The situation on the front line remains difficult. The Ukrainian Defense Forces are directing their efforts to disrupt the offensive plans of the russian aggressor and destroy its personnel and equipment.
On 16 January, there were 89 clashes on the frontline. The largest number of battles were recorded in the Pokrovsky and Kursky directions.
The communities of Tymofiivka in Kharkiv oblast; Karpovychi, Liskivshchyna, Kovpynka in Chernihiv oblast; Popivka, Bila Bereza in Sumy oblast were affected by enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy stormed the positions of our units in the Petropavlivka and Pishchane areas three times.
Towards Lyman, the invading army carried out nine attacks on Ukrainian positions near the settlements of Kopanky, Novoserhiivka, Hrekivka, Novoplatonivka, Terny and Zarichne. Three clashes are still ongoing.
Towards Siversk, the Defense Forces units repelled three attacks by russian invaders, one clash is currently ongoing. The enemy attacked Ukrainian defensive positions near Verkhnokamianske and Ivano-Dariivka. Siversk came under enemy air strikes.

The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 30 enemy attacks, one clash is still ongoing.
Towards Novopavlivka, the invaders have attacked ten times near Konstantinopol, Velyka Novosilka and Vremivka. Three attacks by the invaders were repelled. The fighting continues. The enemy bombed Novopil and Konstantinopol with GABs.
Towards Orikhiv, the occupation forces carried out one assault on the positions of Ukrainian troops near Novodanylivka.
Towards Kherson, the enemy unsuccessfully tried to storm Ukrainian positions.
The operation is ongoing in Kursk oblast. Ukrainian soldiers repelled eight attacks by the invading forces, and three clashes are currently ongoing. The enemy launched 250 artillery strikes, including one from a multiple launch rocket system.
The enemy did not conduct any active operations in towards Kharkiv and Huliaipole.
Dmytro Lubinets says that Ukraine calls on russia to allow representatives of the Red Cross to all Ukrainian prisoners. The need to create mixed medical commissions was also discussed, which would determine the priority of the exchange of prisoners based on their health.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation, informs that in Diia a new program for veterans “Veteran Sports” was launched. This program provides for the opportunity to receive UAH 1,500 quarterly for sports.

Attacks
At 12:40pm, russian troops shelled Ivashky village of Zolochiv community with a tank. A private house was damaged and the power grid was partially damaged. There were no casualties. At the same time, the occupiers are using UAVs to remotely mine the territory of the settlement.

A hit by an enemy UAV was recorded in Kharkiv. Two men and a woman are hospitalised as a result of a UAV strike in Sloboda region of Kharkiv. Several civilian vehicles and the road surface were damaged. According to preliminary data, the enemy struck with a Molniya UAV.
Yesterday at 9:01pm, the russian army attacked Lyman village of Chuhuiv region. The wreckage of the downed Shahed UAV fell on an open area, damaging a house and an outbuilding.
At 11:50am, Piatyhirske village, outside the settlement, was under russian attack. The wreckage of a downed missile, preliminary X-59, was found in the field.
At 11am, Kupiansk was under russian army attack. A 73-year-old man was injured as a result of a strike by a Molniya UAV.
At 10:50am, Balakliia community of Izium region was attacked. between the settlements, the wreckage of a downed missile, preliminary X-59, was found in the field.
At 9am, the russian army attacked in Berestyn region. The enemy shelling of the open territory was recorded, no casualties.
At 8:50am, Kupiansk was shelled. As a result of an FPV drone strike, the windows of a 9-storey residential building were damaged.
Other
As a result of increased evacuation measures, 50 people have been evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions.
Yevhen Koliada, Head of the Humanitarian Coordination Centre, reported that a settlement and information system that will help optimise evacuation will be presented in Kharkiv oblast in February. This should help to solve one of the two main problems of the evacuation – the lack of information about where the evacuees will go, what they will do there and who will support them in the evacuation.
Donetsk oblast
Frontline
The 10th mountain assault brigade Edelweiss reported that Ukrainian troops repelled five mechanised assaults by the russian army near Siversk. The defence forces destroyed more than 50 occupiers and 39 motorcycles, and captured one of the russian military.
The occupiers have reduced the number of attacks near Chasiv Yar towards Kramatorsk. Yesterday russian troops attacked Ukrainian positions six times near the city and near Stupochky and Predtechyne villages, while the day before there were 14 attacks.
Most of the attacks were repelled by the Defence Forces towards Pokrovsk, where the russian army tried to advance 56 times, in particular, near Baranivka, Myroliubivka, Promin, Shevchenko, Udachne, Kotlynove, Petropavlivka, Stari Terny, Yantarne, Yelyzavetivka, Uspenivka, Andriivka and Dachne.
The occupation forces attacked 16 more times towards Lyman near Kopanky, Novoserhiivka, Tverdokhlibove, Makiivka, Kolodiazy, Terny and Hryhorivka.
Shelling
Serhii Horbunov, Head of the CMA, reported that on the morning of 16 January, the russian army shelled the Kostiantynivka community. The strike damaged six houses, a power line and a gas pipeline.
Around midnight, Myrnohrad came under enemy attack, damaging a private house. Yesterday police recorded 3,136 hostile attacks on the frontline and residential areas. Also russian troops shelled 15 settlements. 65 civilian objects were damaged, including 23 residential buildings.

Russians dropped an UMPB D30-SN bomb on Kramatorsk, injuring 10 residents, including two children, aged 6 and 16, and eight women aged 47-73. 30 objects were damaged: 7 apartment buildings, a pharmacy, a shop, an educational institution, a sports club, 19 civilian cars.
The enemy struck Stinky village with a FAB-250 bomb – a civilian was injured and 2 private houses were damaged.
Russia shelled Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka with Tornado-S MLRS – one civilian was wounded and a private house was damaged.
The occupiers sent 2 FAB-250 bombs to Chernihivka – one person was wounded, an apartment building and a business were damaged.
Two people were wounded in Konstantinopil as a result of a russian drone strike.
Russian troops attacked Pokrovsk with a FAB-250 bomb and drones, damaging a private house, 2 garages, 2 administrative buildings, a bus, and a car.
In Kostiantynivka, shelling damaged 2 private houses and a power line, in Lyman and Popasna – one private house each, in Drobysheve – 5 private houses and an outbuilding.
In Shevchenko village, an educational institution was damaged by FAB-250 bombs, and in Serhiivka – 2 apartment buildings, 3 shops, 2 administrative buildings, 2 civilian cars.

Yurii Bolokhovets, Director of the State Enterprise Forests of Ukraine, reported that wild animals such as deer, elk, wolves, foxes and raccoon dogs are migrating from the combat zone in Donetsk oblast to Dnipropetrovsk.
Other
Theatre in the UK is to perform Mariupol Drama. The play, based on the memoirs of actors who survived a russian air strike on a theatre in Mariupol on 16 March 2022, will be performed eight times.
Luhansk oblast
The RMA reported that yesterday the enemy focused towards Lyman, where they stormed in the areas of Tverdokhlibove and Makiivka. The invaders fired four times from artillery systems in this area of the frontline. They used mostly unmanned aerial vehicles. The enemy sent 132 UAVs towards the fortifications of Ukrainian defenders.
The need for public transport drivers in the so-called “lpr” is growing daily. In general, in the occupied territory of the region, depending on the settlement, there is a shortage of 50 to 70 per cent of drivers. Men do not leave because they know the fate of those who worked in these places before. In 2024 alone, the number of vehicles engaged in passenger transportation in the “lpr” decreased by 20% due to the forced mobilisation of drivers.
The village of Bile, located between Luhansk and Alchevsk, does not have a pharmacy. There is no specialist with a medical degree who can dispense medicines in the village. There are no russians or university graduates in Luhansk willing to move to the countryside, even if there are incentive payments from the state budget. By the way, the post office there is also closed.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Timur Tkachenko, Head of Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that the wreckage of a downed russian drone in the capital damaged a car in Solomianskyi district and the facade of a house in Dniprovskyi district. The fall of debris was also recorded in Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi and Pecherskyi districts. Mykola Kalashnyk, the head of the Regional Military Administration, said that russian drones attacked Kyiv oblast once again at night. Air defence systems destroyed all enemy targets. There were no civilian casualties. There were no hits to critical or residential infrastructure.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit. Starmer is expected to discuss the security guarantees which the UK can offer Kyiv, including the possibility of British troops participating in a post-war peacekeeping force. Ukraine and the UK signed a historic agreement for 100 years, which will strengthen military and economic cooperation between the countries.
The Italian Embassy in Ukraine reported that Italian Defence Minister Guido Crozetto arrived in Kyiv on an official visit, during which he will hold a number of institutional meetings.
The Global Alliance for the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict (PSVI) recently held its inaugural meeting in Kyiv. This year, Ukraine chairs the alliance, which currently includes 26 states and other members, including international partners and NGOs. According to the President’s wife, Olena Zelenska, following the meeting, 648 Ukrainians who suffered sexual violence by the russian occupiers have applied for interim reparations. To date, 432 people have received these payments.
Cars that were destroyed during russian drone and missile attacks will be removed from the streets of Kyiv. The head of Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, instructed to start the process. According to him, more than a thousand abandoned cars damaged by shelling have been recorded in the capital. These cars were abandoned as a symbol of the criminal actions of a neighbouring terrorist, but at the same time, they create problems on the roads and narrow the passage for rescue vehicles.

Zhytomyr oblast
The regional military administration reported that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, employees of the State Emergency Service in Zhytomyr oblast have destroyed 4,085 explosive devices.
The Estonian Center for International Development (ESTDEV) reported that with funding from the Estonian government, three family-type orphanages for internally displaced persons have been built in Zhytomyr oblast. The cost of construction of all three is about EUR 2 million. This year, with the assistance of Estonia, two more houses will be built in the oblast.
After returning home from hot spots, servicemen and war veterans in Zhytomyr overcome the effects of stress with the help of art therapy. Since the beginning of the summer of 2024, the Rehabilitation Center for Assistance to Veterans and Their Family Members has been operating in the regional center. In six months, in addition to art therapy sessions, psychological assistance was provided here to more than 100 war veterans, 127 servicemen received legal advice.
Sumy oblast
The RMA reported that on 16 January, anti-aircraft guns shot down 4 enemy Shaheds in the sky over Sumy oblast. Since the beginning of the year, 138 russian drones have been destroyed by the oblast air defense units.
During night and morning, russians carried out 5 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 8 explosions: 4 hits by GABs and 4 hits by mortars.. The attacks targeted Myropilia, Yunalivka, Bilopillia communities.
On 15 January, russians carried out 45 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 117 explosions. According to the RMA, the attacks targeted 9 border communities.
The enemy shelled Seredyna-Buda community by artillery (22 explosions), mortars (11 explosions), FPV-drones (2 explosions), and also dropped explosive devices from UAVs (9 explosions). As a result of the shelling, a garage and a car were damaged.
The Nova Slobidka community (4 explosions), Velyka Pysarivka (23 explosions), Hlukhiv (11 mines), Bilopillia community (8 explosions), and Krasnopillia (8 mines) were under mortar fire. The enemy also attacked the territory of Krasnopillia and Velyka Pysarivka communities by FPV-drones (10 and 2 explosions, respectively).
Hlukhiv and Shalyhyne communities each suffered one hit by FPV-drones. The enemy dropped explosive devices from UAVs on the territory of Bilopillia, Znob-Novhorodske, and Khotin communities.
A child who was injured in the limbs during the russian ballistic strike on Sumy on 17 November was discharged from Okhmatdyt hospital in Kyiv. For almost 2 months, 3-year-old Sasha was in the reconstructive and plastic microsurgery department. The medical institution reported that, despite all efforts, doctors were unable to save one of the replanted fingers, but saved the others. In February 2025, little Sasha is scheduled to have reconstruction of the finger bones and the next series of operations to restore ligaments and nerves.

The first families of displaced people from Sumy oblast border region received housing in a modular town in one of the communities. A pilot project for Ukraine called “Housing Space” was implemented by UNHCR in cooperation with Sumy RMA and local authorities. In total, the town has 10 houses, designed for over 60 people and already partially inhabited. The houses are insulated, have electricity and water supply, and are equipped with furniture and appliances.
Volodymyr Artiukh, head of the RMA said that 7 rear communities visited the border Sumy oblast within the framework of the project “Side by Side: United Communities”. Key areas of support were discussed with them: assistance to IDPs, long-term reconstruction, humanitarian and material assistance. Community representatives visited 10-15 km from the front line and saw the scale of the destruction, learned about the needs of internally displaced persons and the challenges that residents of frontline communities face every day.
Chernihiv oblast
Chernihiv oblast police reported that on the evening of 15 January, russian drones attacked the territory of one of the agricultural enterprises in Pryluky region. As a result of the attack, the administrative building of the enterprise was destroyed, a hangar with agricultural machinery and a storage facility filled with more than two thousand tons of grain were damaged.
During the day on 15 January, the russian army shelled three border communities in Chernihiv oblast. The fire was carried out with mortars, artillery, and also attacked by UAVs and FPV-drones. In total, border guards recorded 51 explosions.
In the territory of Semenivka community, 19 mortar strikes, 21 artillery strikes, one FPV-drone strike, and two explosive device drops from a UAV were recorded. The villages of Bleshnia, Hremiachka, Tymonovychi, Zarichchia, Lubiane, Karpovychi, and Halahanivka were under enemy fire.
Snovsk community: 2 explosive drops from UAVs on Huta Studenetska, one FPV-drone strike on Hirsk, 4 mortar strikes towards Kliusy.
Horodnia community: one FPV-drone strike on Hasychivka.
Chernihiv border detachment informed that during the prisoner exchange on 15 January, a border guard from Chernihiv region, Vasyl Tsishkevych, returned to Ukraine. The fighter of the State Border Service “Steel Border” brigade spent the summer of 2023 in captivity in Kharkiv oblast. Then he was wounded by small arms. Currently, Vasyl is in a moderate condition and cannot move independently.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the RMA, informed that last evening, a 54-year-old woman was killed in Nikopol due to a MLRS. She was pulled from the rubble of her own house. A 45-year-old man was also injured. From yesterday evening until morning, the occupiers attacked the region about 10 times, by artillery, MLRS and drones. They targeted the regional centre, Pokrovske, Myrove and Marhanets communities. Several fires broke out as a result. A private house and a utility structure were destroyed. In total, 5 apartment buildings, 27 private houses, 16 utility structures, 6 garages, 3 trucks, 4 cars, infrastructure, gas pipelines and power lines were damaged.
During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region 4 times, by kamikaze drones and dropping munitions from UAVs. The regional centre and Marhanets community were targeted, causing damage to infrastructure.
Vinnytsia oblast
Vinnytsia paid tribute to volunteer soldier Viacheslav Hrudnytskyi, who was killed during a russian shelling in Donetsk oblast. The defender went to the front in 2022, served in airborne assault and mechanized brigades.
Poltava oblast
According to the RMA, during the night, Poltava oblast was attacked by enemy UAVs. Fragments from the drones damaged the energy infrastructure in the oblast.
In the latest exchange, Ukrainian serviceman Dmytro Batiuk from Zinkiv returned home after being held in russian captivity for almost 3 years.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, reported that during the night, Ukrainian defenders shot down a russian UAV in Cherkasy oblast.

Zaporizhzhia oblast
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of the evening of 16 January, the Defence Forces in Orikhiv region repelled a russian attack near Novodanylivka.
By the morning, 4 russian attacks had been repelled by the Defence Forces in Orikhiv region, particularly in the areas of Mala Tokmachka, Shcherbaky and Novoandriivka.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 15 January, russian forces launched 418 strikes on 11 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. These included 19 attacks by MLRS targeting Novoiakovlivka, Zhovta Krucha, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka and Novodarivka.
According to the RMA, a social taxi service for people with disabilities caused by the war began operating in Zaporizhzhia on 15 January.
Referring to the CMA, starting in January 2025, residents of occupied Berdiansk who do not obtain russian passports will no longer be able to find employment.
Based on the information provided by the Yellow Ribbon resistance movement, in temporarily occupied Enerhodar, the occupation authorities are forcing schoolchildren to begin celebrating “9 May” as early as January by making posters about “victory”, shouting the slogan “We can do it again”, and singing the russian and Soviet anthems.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to the RMA, on the night of 16 January, air defence forces destroyed 5 Shahed-131/136 drones over Mykolaiv oblast.
Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv RMA, said that on 15 January, russian forces attacked Kutsurub community twice by FPV drones. In Dmytrivka village, 2 private houses, a car and a gas pipeline were damaged. There were no casualties reported. Ochakiv community also came under FPV drone attacks twice.
Odesa oblast
Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am, no russian ships are present in the Black or Azov Seas. In the Mediterranean Sea, 7 russian ships were observed, including 2 equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo capacity of up to 22 missiles.
Kherson oblast
The State Emergency Service reported that a house caught fire in Beryslav region due to a russian drone attack. Despite repeated threats of strikes, firefighters extinguished the fire.
According to the RMA, during the night, russian forces shelled Novodmytrivka and Tomyna Balka, damaging a dormitory and at least 5 residential buildings. There were no casualties reported.
Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, stated that in Korabelnyi district of Kherson, a 54-year-old man was injured after stepping on an unidentified explosive device. Preliminary reports indicate he sustained a mine-blast injury.
In Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on a public bus (marshrutka). The explosion occurred near the bus, which was empty at the time. The windshield, rear window and emergency exit doors were damaged.
Kherson CMA reported that russian forces attacked municipal workers in Dniprovskyi district, dropping explosives from a drone onto a garbage truck belonging to ME Kherson Parks. There were no workers injured.
According to the SES, firefighters in Kherson extinguished a car fire caused by a russian drone attack. Occupiers dropped explosives on a moving vehicle, setting it ablaze.
The RMA reported that in Kindiika, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on the morning of 16 January, injuring a 62-year-old man who sustained blast injuries and leg wounds. In Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, a 68-year-old woman was injured in another drone attack, sustaining a blast injury.
The russian forces shelled Yantarne, injuring a 92-year-old woman who suffered a blast injury and concussion. Her condition is assessed as moderate.
Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, stated that at around 6am, russian forces shelled Antonivka near Kherson, injuring a 77-year-old woman who was hospitalised with a mine-blast injury and shrapnel wounds.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that at midnight, russian forces attacked Antonivka by drones, killing a 37-year-old man and injuring a 33-year-old man. Also, a 53-year-old man injured in a drone attack in Kherson on 15 January succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
A 31-year-old woman injured in the shelling of Bilozirka on 14 January sought medical attention on 16 January. She was diagnosed with a blast injury, concussion and brain trauma and was hospitalised.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
Volyn oblast
On 15 January, Ukraine returned 25 soldiers from captivity, including, Vitalii Voitovych and Yurii Tsaritsyn from Volyn.
Zakarpattia oblast
The Respect public organization organized an action on Sandor Petofi Square, where caring residents of the city gathered to pay tribute to the fallen Ukrainian soldiers. Organizers sought to draw attention to the importance of this initiative and called on citizens (both pedestrians and drivers) not to remain aloof from the daily minute of silence. According to the statement of the organizers, similar actions in Uzhhorod will be held regularly, twice a week.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Ecoflow charging stations were donated to four large families of fallen Heroes and those considered missing. In particular, to the relatives of Mykola Nagornyak, Oleksandr Kotsiumakha, Serhiy Mandzybura, and Anatoliy Shchupak. These devices will allow homes to be powered during power outages so that there is light and warmth.
Representatives of the RMA met with IDPs who left their homes due to the war and currently live in Nadvirna region. Today, there are about 17,000 of them. They discussed issues related to employment, provision of social housing and medical care.
Lviv oblast
The RMA held a meeting with Adriano Roccucci, Vice-President of the Community of Sant’Egidio, and Yurii Lifanse, Coordinator of the Community of Sant’Egidio in Ukraine. The topic was support for Ukraine.
Another 25 Ukrainians returned from russian captivity. Among them is 26-year-old Oleh Khomych from Lopatynska community, Sheptytskyi region. The soldier served in the Marine Corps. In July 2023, during the battle for Staromaiorske, Volnovakha region, he was seriously wounded and taken prisoner.
Combatant Olena Dats from among the IDPs, and war veteran Oleh Lytvynuk, who received disability group II as a result of the war, from Drohobych region, received certificates for the purchase of housing. The total amount of funds for the purchase of housing is UAH 4,703m.
Rivne oblast
Training on national resistance is being rolled out in Rivne oblast. The Defense of Ukraine school subject is being transformed, basic military training will be introduced at one of the universities of Rivne oblast from 1 September, 2025, and the work of the Center for Training the Population for National Resistance is being organized.
Ternopil oblast
Ternopil community transferred 40 FPV attack drones to the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade thanks to the budget funds.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
5 centers for studying the Defense of Ukraine subject appeared in Khmelnytskyi. They purchased first-aid kits, turnstiles, rifles, an interactive laser shooting range, mine models, dosimeters, and radio stations. Over UAH 8.5m were allocated from the state budget for the arrangement of locations. Almost another UAH 3.5m were allocated from the community budget.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Rustem Umerov, Defense Minister of Ukraine, announced that in 2025, Norway plans to allocate the largest military assistance to Ukraine in its history – over €2bn.
Japan has tightened sanctions against the russian federation and its allies. Sanctions have been expanded in accordance with the law on foreign exchange and foreign trade. The country has added 33 organizations and 12 individuals, including one North Korean citizen, to the list of entities subject to asset freezes.
The Biden administration, days before the end of its term, used a 2017 law to make it harder for successors to lift key sanctions against russia. The US Congress was given the power to block any attempt to lift the restrictions. In addition, the implementation of secondary sanctions is now mandatory.
Ukraine and Great Britain have signed a 100-year partnership agreement. The agreement was signed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian President, and Keir Starmer, British Prime Minister, who arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit the day before. The document will promote military cooperation between the countries in maritime security through a new structure to strengthen security in the Baltic, Black and Azov seas and deter ongoing russian aggression.
