War in Ukraine today: latest news, 30 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 858th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 30 June, the russian army tried to penetrate Ukrainian defences and dislodge Ukrainian units from the occupied lines. The number of combat clashes along the entire front line increased to 109. The most active invaders were towards Pokrovsk. At the same time, Ukrainian defenders were giving a worthy rebuff to the occupiers, destroying the enemy’s personnel and equipment. 

Towards Kharkiv, the aggressor tried to attack eight times. Fighting continues in the vicinity of Vovchansk. The enemy is actively using aviation from the territory of the russian federation, bombing Lyptsi, Tokarivka Druha, Vesele, Neskuchne, Derhachi, Slobozhanske and Kharkiv.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders repelled seven assaults by the occupying forces. Fighting continues near Synkivka and Stelmakhivka. 

Towards Lyman, the defense forces were holding back the enemy in the vicinity of Nevske and Torske. The total number of clashes reached 11.

Towards Toretsk, the number of assaults increased to six. Fighting continues near Pivdenne.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers do not reduce the pressure.  Since the beginning of the day, the enemy attacked the defensive lines of Ukrainian defenders 36 times.  Nine assault operations are underway, in particular, there are battles in the vicinity of Novooleksandrivka, Vozdvyzhenka, Yevhenivka and Novoselivka Persha.

Two enemy attempts to attack were added towards Kurakhove and Vremivka. 

In other areas, the situation has not changed significantly.


The Prosecutor General’s Office reports that since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 551 children have been killed and more than 1400 injured. Most children were affected in Donetsk, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. 

Dmytro Lubinets, Commissioner for Human Rights, reports that more than 14,000 people are illegally detained by russia. In the case of the return of civilians, there is not even a legal basis for that.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 168 invaders were injured or killed on 29 June towards Kharkiv. The russians tried to attack this axis 8 times over the day, and fighting continues near Vovchansk. The russian army is actively using aviation from its territory: in addition to Kharkiv and Derhachi, they bombed Lyptsi, Tokarivka Druha, Vesele, Neskuchne and Slobozhanske. Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders have repelled 7 attacks by the occupation forces since the beginning of the day. Fighting continues near Synkivka and Stelmakhivka.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that as a result of shelling by the KAB in Kharkiv, the Nova Poshta office in Slobidskyi district was on fire. 10 people were injured. Among them is an 8-month-old child, a woman, and the rest are men. A man, an employee of a post office, was killed. The car park was hit. Eight cars were destroyed, dozens were damaged. The debris is still being cleared. There could have been 9 people at the site of the hit, they are being searched for.

The State Emergency Service of Kharkiv oblast reported that a 71-year-old woman suffered a traumatic amputation of her right foot as a result of the explosion of a PFM-1 Butterfly anti-personnel mine in Yaremivka, Izium region, on 30 June.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv community, said that for two days, russia has been shelling Baranivka village by MRLs and artillery. As a result of the strikes in the morning, two houses and outbuildings were destroyed and power grids damaged.

Sappers of the State Emergency Service found a large number of anti-tank mines in Izium region. The SES added that TM-62PZ anti-tank mines were spread over a large area.

Viacheslav Zadorenko, Head of Derhachi CMA, stated that the russian federation hit the territory of a civilian enterprise. According to him, there was no information about casualties.

Yesterday at 9:22pm, there was an attack outside Kivsharivka village, Kupiansk region.

At 4:35pm, Synkivka forestry of Kupiansk village, Kupiansk region, was hit. Coniferous litter was burning.

At 4:03pm, a hit of a KAB near a house was recorded in Derhachi village of Derhachi community, Kharkiv region. The garage, outbuildings, windows and balconies of a 5-storey residential building were damaged. The second hit to the ground in the field. A woman was injured, she refused to be hospitalised.

Another hit was recorded on the territory of the enterprise. It damaged window glazing, a concrete fence, walls, ready-made playgrounds, power supply and household appliances.

At 4:03pm, the territory of a private household was shelled in Derhachi village of Derhachi community, Kharkiv region. An inspection was performed after the shelling. The shell hit the garden. The residential building at this address was partially destroyed, at least 10 private houses were damaged and two men injured.

At 3:47pm, Osynove village of Kupiansk community, Kupiansk region, was shelled, hitting the open territory.

At 1:08pm, Odnorobivka village of Zolochiv community, Bohodukhivregion, was hit. The shelling damaged the administrative building of the farm and the shop.

Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi was targeted by artillery at 11am. A private house was damaged and a 70-year-old woman injured.

On 29 June at 10am, there was an artillery shelling of Odnorobivka village of Bohodukhiv region. A private house was damaged.

Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian defenders successfully stopped 12 enemy attempts to improve their position near Vovchansk. Also russian terrorists suffered losses and retreated.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the total number of combat engagements increased to 13. The enemy tried to push the Ukrainian defence forces back from their positions near Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Stelmakhivka, Hrekivka, Nevske and Torske. 5 attacks have been repelled so far. Fighting continues. The situation is under control of Ukrainian defenders.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that over 340 russian troops were neutralised by the Ukrainian Defence Forces towards Pokrovsk yesterday.  This section of the frontline remains the hottest. Since the beginning of the day, russians have stormed the Ukrainian defence line 15 times, and the Defence Forces have repelled 10 attacks. Five more attacks are ongoing near Prohres, Novooleksandrivka, Vozdvyzhenka, Yevhenivka and Novoselivka Persha.

The number of russian attacks towards Pokrovsk has increased to 23 since the beginning of the day. The russian army is also active towards Toretsk and Kurakhove.

The occupation forces conducted a total of 20 assaults there.

Oleksandr Zhuravlov, Head of the CMA, reported that there are still 162 children in five settlements of Lyman community, where the forced evacuation of families with children was introduced on 6 June.

Over almost a month of evacuation, 188 children have been taken out of Lyman, Nove, Karpivka, Lypove and Stavky. All children and their families have been evacuated from Lypove and Nove.  

The evacuated residents of Toretsk community are being accommodated in a temporary centre in Dnipro. People with disabilities and the elderly are being cared for there. Evacuations from the community continue due to intensified russian shelling.

The regional police confirmed that one person was killed and two injured in a morning russian attack on Toretsk. The Russians dropped four KAB-250 bombs on the city.

The CMA informed that in the evening of 29 June, the russian army shelled Selydove. The invaders hit the mine’s production facilities and destroyed some of the buildings. The fire caused by the russian strike over an area of 2,200 sq m took 5 hours to extinguish.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 30 June is as follows:

Pokrovsk region. 1 person was killed and 3 injured, 4 houses were damaged in Kurakhivka; a person was injured and a house destroyed in Kurakhove. In Selydove, 3 administrative buildings and 6 industrial premises were damaged.

Kramatorsk region. In Lyman community, 3 people were killed and a house destroyed in Zarichne; 1 person was injured and 1 house damaged in Torske. In Kostiantynivka, 1 person was killed and 3 injured, 2 private houses were destroyed, 13 private houses, 12 apartment buildings, 4 non-residential buildings, 3 administrative buildings, a gym, a shop, 2 infrastructure facilities and 13 cars were damaged.

Bakhmut region. In Toretsk community, 2 people were killed and 6 injured, 24 houses and 2 administrative buildings were damaged. In Chasiv Yar community, 4 private houses and an apartment building were damaged. In Siversk community, 2 houses were destroyed and 2 damaged.

In total, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 32 times over the day. 313 people, including 24 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russians killed 9 civilians: 3 in Zarechnoye, 1 in Toretsk, Niu-York, Kurakhivka, Kostiantynivka, Pivnichne and Sloviansk. Another 16 people were injured in the oblast over the day.

It took 10 months for Artur Sadykov from Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk oblast, to create a diorama about the destroyed city of Donetsk oblast – “Congratulations, Bakhmut”. In his work, the artist used 3D printing models, plastic, cardboard, wood veneer, polymers, gypsum and other materials. The scale of the details is 1:35.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday was extremely difficult for both our defenders and the residents of the frontline Nevske, Stelmakhivka and Makiivka, who withstood 101 attacks: 33 artillery and 68 mortar attacks. Nevske was attacked by drones four times. Locals were forced to spend the whole day in shelters.

There were 13 combat engagements towards Kupiansk and Lyman. The enemy tried to push the Defence Forces back from their positions near Stelmakhivka, Hrekivka and Nevske, but failed.

The Defence Forces pushed back the enemy in Serebrianka forestry. The 12th Azov National Guard Brigade, the 95th Air Assault Brigade, the 3rd Pomsta (Revenge) Air Assault Brigade of the State Border Guard Service and other related units conducted a successful operation. 

Mostly antisocial individuals and the elderly remained in the occupied cities.

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, despite the lack of basic housing and communal services and the general impoverishment of residents, tariffs continue to be raised. On 1 July, the monthly payment for non-existent utilities will increase by an average of 10%. Thus, according to the approved plan, the increase in tariffs for the population from 1 July in the territory of the lpr will be: electricity – by 16.7%; heat supply services – by 8.1%; cold water supply – by 9.0%; sewage – by 6.0%; services in the field of solid waste management – by 4.7%. 

Artem Lysohor, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that occupied towns and villages are now also used to dispose of expired food products, as people are forced to buy the cheapest things due to the lack of work and means of subsistence.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Ministry of Veterans reports that the first stage of the National Military Memorial Cemetery burial complex construction project has passed the state examination. The project to honour and perpetuate the memory of fallen defenders will be implemented in Hatne territorial community near Kyiv.

A charity race in honour of Oleksii Chubashev ‘Recruit’, military journalist and member of the International Legion of Ukrainian Intelligence, who was killed in action in Sievierodonetsk in 2022, was held at VDNKh in Kyiv. Civilians and military personnel from 34 countries took part in the competition. 1,200 participants were present physically, and another 600 online. The charity race raised over UAH 1m, which would be used for the needs of the International Legion of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

Motor Transport of Kyiv City State Administration has repaired two more vehicles for servicemen. KCSA informed that the vehicles will be sent to the frontline in the near future. As part of the eZahystnik programme, the company repairs and restores military vehicles damaged in the fighting.

This year, Kyiv oblast plans to purchase 40 school buses in co-financing with communities. Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, announced that the oblast has received over UAH 91m in subventions. More than 33,000 students in Kyiv oblast need transportation. During the 2023/2024 school year, the fleet of school buses increased by 83 units.

The Ukrainian Women’s Guard invites people to participate in a warm and creative Women’s Circle, a safe cultural and informational space, to handle burnout in the war, recovery, motivation, psychological and emotional support. Meetings are scheduled for 4, 12, 18 and 26 July in Kyiv. On 7 and 21 July, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard announced that self-defence and crisis survival training for women will be held in Kyiv. Two groups of women are being formed to take the course. The classes will consist of lectures and practical exercises. The programme includes: the correct position choice when defending against an attack, self-defence with improvised means, exercises to overcome the psychological barrier before resisting, working with fear, and the specifics of self-defence in different conditions. 

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyroblenerho JSC reported that due to large-scale russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid in spring and early summer, the electricity shortage in Zhytomyr oblast constitutes 50 per cent of the demand. The situation is expected to worsen in the autumn and winter. Currently, the energy balance in the oblast is being maintained by additional power sources.

Children of internally displaced persons and military personnel from Zhytomyr oblast went to the Art-Maidan Artek Social and Cultural Fest for recreation. 26 children received vouchers to the state-owned enterprise Artek International Children’s Centre in Kyiv. Another 10 children went on holiday to Artek in Zakarpattia oblast.

Sumy oblast

According to the RMA report, at night and in the morning of 30 June, russians attacked the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast 7 times. There were 29 attacks, including mortar and artillery fire and FPV drone attacks. Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Shalyhyne communities were under enemy fire.

Over the past day, russians attacked Sumy oblast 14 times – there were 94 explosions. Seven border communities were shelled: Krasnopillia (2 FPV drone strikes, 22 artillery strikes); Esman (20 artillery strikes, 16 mortar strikes); Khotyn (launch of 5 NAR missiles from a helicopter); Bilopillia (15 artillery strikes and 4 mortar strikes); Velyka Pysarivka (5 mines were dropped); Myropillia (1 strike by an aircraft-type UAV and the dropping of an aerial explosive device); Seredyna-Buda (shelling with three FPV drones – 3 explosions).

The North Joint Task Force reported that as a result of russian shelling on 29 June, a civilian was injured in Esman village. Three private houses and a critical infrastructure facility were also damaged. An artillery strike damaged eight private houses in Sukhodil village of Esman community, and a household building in Seredyna-Buda.

In Vorhil, Sumy oblast, free relaxation therapy is offered to soldiers. Local businessman Maxim Koniukh has set up an api house in a forest clearing. In 2024, the entrepreneur created a business plan and won a grant competition, which he used to buy the houses and special protective clothing. 

Chernihiv oblast

SBGSU announced that over the past day, russian troops attacked the border of Chernihiv oblast with various types of weapons. There were 20 explosions. Three communities were under enemy fire: Semenivka – 11 strikes from cannon artillery, mortars and explosive munitions from UAVs; Snovsk – 8 strikes from cannon artillery; Novhorod-Siverskyi – 1 strike from an FPV drone.

Sosnytsia community reported that in Luhansk oblast, Yurii Pomaz, Director of Sosnytsia Local History Museum,  was killed in action near the village of Novovodiane on 24 June. He was 39 years old. Yuriiy was also a member of Sosnytsia Tourist initiative group. 

Five high school students, now graduates of School No. 1 in Chernihiv, have developed an invention that helps detect drones within a radius of five kilometres. Their drone detector will soon be sent to the front line for testing by the military. According to the developers, they created it on the basis of the Ukrainian drone detector Tsukorok, but the difference is that their invention has artificial intelligence.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipro Oblast Council, reported that the enemy attacked Nikopol and Myrove community with various types of drones. A private house and an outbuilding were damaged. In the morning, the occupiers attacked Pokrovsk community with a kamikaze drone and shelled Marhanets with artillery. A fire broke out in the latter. The shelling caused a field to catch fire.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region about a dozen times. They fired mostly from artillery and also launched kamikaze drones. Nikopol and the Pokrovsk community came under attack. The shelling caused several fires. A private house and an outbuilding were damaged. 

Serhii Lysak, Head of THE RMA, reported that a rescue and search operation is underway at the site of the June 28 rocket attack in Dnipro. They are looking for people whose fate is still unknown. The rescuers have already removed 480 tons of damaged structures and debris from the site.

Vinnytsia oblast

In the week from June 24 to June 30, 14 soldiers from Vinnytsia oblast were killed.

Cherkasy oblast

A charity race “Running for Mirosh” was held in Cherkasy in honor of the fallen soldier Konstantin Miroshnychenko. Entry fees for the race will be donated to the needs of the unit in which he served.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 29 June, the russian army struck 13 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhya oblast 381 times. It fired three missiles at Zaporizhzhia region and 216 artillery strikes on the territory of Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Preobrazhenka, Verkhnya Tersa, Novopavlivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Levadne, and Malynivka.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that in the evening of 29 June, russian troops launched several rocket attacks on the town of Vilniansk in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Critical infrastructure facilities, shops, residential buildings and cars were damaged. Seven people were killed, among them  are 3 children. 38 people were injured. 

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, said that on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the creation of the 123rd separate territorial defence brigade, a thousand FPV drones were presented. The FPV drones were donated for a total of almost UAH 17m. The funds were allocated from the regional budget. 

According to Mykolaivoblteploenergo during the war, the issue of providing Ukrainians with basic goods, including heat, is acute, so the specialists of Mykolaivoblteploenergo have worked out a clear algorithm of actions on how to restore heat supply to the city in case of a possible hit to the heat generation facility. The drills are needed to ensure that every employee knows the emergency procedure.

Odesa oblast

The South Air Command reported that in the morning on 29 June, the russian army attacked Odesa oblast with a ballistic missile, probably an Iskander-M from the occupied Crimea. 

The Health Department of Odesa RMA reported that at the Regional Clinical Hospital, Odesa doctors together with colleagues from the Mykola Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine performed a highly complex operation on a patient, repairing aortic detachment and placing two stents. The unique operation was performed on 28 June. 

Kherson oblast

Around noon on 30 June, russian troops attacked the Dniprovsky district of Kherson. A 53-year-old man was injured. He was taken to hospital. 

The Armed Forces of Southern Ukraine eliminated 86 occupiers and 45 units of their weapons and military equipment. Four field supply points, a field depot, two observation points and one UAV control point were also hit.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that on 29 June, russian troops shelled 24 settlements in Kherson oblast. One person was killed and five others injured. 11 private houses, two multi-storey buildings, a shop, a garage and cars were damaged. 

Kherson Regional Military Administration said that a social laundry has been opened in the village of Pryhiria of Kochubeiivka community in Kherson oblast. It is free of charge. The first priority is given to military families, families with disabilities, large families, the elderly and IDPs. The project was implemented with the support of the Uheim Foundation, the Crimean Front and KSRelief joint initiative. 

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that the community sent 11 RRA SA-E03 EDGECarbine-half tan airsoft assault rifles to the A0666 Military Unit.

Zakarpattia oblast

Almost UAH 72,000 were collected at the Uzhhorod Night Run and a concert organised in the regional centre of Zakarpattia for Constitution Day. The raised funds will be donated to purchase a T30 drone for the Aerial Reconnaissance Unit of the 63rd Brigade of the 105th Battalion, commanded by Vasyl Prodan from Uzhhorod.

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 30 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old and 50 bags with grocery sets. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (2,700 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help eV and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 2 Mavics and 20 FPV drones to the 453rd Separate Infantry Battalion and 20 FPV drones to the 102nd Brigade thanks to the budget funds.

Iryna Tsybukh ‘Cheka’, paramedic and public figure from Lviv, was posthumously awarded with the III degree For Courage Order. She was killed on 29 May in Kharkiv oblast. The Hero was buried on 3 June, 2024, on the Field of Mars of Lychakiv Cemetery.

Lviv oblast

Lviv City Council reported that during the  2023/2024 academic year, schools and kindergartens of the community held many promotions, fairs and other charitable initiatives, during which they raised almost UAH 52m.

Lviv City Council reported that this year, almost UAH 34m was spent to establish shelters in schools from the budget of the city, and almost UAH 9m in kindergartens. The total amount is UAH 42.5.

The pre-premiere screening of the 10 Years of War film took place in Lviv oblast. It was created by the Espresso TV channel with the support of Internews Network and the US Embassy in Ukraine. The tape was intended to show the history of the struggle of the Ukrainian people and defenders who defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

1,168 households in Rivne oblast now have solar panels. This allows their owners to obtain electricity for their needs, as well as sell it at a “green tariff”. This year, 37 families switched to using solar energy. The total power of all stations in the households of the oblast is over 31 megawatts.

Ternopil oblast

According to the Decrees of the President of Ukraine, 20 defenders from Ternopil oblast were posthumously awarded with the III degree Order of Courage for their personal courage and self-sacrifice in the defence of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Another Hero was posthumously awarded with the Defender of the Fatherland medal.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The Veteran Space works in Khmelnytskyi. Since the beginning of 2024, over 600 people have used its services. These are military personnel, their families, families of fallen Heroes, prisoners, etc. Psychologists, lawyers, rehabilitators, social workers consult here, and provide advice on employment and retraining.

The RMA reported that this week, the air alert signal sounded 6 times in the oblast.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Akhtem Seitablaev, famous Ukrainian actor and director, and Feliks Karaiev, volunteer and co-coordinator of the Crimean Front joint initiative. They discussed Ukrainian cinema, which today is not just art, but a cultural and informational weapon and an opportunity to tell the world the truth about the horrors of war.

The RMA reported that Tereblechensk community allocated UAH 200,000 each for the purchase of UAVs for military units A4638 and A1551.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing russia’s actions as genocide of the Ukrainian people and the need for decolonization of the russian federation.

Troels Lund Poulsen, Danish Defense Minister, reported that starting next year, his country will stop training Ukrainian pilots for the F-16. The reason is that the country will switch to more modern F-35 aircraft. The Skrudstrup airbase will be used for the new planes, where Ukrainian pilots are currently being trained. However, Denmark will continue to contribute to the training of Ukrainians, but in other countries. He added that by the end of the training program, about 20 Ukrainians will undergo F-16 training in Denmark.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark reported that the country allocated over $21m to Ukraine and Moldova to accelerate their accession to the EU.

The EU Council extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until 4 March, 2026. Currently, almost 4.2m people displaced from Ukraine benefit from temporary protection in the EU, one third of whom are children.

Martin Jaeger, German Ambassador to Ukraine, reported that Germany sent over 40 trucks to Ukrainian border guards.

Pope Francis met with relatives of Ukrainian prisoners of war, defenders of Mariupol. Ukrainian women met with the Pope after the general audience. During the meeting with the Holy Father, the women gave him lists, information about their loved ones and symbolic gifts.

The Ukrainian-Slovak round table on regional labour market development was held in Uzhhorod organised by the Regional Development Agency of Zakarpattia oblast and the National Institute for Strategic Studies. The lack of labour resources at relocated and local enterprises, which is already acutely felt in all sectors of the regional economy, and potential ways to solve this problem were discussed.
