War in Ukraine today: latest news, 15 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 843th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The aggressor continues to use aviation and attack in several directions, most actively in Pokrovsk, which accounts for more than a third of the enemy’s assault operations. Ukrainian defenders are firmly holding the line. 

On 15 June, the total number of enemy attacks was 74.

Towards Kharkiv, the occupiers continue to attack in the vicinity of Vovchansk. Currently, the enemy is trying to make three attempts to improve its own positions, the previous three were repelled. In the vicinity of Liptsy, aircraft operating from the territory of the belgorod oblast (russia) were used.

Towards Kupiansk, the occupiers increased activity in the vicinity of Petropavlivka and Hrekivka. The total number of attacks was nine. Fighting continues in the voconity of Rozdolivka towards Siversk.

Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy used aviation, carrying out strikes in the vicinity of Andriivka, Klishchiivka and Niu-York. 

Towards Pokrovsk, clashes of varying intensity took place 29 times. Currently, nine of them are ongoing, namely in the vicinity of Novooleksandrivka, Yevhenivka, Sokil, Novoselivka Persha and Nevelske. Enemy aircraft were used in the vicinity of Ptyche and Novoselivka, before that, during the day, in the vicinity of Novohorodivka, Oleksandropol, Myrne, Zhelanne, Yevhenivka, Novoselivka Persha and Karlivka.

Towards Kurakhove, the enemy tried to break through Ukrainian borders ten times during the day, three attempts are still underway in the vicinity of Heorhiivka and Paraskoviivka. According to preliminary information, the occupiers lost 54 people in this direction, one armoured personnel carrier and one ammunition depot were destroyed.

Towards Vremivka, the number of enemy attacks during the day increased to 10. All were unsuccessful. 

In other areas, the situation has not changed significantly.

The defense forces of Ukraine continue to repel the enemy and inflict maximum losses on the entire front line.


Mykola Kuleba, Head of the Save Ukraine organization, announces that 14 Ukrainian children returned home from russia and the occupied territories. Among these survivors are two deprived of parental care. 

Suspilne correspondents report that the President of Ukraine arrived in Switzerland for the Peace Summit. The Summit is attended by representatives of 92 countries, of which 57 represented at the level of leaders.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported at 7pm that russian troops are attacking near Vovchansk as the invaders are trying to make three attempts to improve their positions, the previous three attempts were repelled by the Defence Forces. Also russia used aircraft near Lyptsi. According to the General Staff, the total number of attacks towards Kupiansk today is 9.

Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office informed that a 55-year-old man was injured as a result of shelling in Kurylivka, Kupiansk region, around 11am on 15 June. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, residential buildings and outbuildings were damaged. Preliminary, the russian federation hit the settlement by multiple rocket launchers.

Animal rights activists and the police continue to evacuate pets and domestic animals that remain in the frontline villages in the north of Kharkiv oblast. Robert Sarhsian, an animal rights activist, said that everyone is being taken away, from cats to cows. Some locals have been collecting abandoned animals for two years of fighting, and now Robert is taking the animals from these improvised shelters.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, said that yesterday there were no hits on Kharkiv.

Yesterday on 14 June, at 4:20pm, Kutuzivka village of Vilkhivka community was shelled, the invaders launched at least 5 enemy KAB bombs. One hit in a field, two hits on the territory of a farm and damaged agricultural machinery. The fourth hit was on the territory of a private household, the house was damaged, no casualties. The fifth hit on the territory of a non-operational farm.

At 4:51pm, Buhaivka village of Vovchansk community, Chuhuiv region  was damaged. As a result of the enemy shelling the grass was burning and 2 private houses were damaged.

At 3:50pm, Kupiansk was shelled. As a result of the shelling, the roof and a room of the house were burning.

At 3:42pm, the enemy attacked Hlushkivka village of Kurylivka community, Kupiansk region. The enemy shell hit the ground near the kindergarten. A woman of 1966 year of birth was killed.

At 3:14pm, Bohuslavka village of Borova community, Izium region, was shelled. As a result of the hostile shelling, two residential buildings were destroyed and three buildings damaged. Two people were injured: a man and a woman, locals who lived in one of the houses.

At around 1:45pm, the invaders attacked Kupiansk with a drone, damaging the administrative building.

Towards Kharkiv, russian invaders tried to storm the positions of our units near Vovchansk and Tykhe three times with the support of aviation. All enemy attacks were repelled.

Towards Kupiansk, there were ten combat engagements with the invaders. The enemy tried to improve the tactical situation near Petropavlivka, Synkivka and Pishchane. All enemy attacks near Synkivka were repelled and fighting is still ongoing near Petropavlivka and Pishchane.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reported as of 10am russian troops are trying to drive Ukrainian units out of their positions near Petropavlivka, Andriivka, Hrekivka and Nevske towards Kupiansk, five battles are ongoing.

As of yesterday, the most tense situation remains towards Pokrovsk, with three fighting incidents near Novooleksandrivka, Yevhenivka and Novoselivka Persha, and three more attacks have been repelled.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, informed that Ukrainian troops are tactically engaging russian firing positions in Serebrianka forestry in Luhansk oblast and Klishchiivka in Donetsk oblast. Not only russian troops are storming these frontline areas, but Ukrainian soldiers are also attacking.

Velyka Novosilka military command stated that on 15 June, the russian army shelled Ulakly village of Velyka Novosilka community, Volnovakha region, killing three people and injuring five others.

Serhii Chaus, Head of Chasiv Yar CMA, said that since the beginning of the week, two more people have been evacuated from the city but on 15 June, there was no evacuation. Now there are 658 people in the settlement.

3 people were killed and 5 injured as a result of the morning shelling of Ulakly village of Velyka Novosilka community. The village was hit by cluster munitions from Smerch MRLs at around 9am today. Two women aged 39 and 32 and a man aged 30 were killed. 5 people sustained injuries of varying degrees. Two administrative buildings, a private house, a shop and 8 cars were damaged.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 15 June is as follows:

Volnovakha region. In Novoukrainka of Vuhledar community, 2 houses and an enterprise were damaged.

Pokrovsk region. In Hirnyk of Kurakhove community, 4 people were injured, 14 apartment buildings, 35 private houses, 3 administrative buildings and an infrastructure facility were damaged. Kurakhove and Veselyi Hai of the community were also shelled.

Kramatorsk region. In Lyman, 1 house was destroyed and 11 damaged; in Zarichne, a person was injured and 6 houses damaged.

Bakhmut region. In Toretsk community, 10 houses were damaged in Pivnichne and 9 in Niu-York. In Chasiv Yar community, 4 private houses were damaged. In Siversk, 1 house was destroyed and 2 damaged.

In total, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 11 times over the day. 185 people, including 43 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that  yesterday russians injured 6 civilians: 4 in Hirnyk, 1 in Zarichne and Ptyche.

Petro Andriushchenko, Mariupol Mayor’s Councillor, reported that the invaders started building new fortifications along Mariupol-Donetsk highway, near Hranitne village, which is the main logistical artery for supplying the frontline: Volnovakha – Vuhledar – Kurakhove direction – Donetsk.

Luhansk oblast

On 14 June, at about 1pm, the enemy carried out mortar shelling of the front-line village.A local resident was killed. The woman stayed in Nevske with her 84-year-old mother, who needs constant care. The issue of evacuating an elderly woman to a safe place is currently being resolved.

Regular conversations are held with every resident of de-occupied villages located near the front line – people are persuaded to leave. The evacuation team is always ready. 

It is currently extremely dangerous in Nevske and neighbouring villages. People understand this, but stubbornly hold on to their own property. That’s why there are tragic cases.

Over the past day, about 40 explosions were heard directly in Nevske. The village was shelled with artillery, mortars, and multiple rocket launchers. The russians also hit Makiivka with Grads. Mortars and artillery fired at Stelmakhivka.

Nevertheless, a weekly supply of bread, food and household chemicals was delivered to the residents of Nevske and Novoliubivka. Even though it is dangerous, yet our support for those who have not yet decided to leave the frontline villages continues.

At the same time, the enemy has increased the number of attacks towards Kupiansk and Lyman. There were a total of 19 russian attacks there. Another three were towards Siversk.

The enemy is putting pressure near Hrekivka and Nevske. The situation there is currently under control.

The invaders fired unguided aerial missiles at the territory of Serebrianka forest.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The State Emergency Service of Kyiv oblast reported that on the morning of 15 June, a fire at an industrial enterprise, which started on 12 June as a result of russia’s armed aggression, was extinguished.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, reported that on the morning of 14 June o, missile threats alternated with drone attacks in Kyiv oblast. Air defence forces were on alert in the region and all enemy UAVs were destroyed. As a result of falling debris, a grass flooring caught fire in one of the districts. There were no hits to residential or critical infrastructure or casualties.

The RMA reported that Irpin presented the start of a new stage of completion of the medical building of the central city hospital. The facility was planned to open in the summer of 2022, but a full-scale war prevented it from doing so. During the fighting, the hospital was damaged and restored at the expense of the Luxembourg Red Cross. Construction is planned to continue as part of a joint project between the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the World Bank Ukraine.

EUR 8.6m will be allocated by the Belgian international cooperation agency Enabel for construction of shelters and reconstruction of educational institutions in Kyiv oblast. According to Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the regional military administration, the funds will be allocated for works at five facilities in the region. The agreement was reached during the Ukraine Recovery Conference held in Berlin.

A tactical medicine training for civilians was conducted by the Ukrainian Women’s Guard for residents of the Nemishaiive territorial community. In the town’s community centre, the participants attended a theoretical course and learnt how to provide first aid in a war situation.

The second Protasiv Yar festival has opened in Kyiv in memory of Roman Ratushnyi, a civil society activist and scout from the 93rd Cold Yar Brigade, who was killed defending Ukraine near Izium, Kharkiv oblast, in June 2012.

Zhytomyr oblast

A photo exhibition of the fallen soldier Roman Solonynka “This moment is like eternity… My life is in it” has opened in Zhytomyr. More than fifty photographs taken by the photographer during his life are presented at the House of Ukrainian Culture. Roman was a famous Ukrainian photographer. When the full-scale invasion started, he voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine, served with the 72nd Brigade and was killed on 5 May 2022 during a counter-offensive by Ukrainian troops. 

Sumy oblast

The regional military administration reported that at night and on the morning of 15 June, russian forces attacked the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast 14 times. There were 26 attacks with mortars and FPV drones.  Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, and Seredyna-Buda communities were shelled.

The russian military fired 19 times in Sumy oblast, with a total of 38 attacks recorded using various types of weapons. 8 border communities were shelled: Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Shalyhyne, Esman, and Shostka.

As a result of the russian shelling of Shostka community on 14 June, one person was killed and four injured of varying severity. The consequences of the attack are being clarified.

On 14 June, an attack by an enemy FPV drone launched from the territory of the russian federation damaged a social bus with 20 civilians in it in Esman community. Three people were injured.

Due to the constant shelling by the russian federation, mandatory evacuation of the population is being carried out from eight more settlements within the 10-kilometre zone in Sumy oblast.The evacuation includes the following settlements of the Bilopillia community: Sokhani, Novi Vyrky, Myrlogy, Gurynivka, Bublikove, Girine, Kandybine, Oleksenky. As of 11 June, 266 people remained there, including 27 children.

The Ministry of Energy reported that 4,268 residents remain without electricity due to russian shelling in Sumy oblast. Power engineers have reconnected electricity to 77 subscribers who lost power due to the hostilities.

The United Civil Aviation Authority informed that the reconstruction of two apartment buildings in Trostyanets is ongoing. The buildings were damaged in March 2022 during the occupation of the city.

The SES announced the opening of the  first Safety Class in the oblast in the fire and rescue unit in Trostianets. The premises in the fire station were renovated and equipped with all the necessary materials and facilities for conducting classes with the help of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine.

Chernihiv oblast

SBGSU reported that over the past day, russian troops fired 18 mortar and cannon artillery strikes towards four border settlements. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk communities were under enemy fire.

According to Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office report, 109 prisoners in Chernihiv oblast expressed a desire to mobilise to the Armed Forces. Of these, 103 are subject to the law on voluntary mobilisation of prisoners. As of 14 June, 49 convicts have joined military units.

Chernihiv oblast received four trucks of school furniture, including ones for laboratory classrooms, from the French charity Protection Civile. Based on the regional administration’s report, the aid was distributed among 8 educational institutions in the region.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

In the evening, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region 5 times. They attacked the region’s center and Pokrovsk community. 3 private houses, a canteen and a power line were damaged. In the morning, the enemy launched a kamikaze drone at Myrove community.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region 15 times. They attacked the region’s center, Pokrovsk and Myrove communities with kamikaze drones and artillery. A hotel, a private house, unused buildings and a utility company were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

Valerii Pokotylo from Vinnytsia is a mortar battery gunner in the 14th Brigade of the National Guard Chervona Kalyna. At the age of 25, the soldier has undergone more than ten surgeries, and after rehabilitation he plans to return to duty. Valerii was wounded towards Zaporizhzhia when an enemy shell exploded nearby, and the fragments hit his right arm and leg. The defender underwent rehabilitation in Lviv, and within a month he was back on his feet. The defender has not lost faith and intends to return to the front line to defend Ukraine.

Children of Vinnytsia community handed over 22 camouflage nets to the defenders. The nets were made by members of the VinPatriot children’s volunteer center from all secondary schools in the community.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, announced that three fallen soldiers from Kirovohrad oblast have been awarded state awards. The awards were presented to the families of the heroes. 

Ivan Kohuch was awarded the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). He was killed on February 13, 2023, while performing a combat mission.

Viacheslav Bereza from Katerynivka community was awarded the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously).

Police lieutenant Ihor Misiun was posthumously awarded the Presidential Award For Defense of Ukraine. The lieutenant was killed during the shelling of Kherson railway station. 

Poltava oblast

Soldiers Vadym Lenda, Anton Odnokoz and Oleh Oliinyk were killed while defending Ukraine.

Vadym Lenda from the village of Popivka, Komyshnyansk community. The soldier was killed on June 10 while performing his military duty near the village of Novodonetske, Donetsk oblast.

Anton Odnokoz was born and raised in Horishni Plavni. The soldier was killed on June 8 while performing a combat mission as a result of artillery shelling near Kozatskyi Island in Kherson oblast.

Oleh Oliinyk was born and lived in the village of Malyi Kobeliachok, Novosanzhar community. The soldier was killed on June 2 while performing a combat mission near the village of Mala Tokmachka, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

The sound of an explosion was heard in Myrhorod community. The occupiers launched a missile attack on a military airfield.

Cherkasy oblast

10 military families in Cherkasy oblast received apartments. They were provided with housing in an inclusive apartment building that has been under construction since 2022. The house is autonomous, functional and has a shelter.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 14 June, the russian army conducted 437 attacks on ten towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. 215 drones of various modifications attacked Mahdalynivka, Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka.   There were no casualties. 

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that towards Orikhiv the Armed Forces of  Ukraine repelled two russian attacks. Soldiers of the russian army tried to force the Ukrainian military out of their positions near Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

The Omega Wings detachment of the National Guard of Ukraine, reported that a field depot with ammunition and firing positions of the russian army were destroyed towards Zaporizhzhia.

The State Emergency Service of Zaporizhzhia said that the two fires occurred as a result of russian shelling in the frontline towns Orikhiv and Huliaipole, Polohiv region. There were no casualties.

Mykolaiv oblast

On 14 June, at 07:10, russian troops shelled the town of Ochakiv in Ochakiv community. A shop was damaged and wooden houses on the territory of the sports complex caught fire, which was extinguished by rescuers. At 4:28pm, the water area of Ochakiv community came under enemy mortar fire. 

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that at around 5:50pm, the russian federation launched a missile attack outside the settlement of Bashtanka district. As a result, a hangar was damaged and a fire broke out on dry grass and shrubs in an open area. There were no casualties. 

There is a rehabilitation centre in Mykolaiv that provides assistance in more than 20 areas of physiotherapy. Priority is given to military personnel on preferential terms. In addition, the centre provides treatment and rehabilitation after injuries and free massages for children with cerebral palsy.

Odesa oblast

At the Black Sea Security Forum, Taras Vysotskyi, Minister of Agrarian Policy, says that the ports of Greater Odesa and the Danube account for 87% of agricultural exports. The figure for the ports of Greater Odesa has increased significantly. Speaking of the Danube ports, last year they were actively working, but now their share has decreased. 

Kherson oblast

On 15 June the Armed Forces of southern Ukraine destroyed 48 pieces of weapons and military equipment of the russian army over the day. In particular, they destroyed a Murom-M video surveillance system, an electronic warfare station, 11 cannons, two reconnaissance UAVs, hit three observation posts, a field ammunition depot and eliminated 127 russian soldiers.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that on 14 June, the russian army shelled 18 settlements in Kherson oblast. Seven private houses and a car wash were damaged. One person was killed and another one injured. 

The South Operational Command reported that on 14 June, Air Forces destroyed three russian drones in Kherson oblast. In particular, a reconnaissance Supercam, Orlan-10 and a strike Lancet. 

Since the start of demining operations in Kherson oblast, sappers have defused 46,351 explosive items.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Barrier-free Council was formed in Volyn RMA. The 1st meeting was held online to connect participants from regions and communities.

Zakarpattia oblast

Construction work within the framework of the project of the 4.5.0 Recovery Center regional rehabilitation centre has begun. Currently, work is underway to dismantle the old internal structures and form the foundation for the new extension, which will house a physical rehabilitation complex and a pool for the restoration of motor activity.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that the community sent 35 FPV drones and a Mavic to the 110th Separate Mechanised Brigade.

Lviv oblast

64 British volunteers came to Lviv oblast to hand over 32 SUVs to the soldiers. This is the 15th mission within the Pickups for Peace initiative by  British farmer Mark Laird. In total, over 360 SUVs have been presented to Ukrainian defenders.

Since the beginning of the war, Pham Tri, Roman Catholic priest of Vietnamese origin from Florida, has donated $45,000 in aid. He has been coming to Lviv for the 3rd year in a row to support and help those families who especially need it. Every year, during his vacation, the father goes to different countries with a mission of help and support.

Lviv City Council reports that almost a hundred defenders from 8 medical institutions of Lviv oblast attended the concert of the INSO-Lviv orchestra at the Philharmonic Hall. As part of the City Heals program, a special concert was prepared for the participants to help them in their rehabilitation.

In Lviv, a mural was painted on the facade of a building, dedicated to Oleh Khristenko, defender of Ukraine. On the mural there are 2 images of Oleh, the chevron of the 3rd Assault Brigade, in which the man served, the emblem of the patronage service Angels of Azov and the text of the nationalist’s prayer. There are also two QR codes: after reading the 1st one, everyone can hear the prayer of a nationalist, and the 2nd one transfers to the account for donation. Oleh Khristenko ‘Krylov’ was killed on 7 June, 2023 near Bakhmut from mortar shelling. On 11 August, 2023, he was posthumously awarded with the III degree For Courage Order.

Rivne oblast

Families of fallen soldiers from Rivne oblast received presidential awards. Senior soldier Roman Meleshchuk was awarded the I degree For Courage Order, the III degree For Courage Orders were awarded to soldiers Leonid Avramyshyn and Mykola Silchuk, and the For Military Service to Ukraine medal was awarded to soldier Anatolii Borotiuk.

Ternopil oblast

A charity performance in support of the military took place in Belobozhnytsia community. Over UAH 5,700 was donated to purchase drones for the Armed Forces.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The regional forum Human Rights in Conditions of War: Khmelnytskyi was held in Khmelnytskyi. The event brought together representatives of authorities, human rights organisations and the public to discuss pressing issues of human rights compliance under martial law. The purpose of the event was to make the participants familiar with the Annual Report of the Commissioner, its presentation taking into account the regional aspect and highlighting the situation regarding the observance of human rights in Khmelnytskyi oblast. The search for mechanisms to overcome challenges in the conditions of martial law in order to ensure compliance with the rights and freedoms of a person and a citizen was also discussed.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the City Council was held in Khmelnytskyi. Specifically, property for almost UAH 17m was donated to military units. Also, changes to the National Resistance program related to the need to help with recruiting work for military units were introduced.

Chernivtsi oblast

Nedoboiv community allocated UAH 13,000 to provide material assistance to military personnel for treatment. In addition, the community allocated UAH 92,500 for food for 47 IDP children.

The Place of Strength Veterans Support Center has started work in Chernivtsi community. It is a space for veterans, their family members, those of the killed, and missing Defenders of Ukraine. Here, visitors will receive  psychological assistance, social and legal support.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

On 15-16 June, a large-scale event for international politics is taking place at the Burgenstock resort in the canton of Nidwalden – the Peace Summit, where world leaders and representatives of countries will gather to discuss the achievement of peace in Ukraine. 92 countries and 8 international organisations are taking part, specifically heads of state or government, ministers or representatives, ambassadors and observers.

The joint statement of G7 leaders, published following the results of the summit, states that russia must pay Ukraine all the damages caused by the war. According to the World Bank, the amount of damage caused is currently estimated at $486bn. However, this amount is increasing every day.

EU ambassadors reached an agreement on the start of negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU. The 1st intergovernmental conferences are scheduled for 25 June. Hungary and Slovakia did not block the decision.

The EU sent 12 sapper dogs to Ukraine. As part of the project of the European Commission, the Ukrainian army received 1 German and 11 Belgian shepherds.

The Netherlands will allocate an additional €10m for language courses for refugees from Ukraine. It is indicated that thanks to the allocated funds, the municipalities will be able to continue supporting refugees from Ukraine in learning the Dutch language in 2025. This enables Ukrainians to find a job in their specialty, communicate with local residents and participate in the life of the community.

Budapest will not block NATO aid to Ukraine. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, agreed on this with Viktor Orban, Hungarian Prime Minister.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. They discussed the development of bilateral relations and the expansion of trade, in particular in the context of the operation of the Black Sea export corridor.
