The Defense Forces of Ukraine are holding back the advance of Russian occupiers.
As of now, the total number of combat engagements stands at 71.
Communities in the settlements of Stara Huta, Havrylova Sloboda, Seredyna-Buda, Tovstodubove, Bobylivka, Ulanove, Bila Bereza, Boyaro-Lezhachi in Sumy region suffered from enemy artillery and mortar fire. Enemy aviation carried out an airstrike on the area of Stara Huta, Sumy region.
In the Northern-Slobozhanske and Kursk directions, there was one enemy attack today. The invaders’ aviation carried out 8 strikes, dropping 19 guided aerial bombs. In addition, the enemy conducted 124 artillery attacks on the positions of our troops and settlements, 11 of them from multiple launch rocket systems.
In the Southern-Slobozhanske direction, there were five combat clashes in the areas of Vovchansk, Ambarne, Fiholivka, and towards Katerynivka. Two combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy unsuccessfully attacked Ukrainian positions once towards Kupiansk.
In the Lyman direction, the invading army carried out 24 attacks on Ukrainian positions near the settlements of Karpivka, Ridkodub, Kolodiazi, Myrne, Torske, and towards Olhivka, Shandryholove, Yampil, Dronivka, Hryhorivka. Six combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Siversk direction, since the beginning of the day, the enemy has attacked three times near Hryhorivka, Pereizne, and towards Fedorivka.
In the Kramatorsk direction, the enemy unsuccessfully attempted an attack towards the settlement of Stupochky.
In the Toretsk direction, our defenders repelled two enemy attempts to break through our defenses near Toretsk and Shcherbynivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, since the beginning of the day, Russian occupiers have made 20 attempts to push our soldiers from their positions near the settlements of Volodymyrivka, Nikanorivka, Fedorivka, Novoekonomichne, Myroliubivka, Rodynske, Zvirove, Kotlyne, Udachne, Orikhove, Dachne, and towards Myrnohrad. The Defense Forces are holding back the pressure and have already repelled 16 attacks.
In the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian defenders stopped eight enemy assaults near the settlements of Tolstoi, Shevchenko, Voskresenka, Zelene Pole, and towards Filiia, Komyshuvakha, Sichneve, and Novohryhorivka, while five combat clashes are still ongoing.
In the Huliaipole direction, the enemy did not conduct assault operations.
In the Orikhiv direction, our defenders repelled one enemy attack towards Prymorske. Enemy aviation carried out an airstrike in the area of Bilohiria.
In the Prydniprovske direction, the enemy carried out airstrikes on the settlements of Burhunka, Mykolaivka, L’vove, and made one unsuccessful attempt to approach Ukrainian positions.
Two girls who had lived under occupation for three years have returned to Ukraine-controlled territory. Despite threats and coercion to study in Russian schools, they preserved their Ukrainian identity and continued online schooling in Ukrainian institutions. Now the girls are safe with their families, according to the President’s Office.
In 15 regions of Ukraine and in Kyiv, 30,000 places will be prepared for citizens evacuated from frontline areas. The transit center in Pavlohrad is operating at the limits of its capacity. This summer alone, more than 52,000 people have been evacuated from Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions, including thousands of children and hundreds of people with limited mobility. To relieve the center, new transit points will be opened in Lozova and Voloske. Last week, volunteers raised the alarm about the overcrowded transit center in Pavlohrad. On August 13, 14, and 15, over 400 people passed through the center each day, with almost 200 staying overnight. The center has only 116 beds. People were forced to sleep in cars and sometimes in the open air. This was reported by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Kharkiv oblast
Frontline
Over the past day, 175 combat engagements were recorded.
In the Southern-Slobozhanske direction, the Defense Forces repelled five enemy attacks near the settlements of Vovchansk and Kamianka.
In the Kupiansk direction, six enemy assaults took place. The Defense Forces repelled enemy storming actions in the areas of Kindrashivka, Synkivka, Zahryzove, and Stepova Novoselivka.
Shelling
During the past day, six settlements in Kharkiv region came under enemy strikes.
Two people were injured as a result of the shelling.
In the city of Kupiansk, a 43-year-old and a 57-year-old man – emergency medical workers – were wounded.
The enemy actively used various types of weapons against Kharkiv region:
▪️ 1 KAB (guided aerial bomb);
▪️ 1 Geran-2 UAV;
▪️ 2 Lancet UAVs;
▪️ 2 FPV drones.
Civilian infrastructure was damaged and destroyed:
▪️ In Kharkiv district, a private house was damaged (Tsupivka village);
▪️ In Kupiansk district, a private house, an emergency medical vehicle, a farm (Kupiansk city), and a private house (Kurhanne village) were damaged;
▪️ In Bohodukhiv district, power lines were damaged (Bohodukhiv city).
Donetsk oblast
On August 19, police recorded 2,293 enemy strikes on the frontline and residential areas.
Nine settlements came under fire: the cities of Dobropillia, Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Lyman; the towns of Drobysheve, Yampil; the villages of Ivanopillia, Novoandriivka, and Toretske.
Damage: 92 civilian objects were destroyed or damaged, including 80 residential buildings.
- Dobropillia: Russians struck with two KAB-250 bombs and two Geran-2 UAVs, killing one civilian and injuring two others. Six apartment buildings and a maternity ward were damaged.
- Kostiantynivka: Russia dropped 12 guided aerial bombs, injuring six civilians. Twenty-two apartment buildings, four private houses, an educational institution, two administrative buildings, two shops, a café, and a civilian car were damaged.
- Lyman: A Molniya-2 UAV strike wounded one person.
- Yampil: One civilian was injured; a private house was damaged.
- Druzhkivka: The enemy attacked with three FPV drones, damaging two apartment buildings and two civilian cars.
- Ivanopillia: Three KAB-250 bombs struck, destroying 39 private houses.
- Drobysheve: A bomb strike damaged three private houses.
- Novoandriivka (Kramatorsk district): A Geran-2 UAV damaged two private houses and two farm buildings.
- Toretske (Kramatorsk district): One private house was damaged.
Luhansk oblast
On the Siversk sector of the frontline, the occupiers attacked only twice during the day, while on the neighboring Lyman sector, the enemy carried out 33 assault actions, employing artillery and aviation. In particular, multiple launch rocket systems were used four times, and 17 strikes were conducted with tube artillery. The enemy also attempted to direct more than 60 UAVs and FPV drones against our defenders.
In kindergartens of the so-called “LNR,” children will be subjected to war propaganda. The occupied Luhansk region has been included in a pilot project of the Russian authorities to introduce “Conversations about Important Things” in preschool institutions. These lessons are aimed at children aged three to seven. The occupiers are convinced that it is precisely at this age that, in their view, “proper” values and worldviews should be formed. Special methodological materials were developed for the pilot project, focused on “historical enlightenment,” intended to encourage future readiness to go to war.
The occupiers declared a regional-level emergency in the Stanichno-Luhanska and Shyrokivska communities due to their inability to contain a forest fire. The blaze has already destroyed over 500 hectares of land and more than 100 households. Strong winds continue to pose a threat of further spread. There are not enough local rescuers, and Russia has not allocated additional forces. Volunteers are being gathered. In several settlements, mobile communications and electricity supply have been cut off.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
The State Emergency Service reported that sappers seized two VOG-25 fragmentation grenades in Irpin. The grenades were found by a local resident while he was mowing grass. In addition, in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, utility workers discovered an obsolete artillery shell from World War II while repairing a section of pipeline.
The Regional State Administration reported that in Kyiv oblast, in the city of Irpin, work is continuing on a residential building at 131 Severynivska Street, damaged by russian military aggression. The building for 107 families is undergoing major repairs. According to the project, the renovation of the building will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of barrier-free access and accessibility. The landscaping of the surrounding area is also being restored.
Since the beginning of the war, a total of 217 educational institutions have been damaged in Kyiv, including 80 in 2025. At present, 138 facilities (64%) have already been restored, and work is continuing on 79 more.
Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko said that today, shelters in Kyiv’s educational institutions can accommodate almost 360,000 people. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, shelter capacity has been increased by 145,000 places. They are being equipped with backup lighting, power sources, ventilation, and Wi-Fi. All educational institutions are guarded and equipped with alarm buttons.
In 2025, the capital’s budget will allocate almost UAH 2.9 billion for the construction of new dual-purpose buildings with protective capabilities. By the end of the year, work is planned to be completed on 13 sites.
The Kyiv Regional State Administration reported that since the beginning of 2025, the “Army of Restoration” project has brought together 72 employers in 33 communities in Kyiv oblast. 8,007 residents of Kyiv oblast have joined in socially useful work, and more than UAH 65.1 million has been allocated to pay for their labour.
Zhytomyr oblast
Rescuers in Zhytomyr region have received a modern enhancement – the Colossus unmanned ground robotic system, manufactured by the French company Shark Robotics. Specialists from the Department of Unmanned Systems and Robotics of the regional State Emergency Service conducted special training for rescuers who will operate this system in real conditions in the future.
On August 19, in Zhytomyr, at the “Veteran Care Space”, a socio-psychological event was held – “Art Therapy with Musical Accompaniment: Caring for Inner Strength” – for servicemen undergoing treatment after injuries. The event was implemented within the framework of the nationwide mental health program “How Are You?”.
Sumy oblast
In the Northern-Slobozhanske and Kursk directions, seven combat engagements took place over the past day, the General Staff reported in its morning update on August 20. The Russian army carried out 12 airstrikes, dropping 26 guided aerial bombs, and conducted 218 attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements, including nine using multiple launch rocket systems.
Border guards of the “Steel Border” unit destroyed three Russian shelters, a mortar, and at least two Russian servicemen in the Northern-Slobozhanske direction, the State Border Guard Service reported.
Around midnight, Russians attacked Okhtyrka with 15 strike UAVs. Eight drones hit the residential sector. The attack caused large-scale fires, with the largest fire sites localized only by morning. Damage was recorded on five city streets. Fourteen people sought medical assistance. Among them was a family with injured children aged 5 months, 4 years, and 6 years. Currently, eight patients remain in the hospital, while the others are receiving outpatient care.
As a result of the Russian strike on Okhtyrka, 39 private houses, one two-story apartment building, as well as non-residential and industrial facilities were damaged. Three cars were destroyed or damaged. Efforts to eliminate the consequences of the enemy strikes are ongoing.

On the evening of August 19, around 18:40, a Russian FPV drone attacked a settlement in the Seredyna-Buda community, injuring two civilians. A 54-year-old man with severe wounds was hospitalized in critical condition, while a 40-year-old resident was admitted in moderate condition.
Over the past day, from the morning of August 19 to the morning of August 20, Russian forces carried out over 140 strikes against 52 settlements in 18 territorial communities of Sumy region, the Regional Military Administration reported. The heaviest shelling occurred in the Sumy, Shostka, and Okhtyrka districts. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (over 50 strikes), MLRS (up to 20 strikes), UAV-dropped munitions (10 strikes), as well as FPV drones, other UAVs, and a missile strike.
Consequences of Russian attacks as of the morning of August 20:
- Seredyna-Buda community – 2 men injured, a school building damaged;
- Okhtyrka community – 14 civilians injured, including 3 children; 1 apartment building, 13 private homes, and non-residential facilities damaged;
- Mykolaivka rural community – 2 civilians injured, 1 private house destroyed;
- Lebedyn community – a private residential house and a civilian infrastructure facility damaged;
- Velyka Pysarivka community – a household basement damaged;
- Sumy community – 2 private houses damaged;
- Kyrykivka community – a healthcare facility and an administrative building damaged.
On August 18, two civilians born in 2009 were injured in a UAV strike on the Sumy community.
During the day, local authorities together with the State Emergency Service, National Police, and NGOs evacuated 14 residents from border communities.
Over the past week, Sumy region has recorded over 680 strikes with various types of weapons. 45 civilian infrastructure facilities have been damaged or destroyed – including residential buildings, farms, businesses, and energy sites, according to regional governor Oleh Hryhorov.
Meanwhile, recovery works following the strike on the private sector of the Vilshana community have been completed, reported Valentyna Nazarenko, head of the Romny District Military Administration.
Additionally, Sumy region has received armored vehicles for the State Emergency Service. Since the beginning of this week, four specialized vehicles have been deployed within the “Phoenix” rapid response teams, which are used for evacuating people from dangerous areas and providing medical aid during enemy attacks.
Chernihiv oblast
On August 19, Russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv region – Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk, the Chernihiv Border Detachment reported. The enemy used guided aerial bombs (8 strikes), FPV drones (3 strikes), and UAV-dropped explosives (10 strikes). In total, six villages came under fire.
From the morning of August 19 to the morning of August 20, the attacks caused the following damage, according to Operational Command “North”:
- In a village of the Koriukivka community, an explosion damaged a starosta’s office;
- In a village of the Snovsk community, an enterprise was hit;
- In a village of the Novhorod-Siverskyi community, guided aerial bombs destroyed a civilian facility.
Meanwhile, in Nizhyn, a Russian drone strike on the seed research station on the morning of August 19 killed 45-year-old volunteer Yevhen Homoliako, founder and head of the STRONG Nizhyn charitable foundation. His farewell ceremony will be held on August 20 in Nizhyn.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
russian attacks targeted several districts:
- Synelnykove district:
- Strikes with guided aerial bombs (KABs) and UAVs hit Pokrovska and Mezhivska communities.
- A 62-year-old man was killed.
- Fires broke out, damaging two private houses and several cars.
- Earlier, drones attacked Brahinivska community, damaging three private houses.
- Pavlohrad:
- A strike caused a fire at a transport enterprise.
- Nikopol district:
- The city of Nikopol, as well as Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities, came under artillery and UAV attacks.
- In the evening shelling of Nikopol, a 71-year-old woman was killed, and an 82-year-old woman was injured.
- Fires broke out.
- A multi-story building, two private houses, and a rescue service vehicle were damaged.
- The attacks continued late into the evening and resumed in the morning, again targeting Nikopol and Marhanets.
Vinnytsia region
It has been reported that eight defenders from Vinnytsia region have been killed. They are: Oleksandr Hnatyuk, Vasyl Soima, Vitalii Popovych, Denys Kushil, Ruslan Shyndyruk, Volodymyr Dovbnia, Volodymyr Hupaliuk, and Vasyl Pugach.
Kirovohrad oblast
In the Novoukrainka district of Kirovohrad region, 29 internally displaced persons from Donetsk were evacuated by bus. They were settled in five communities within the district, with food and essential supplies provided for them. This was reported by Kateryna Koltunova, Deputy Head of the Regional Military Administration.
Poltava oblast
In Poltava, rescuers continue to extinguish a large fire at an enterprise caused by a massive Russian attack on the night of August 18–19. The response involved, among other resources, two fire trains.
Three rescuers sustained burn injuries while fighting the fire in Kremenchuk, which broke out during Russian missile and strike UAV attacks on the city that night.
Compensation will be provided to 20 residents of the Poltava community for housing damaged due to shelling or hostilities, totaling nearly three million hryvnias.
In Kremenchuk, a farewell ceremony will be held for soldier Volodymyr Moskvin, who was killed on August 6, 2025, during a combat mission.
State awards were presented to the families of four servicemen: Volodymyr Ulizka, Ivan Sushka, Dmytro Prokopenko, and Vitalii Khionin. All four lived in Poltava region.
Cherkasy oblast
In Cherkasy, a farewell ceremony was held for Maksym Huseynov, who was killed on July 29, 2025, in Zaporizhzhia region.
In Uman, residents bid farewell to 22-year-old defender Maksym Nemirovskyi, who had been missing for over a year. He died in combat in Luhansk region on July 27, 2024.
A police officer from Cherkasy region, Oleksandr Rozdorozhnyi, also died in the war. He joined the rifle battalion of the Cherkasy Regional Police in July 2024. Oleksandr was killed on August 17, 2025, in Donetsk region while carrying out a combat mission. He was 38 years old.

Zaporizhzhia oblast
Today, 20 August, the russian army attacked a private house in the frontline town of Huliaipole. A woman was injured as a result of the shelling.
Yesterday, 19 August, the occupiers carried out 583 strikes on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched 8 airstrikes on Prymorske, Huliaipole, Malynivka, and Poltavka. Two MLRS attacks hit Novodanilivka and Mala Tokmachka. 412 UAVs of various types (mostly FPV) attacked Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Preobrazhenka, Novodanilivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. There were 161 artillery strikes on Kamianske, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Shcherbaky, Preobrazhenka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. 27 reports were received about destroying apartments, houses, outbuildings, and infrastructure facilities.
According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 20 August, Ukrainian defenders repelled one enemy attack near Prymorske towards Orikhiv.
According to Berdiansk City Military Administration, starting 1 September, 2025, the occupiers are introducing a course of propaganda lectures in kindergartens of the occupied Berdiansk. The main goal of these courses is to instill “love for russia” and “respect for russian culture.”
Mykolaiv oblast
Yesterday, 19 August, at 13:22, the enemy carried out artillery shelling of Kutsurub community. A residential building was damaged and a fire broke out on a household plot in the village of Dmytrivka.
At night, on 20 August, at 02:42, the enemy carried out shelling with MLRS on Pervomaisk settlement community. As a result of the attack, a fire broke out in an open area. There are no casualties.
Odesa oblast
At night, the enemy attacked Odesa oblast with strike drones. Infrastructure facilities and production buildings were damaged in Izmail. Fires broke out at the site, but the firefighters quickly extinguished them. One man was reported injured.
According to the “South” Air Command, air defense forces shot down more than 20 drones.
Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger visited Odesa on 20 August. This was her third visit to Ukraine since her appointment in March. In her speech in Odesa, Meinl-Reisinger emphasized that Austria is ready to take part in Ukraine’s reconstruction. According to her, more than 200 Austrian entrepreneurs are already working in Ukraine, and about a thousand more plan to expand their business.
Kherson oblast
Today, around noon, russian occupiers shelled a residential building in Bilozerka with artillery. One person was killed and another was injured in the attack.
At about 06:30, russian forces struck Bilozerka with artillery again. A woman born in 1955 sustained a blast injury and abdominal wounds.
Around 5:30, russian troops attacked a car with a drone in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, injuring a 64-year-old man.
Yesterday, the russian forces shelled Antonivka, Beryslav, Biliaivka, Bilozerka, Burhunka, Veletenske, Vesele, Virivka, Havrylivka, Daryivka, Dniprovske, Doslidne, Dudchany, Zelenivka, Zolota Balka, Zorivka, Inzhenerne, Kachkarivka, Kizomys, Kozatske, Mykhailivka, Molodizhne, Monastyrske, Mykilske, Novokairy, Novoraisk, Odradokamianka, Oleksandrivka, Olhivka, Prydniprovske, Rozlyv, Romashkove, Sadove, Sofiivka, Stanislav, Tomyna Balka, Chervonyi Mayak, Chornobaivka, Shyroka Balka, Shliakhove, Yantarne, and the city of Kherson. Two apartment buildings, ten private houses, a gas station, a private garage, and a car were damaged. One person was killed and three others injured, including a child, due to russian aggression.

Zakarpattia oblast
A ceremony to award servicemen of the Chop border service division who returned after completing combat missions in eastern Ukraine was held in the city of Uzhhorod. The Border Guard Service Division Chop has been performing combat missions in Donetsk, Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts since 2022. Border guards participated in both defensive battles and assault operations, destroying enemy manpower and equipment. Throughout the entire period of the full-scale invasion, 77 servicemen of this unit were awarded state decorations, 15 of them posthumously.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Preparatory work has begun on the territory of Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Clinical Hospital for the construction of a modern multidisciplinary rehabilitation center worth over UAH 1.2bn. The project involves the creation of a complex with rehabilitation halls, a hotel for families, and a shelter for 350 people.
Lviv oblast
During the United by Reading book fair, residents of Sheptytska community raised over UAH 6,000 for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These funds were donated to purchase components for FPV drones.
Rivne oblast
7 school shelters are being built simultaneously in Rivne oblast. The locations where the shelters are being built were determined thanks to the DREAM digital ecosystem, which also became a tool for distributing subsidies for school shelters.
Ternopil oblast
Communities in Ternopil oblast received school buses equipped for transporting children with disabilities thanks to the cooperation between the Government of Ukraine and the EU within the framework of the implementation of the Ukraine Facility project.
18 defenders from Ternopil will receive a one-time grant of UAH 15,000 for treatment and rehabilitation. Since the beginning of 2025, 398 Ternopil soldiers have already received such financial assistance, and during 2024 – 295 servicemen.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
At night, during an air alert signal, one enemy UAV was lost in the oblast. There were no injuries, deaths or damage.
Chernivtsi oblast
The RMA reported that the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was awarded to soldier Yurii Spivak.
