War in Ukraine today: latest news, 21 March 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1122 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 21 March, there were 68 combat engagements in the frontline. Ukrainian defenders are stopping the enemy, holding the line and disrupting the enemy’s plans.

The enemy fired artillery shells from the territory of the russian federation near the settlements of Kucherivka, Miropilske, and Luhivka in Sumy oblast; and Mykhailivske in Chernihiv oblast. Petrushivka, Turyia, Uhrody, Stepok and Krasnopillia in Sumy oblast were attacked by air with guided bombs.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attempted to attack the positions of the Defence Forces once near the town of Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy twice tried to advance to Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of Pishchane and Kruhliakivka. The defence forces successfully repelled the enemy attacks.

Towards Lyman, there were 12 firefights in the vicinity of Kopanky, Novomykhailivka, Nove, Zelena Dolyna, Yampolivka, Torske and Ivanivka. Four firefights are still ongoing.

Towards Siversk, Ukrainian defenders repelled one enemy attack in the vicinity of Bilohorivka. One combat engagement is ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy attacked three times in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar, Andriivka and near Predtechynr. Ukrainian defenders repelled all the attacks.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked 13 times in the vicinity of Dachne, Druzhba and Toretsk. Four firefights are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, high enemy activity is still observed. Fifteen times during the day, the enemy tried to advance to  Ukrainian positions near Zelene Pole, Yelizavetivka, Udachne, Preobrazhenka, Bohdanivka and Andriivka. One firefight is still ongoing. The enemy also carried out air strikes in the area of Pokrovsk.

Towards Novopavlivka, the aggressor attacked five times in the vicinity of Kostiantynopol and Dniproenerhiia. One firefight is still ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, Ukrainian defenders repelled one enemy attack in the vicinity of Novosilka. The enemy conducted airstrikes targeting the settlements of Shevchenko, Novodarivka, Novopil and Huliaipole.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy did not conduct any active offensive, however, it conducted airstrikes in the areas of Novodanilivka and Novoandriivka.

Towards Kherson, the enemy tried unsuccessfully to attack the positions of Ukrainian troops.

In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled one attack by the invaders, and 13 firefights have been recorded so far. The enemy carried out 7 airstrikes, dropping 8 guided bombs on settlements and positions of the Defence Forces. In addition, it carried out 155 artillery attacks, including three from multiple launch rocket systems.

Ukrainian troops are depleting the enemy along the entire frontline and in the rear.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that since the evening of 20 March, russia has attacked the territory of Ukraine with 214 Shahed-type attack UAVs and various types of imitation drones. They managed to destroy 114 drones, and 81 more were lost in the area.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi reports that the Ministry responded to vladimir putin’s decree, which provides for the forced expulsion of Ukrainian citizens who are in the temporarily occupied territories and in the territory of the russian federation without so-called legal grounds. He also noted that russia continues to systematically violate fundamental norms of international law, in particular, with this decree, which violates at least three international legal documents.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The General Staff said that russian units attempted to storm the area of Vovchansk once, and twice towards Pishchane and Kruhliakivka. All attacks were repelled.

The RMA says that towards Kharkiv sector, the enemy tried nine times to break through the defensive lines of the Ukrainian forces near the settlements of Kindrashivka, Mala Shapkivka, Hlyboke and Vovchansk.

There were eight attacks towards Kupiansk yesterday. Ukarinain defenders repelled the enemy’s assault in the vicinity of Pishchane, Ivanivka, Kruhliakivka, Zahryzove and towards Petropavlivka.

Shelling

At 18:00, Kupiansk region, Stetskivka village came under attack by the russian federation. As a result of the shelling, grass caught fire in an open area, a private house, a garage and a power line were damaged.

At 18:00, Lozova region, the village of Mykhailivka came under attack by the russian federation. An attack UAV of unknown type was spotted outside the settlement.

 At 14:45, Kupiansk region, Prykolotne village came under attack from a UAV.  A hit from a Molniya-2 UAV damaged the roof, windows, and doors of an industrial building.

At 14:19, Kharkiv region, the village of Tsyrkuny came under attack by russian troops. As a result of the shelling, an outbuilding and straw caught fire over an area of 19 m². Also, grass caught fire nearby on an area of 300 m².

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

 The General Staff said that the russian occupation army is increasing the number of attacks towards Lyman.The russian army attacked the positions of the Defence Forces 22 times towards Nove, Novomykhailivka and near Yampolivka, Kopanky and Nadiia. The day before, there were 15 attacks. 

Ukrainian troops repelled most of the attacks near Pokrovsk. Russian troops carried out 53 attacks, in particular, near Oleksandropil, Zelene Pole, Novotoretske, Zvirove, Kotlynove and Andriivka, as well as towards Muravka and Kotliarivka.

The occupants stormed Ukrainian positions 25 more times towards Toretsk and near Dachne and Druzhba. 

Shelling

The police recorded 3,903 enemy attacks on the frontline and residential areas. The enemy fired at the cities of Dobropillia, Kramatorsk, Rodynske, Toretsk, and the villages of Zoria and Serhiivka. 77 civilian objects were damaged, including 52 residential buildings.

A russian Molniya UAV struck Dobropillia, injuring three civilians, including an 11-year-old boy. Two apartment blocks and 10 private houses, as well as 7 civilian cars were destroyed.

russian troops attacked Kramatorsk with Iskander-M and Granat-4 UAVs, wounding four residents, damaging 27 apartment buildings, an administrative building, an educational institution, a garage cooperative and cars.

The occupiers dropped three FAB-250 bombs on Zoria in Kramatorsk region, damaging three apartment buildings, 6 private houses, 5 garages, and two motorcycles.

Rodynske came under fire twice: yesterday an apartment building was damaged in the town, and in the morning a trade kiosk and a civilian car were damaged.

In Serhiivka, Pokrovsk region, three households were damaged by a KAB-250 bomb.

In addition, one person was reported dead and one wounded in Pokrovsk as a result of the shelling on 19 March.

Luhansk oblast

Towards Lyman, the Ukrainian Armed Forces stopped the enemy near Nadiia, towards Siversk – in Bilohorivka. The occupants had artillery and air support. The enemy sent 287 drones towards the settlements located along the contact line and our positions.

The Kremlin is demanding that Ukrainian citizens leave the regions of russia by 10 September. The decree was enacted yesterday. The invaders oblige Ukrainians to leave on their own by the specified date. Or have time to regulate their legal status. In fact, this is an ultimatum to the residents of the occupied territories of Ukraine to obtain russian citizenship.

In addition, foreigners who have been in the occupied territories for more than 90 days must confirm the absence of HIV infection, present a certificate of absence of infectious diseases, and prove that they do not use narcotic or psychotropic substances by 10 June. Otherwise, they threaten to refuse a temporary residence permit in Russia. If you have a russian passport, you do not need to do this.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that on the night of 21 March, russian drones damaged houses, cars and outbuildings in Kyiv oblast. There were no civilian casualties or damage to critical infrastructure.

Private houses were damaged in Brovary and Boryspil regions. Windows were smashed, facades slashed and roofs damaged. In Fastiv region, an outbuilding and a metal shed were damaged. In Obukhiv district, a car and a garage were affected.

Czech President Petr Pavel visited Kyiv oblast. Together with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he paid tribute to the memory of Ukrainian fallen soldiers who fought for Ukraine’s freedom in Moshchun.

Timur Tkachenko, Head of KCMA, announced that from today, public transport in Kyiv will operate during alerts.

The State Emergency Service of Kyiv oblast reported that a Safety Class was opened in Kryvyi Rih Gymnasium, a learning space where students will learn the basics of life safety, fire and mine safety, civil protection, first aid, and emergency response algorithms. The classroom is equipped with modern technology and divided into thematic zones.

The State Film Agency of Ukraine reported that the filming of the military drama ‘ Lutii Beresen’ directed by Serhii Sotnychenko has started in Ukraine. The film is based on real events that took place in Irpin in 2022.

Zhytomyr oblast

The founder of the Athletes For Ukraine Foundation, Jens Steiningen, visited Zhytomyr oblast. The organisation supports Ukraine and works to ban athletes from aggressor countries from international competitions.The main purpose of the visit is to demonstrate support for Ukraine and establish closer ties with the Ukrainian government. 

According to the RMA, over the three years of its existence, the foundation has delivered over UAH 160 million in aid to Ukraine, supporting many Ukrainian athletes and people affected by the war.

In the near future, a new art project, ‘Wound of the Universe’, will be organised in Zhytomyr oblast, with the main task of adapting the soldiers after the fighting through contemporary art. It is being initiated by the Department of Culture of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration and the S.P. Korolev National Museum of Cosmonautics. The project will be supported by an American volunteer, Winnie Huang, who has been helping Ukrainian internally displaced persons and the military, and advocating for Ukraine’s interests in the US Congress and Senate.

Sumy oblast

In Krasnopillia community, three outbuildings and private properties were damaged as a result of a ПAB attack.  According to the Regional Military Administration, russian forces carried out one strike by an FPV-drone and launched 27 GABs on the community.

In Nyzhnia Syrovatka community, the enemy carried out four drone strikes. As a result of the attack, 13 private houses, 11 summer houses, 3 outbuildings, 12 cars, and 2 tractors were damaged.

Overall, during the night and morning, russians carried out 54 shellings of border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast. A total of 54 explosions were recorded. The shellings affected Stepanivka, Nyzhnia Syrovatka, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Okhtyrka, and Seredyna-Buda communities.

On 21 March, in the skies over Sumy oblast, regional air defence units destroyed 14 enemy ‘Shahed’ drones..

Over the past day, russian forces carried out 112 shellings in Sumy oblast, with a total of 187 strikes recorded. The enemy used mortars (50 explosions), artillery (8 explosions), self-propelled guns (24 explosions), a tank (1 explosion), anti-tank grenade launchers (9 explosions), conducted FPV-drone attacks (13 explosions), launched GABs (38 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from drones (44 explosions). Eight communities came under enemy fire: Mykolaivka, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, and Seredyna-Buda.

The Regional Military Administration reported that as a result of enemy shelling on 20 March in Krasnopillia community, two civilians were killed, one civilian was injured, and three private properties and a two-storey apartment building were damaged. Additionally, three private properties were damaged in Mykolaivka community.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of the Regional Military Administration, informed that from the settlements of Yunakivka and Myropillia communities, where mandatory evacuation was announced, 37 children have been evacuated. Two children still remain there. The evacuation in this area is complicated as a bridge on the evacuation route has been destroyed, and the roads are controlled by russian FPV-drones. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are providing air defence cover for the evacuation vehicles.

National Police of Oblast announced that ‘White Angels’ crew evacuated 35 residents from the border areas of Sumy oblast, specifically from Myropillia and Krasnopillia communities, within a day. Police transported 35 people to safe areas, 14 of whom were persons with limited mobility.

Volunteers from ‘Animal Rescue Kharkiv’ evacuated over 50 animals from a farm in Myropillia. All were transported in three trips: around 20 cows, 9 adult horses, three donkeys, a small pony, sheep, goats, dogs, and cats. The farm, located just 2.5km from russia, was constantly shelled by the russian army, with several animals killed and many injured. The evacuated animals, along with the farm workers, have been temporarily relocated to the village of Osoivka.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that on 20 March, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling by mortars (3 explosions), barrel artillery (8 explosions), FPV-drone strikes (34 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (26 explosions). Explosions were reported towards 13 villages and the town of Semenivka.

As a result of FPV-drone strikes on the town of Semenivka, a private residential house was damaged, and a civilian car caught fire. In Khotiivka village in Semenivka community, a farm was damaged.

According to Andriy Shemets, the Director of the Regional State Administration’s Department of Family, Youth, and Sports, the ski base in Chernihiv, which was destroyed by russian forces in March 2022, will be rebuilt after the war ends. For now, he stated, the priority for reconstruction is critical infrastructure and housing. According to calculations made in 2024, approximately UAH300m. will be required to rebuild the premises and infrastructure.

Nataliia Kalmykova, Ukraine’s Minister for Veterans Affairs, announced that on 19 March, ‘Veteran Care Spaces’ were officially opened at Chernihiv Regional Hospital and Nizhyn Central City Hospital.  Veterans can receive assistance there with document processing, as well as legal and psychological consultations.

The Regional Military Administration reported that six communities in Chernihiv oblast will receive 1,152 solar panels from donors. The alternative power sources were delivered to the region by the charitable foundation ‘Mission of Solidarity.’ The equipment will be provided to municipal enterprises to ensure energy efficiency and independence in water supply and sewage systems, to medical institutions, resilience points, veteran businesses, and to individuals affected by the war.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, said that last night, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region several times.  They fired from artillery and dropped ammunition from drones. They targeted the district centre, Marhanets and Myrove communities.  A 23-year-old man was injured in Nikopol as a result of the shelling, he received the necessary medical care. A multi-storey building, an unused building and a power line were damaged. 

There were almost a dozen attacks in Nikopol region. The enemy fired at the area with artillery and drones. They targeted the district centre, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka and Pokrovske communities. A 43-year-old man was wounded and will be treated at home. 16 private houses, 6 outbuildings, 2 greenhouses and a power line were damaged. 

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, reported that at night in Kirovohrad oblast, defenders shot down russian UAVs. 

Poltava oblast

In Poltava, four soldiers who were killed during the full-scale invasion while defending the territorial integrity of Ukraine said goodbye. These are soldiers Oleksandr Lishchynskyi, Mykola Matvienko, Oleksandr Parfyliuk and Oleksandr Yashchenko.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

During the night of 20 March, the russian army shelled a settlement in Zaporizhzhia region. Six people, including a 4-year-old boy, were injured. As a result of the attack, houses were destroyed, and vehicles were damaged. As of the morning, it was confirmed that two houses were uninhabitable.

Overall, during the past day, the occupiers launched 492 attacks on 12 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces carried out 10 airstrikes on Kushuhum, Rizdvianka, Nizhna Khortytsia, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, and Charivne. 330 drones of various modifications targeted Malokaterynivka, Kamianske, Piatykhatky, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Novodarivka, and Charivne. Five MLRS attacks struck Piatykhatky, Shcherbaky, Mala Tokmachka, and Novodarivka. Additionally, 147 artillery strikes hit Kamianske, Piatykhatky, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka. 31 reports were received about the destruction of vehicles, residential buildings, and infrastructure objects. Six people were injured as a result of the enemy strike on Zaporizhzhia region.

Ukrainian defenders repelled one enemy attack near Novosilka towards Huliaipole. The enemy did not conduct active offensive operations towards Orikhiv but carried out airstrikes on Novodanylivka and Novoandriivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

On 20 March, the enemy attacked Kutsurub community nine times with FPV drones and carried out two artillery strikes. There were no casualties.

Odesa oblast

On 20 March, approximately between 10:00 pm and 11:30 pm, the russian armed forces launched a massive drone attack on Odesa. Civilian infrastructure was targeted. As a result of the attack, three 17-year-old boys were injured. The minors were diagnosed with burns and received medical assistance. Buildings of two shopping centers, several stores, an auto repair shop, a car dealership, warehouse facilities of a private enterprise, a hypermarket building, and residents’ cars were damaged or destroyed. According to the State Emergency Service of Odesa oblast, over 70 rescuers, five volunteers, and 23 units of equipment were involved in eliminating the consequences.

On the night of 21 March, a repeated drone attack also damaged civilian infrastructure in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi region.

During the night of 21 March, the southern air defense of Ukraine destroyed 27 strike drones of the “Shahed” type and other types of UAVs over Odesa oblast.

As part of his working visit to Odesa, Czech President Petr Pavel met with the Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, Oleksii Neizhpapa. During the meeting, they discussed the security of civilian shipping, enemy attacks on Ukraine’s port infrastructure, and the operation of the maritime corridor.

As of 6:00 a, on 21 March, four enemy ships were present in the Mediterranean Sea, including three carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total salvo of up to 26 missiles.

Over the past day, 19 ships passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea in russia’s interest, while two more vessels entered the Sea of Azov.

Kherson oblast

Around 7:00 pm, russian forces attacked a cyclist with a drone in Tomyna Balka. A 56-year-old man sustained blast and traumatic brain injuries, as well as shrapnel wounds to his legs.

In the morning,  in Bilozerka, russian forces attacked an elderly man with a drone while he was riding home on a moped. He was killed in the attack.

A man who was injured in a russian drone attack in Antonivka was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The 64-year-old victim suffered a blast injury, abdominal wounds, as well as fractures of the jaw, foot, and kneecap.

Today, russian forces attacked a civilian car with a drone in Bilozerka. Two people were injured.

In the morning, russians attacked Stanislav with a drone. Two people sustained injuries, including blast and traumatic brain injuries, as well as concussions.

Also in the morning, russian forces attacked a woman with a drone in Kherson. Preliminary reports indicate that the 57-year-old woman suffered a blast injury.

An ambulance transported three people to the hospital who had been injured in a russian shelling of Kindiika last evening. A 69-year-old man and two women, aged 75 and 50, were diagnosed with blast injuries, concussions, and acute stress reactions.

Two residents of Bilozerka sought medical assistance after being injured in a russian shelling on 18 March. They suffered blast injuries, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries.

Medical assistance was also needed for a resident of Shyroka Balka who was hit by a russian drone attack on 19 March. The 49-year-old man was diagnosed with a blast injury, a concussion, and a leg wound.

Yesterday, the enemy attacked Antonivka, Beryslav, Stanislav, Shliakhove, Bilozerka, Biliaivka, Dudchany, Monastyrske, Chervonyi Maiak, Veletenske, Sukhanove, Zelenivka, Novoraisk, Sadove, Prydniprovske, Inzhenerne, Khreshchenivka, Kachkarivka, Burhunka, Zmiivka, Zolota Balka, Kizomys, Kostyrka, Lvove, Mykilske, Novoberyslav, Novovorontsovka, Novooleksandrivka, Odradokamianka, Olhivka, Osokorivka, Rozlyv, Sabliukivka, Tokarivka, Tomyna Balka, Ukrainka, and the city of Kherson. As a result of these attacks, six apartment buildings and nine private homes, along with civilian vehicles, were damaged. One person was killed and three others were injured due to russian aggression.

The Ukrainian Southern Defense Forces continue striking enemy locations, firing positions, and supply lines. Over the past day, russian losses amounted to 103 personnel, 43 artillery systems, 45 vehicles and armored units, 18 guns, 1 Msta-B howitzer, 1 Buk-M1 air defense system, 9 Supercam-type UAVs, 3 Zala-type UAVs, 1 quad bike, 10 motorcycles, 3 buggies, 7 boats, 4 electronic warfare systems, 2 surveillance cameras, 3 generators, 3 transformers, 4 communication antennas, 2 Starlink antennas, 3 ammunition storage sites, 1 fuel and lubricant storage site. Additionally, 67 enemy shelters/bunkers and 1 observation post were destroyed.

Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence reported that on 20 March, a vehicle exploded in the temporarily occupied town of Skadovsk. A Nissan pickup truck carrying two russian army officers was targeted. Photos from the scene show the vehicle was significantly damaged.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Lutsk, the The Last Buckwheat performance of the play was organized for the military, their families and families of fallen defenders. In total, about 400 people from the entire oblast came to Lutsk.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 50 bags with grocery sets and 90 loaves of bread. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,750 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Spletinnia Kosice, Valentyn Stefanio and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

4 cars specially equipped for transporting people with disabilities were sent to communities of the oblast. In total, the oblast received over UAH 11m for this in 2024.

Lviv oblast

A Center for Spiritual and Psychological Support has been opened in Lviv. The center offers individual therapy, group classes, support in difficult situations, and self-help groups for military families and people with PTSD.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, awarded Volodymyr Savko, defender from Yavoriv region (posthumously) with the III degree For Courage Order. In May 2024, he joined the Defense Forces. In September of the same year, he was seriously wounded while performing a combat mission in Kursk region. During treatment, Volodymyr’s heart stopped beating.

Rivne oblast

Oleksandr Koval, Head of the RMA, met with Martin Harris, Ambassador of Great Britain to Ukraine, at the regional veterans’ hospital. They discussed energy, international cooperation, culture, and the hospital.

Ternopil oblast

Volunteers of the Army Aid from Ternopil successfully delivered 2 quadcopters, 3 anti-drone rifles, 3 electronic warfare systems and a NISSAN NAVARA vehicle to the frontline for the 83rd Battalion of the 105th Territorial Defense Brigade.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA held an online meeting with representatives of FamilySearch, an international organization engaged in digitizing historical documents. They discussed further cooperation in preserving the archival heritage of the oblast.

Chernivtsi oblast

7 projects, the partners of which are representatives of Chernivtsi oblast, have been selected for funding within the framework of the Interreg NEXT Romania – Ukraine cross-border cooperation program 2021-2027. Participation in cross-border cooperation programs opens up new opportunities for the socio-economic development of the oblast.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine has received €1bn from the EU under the ERA initiative. This is the 2nd tranche from the EU, secured by proceeds from frozen russian assets.

Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission President, announced that Ukraine will have the opportunity to participate in projects under SAFE, a new European Union loan program worth up to €150bn.

Ukraine received 9 backup power plants from Switzerland and the Netherlands. The corresponding equipment was sent for the needs of gas infrastructure.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Petr Pavel, President of the Czech Republic. They discussed details of the situation on the front and in the war in general.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Masoud Garahani, President The Norwegian Storting, and Heads of political parties represented in parliament discussed consolidating international support at the parliamentary level.
