist attacks, over 100 civilians, including children, have been killed and injured. Over 100 private residential and apartment buildings, other civilian and industrial infrastructure in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions were destroyed and damaged.

The operational situation in the east and south of Ukraine remains complicated.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, the operational situation has not changed significantly. There were no signs of the formation of offensive groups. Certain units of the Armed Forces of Belarus perform tasks in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts sabotage and intelligence activities, carries out shelling of populated areas from the territory of the russian federation, increases the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border of Ukraine. Over 20 settlements, including Klius, Chernihiv oblast, were hit with enemy artillery and mortar; Kostiantynivka, Volodymyrivka, Kiyanytsia, Stepok, Novodmytrivka, Sumy oblast, Okhrimivka, Bolohivka, Dvorichanske, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders repelled 5 attacks near Synkivka and east of Petropavlivka, Kharkiv oblast, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to break through the defenses of our troops. About 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, specifically Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestovka, Kharkiv oblast.

The occupiers did not conduct offensive (assault) actions towards Lyman. The enemy carried out airstrikes in the areas of Bilohorivka and Serebriansk Forestry of Luhansk oblast. They shelled over 10 settlements with artillery and mortar, including Nevske in Luhansk oblast and Torske, Serebrianka, Spirne, Rozdolivka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the Armed Forces repulsed 5 attacks near Bohdanivka, Klischiivka, and Andriivka, Donetsk oblast, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to improve the tactical position. More than 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, in particular, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Kalynivka, Klishchiivka, Andriivka, Stupochki, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka, our defenders repelled 4 enemy attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Berdychiv, Avdiivka and another 14 attacks in Pervomaiskyi and Nevelsky districts of Donetsk oblast, where the enemy, with the support of aviation, unsuccessfully tried to improve the tactical position. About 10 settlements, including Keramik, Stepove, Avdiivka, Tonenke, Pervomaiske, and Nevelske of the Donetsk region, were hit with artillery and mortar.

The enemy did not conduct offensive (assault) actions towards Mariinka. They carried out airstrikes towards Heorgiivka and Novomykhailivka districts of Donetsk oblast. Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, Kurakhove, Pobyeda, Elizavetivka, Katerynivka were shelled with artillery and mortar. 

The enemy did not conduct offensive (assault) actions towards Shakhtarsk. About 10 settlements, specifically Vuhledar, Prechistivka, Zolota Niva, Urozhaine, Donetsk oblast, were hit with artillery and mortar.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the Armed Forces repulsed an enemy attack near Robotine, Zaporizhzhia oblast, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to restore lost positions. Novodanilivka and Orikhove of Zaporizhzhia oblast were hit with airstrikes. More than 15 settlements, including Zaliznychne, Robotyne, Novoandriivka, Mali Scherbaki, and Kamianske, Zaporizhzhia oblast, were affected by artillery and mortar attacks.

Towards Kherson, the enemy carried out an air strike in the area of the Red Lighthouse. Beryslav, Tiahinka, Kherson and Bilozerka, Kherson oblast were hit with the enemy artillery fire.

The enemy does not leave his intention to push back   our units from the bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro. The occupiers carried out 8 unsuccessful assaults, but our units continue to hold their positions and inflict significant losses on the enemy.

The aviation of the Armed Forces struck 12 areas of the buildup of the enemy personnel.

Units of rocket forces and artillery hit 2 anti-aircraft missile systems, an artillery system and a warehouse of fuel and lubricants of the enemy.

The russians hammered Ukraine with 99 missiles of various types. Ukrainian air defense forces shot down 72 aerial targets: 10 out of 10 Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal” aeroballistic missiles; 59 out of 70 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles and 3 out of 3 Kalibr cruise missiles. The day before, they also brought down 35 Shahed drones produced in russia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba called on foreign countries to respond decisively to another russian terrorist attack. The russian army attacked civilian targets. He urged the world to speed up the delivery of additional air defense systems, combat drones of all types, long-range missiles with a range of 300+ kilometers to Ukraine, transfer frozen russian assets to Ukraine and stop contacts with russian diplomats.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

This morning there were at least three explosions in Shevchenkivskyi district. Experts found fragments of an Iskander-M missile. Apartment buildings, outbuildings, civilian infrastructure and cars were damaged and a crater formed in one of the yards on Bakulina Street.

53 people were injured, one of whom was killed and russian missile killed Victoriia Tymoshenko, an actress of Kharkiv Academic Drama Theatre, Honoured Artist of Ukraine. 

52 people were injured. Among the injured are six children aged 6 to 13. Doctors are providing the necessary medical assistance to all patients.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that 27 people are in hospitals as a result of russian attack on Kharkiv in the morning. According to him, there are six injured children in hospitals, four of whom are in light condition. Two adults are in extremely critical condition.

The press service of the city council noted that the number of damaged buildings as a result of the morning shelling of Kharkiv has increased to 55. According to the press service, more than 2,000 windows in apartments and 685 in public places were broken. Three roofs were also damaged. 

Liliia Zmii, Spokeswoman of Karazin University, reported that 550 windows were broken in the main building. The old windows with wooden frames on the chemical side of the building, closer to the State Industry building, suffered the most. 

According to Ihor Terekhov, Kharkiv Mayor, an explosion occurred on the main gas pipeline and has been contained. Heating networks were also damaged.

Heating has been switched on in three of the eight buildings. Three houses are still without electricity. Some have no gas supply. Work is ongoing to dismantle the emergency structures of the residential building. All damaged premises are guarded by law enforcers around the clock.

Between 29 December and 2 January, more than 130 residential buildings were damaged in Kharkiv.

Zhanna Suslo, Spokeswoman of Kharkiv Zoo, stated that the animals were not injured as a result of missile attacks on Shevchenkivskyi district in the morning but they suffered psychological stress. 

Donetsk oblast

Vitalii Barabash, Head of Avdiivka City Military Administration, reported that in the morning russian troops shelled a hospital. There were no casualties among the doctors. 

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that two people were killed in Chasiv Yar as a result of russian artillery shelling. The private sector was hit a6a 55-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man sustained injuries incompatible with life.

The press service of Donetsk police informed that White Angel unit evacuated 2 elderly couples and 2 men in critical condition from Avdiivka. Yesterday russian troops attacked civilians 26 times. The enemy used guided bombs, X-69 missiles, Grad multiple rocket launchers and artillery.

17 settlements were under attacks: Avdiivka, Kurakhove, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar cities, Hostre, Zhelanne, Ocheretyne, Pivdenne settlements, Berdychi, Halytsynivka, Dachenske, Klishchiivka, Krymske, Lysivka, Orlivka, Rai-Oleksandrivka and Sieverne villages.

20 civilian objects were damaged, including 17 residential buildings, an agricultural company, an outpatient clinic and a power line. 

Russians dropped five guided bombs on Avdiivka and then shelled the town with artillery. One person was killed, a private house and two apartment buildings destroyed.

In Ocheretyne, enemy shells destroyed two private houses and killed a woman. 

The invaders shelled Pivdenne with artillery, hitting the private sector and killing a civilian.

Three civilians were injured in Orlivka, Lysivka and Krymske.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the enemy wants to have an advantage in Serebrianka forest, so even without temporarily attacking, they are bombing there. Also russians actively used drones, firing 13 times at the positions of Ukrainian defenders. The enemy once again shelled Nevske and Bilohorivka with mortars and artillery.

During the election campaign, the so-called “luhansk people’s republic” switched on mobile internet, which had been absent for almost a year, except for a few weeks in April and May 2023.

However, there is neither internet nor communication in Sievierodonetsk, Lysychansk, Rubizhne, Svatove, Kreminna, Troitske and the surrounding area. Meanwhile, the relevant “ministry” has already reported the installation of two street payphones in Rubizhne. Now there are a total of 10 in several cities. They are designed to make calls within the same settlement to landline numbers, if they are still available or have been re-installed.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

In the morning, the russian army launched a massive missile attack on Kyiv. Operational services worked in 6 districts where 7 fires broke out: Obolon, Pecherskyi, Podil, Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Desnianskyi districts.

A fire broke out in a multi-storey residential building in Solomianskyi district. Rescuers saved 57 people, 17 of whom were unblocked and 134 evacuated. Currently, 27 people were injured and 1 elderly woman died in an ambulance. The fire has been extinguished.

Fires broke out in warehouses in the Podil district. The fires are currently being extinguished. At one location, two car dealerships caught fire – the fire was extinguished over a total area of 300 square metres. 29 cars were completely burnt down and 5 cars were damaged. In addition, a gas pipeline valve and a water pipe were damaged. Relevant services are working at the scene. As of 17:00, fires are being extinguished at two locations in this district of Kyiv.

In Sviatoshynskyi district, enemy debris caught fire in a non-residential building on the area of 5 square metres. The fire was extinguished.

A fire broke out in a warehouse in Obolon district on the area of 2000 sq. m. The fire was extinguished.

Pecherskyi district had minor fires in two under-construction buildings. The fires were extinguished.

In the Desnianskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, debris caught fire in open areas. The fires were extinguished.

As of 16:10, 2 people were killed. As a result of the russian shelling of Kyiv, Liudmyla Shevtsova, a professor of the Department of Ecology at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, was killed.

Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, 49 people were injured, 43 were hospitalised. Most of them sustained mine-blast injuries.

A lioness from the Wildlife Rescue Centre was injured in the shelling of Kyiv. One of the downed russian missiles fell about 300 metres from the animal’s cage, and the blast wave caused her to suffer a serious concussion and completely lose her coordination. She is already receiving the necessary treatment.

Help centres for victims of the shelling have been set up in schools in the Solomianskyi district. There is an opportunity to write applications for compensation, as well as to warm up, drink tea and charge phones. Hot lunches are being organised with the support of World Central Kitchen. Psychologists from the State Emergency Service, Kyiv police and specialised charities also work in schools.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine press service, the Security Service blocked two online cameras that broadcast air defence operations and locations of Kyiv’s critical infrastructure. The cameras were hacked by russian special services. One was on the balcony of an apartment building and was used to monitor the surrounding area. The russian special services hacked it, changed the angle of view and connected it to YouTube.

As of 16:00, power supply was fully restored in the capital. About 260,000 households that were left without power supply due to the morning shelling have been supplied with electricity.

Consequences of the massive shelling of settlements in Kyiv oblast by russian terrorists: 16 detached houses, 11 apartment buildings and 75 vehicles were damaged. 2 schools, the premises of the regional rehabilitation centre and a number of businesses were also damaged. In addition, a fire broke out in an unfinished church and several warehouses were destroyed.

Boryspil, Bucha and Fastiv districts were affected. 

A fire in a residential building in Fastiv district was extinguished. Two people died. 

In Vyshneve, 5 apartment buildings and more than 40 cars were damaged. 7 people were injured.

A mobile heating station equipped with all the necessary facilities has been deployed in Vyshneve. People can keep warm, drink hot tea and contact their families and friends. Psychologists from the State Emergency Service are also working at the site. In one of the apartments, there was a lonely elderly woman who felt unwell. Rescuers transported her to an ambulance.

Zhytomyr oblast

As of the morning of January 2, 2 air alerts were declared in the Zhytomyr oblast for a total duration of 5 hours and 30 minutes. In 2023, air alerts were declared in the Zhytomyr oblast about 278 times for a total duration of more than 360 hours, which is about 15 days.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that a 110 kV overhead line was disconnected in Zhytomyr oblast as a result of morning shelling. More than 200 customers were cut off. All of them have electricity now. 

The Security Service of Ukraine reported that another member of the donetsk people’s republic terrorist organisation was sentenced to imprisonment. He still continues to fight against the Ukrainian Defence Forces. The trial was held in a special court proceeding in absentia (in the absence of the accused).

Sumy oblast

Today, russians shelled Yunakivka community with Grad rockets. It is reported about 5 damaged yards of local residents and a damaged car.

According to the Sumy RMA, at night and in the morning, the russians fired 7 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 51 explosions. Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Khotin, Esman communities were shelled. Over the past day, russian troops fired on the territory of the oblast. There were 136 attacks.

As a result of the shelling, two civilians died and one was injured. Three private houses, a two-storey apartment building, an outbuilding and a garage were damaged.

The Ministry of Energy reported that 58 settlements in Sumy oblast are without electricity due to the hostilities. As a result of yesterday’s shelling, a gas pipeline was damaged and one of the consumers had to cut off gas supply.

As of today, another 2,696 consumers in 58 settlements of Sumy oblast remain without electricity as the energy infrastructure is damaged by constant shelling. Power engineers are unable to restore its normal operation due to the threat to the lives of their specialists, as the invaders open fire on repair crews.

According to State Emergency Service of Ukraine, over the past day, pyrotechnics destroyed two mortar shells in Sumy and Okhtyrka districts. 

According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, on January 1, border guards spotted two Shahed\Geran UAVs. The defenders opened fire on the drones, both were shot down.

Oleksandr Kalmykov, a volunteer from Sumy, has been on a hunger strike for a day at the Krakovets checkpoint on the Polish-Ukrainian border against the obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. So far, he has not been able to register in the automated humanitarian aid registration system. The volunteer notes that the mandatory electronic registration has only worsened the importation of humanitarian aid.

Chernihiv oblast

Over the past day, the russian army shelled the territory of Chernihiv oblast 5 times. There were 10 explosions. The enemy fired at Chernihiv and Novhorod-Siverskyi districts with mortars and artillery, and dropped explosives from drones. The enemy fired towards the village of Hasychivka in Horodnia community, the villages of Leonivka, Arkhipivka and Karpovychi in Semenivka community. There were no casualties among the local population or damage to civilian infrastructure.

Viacheslav Chaus, head of the RMA, reported that in 2023, 24 civilians died as a result of russian shelling in Chernihiv oblast, including 2 children. In particular, 17 civilians (including 1 child) died in the border area.

In 2023, there were 11 incursions of hostile subversive reconnaissance groups into the territory of Chernihiv oblast. These hostile attacks resulted in the deaths of Ukrainian defenders. However, there were also unsuccessful attacks by the invaders.

As a result of hostilities, 7 10 kV power lines were de-energised (6 of them partially). 42 transformer substations were disconnected. 15 settlements are without power supply in full and 4 settlements in part, with 910 customers affected. 

According to the Service for Infrastructure Restoration and Development in Chernihiv Oblast, an overpass near Nizhyn, destroyed during the russian invasion. This is the sixth bridge restored in the oblast. The length of the artificial structure across the railway tracks is 60 metres, and the road has two lanes.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

6 Shaheds were destroyed over the region at night. Drones were shot down in Dnipro, Synelnykove, Nikopol and Novomoskovsk regions of the oblast. A power line was damaged in Kryvyi Rih district. About 320 homes were left without electricity. At night the enemy attacked Nikopol with artillery. There were no casualties or damage.

The occupiers attacked Nikopol 12 times. Six artillery attacks and the same number of kamikaze drones. There are two casualties in Nikopol. These are men aged 50 and 59. They received the necessary medical care. One was hospitalized in a moderate condition. The other will be treated on an outpatient basis. A trade pavilion, a kindergarten, a private enterprise, an amusement park, high-rise buildings, about two dozen private houses, 5 outbuildings were damaged, 2 more were completely destroyed, a car, power lines and gas pipelines were hit. Chervono Hryhorove, Pokrovsk and Marhanets communities were hit. Infrastructure facilities were damaged.

According to the RMA in Dnipro new double-glazed windows were brought to the damaged high-rise buildings. By the end of the week, it is planned to replace more than 200 windows in the entrances and apartments. Almost 1.5 thousand windows were smashed in the city after an enemy attack on December 29, 2023. They were temporarily covered with film and OSB sheets.

Vinnytsia oblast

Vinnytsia sent 15 thermal imagers, 14 Bander Power and two unmanned aerial systems to the Ukrainian military. In addition, the executive committee of the city council announced six tenders for the purchase of equipment needed by Ukrainian soldiers. It is planned to purchase 50 quadcopters, 200 thermal imagers and 40 searchlights to detect drones for almost UAH 140 million.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA reported that Air Defense System was activated in Kropyvnytskyi region. Missile fragments fell into the yard of a private house. According to the military, the crater is four meters wide and two and a half meters deep. The walls of a neighboring house were damaged by the debris.

Poltava oblast

Philip Pronin, Head of Poltava RMA announced that they inspected 10 points of Invincibility in Poltava community. The centers operate in the ready to open mode. In case of emergency, they are obliged to open in half an hour. We found some shortcomings in the arrangement of the centers. The remarks concern accessibility standards, lack of signage and problems with the Internet. All the shortcomings have to be eliminated. Similar inspections are planned to be conducted in all districts of Poltava region.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of RMA announced that in the region 7 Shaheds were shot down during the alerts. Air Defense Forces also shot down 2 missiles. There were no casualties or damage. Investigative teams are working.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yuriy Malashko, the head of the Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that at approximately 9:30, the russian military targeted a residential building, resulting in one person being injured and significant damage to the entrance of a residential building.

On January 1, 153 strikes were carried out by the russian military on cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. They used 27 drones to attack Hulyaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Malynivka, Poltavka, Novodarivka, and Bilohirya. Furthermore, artillery fire was directed 125 times towards Orihove, Zaliznychne, Novodanylivka, Shcherbakiv, Charivne, Levadne, Preobrazhenka, Stepnohirsk, Piatykhatky, Plavni, and Lobkove.

Mykolaiv oblast

The Mykolaiv RMA reported that three russian “Shahed-131/136” UAVs were downed in Mykolaiv oblast within a day. In Mykolaiv, during the air defense forces’ operations, debris from a downed “Shahed” sparked a fire in garages. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, covering an area of 70 square meters, with no casualties reported. Additionally, on January 1 at 10:45 and January 2 at 00:55, the russian military conducted artillery shelling in Ochakiv. At 10:47 on January 1, shelling targeted the water area near Ochakiv community. Moreover, on January 1 at 10:47, artillery strikes were recorded in Solonchaky village of Kutsurub community. No casualties were reported in any of these attacks.

The Southern Defense Forces updated that on January 2, soldiers from the Kherson Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade, part of the Southern Air Command, destroyed two “Kalibr” missiles in Mykolaiv oblast.

Regarding 15-year-old Sasha Zgurskyy from Novogrigorivka village in Mykolaiv oblast, whose home was destroyed by russian forces in the spring of 2022, a meeting with “Imagine Dragons” cinematographer Ty Arnold significantly impacted his life and that of his family. Sasha starred in “Imagine Dragons” music video for “Crushed”, which gained global attention. A fundraising platform, United24, allocated funds for the reconstruction of Sasha’s home.

Odesa oblast

The Odesa City Council on January 2 reported that 13 individuals wounded during the missile attack on December 29 and the drone strike on New Year’s Eve are currently receiving medical care. Among them, three are in critical condition, while the rest are in a moderate state. Two of those in critical condition were injured during the New Year’s attack. Specifically, a 32-year-old woman remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit, having suffered burns covering 30% of her body. 

Natalia Humeniuk, Head of the Joint Coordination Press Center for the Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine, revealed that approximately 50 mines have washed ashore along the Black Sea’s coastline over the past year. She highlighted russia’s deliberate act of placing explosive devices in the sea, aiming to disrupt the functioning of the humanitarian corridor. Humeniuk emphasized that incidents like the detonation of ships due to these mines, witnessed at the end of December, serve as a strong signal to the global community about Ukraine’s urgent need for demining tools.

Kherson oblast

The Kherson RMA reported that Bilozerka in Kherson oblast was targeted by the russian military, resulting in a woman being injured and causing in the settlement being a power outage.

As well, russian military shelled an industrial enterprise in Kherson, resulting in a fire at the site.

russian military dropped four guided aerial bombs on settlements in Beryslav district. Drones targeted Beryslav, aiming at one of the administrative buildings. There were no reported casualties.

Local residents in Kherson began clearing the aftermath of russian shelling, which caused damage to high-rise buildings, including broken windows and doors, and damaged building facades, and several cars.

The Southern Defense Forces reported that Defense Forces took action by destroying a russian field supply point, 20 cannons, two “Lancet” offensive drones, and a “Merlin” reconnaissance drone. Additionally, they eliminated 17 russian occupiers and two armored vehicles.

Olexander Prokudin, Head of the Kherson RMA reported that on January 1, the russian army conducted 87 shellings targeting Kherson oblast. The strikes affected a critical infrastructure object in Kherson, resulting in one death and four injuries.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The oblast continues to accept IDPs. In 2023, 3 326 IDPs came to Volyn. In total, 79 043 people have arrived in the region since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine. 39 of them were in the last week of last year.

Therefore, as of January 1, 2024, the following were placed: 19 152 people in Volodymyr region; 6 325 people in Kamin-Kashir region; 21 301 people in Kovel region; 32 265 displaced people in Lutsk region. 47 539 people have the status of IDPs. This amounts to 34 270 families, in which 13 365 are children. Among the IDPs: 2 157 people with disabilities, 6 844 pensioners, 91 large families, 12 single-parent families.

In addition, 235 people who moved from Kherson oblast due to the explosion of Kakhovsk HPP arrived in Volyn.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine reported that Zakarpattia RMA provided the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees with a list of locations that need repair and could soon become comfortable homes for IDPs.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council allocated UAH 9 mln from the budget for prosthetics for military personnel, participants of the anti-terrorist operation/military forces, war invalids, relatives of deceased soldiers and orphans. Also, UAH 5 mln was allocated for diagnostics for soldiers, participants of anti-terrorist operation/military forces, war invalids, relatives of dead servicemen and orphans.

Lviv oblast

Lviv Defense Cluster (LDC) sent 100K bulletproof vests to the Defense Forces during the year. Another 550 evacuation kits (body armor + helmets) were sent to the Juvenile Prevention Department of the National Police of Ukraine, which have been used for a long time on the front line and near-front areas, helping to safely evacuate children. LDC also sent 4K bulletproof vests for medics in Kharkiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Kherson oblasts.

50 FPV kamikaze drones and 2 DJI Mavic 3 quadcopters for over UAH 1.5 mln were sent to the 3rd Luhansk border detachment named after the Hero of Ukraine, Colonel Yevhen Pikus thanks to the Kozytskyi CF. This was done within the framework of the Birds of Victory project.

The regional organization of the Physical Culture and Sports Society of Ukraine Dynamo donated the entire prize fund for the victory (UAH 42K) in the international water polo tournament, to the needs of the border guards.

The RMA reported that the Community in Action NGO sent thermal imagers and another batch of video recorders for border guards.

Rivne oblast

Communities of Rivne oblast continue to be actively involved in the creation of Councils on IDPs. To date, 38 such bodies have been created in the oblast, including the council under the RMA.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that families of defenders from Ternopil oblast received awards from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

In Khmelnytskyi, the training of high school students continues in the multimedia shooting range of our educational and training center. The simulator reproduces the combat conditions of working with real weapons. Trainers are instructors with combat experience. About 1,5K high school students are to undergo such training. These are not only boys, but also girls whose parents have expressed such a wish. In the spring, high school students will go to shooting ranges. In parallel, there are classes in tactical medicine. There will also be a training course on UAV management.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA reported that Bohdan Petrushko from the village of Hlivishche received the Golden Cross badge from Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for successful completion of tasks and high performance in combat training. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, announced that Ukraine received additional NASAMS air defense systems from Canada.

Espen Bart Eide, Head of the Foreign Ministry of Norway, stated that the country allowed the direct sale of weapons to Ukraine. The decision enters into force on January 1, 2024. This policy change means that Norwegian companies can apply to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an export license for direct sales of arms and defense products to Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, held the first international conversation of 2024 with Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister. They discussed the work on security guarantees, and agreed that the teams will activate a bilateral dialogue for a corresponding agreement in the near future.

Petteri Orpo, Finnish Prime Minister, promised to continue long-term support to Ukraine and to increase the production of ammunition. The head of the government noted that Finland is actively working in the EU to ensure that Europe “remains united together with Ukraine.”

Linas Linkevicius, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Lithuania reacted to the New Year’s speech of the russian president, stated: “putin said on the occasion of the New Year that Russia will not retreat anywhere. Indeed, there is crap ahead, crap in the past and underfoot, so there is no need to move anywhere”.

UNITED24 platform ambassadors Mark Hamill, Timothy Snyder, Catherine Vinnyk, Misha Collins, Liev Schreiber and others congratulated Ukraine on the holidays by performing the song Shchedryk in Ukrainian.
