What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

On 19 January, National Guard Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko announced that National Guard troops had taken the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the exclusion zone under enhanced security. In order to protect the territory more effectively, closer cooperation with the Defence Forces is being established and the use of drones is being increased.

The most difficult situation in the country with regard to electricity supply is observed in Kyiv and the surrounding oblast, in particular in Bila Tserkva, Vasylkiv, and Boryspil. This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a special conference call dedicated to stabilising the energy system after the latest russian strikes. Additional repair crews from other regions, as well as specialists from Ukrzaliznytsia and other state-owned companies, have been brought in to help the capital region.

On the evening of 18 January, Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that utility workers in Kyiv are continuing to work to restore heat to buildings that were left without heat after the attack on the capital on 9 January. Of the 6,000 buildings, heat is currently being restored to 32 high-rise buildings, where the work is most difficult. The majority of these buildings are located in the Holosiivskyi district.

The first part of the aid from Czech partners – the Central Bohemian Region – has arrived in Kyiv oblast. Sixty EcoFlow devices will be delivered to the resilience centres, which are being restocked to increase their autonomy. Under a memorandum of cooperation signed in July last year, regional council deputies allocated €220,000 to support the Kyiv region. Purchases are being made by the Czech organisation Team 4 Ukraine.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the Albanian Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs visited the Kyiv Medical Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. During the visit, the foreign delegation familiarised themselves with the work of the medical system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, which, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion by the russian federation, has been continuously providing treatment, rehabilitation and social support to military personnel and employees of the system.

Recently, the Kyiv City Council supported the decision to rename Mykhailo Kotelnikov Street in honour of Daria ‘Delta’ Lopatina, a 19-year-old soldier of the 12th Special Forces Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine ‘Azov’. The corresponding petition gathered the necessary 6,009 signatures. Daria Lopatina was a Kyiv resident and served as an electronic warfare systems engineer in the radio-electronic warfare platoon of the 1st Battalion. She joined the army at the age of 18. During her service, she destroyed a significant number of enemy drones, providing cover for infantry, medics and evacuation teams.

Zhytomyr oblast

У житомирській 95-й окремій десантно-штурмовій Поліській бригаді Десантно-штурмових військ Збройних сил України повідомили про нагородження понад 40 військовослужбовців артилерійських та ракетних підрозділів. Відзнаки отримали найрезультативніші бійці підрозділів.

В одному з ресторанів міста Малин на період холодів та обмеженої подачі електроенергії 16 січня запрацював Пункт турботи. У просторі безкоштовно пригощають чаєм, відвідувачі можуть зарядити мобільні телефони та в окремій залі попрацювати з ноутбуком. 

Sumy oblast

Oleh Hryhorov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that in the first weeks of the year, more than 150 enemy UAVs were destroyed over Sumy oblast. Some of the drones lost control and failed to reach their targets. As a result, a significant number of attacks caused no harm to people or civilian infrastructure.

The Regional Military Administration informed that as of the morning of 19 January, two enemy UAV strikes were recorded in Sumy. In Zarichnyi District, an apartment in a multi-storey residential building was damaged. In Kovpakivskyi District, a strike on a civilian infrastructure facility damaged a building and civilian vehicles parked nearby.

According to  Artem Kobzar, the Acting Mayor of Sumy, a Molniya-type UAV struck Zarichnyi District at around 5am, while a Lancet-type UAV hit Kovpakivskyi District at around 6am. The roof of a building and six vehicles were damaged. One of the damaged apartments in Zarichnyi District is occupied by a woman who had previously evacuated from Krasnopilia community due to shelling.

In Sumy, trolleybus services were suspended and most facilities of the municipal enterprise “Miskvodokanal” were left without power due to disruptions in electricity supply. Energy workers are addressing the issue, the enterprise reported. Facilities of Sumy water utility have been switched to emergency backup power.

Shostka Mayor Mykola Noha said that overnight, russian forces struck Shostka community by UAVs. An infrastructure facility was damaged as a result of the attack. Emergency response and restoration works are ongoing.

Over the past 24 hours, from the morning of 18 January to the morning of 19 January, russian forces carried out nearly 80 attacks on 33 settlements across 15 communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used artillery, mortars, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Over the day, air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 21 hours and 33 minutes.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged or destroyed as follows:

  • In Hlukhiv community, private passenger vehicles and a private household were damaged;
  • In Berezivka community, a non-residential building was damaged;
  • In Yampil community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • In Sumy community, an apartment building, a non-residential building, civilian infrastructure facilities, and passenger vehicles were damaged;
  • In Mykolaivka rural community, a private vehicle was destroyed;
  • In Richky community, private residential houses and a passenger vehicle were damaged;
  • In Shostka community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.

Over the 24-hour period, 28 people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and civil society organisations.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that over the past day, 18 January, border guards destroyed nearly four dozen russian UAVs over Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. Among the targets destroyed in the northern direction were four Shahed attack UAVs, one Molniya UAV, one Zala UAV, and 33 FPV drones.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that over the past week, defenders destroyed 222 attack drones over Chernihiv oblast.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional State Administration, informed that on the morning of 19 January, russian forces again attacked Semenivka. Civilian infrastructure in the city came under fire. According to him, at least three attacks using Heran and Molniya-type attack UAVs were recorded in the city during the first half of the day.

According to Chernihivoblenergo, overnight on 19 January, russian forces damaged five critical energy facilities in Chernihiv oblast. As a result, tens of thousands of consumers were left without electricity, the company. Energy workers are carrying out restoration works.

Pavlo Miroshnychenko, Head of Koriukivka Regional State Administration, reported that starting from the evening of 18 January, russian forces attacked critical infrastructure in Koriukivka region by attack drones. As of the morning of 19 January, four strikes were recorded. russian forces attacked Snovsk, Koriukivka, Kholmy, and Mensk communities. Civilian houses were damaged. Most settlements in the region were left without electricity. The communities are operating on alternative power sources.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that over the course of 18 January, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (four explosions) and multiple launch rocket system strikes (30 explosions), attacked with Molniya-type UAVs (one explosion), Shahed-type UAVs (one explosion), FPV drones (16 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (three explosions). The towns of Semenivka and Snovsk, as well as 12 villages, came under fire.

According to Chernihiv Regional Blood Centre, throughout 2025, Chernihiv Regional Blood Centre carried out around 130 mobile blood collection visits. As a result, more than 50% of all blood collected during the year was obtained through these visits. The visits were conducted both to various organisations and institutions in Chernihiv city and to communities across the oblast.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Nikopol region. During the night, the enemy shelled Pokrovske community by artillery.

Synelnykove region. The essian forces struck Mykolaivka, Vasylkivka, Illarionove and Raivka communities by UAVs. A fire broke out, and a non-operational building, vehicles, a gas pipeline and infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Air defence units destroyed 8 enemy UAVs.

Nikopol region. In Nikopol city, 5 people were injured: 2 men aged 41 and 49, and 3 women aged 88, 28 and 59. During the day, russian forces continuously shelled the regional centre, Pokrovske, Marhanets, Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities by artillery and drones. Fires were reported. 13 apartment buildings, a summer kitchen, around 15 private houses, 2 outbuildings, 8 vehicles, enterprises, administrative buildings, 5 shops, a museum, a medical facility, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Synelnykove region. The enemy carried out a missile strike and attacked by UAVs, targeting Vasylkivka and Petropavlivka communities. A 22-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man were injured. Infrastructure facilities were damaged. A fire broke out in a private house. 6 private houses, a garage, 2 outbuildings and 2 vehicles were damaged.

During the day, air defence forces shot down six enemy UAVs over the region.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Today, 19 January, the russian army attacked Zaporizhzhia with drones. The city council reported that windows, doors, and roofs were damaged in at least 12 private houses. A fire broke out near the site of the attack. Two women suffered acute stress reactions.

According to Kushuhum town council, today at 15:30 russian military forces attacked the administrative building of the council with an FPV drone.

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 18 January, the occupiers carried out 684 strikes on 34 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces conducted 19 airstrikes on Rizdvianka, Tavriiske, Zirnytsia, Zhovta Krucha, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Verkhna Tersa, Vozdvyzhivka, Dolynka, Huliaipilske, and Svoboda. 424 drones of various types, mostly FPV, attacked Vilniansk, Nizhynka, Ukrainka, Mykhailo-Lukasheve, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Sviatopetrivka, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, and Solodke. Six MLRS strikes were carried out on Zaporizhzhia, Zaliznychne, Novoandriivka, Charivne, Tsvitkove, and Nove Zaporizhzhia. 235 artillery strikes hit Chervonodniprovka, Stepnohirsk, Stepove, Lukianivske, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, and Solodke. Forty-three reports of damage to housing and infrastructure facilities were received. Three people were wounded as a result of enemy attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Vilniansk.

According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 19 January, since the beginning of the day Ukrainian defenders repelled 16 russian attacks in the areas of Huliaipole, Solodke, Dobropillia, Varvarivka, and Sviatopetrivka towards Huliaipole. Over the past day, 18 January, the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 21 russian attacks towards Huliaipole direction and two attacks towards Orikhiv.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that on the night of 19 January, seven Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs and various types of decoy drones were shot down or suppressed in Mykolaiv oblast. Also, yesterday, the enemy attacked Ochakiv community twice with FPV drones. There were no casualties.

Odesa oblast

At night of 19 January, russian forces attacked Odesa oblast with strike drones. A drone hit a multi-story residential building in Odesa region. Private houses, as well as energy, gas, and civilian infrastructure, were also damaged. One person was injured.

DTEK’s press service reported that as a result of the nighttime shelling on 19 January, a DTEK energy facility in Odesa sustained significant damage. Currently, 30.8 thousand households are without electricity. The destruction is severe, and restoring the equipment to operational condition will take a long time.

The press service of the Southern Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that on the night of 19 January, servicemen of Odesa Border Guard Detachment struck four attack UAVs in southern Ukraine. These were Shahed-131/136 type drones.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that an elderly woman was taken to hospital after being injured this morning as a result of a russian shelling of Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. Preliminary reports indicate that the 70-year-old resident sustained a blast injury.

Medical assistance was also required today for three women who were injured as a result of russian shelling of Bilozerka on 15 January. The injured were diagnosed with blast injuries and concussions.

Police of Kherson oblast reported that yesterday, 18 January, the russian forces attacked Kherson, Antonivka, Dniprovske, Prydniprovske, Sadove, Sofiivka, Kizomys, Stanislav, Shyroka Balka, Pryozerne, Molodizhne, Yantarne, Veletenske, Beryslav, Odradokamianka, Olhivka, Lvivske, Mykolaivka, Kozatske, and Vesele. A private house, a school building, a medical facility infrastructure, and five vehicles were damaged. Two people were injured as a result of russian aggression.

According to Police of Kherson oblast, russian forces remotely mined the territory of a medical facility in central Kherson with PFM-1S anti-personnel mines. Law enforcement officers discovered five mines, and explosives specialists destroyed the dangerous “petals” using a controlled explosion.

Head of the Regional Military Administration Oleksandr Prokudin reported that over the course of a week, Ukrainian fighters destroyed 2,341 drones used by russian forces to attack the right bank of Kherson oblast. In total, russian troops launched 2,509 drones at the right bank over the week.

Starting 20 January, new requirements for crossing the border for children under 14 will come into force in russia. From now on, possession of a russian foreign passport will be mandatory. The new rules were also extended to temporarily occupied territories, including Crimea. Researcher with the Crimean Human Rights Group, Iryna Siedova, explained that the new border-crossing rules make it impossible for residents of temporarily occupied territories to take children out of those areas. In this way, russia is forcing people to obtain documents for children, including foreign passports issued by the occupation authorities.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The military received an A8 HIGH electronic warfare system, 2 Delta-Tec Loli electronic warfare systems, a DJI Matrice 30T, 2 DJI Matrice 4T, 8 DJI Mavic 3 PRO, 20 FPV drones, 7 Starlink, 18 charging stations, 5 tablets, 3 antennas and an MT-BNV-PRO-40G2 binocular from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

Zakarpattia oblast sent the 1st group of children abroad for recuperation in 2026. 205 children of servicemen and fallen soldiers will rest in the Hungarian city of Szatárolyi until 23 January inclusive.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

This week, 30 children from military families from Zabolotivska, Solotvyna and Kalusa communities will rest in the neighboring country. In total, the Hungarian side is hosting 205 schoolchildren from 11 oblasts of Ukraine – children of military personnel and fallen Heroes, for whom it is especially important to feel care and support today.

Lviv oblast

The Norwegian city of Bergen became the 33rd sister city of Lviv. The cooperation agreement was signed at the City Hall.

An event for children was held in Lviv as part of the Childhood Ambassador project. The event brought together about 2,000 participants (children, their families, organizers, volunteers and partners) around a common goal – to give children a sense of care, security and joy.

A meeting dedicated to the Veteran Space was held at the Caritas Lviv social center – a place where veterans, military personnel and their families can find support, understanding and professional assistance.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast helps the capital. The 1st team of our specialists went to Kyiv to help restore heat supply. These are employees of the Rivneteploenerho LLC who volunteered to go. The oblast provided generators for the needs of Kyiv residents.

Ternopil oblast

An adaptive crossfit competition was held in Ternopil at the Center for Support of Veterans and Families of Heroes. 20 veterans, including people with disabilities as a result of the war, participated in the event.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community has allocated financial support for public and volunteer organizations. The total amount of support is UAH 3.8m.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Oleh Shemchuk, Commander of the Regional Directorate of the Territorial Defense Forces West, Colonel, and Colonel Serhii Arushanian, Head of the Chernivtsi Regional Territorial Center for Recruiting and Social Support. They discussed the issue of strengthening support for the Defense Forces, in particular the 107th Territorial Defense Brigade. Special attention was paid to the issues of forming new units, mobilization and recruitment work .

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Britain will allocate 20m pounds to Ukraine. The funds will go towards repairs, restoration, protection and energy production to ensure electricity and heat supply to homes, hospitals and schools in difficult winter conditions.
