Ukraine’s Defense Forces Hold Back the Enemy: Operational Update
The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue to firmly hold their positions and repel Russian assaults. As of now, there have been 79 combat clashes.
Shelling of Civilian Communities
Today, communities in Sumy region (Bila Bereza, Studenok, Cherkaske, Hirky, Prohres, Novovasylivka) and Chernihiv region (Karpovychi, Bleshna, Bohdanove) suffered from enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Northern Front
- On the Northern Sloboda and Kursk axes, the enemy carried out four assaults. Russian aviation conducted four strikes, dropping five guided aerial bombs. A total of 115 artillery attacks were recorded, including one from multiple launch rocket systems.
- On the Southern Sloboda axis, five combat engagements took place in the areas of Vovchansk, Krasne Pershe, and toward Bochkove. Two of them are still ongoing.
Eastern Front
- On the Kupiansk axis, the enemy attempted one assault toward Myrne without success. Ukrainian defenders advanced up to 200 meters in some areas and inflicted losses on enemy forces.
- On the Lyman axis, seven enemy attacks targeted positions near Hrekivka, Novomyhailivka, Shandryholove, and toward Novoselivka. Four clashes are ongoing.
- On the Siversk axis, Ukrainian defenders repelled three attacks toward Dronivka, advanced up to 200 meters in some areas, and eliminated enemy infantry.
- On the Kramatorsk axis, the enemy unsuccessfully attacked near Chasiv Yar.
- On the Toretsk axis, Ukrainian forces repelled eight enemy assaults near Ivanopillia, Shcherbynivka, Pleshchiivka, Stepanivka, Rusyn Yar, Poltavka, and Sofiivka. They also advanced up to 300 meters in some areas. Two battles are ongoing.
- On the Pokrovsk axis, Russian forces launched 23 assaults near Volodymyrivka, Nykanorivka, Rodynske, Chervonyi Lyman, Novoekonomichne, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Dachne, and toward Kozatske and Novopavlivka. Ukrainian forces have already repelled 17 attacks.
Southern Front
- On the Novopavlivka axis, Ukrainian defenders conducted successful strike-and-search operations, advancing up to 3 km, destroying large numbers of enemy troops, and capturing prisoners. Six enemy assaults were repelled near Filiia, Andriivka-Klevtsove, Sichneve, Maliivka, Komyshuvakha, Novoivanivka, and toward Berezove and Novovasylivske. Six clashes are still ongoing.
- On the Huliaipole axis, the enemy carried out three assaults near Olhivske, one battle is ongoing. Russian forces also launched an airstrike on Bilohiria.
- On the Orikhiv axis, Ukrainian troops repelled an attack toward Novoandriivka.
- On the Prydniprovskyi axis, the enemy launched an airstrike on Kozatske and attempted two unsuccessful assaults toward the Antonivskyi Bridge.

Kharkiv oblast
Frontline
The General Staff reported that at 22:00, the occupier attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders towards Southern Sloboda seven times in the vicinity of Vovchansk, Krasne Pershe and towards Bochkove. Three attacks are still ongoing.
Towards Kupiansk, russia carried out two offensive actions near Mirne.
The defense forces were successful towards Kupyansk, advancing up to 200 meters in some areas and inflicting russian losses in manpower.
According to the General Staff, towards Kupiansk, the occupier unsuccessfully attacked the positions of Ukrainian units in the direction of Mirne once. Towards Southern Sloboda, five clashes took place in the areas of Vovchansk, Krasne Pershe and towards Bochkove. Two clashes are ongoing.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that in Kupiansk, the Defense Forces are conducting counter-sabotage measures and are clearing the city of occupiers.
There were 165 combat clashes in the oblast.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy stormed the positions of our units five times near the settlements of Vovchansk, Fiholivka and Odradne.
Towards Kupiansk, three attacks by the occupiers took place over the past 24 hours. The Defense Forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions in the vicinity of Stepova Novoselivka and Pishchane.
Shelling
Viktor Kovalenko, Head of the community, informs that near midnight, russians struck the village of Tymofiivka in Zolochiv community with FPV drones. As a result of the hits, a private house, outbuildings and power grids were damaged. The residents of the house that russia struck evacuated less than a day before the attack.
5 settlements were hit by enemy strikes. There were no casualties as a result of the shelling.
A 60-year-old woman who was injured as a result of the shelling of the village of Syriaky, Solonytsivska community on September 8, sought medical attention.
The enemy actively used various types of weapons:

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv RMA, reports that on September 19, a 60-year-old woman who was injured as a result of the shelling of the Syriaki Solonytsivska community on September 8 sought medical attention.
The first social restoration workshop has opened in Kharkiv. Architect Viktor Dvornikov says that up to 10 people are currently working on restoring old windows in the Ocheret theater, which is located in the Druk cultural and artistic space.
Donetsk oblast
Frontline
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported in the morning briefing that russian troops carried out 33 attacks towards Novopavlivka. The invaders stormed the border of Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, in particular, near Filiia, Berezove, Novoivanivka, Zelenyi Hai, Sichneve and Olhivske.
The largest number of battles during the day was recorded near Pokrovskoye – 50, more than ten assaults were towards Lyman and Toretsk.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reports that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are conducting a counteroffensive operation near Dobropillia and Pokrovske: they took control of 330 square kilometers of territories, of which 160 were liberated, another 170 were cleared. russian troops are trying to hold the area and transferred the 61st russian Marine Brigade to the direction. The offensive operation near Dobropillia is being carried out by fighters from several airborne assault brigades, the National Guard and assault units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
An agent of the ATESH movement scouted the positions of the Russian MLRS “Grad”, which was shelling frontline villages in the Donetsk region. After that, the installation was destroyed by the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
Shelling
On September 19, the police recorded 1,977 enemy strikes on the front line and residential sector. One person was killed, five were injured – the consequences of russian shelling of the Donetsk region.
6 settlements were under fire: the cities of Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Pokrovsk, the village of Yampil, the village of Kryvorizhzhe.
27 civilian objects were destroyed, including 22 residential buildings.

russians attacked Kostiantynivka 9 times with bombs, drones and artillery – one civilian was killed, three more were injured. 7 apartment buildings and 2 private houses, a sports complex, a shopping mall, critical infrastructure were damaged.
One person was injured in Pokrovsk and one in Yampol.
In Kramatorsk, 2 private houses were damaged as a result of a drone attack.
In Druzhkivka, a Geran-3 UAV damaged 2 private houses and an enterprise.
Russian troops sent two KAB-250 bombs and a Geran-2 UAV to Kryvyi Rih, Pokrovsky district – 9 private houses were damaged.
A car carrying a Channel 5 film crew was hit by a landmine near Pokrovskoye on Thursday, September 18, at around 2:00 p.m. According to the RMA, the injured journalist was hospitalized in Kramatorsk Hospital, where she was diagnosed with mine-explosive and acubarotrauma.
Other
Kostiantynivka RMA reports that seven people and pets were evacuated from Kostiantynivka. They were taken into the care of volunteers from the Angels of Salvation charity fund.
Luhansk oblast
Oleksiy Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional State Administration, reports that the occupiers directed 26 UAVs and FPV drones at the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine along the line of combat contact. Artillery installations were involved 10 times. They launched 15 assaults towards Lyman They attacked towards Siverskaya nine times.
Over the past six months, russians regularly suspended water supply to Alchevsk, Kadiivka, Bryanka and nearby settlements. They allegedly announced a large-scale replacement of water mains. However, there is no drinking water in these cities even now, because another accident occurred on the main water main. About 250 thousand people were left without water.
In the temporarily occupied Siverskodonetsk, the authorities organized classes on digital literacy and cybersecurity for schoolchildren. The city has had no internet since the beginning of the occupation, so education was limited to oral lectures.


The Kyiv City Military Administration conducted training for 60 employees of district administrations who will serve as social managers for residents affected by russian aggression. These specialists accompany victims from the very beginning until they receive all necessary assistance.
According to Borys Todurov, director of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, a bullet was removed from the heart of a Ukrainian soldier who had lived with it for three years. The wounded soldier defended Azovstal and was taken captive during the attack on Mariupol. He spent three years in captivity before being exchanged two months ago.
The Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Kyiv City Administration approved emergency stabilization and conservation works on the Government Building damaged in the russian strike on September 7. The upper floors and roof were destroyed, causing a fire that had to be extinguished by helicopter. The building is a local architectural monument.
In Kyiv, wounded servicemen of the Ministry of Internal Affairs system, as well as police officers and rescuers undergoing treatment and rehabilitation, are actively recovering through swimming exercises. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, they perform special adaptive training in the pool under the supervision of an experienced coach.
Zhytomyr oblast
Starting September 30, Zhytomyr will relaunch the Veterans’ Entrepreneurship Academy – a program of classes designed to teach veterans returning from the front how to run their own businesses. According to the city council, the academy is organized by the city’s Department for Veterans Affairs. The program includes a free business course for war veterans, people with war-related disabilities, their families, and families of fallen defenders of Ukraine.
New Shelter Under Construction at Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Zhytomyr
A new bomb shelter is being built on the grounds of the “Sunny House” Regional Center for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children in Zhytomyr. The construction cost is about 15 million UAH, and the shelter is designed to accommodate 78 people. The project is part of the international technical assistance initiative “Construction of a Bomb Shelter for a Children’s Shelter in Zhytomyr, Ukraine”, carried out in partnership between the Estonian Centre for International Development and the private company “Aleksandr and I”.
Sumy oblast
On the Northern Sloboda and Kursk directions, nine combat clashes took place over the past day, according to the General Staff. Russian forces carried out nine airstrikes, dropped 27 guided bombs, and launched 146 attacks on the positions of our troops and settlements, including three using multiple launch rocket systems.
The enemy attacked the Vorozhba community in Sumy region with drones, the city council reported. As a result of the fire, farm buildings were destroyed and a road was damaged. No casualties were reported.
On the morning of September 20, Russian forces struck the industrial zone of the Kovpakivskyi district of Sumy with MLRS, acting mayor Artem Kobzar said. According to the head of the Military Administration, Serhii Kryvoshchenko, power lines were damaged by the shelling, leaving part of the Kovpakivskyi district without electricity.
During the day, from the morning of September 19 to the morning of September 20, Russian forces carried out 99 attacks on 41 settlements across 14 territorial communities of the region. The most shelling was recorded in Sumy and Shostka districts. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (20 strikes), dropped VOG grenades from drones (up to 10 strikes), and also launched drone, FPV drone, and MLRS attacks on the territory of Sumy region.
As a result of Russian strikes on the region, in the Bilopillia community a civilian infrastructure facility, a private house, and a car were damaged, while in the Yunakivka community two private houses were damaged.
In Okhtyrka, a district office of the public organization “Defense of the State” was opened, which focuses on veterans and their families. It is headed by volunteer and wife of the fallen volunteer soldier Serhii Pustovyi – Svitlana Pustova. Plans include expanding the team, providing legal and psychological support for veterans, their families, as well as for the families of the fallen, the missing, and those held in captivity.
Chernihiv oblast
On September 20, two Russian drones crashed in Chernihiv, according to the head of the Chernihiv City Military Administration, Dmytro Bryzhynskyi. The crashes damaged transport infrastructure, but no casualties were reported.
Due to the security situation, a number of trains in the Chernihiv region have been delayed indefinitely, Ukrzaliznytsia reported.
On the evening of September 19, the Russian army attacked a cemetery in Chernihiv, destroying and damaging gravestones, the regional police reported.
As a result of a drone attack on September 19 in the Borzna community of Chernihiv region, teacher Olha Savchenko from the village of Olenivka was killed, the city council reported. Six other people were injured. A residential building in the community was damaged, and a fire broke out there.
On September 19, Russian drones struck the Chernihiv district. Three civilians traveling in a car — the driver and two passengers — were injured. Paramedics responded to the call, but due to a repeated strike, three medical workers were also wounded.
Throughout September 19, Russian forces attacked four border communities of Chernihiv region: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk, and Horodnia. A total of 54 explosions were recorded in nine villages, according to the Chernihiv Border Detachment. Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the oblast council, says that at night, the enemy massively attacked the region with missiles and UAVs. 13 people were injured.
Due to the attack in Dnipro and Dniprovskyi district, fires broke out, a high-rise building, private homes, outbuildings, garages, and enterprises were damaged.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that a 60-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman were injured as a result of the russian FPV drone strike on Malokaterynivka in Zaporizhzhia oblast.
The Defense Forces repelled two russian army attacks near Stepnohirsk and Kamianske towards Orikhiv. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there were no offensive actions towards Hulyaipole.
According to the Regional Military Administration, yesterday a married couple was killed in Hulyaipole: the woman was 56, the man 58.
Yesterday, 19 September, russian forces launched 521 strikes on 15 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Ivan Fedorov, head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that three people were killed as a result of russian shelling in Vasylivka and Polohy regions.
Mykolaiv oblast
On the morning of 20 September, the russian army launched a massive combined strike with ballistic missiles and Shahed drones on Mykolaiv. Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that industrial infrastructure was targeted, causing fires.
The RMA reported that during the night of 20 September, russian forces attacked a farm in Snihurivka community with Shahed drones. The blast wave damaged private houses and cars.
According to Mykolaiv RMA, that same night, 28 Shahed drones and decoy UAVs of various types were destroyed in the region.
The RMA reported that on 19 September, russian forces attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities with FPV drones. A private house was damaged In Dmytrivka. No casualties were reported.
Odesa oblast
At night, russian forces attacked Odesa oblast. As a result of the strike, a fire engulfed a farm warehouse and destroyed a building housing agricultural equipment. Rescuers extinguished the fire. According to the State Emergency Service, there were no casualties.
The RMA reported that border guards of Odesa detachment shot down two drones during the nighttime air raid alert. Their debris fell into the Black Sea.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that on the night of 20 September, an unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted over the Black Sea, heading south toward Odesa oblast.
Kherson oblast
Evacuation from Inhulets is ongoing. The Kherson RMA reported that 219 people, including 78 children, left the village due to recent russian airstrikes.
Ukrainian fighters in the south destroyed 18 Shaheds, two artillery systems, an electronic warfare system, and 20 russian military vehicles over the past day. According to the Southern Defense Forces, they also demolished 19 shelters and eliminated 34 russian occupiers,

The online platform contains information about 28 institutions that provide various types of assistance: physical and psychological rehabilitation; legal support; educational programs and health services.
Lviv oblast
During the air alert, which lasted from 05:46am to 06:54am on 20 September, air defense soldiers shot down 2 enemy cruise missiles over Lviv oblast. There were no casualties or injuries.
In Lviv oblast during a charity auction held by Birds of Victory held together with the Shuvar group of companies, raised over UAH 10m. Funds raised will be used to purchase drones for the military, as well as for prosthetics for soldier Mykhailo Korzh from the 77th Separate Airmobile Brigade.
The Circle of Brothers team of the Veteran Space from Morshyn delivered to the front line essential items, hygiene products and camouflage nets that save the lives of our soldiers. Volunteers of the TVORY DOBRO TEAM CF from Khodoriv, singing at the local market, collected funds in the amount of over UAH 12,000, which were transferred to the needs of the brigade of their compatriot Yurii Barankevich.
Rivne oblast
The RMA reported that in 2025, the RMA, together with the communities of the oblast, have allocated over UAH 1bn for the needs of the Security and Defense Forces.
Ternopil oblast
In 2025, the regional budget provides UAH 675.2m for strengthening the country’s defense capabilities and supporting the military. Of this amount, UAH 115.3m will come from the regional budget; UAH 559.9m will come from budgets of territorial communities.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
At night, the enemy attacked Khmelnytskyi i oblast. The Air Defense Forces were working. During the night attack, air defense forces destroyed 7 enemy cruise missiles over the territory of the i oblast. As a result of the enemy attack in Dunayevets community, during the liquidation of the fire in one of the houses, the body of a deceased man, born in 1979, was discovered. 2 local residents also sought medical help, without hospitalization. 2 houses were destroyed, and approximately 20 residential buildings were damaged. All relevant services are working at the scene.
Chernivtsi oblast
A farewell was held for a serviceman who died defending Ukraine from Russian occupiers. Senior Sailor Ivan Sedov served in military unit A2802.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
