It has been the 1056 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The Defense Forces of Ukraine are holding back the offensive of Russian occupiers. The terrorists continue to destroy Ukrainian cities and villages with missile, aviation, and artillery strikes.

The Defense Forces are taking necessary measures to prevent the enemy from advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory. As of now, 84 combat clashes have occurred.

The artillery and mortar fire of the enemy has affected communities in the settlements of Mykhalchyna Sloboda, Buchky, Klyusy, Bleshniya, and Leonivka in the Chernihiv region; Oleksandrivka, Popivka, Progress, and Shalyhyne in the Sumy region. Airstrikes were conducted on Oleksandrivka, Hremyach, and Sytnye.

In the Kharkiv direction, enemy aviation activity resulted in strikes on Vovchansk and Vetyaryne.

In the Kupiansk direction, Russian occupiers attacked the positions of the Defense Forces twice near Nova Kruhlyakivka and Tabaivka, and battles are ongoing.

In the Lyman direction, the occupying army launched 12 attacks during the day on Ukrainian positions near the settlements of Kopanky, Hrekivka, Novoyehorivka, Raihorodka, Makiivka, Zarichne, Terny, and Hryhorivka. Six clashes are still ongoing. Enemy aviation carried out KAB-guided bomb strikes on Velykyi Burluk, Kupiansk, Hlushkivtsi, Novoosynove, and Prystyn.

The occupying forces continue to search for weak spots in Ukrainian defenses near Bilohorivka, Verkhnokamianske, Ivano-Daryivka, and Vyiimka in the Siversk direction. The Defense Forces successfully repelled 11 enemy attacks, with three clashes still ongoing. Additionally, the enemy launched an airstrike with guided bombs on Zvanivka.

In the Kramatorsk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled five assaults by Russian occupiers. Eight attacks are still underway, as the enemy tries to break through to Stupochky, Predtechyne, Oleksandro-Shultyne, and the area around Chasiv Yar.

In the Toretsk direction, Ukrainian defenders are repelling two enemy assaults near the settlement of Toretsk. Furthermore, the enemy carried out airstrikes with KAB-guided bombs on the areas of Kostiantynivka and Oleksandro-Kalynove.

In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian occupiers made 23 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions near the settlements of Yantarne, Novotoretske, Promin, Zelene, Novyi Trud, Chunyshyne, Zvyrove, Uspenivka, Novoandriivka, Nadiivka, Petropavlivka, and Shevchenko. The Defense Forces held their ground and repelled 15 attacks, with eight clashes still ongoing.

In the Novopavlivsk direction, the enemy tried five times to breach Ukrainian defenses near the settlements of Velyka Novosilka and Neskuchne. The battles continue.

In the Prydniprovske direction, the enemy made one unsuccessful attempt to assault Ukrainian positions.

In the Kursk direction, there have been 12 clashes since the beginning of the day, with four still ongoing. Additionally, the enemy launched three airstrikes, dropping three guided bombs.

In other directions, there are no significant changes.

In the summer of 2024, Russia removed over 3,000 children from the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson region under the guise of recreational, wellness, and cultural-educational programs. Russian forces transported Ukrainian children to various camps in remote regions of Russia. Among the so-called activities for the children were defense-sports camps in Vologda and “University Shifts” organized in Tula. The Russians involve Ukrainian children in excursions, masterclasses, sports competitions, and programs aimed at forced assimilation and militarization. This was reported by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets.

In Ukraine, an online platform about the state prosthetics program has been launched. The platform provides detailed information on types of rehabilitation devices and the procedure for obtaining them, the possibility of compensation for self-purchased items, repair services, maintenance, and replacement of prosthetics. The new resource also offers a step-by-step guide for submitting an application, going through all the procedural stages, and obtaining the device. This was reported by the Ministry of Social Policy.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline Update

Russian forces conducted airstrikes on Velykyi Burluk, Kupiansk, Hlushkivka, Novoosynove, Prystyn, as well as Vovchansk and Veterynarne, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Kupiansk Direction

The occupiers launched two assaults on Defense Forces positions near Nova Kruhlyakivka and Tabaivka. As of 4:00 PM, one battle is ongoing. Additionally, on the Lyman direction, Russian troops attacked the area around Kopanky.

Kharkiv Direction

The enemy attempted two offensives near Vovchansk the previous day.

Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled enemy assaults near Lozova, Zapadne, and Dvorichna on the Kupiansk axis, with three attacks recorded over the past day.

Dvorichna Combat Zone

Dvorichna remains an area of active combat operations, confirmed Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Regional Military Administration (RMA).

Russian forces have entered Dvorichna in the Kharkiv region. Around 100 residents are still in the settlement, reported Halyna Turbaba, head of the settlement’s military administration.

Shelling

Around 10:00, a Russian drone crashed into a nine-story building in Kupiansk, hitting a floor above and breaking through the ceiling of an apartment where a woman was present. She sustained injuries from reinforced concrete debris, according to Andrii Kanashevych, head of the RVA.

As a result of the morning strike on the border town of Kozacha Lopan, in addition to damage to a gas pipeline, private homes were affected—windows were shattered, and roofs destroyed, reported (https://suspilne.media/kharkiv/924421-zitel-kozacoi-lopani-na-harkivsini-zaginuv-cerez-udar-rf-koli-vijsov-u-dvir-pogoduvati-svogo-sobaku/?utm_source=copylink&utm_medium=ps) live on Suspilne by Viacheslav Zadorenko, head of the Derhachi MVA.

The man who died was a local civilian resident, Zadorenko noted: “He was unfit for military service, helped locals, and fed animals that remained in the village.”

At 04:05, Kupiansk district, Kupiansk community, and the city of Kupiansk came under Russian attack, according to the OVA. A KAB struck open ground. Four vehicles were damaged.

At 01:05, Kupiansk district, Velykoburlutska TG, the village of Velykyi Burluk was shelled. As a result of a KAB strike, three private houses and a car were damaged.

Over the past day, the occupiers used nine UAVs of various types and three KABs against unarmed residents of the Kharkiv region. Recently, the enemy has increasingly relied on unmanned aerial vehicles to target civilian objects, with high intensity in the use of various UAVs, including FPV drones.

At 21:49, Bohodukhiv district, Krasnokutska TG, the village of Murafa came under Russian fire. Falling debris from a downed Shahed UAV damaged a residential house, an outbuilding, and a car. A 47-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were injured and hospitalized.

At 19:09, Chuhuiv district, the city of Chuhuiv, was struck by a Shahed UAV. Window glass in a five-story residential building was damaged, along with a gas pipeline and five cars. A child aged 1 year and 7 months was diagnosed with an acute stress reaction but was not hospitalized.

At 10:30, Kupiansk district, Kupiansk TG, the village of Osynove was hit by Russian fire. Fragments from a “Molniya” UAV were discovered. No reports of damage or casualties have been received.

At 08:20, Kharkiv district, Lypetska TG, the village of Vesele came under attack. A 41-year-old man was injured by an FPV drone strike and hospitalized.

At 08:10, Kupiansk district, Kindrashivska TG, the village of Kindrashivka was shelled with Grad MLRS. A private household was damaged.

Other

As part of intensified evacuation measures from the Kupiansk and Borivske directions, 15 people were evacuated.

Donetsk oblast

Over the past day, the occupiers used nine UAVs of various types and three KABs against unarmed residents of the Kharkiv region.

▪️ Recently, the enemy has increasingly utilized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for strikes on civilian objects. The use of various types of UAVs, including FPV drones, remains highly intensive.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that in the Kyiv oblast, as a result of a nighttime drone attack in one of the settlements, the roof of a private house was damaged. Also, fragments of the downed targets are falling outside of settlements in open areas. There were no civilian casualties or hits to critical or residential infrastructure.

Kyiv City State Administration reported that in the evening of 13 January, several Kyiv metro stations were operating only in the shelter mode. Later, the metro gradually resumed its normal train schedule.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that another 500 UAVs were handed over to the frontline by Kyiv community members to the 72nd separate mechanised brigade named after the Black Zaporozhians.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit. He plans to discuss further assistance to Ukraine and assess the military situation.

Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Olena Kondratyuk informed that Speaker of the Latvian Parliament Daiga Mierini has arrived in Kyiv on an official visit. The Latvian delegation is scheduled to meet with the Ukrainian authorities and representatives of training and rehabilitation centres for the military.

The Borshchahiv Village Council has allocated financial assistance from the local budget in the amount of UAH 5 million to Komyshuvakha village community in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, with which it has signed a memorandum of cooperation. The outpost community from Zaporizhzhia has urgent needs to restore private and apartment buildings and public utilities damaged by the enemy, purchase special equipment, build a shelter, and conduct recreational and educational activities for children.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that during an attack by enemy drones in Zhytomyr oblast at night, fragments of downed targets damaged premises, petrol pumps and cars at a petrol station, and one person was injured. The injured person was hospitalized with injuries to his limbs.

The head of Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Bunechko, met with representatives of leading Estonian publications and TV channels. They discussed implemented and upcoming joint projects with Estonia, military realities and constant russian shelling, the destruction of infrastructure, and support for the energy sector, including through the support of partners.

Sumy oblast

According to the regional military administration, on 14 January, air defense units shot down 14 enemy “Shahed” drones over Sumy oblast. Since the beginning of 2025, air defense units in the oblast have destroyed a total of 123 russian drones.

On the night of 13 January, the russian army carried out an airstrike on the city of Sumy using guided aerial bombs (GABs). The attack damaged an administrative building, office spaces, and warehouses. In nearby residential buildings, windows were shattered by the blast wave. Recovery efforts are ongoing. A mobile support hub has been set up on-site to assist residents whose homes were affected by the strike.

According to Mayor Stanislav Polyakov, russian bomb strike in Sumy damaged a heat supply pipeline. To carry out repairs, heating service to 71 subscribers was temporarily halted. By approximately 2pm, the heat supply was restored.

The RMA informed that during night and morning, on 14 January, russians carried out 6 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 16 explosions by MLRS (11 explosions), GABs (2 explosions), and FPV-drones (3 explosions). The attacks targeted Sumy, Khotin, Myropilia, Nova Slobidka, Shalyhyne communities. As a result of shelling in Nova Slobidka community, two private houses were damaged. In Sumy community, an administrative building and a residential property were also affected.

On the evening of 13 January, a russian “Shahed” drone strike on Nova Slobidka community caused a fire that destroyed a house where a displaced family lived, the community’s Facebook page reported. At the time of the strike, four people were in the house, including a 12-year-old child and an 85-year-old grandmother. They managed to escape unharmed.

On 13 January, russians carried out 80 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 128 explosions. The attacks targeted 12 communities: Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilipillia, Vorozhba, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Putyvl, Hlukhiv, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, and Svesa communities. The enemy attacked by artillery, mortars, FPV-drones, drops from UAVs, by GABs.

According to the Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, russian forces attacked a civilian vehicle with a drone in the territory of Velyka Pysarivka community around 4pm on 13 January. As a result, a woman was killed, and a man was injured. The deceased was a resident of Pozhnia village, and her husband sustained injuries. The woman died on the way to the hospital.

The regional military administration reported that as a result of enemy attacks on 13 January, 3 private residential buildings, a garage, and 2 cars were damaged in the territory of the Velyka Pysarivka community, a non-residential building in Vorozhba community, and a russian drone fell on the territory of a critical infrastructure facility in Putyvl community.

The State Emergency Service informed that rescuers came under renewed attack while extinguishing a fire in a residential area following a drone attack in Konotop region on the evening of 13 January. After the security situation normalized, the fire was extinguished, and no one was injured.

 The National Police reported that local residents near one of the settlements in Sumy region discovered a drone. Police explosives technicians neutralized the warhead of the russian UAV and took it to a training ground for destruction by explosion.

 Sumy City Council announced that six modular homes for internally displaced persons will be built in Sumy. The first two are to be built in the first half of the year. 

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Service of Ukraine reported that the russian army attacked 12 villages on the border of Chernihiv oblast last day. The russian military struck by GABs, drones, FPV-drones, artillery and mortars.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community: 4 strikes by guided aerial bombs near Hremiach; 2 drops of an explosive device from a UAV near Mykhalchyna Sloboda.

Semenivka community: 2 drops of explosive devices from a UAV and four strikes by FPV-drones towards Zarichchia; 23 hits by cannon artillery, one strike by an FPV-drone and one drop of an explosive device from a UAV near Tymonovychi; 3 mortar hits near Hremiachka; drop of an explosive device from a UAV near Karpovychi; 2 drops of an explosive device from a UAV near Halahanivka; 8 mortar hits near Medvedivka; 1 strike by an FPV-drone near Mkhy.

Snovsk community: one strike by FPV-drones near Khrinivka and one strike by  Mlynok.

Chernihiv border detachment reported that in two weeks of 2025, the russian army attacked border guards in Chernihiv oblast more than 170 times. In particular, during this period, the russians carried out almost 90 attacks using drones.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

During the night, the occupiers once again terrorized the civilian population of Nikopol region. 3 people were injured, including a child. In Marhanets community, a 61-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman were hospitalised in moderate condition following a Grad missile strike, while a 14-year-old girl is receiving treatment at home. All victims have received necessary medical care. 4 private houses, 2 utility buildings, 3 power lines and infrastructure were damaged. Also, the enemy targeted Nikopol by artillery, damaging an industrial enterprise.

Air defence forces in the oblast were active overnight. Defenders from the Air Command East shot down 3 enemy UAVs.

Throughout the day, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region more than a dozen times, by artillery, kamikaze drones and dropping ordnance from UAVs. They targeted the regional centre, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka and Myrove communities. An enterprise and 2 vehicles were damaged. There were no casualties reported.

Two years ago, a russian missile strike claimed the lives of 46 people at 118 Peremoha Street. Dozens were injured. The enemy hit a residential building, striking peaceful residents.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​At the Holy Virgin Mary of the Angels Church in Vinnytsia, an event raised UAH 14,000 for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The funds will support the 28th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, reported that air defence systems were active overnight in Kirovohrad oblast, with no casualties or damage reported.

Kropyvnytskyi paid tribute to fallen soldier Oleksandr Kovalenko, who was killed in battle on 3 January near Yunakivka village in Sumy oblast. He was 42 years old.

Kateryna Koltunova, Deputy Head of the RMA, stated that since the start of the full-scale russian invasion, the number of shelters in educational institutions in Kirovohrad oblast has increased ninefold, from 107 to 904. Last year, 238 shelters in schools were repaired, with plans to repair 32 more in 2025.

Poltava oblast

Valerii Voloshyn, Deputy Head of the Community, reported that in Hrebinka, a russian UAV crashed into a cemetery, damaging a monument to a local resident and memorials to fallen soldiers.

 

Poltava oblast paid tribute to soldier Volodymyr Khyzhniak, who was killed on 3 January 2025, during a combat mission near Yunakivka village in Sumy oblast as a result of a russian airstrike.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, informed that during an air raid alert, air defence systems destroyed 12 russian UAVs over the oblast. In Cherkasy oblast, debris damaged 5 windows in several commercial buildings. There were no casualties reported.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 13 January, the russian military carried out 196 strikes on 12 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. These included 95 artillery strikes targeting the areas of Lobkove, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Olhivske, Novodarivka and Malynivka.

According to the CMA, in the temporarily occupied city of Berdiansk, apartments and houses illegally confiscated from residents are reportedly being redistributed to certain categories of russian citizens for “improving living conditions”. Since no new housing is being constructed in the occupied territories, the only source of such “improvement” is property unlawfully seized from its rightful owners.

Mykolaiv oblast

Referring to the RMA, on the night of 14 January, air defence forces shot down 3 russian drones over the oblast.

On 13 January, russian forces attacked Kutsurub and Ochakiv communities by drones and artillery. The roof of a private house was damaged. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

Based on the information provided by the RMA, a nighttime russian attack on Odesa oblast damaged power lines, leaving 764 families without electricity. Energy workers have since restored power to all affected houses.

Kherson oblast

The RMA reported that in the evening, russian forces attacked a high-rise building in the suburbs of Kherson by a drone, resulting in a fire in one of the apartments. In Bilozirka, a private yard’s utility structure and a car caught fire due to a russian attack. Both fires were extinguished by emergency services.

According to activists from the Yellow Ribbon movement, in Nova Kakhovka and surrounding villages in the temporarily occupied territories of Kherson, FSB agents and occupation authorities conducted searches, breaking locks and entering closed houses.

Referring to the RMA, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone in Antonivka, a suburb of Kherson, injuring a 69-year-old man who suffered explosive trauma and shrapnel wounds to his leg.

An 88-year-old woman in Beryslav was seriously injured in a russian drone attack and was hospitalised in critical condition.

The russian forces also dropped explosives from a UAV onto a civilian vehicle in Tekstylne area of Kherson, injuring a 58-year-old man who sustained explosive trauma and acute stress reaction.

2 women from Beryslav sought medical help after being injured in a russian drone attack the previous day. Both were diagnosed with explosive injuries and concussions.

Roman Myroshko, Head of the CMA, informed that russian forces shelled Antonivka, a suburb of Kherson, overnight, injuring a 65-year-old woman who suffered blast trauma and shrapnel wounds to both legs.

According to the Southern Defence Forces, Ukrainian forces in the south targeted a russian fuel depot and 3 military shelters, eliminating 67 russian soldiers and destroying 45 units of russian weaponry and equipment.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, said that on the previous day, russian forces shelled 34 settlements in Kherson oblast, injuring 9 people and damaging an apartment building, 7 private houses, outbuildings and a cars.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent a Hymo M electronic warfare systems, 2 Shelter 6M electronic warfare systems, 8 DJI Mavic 3PRO, DJI Mavic 3T, 7 EcoFlow, an inverter gasoline generator, 5 OUKITEL tablets, and an ALIENTECH DUO II kit (antenna+adapters) to the military.

Zakarpattia oblast

As of 13 January, 2025, 333 people belonging to the IDP category are registered with the regional employment service in the oblast. 265 of them have the status of registered unemployed.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that the 17th Separate Electronic Warfare Battalion received a Motorola repeater and a set for it worth UAH 160,000 thanks to the budget funds.

Lviv oblast

The 3th Shturmova Bridge opened an FPV drone school in Lviv. Now anyone can take introductory courses in 6–9 days and learn a new profession that can be useful in the military. Everyone can even study in the evening after work.

The team of the Pokrova AMP-2 football club won the 1st amp football competition in Ukraine the Winter Cup. The tournament took place on 11-12 January in Kyiv as part of the League of the Strong project of the Ukrainian Football Association. This is an important event for people with amputees, because football for them is not only a sport, but also an opportunity to return to an active life and undergo rehabilitation.

The RMA reported that Olha Pavlyuk, Combat Medic from Lviv oblast, was awarded with the For the Defense of Ukraine state award.

Rivne oblast

Representatives of the RMA continue their dialogue with veterans. Another meeting with veterans and their family members took place in Nemovychy, Sarny region. They discussed treatment and rehabilitation opportunities, benefits, provision of administrative services, employment, and training of defenders.

Ternopil oblast

The 35th Separate Rifle Battalion received 26 FPV drones from Ternopil community.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 215 FPV drones worth UAH 3m to the Defense Forces.

Chernivtsi oblast

Six National Guardsmen from Bukovina Junior Sergeant Ilia Kryliuk, Private Taras Tashchuk, Private Andriy Haliuk, Private Pavlo Rusnak, Senior Private Vasyl Fedyuk and Private Ivan Zembitsky were awarded with the 3rd degree For Courage Order (posthumously). 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine will receive a humanitarian aid package from the EU worth €148m. The funds will be used to provide emergency assistance, including food, shelter, clean water, healthcare, and winter preparation.

Germany sent to Ukraine the 1st RCH 155 howitzer out of 54 ordered. 6 howitzers will initially remain in Germany for training of Ukrainian military personnel.

Daiga Mierine, Speaker of the Seimas of Latvia, arrived in Ukraine on an official visit. The Latvian delegation is scheduled to hold a number of meetings with Ukrainian authorities and representatives of training and rehabilitation centers for the military.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Emmanuel Macron, President of France. They discussed in detail the situation on the battlefield and the successes of Ukrainian forces in Kursk operation.
