IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reported that six of the seven pillars of nuclear safety have been violated at the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This refers to the seven key components of nuclear and physical protection. These include: physical integrity, equipment reliability, no pressure on personnel, reliable power supply, uninterrupted logistics, radiation monitoring, functioning communication channels. The station is supplied by only one external power line, which poses serious risks. All six reactors are in a cold shutdown state, and none of them can be safely restarted. The water level in the cooling pool has dropped to 13.4m, close to the critical threshold of 12m, below which the cooling systems fail. The IAEA stresses the need to build a pumping station to ensure the stable operation of the cooling systems. Ongoing hostilities near the plant are a cause for serious concern and increase the risks.
