War in Ukraine today: latest news, 08 December, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 1019th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The situation at the front is characterized by the enemy’s special activity towards Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. The enemy uses all available forces and means to achieve its goals. The defense forces act professionally and effectively, inflicting significant losses on the enemy.

There were 146 combat clashes on the frontline.

A number of settlements near the border with russia were affected by the enemy’s terrorist attacks. Marchikhina Buda, Baranivka, Demianivka, Bachivsk in Sumy oblast and Mykhalychina Sloboda in Chernihiv oblast were hit by artillery strikes.

Towards Kharkiv, russian occupiers stormed defensive lines of the Ukrainian army three times in the vicinity of Vovchansk, Lyptsi and Vysoka Yaruha.

Towards Kupiansk, the russian army actively attacked in the vicinity of Pishchane, Kolisnykivka, Lozova and Zahryzove eight times. Two enemy attacks are still ongoing.

Towards Lyman, the invading army carried out 21 attacks on Ukrainian positions near Bohuslavka, Druzheliubyvka, Kopanka, Zelenyi Hai, Zarichne, Terny, Yampolivka, Nadiia and Makiivka. Eight clashes ended unsuccessfully for the enemy, and another 13 are still ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, the invaders unsuccessfully stormed the positions of Ukrainian troops near Stupochky. The situation is under control.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy concentrated its offensive efforts in the vicinity of Toretsk, Diliivka, Leonidivka and Shcherbinivka, where seven clashes took place, and three more clashes are currently underway.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers made 43 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinities of Myroliubivka, Novotoretske, Promyn, Lysivka, Dachenske, Zelene, Novyi Trud, Zhovte and Chumatske. The defense forces are holding back the onslaught, and repelled 36 enemy attacks, and seven clashes are still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being clarified.

Towards Kurakhove, fighting continues near Sontsivka, Stari Terny, Maksymilianivka, Dachne, Kurakhove, Katerynivka, Yelizavetivka, Hanivka, Antonivka and Uspenivka i. According to updated information, 22 out of 31 enemy attacks were repelled today. Fierce fighting is ongoing.

Towards Vremivka, the enemy stormed the positions of Ukrainian units near Novosilka, Novodarivka, Sukhi Yaly and Blahodatne 13 times. Six clashes are ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv, the invaders attacked Ukrainian units near Nesterianka.

Towards Kherson, the invaders are not giving up attempts to knock Ukrainian units out of the occupied positions. Thus, they carried out three fruitless assaults there.

Towards Huliaipole and Siversk, the enemy did not conduct any active operations.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy informs that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 370,000 cases of providing assistance to the wounded have been reported. Also, according to Zelenskyy, russian losses exceed 750,000 people – 198,000 killed and more than 550,000 wounded.

Andrey Yusov, representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, informs that the fuel sector of russia has suffered significant damage as a result of the operations of the Ukrainian military. About a third of strategic facilities have received serious damage, which has a negative impact on logistical capabilities of the russian army.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv community, reports that russia launched two strikes with UAVs. At about 14:09, a russian aerial bomb fell in an open area near the village of Udy. At 14:11, a UAV fell on the beach in Zolochiv. The windows and roofs of four private houses, a rescue tower and power grids were damaged.

The day before at 23:22, Korobchyne village, Chuhuiv region was attacked. Grass was burning as a result of the shelling. Debris from an enemy UAV was found on the territory of a private household. There were no injuries or casualties.

At 14:45, the village of Orishanka, Zolochiv region was shelled. Outside the settlement, 2 UAVs were recorded hitting an open area. There was no information about casualties or damage.

After 2 pm, in the village of Kachalyvka, Bohodukhov region, a child was injured by the explosion of an unknown explosive object. The 12-year-old boy received shrapnel wounds, the device that the child picked up from the ground exploded in his hand. Hospitalized in a medical facility, his condition is moderate.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy twice tried in vain to advance towards Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, there were nine enemy attacks. Defense forces repelled enemy assault actions near Lozova, Masiutivka, Hlushkivka, Kolisnykivka, and Zelenyi Hai.

24 people (including 2 children) were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reported that over 70 attacks were repelled by the Defense Forces towards Kurakhove and Pokrovsk.

Towards Pokrovsk, the Armed Forces of Ukraine stopped 35 russian attacks near Promin, Lysivka, Dachenske, Pushkine, Zori, Hrodivka, Sukhyi Yar, Myrnohrad, Zhovte, Novyi Trud, and Novotroitske.

Towards Kurakhove, the Defense Forces repelled 42 attacks near Sontsivka, Zori, Kurakhivka, Yelizavetivka, Romanivka, Hannivka, Uspenivka, Rozlyv, Stari Terny, Dachne, and Neskuchne.

Mykhailo Stoikevich, Deputy Chief of staff of the 49th assault battalion Karpatska Sich, informs that intense fighting continues around Toretsk in Donetsk oblast, with russian troops storming Ukrainian positions every day. In addition to artillery, they are actively using drones. They also use the latest developments to overcome Ukrainian electronic warfare means.

Anastasia Bobovnikova, Spokeswoman of Luhansk Regional Military, informs that during the assault near Nelypivka, russian occupiers stormed the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a group of 80 people on scooters, motorcycles and armored vehicles. The group was destroyed, but the occupiers’ tactics of “throwing meat” are effective, especially in urban battles.

According to the regional police, russian troops attacked five settlements in Donetsk oblast . The russian army struck Dachne, Katerynivka, Pokrovske with artillery, and dropped FAB-250 bombs on Novotoretske.

Andrii Polukhin,  representative of the press service of the 24th Motorized Rifle Brigade, reports that the Ukrainian military cleared one of the districts of the city of Chasiv Yar. This is one of the successful operations. The russian army is trying to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders near Chasiv Yar and is using infantry groups as a DRG.

Yevhenii Tkachev, Head of Proliska humanitarian mission in Donetsk oblast, says that russian FPV drones on fiber optics are flying to the highway leading from Pokrovsk to Pavlohrad. Because of this, volunteers are forced to look for detours when planning the evacuation of civilians from Donetsk oblast.

Olena Rudenko, representative of Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office, informs that on December 8, Russian troops probably shot an FPV drone at a house in the village of Shcherbynivka, Toretsk community. As a result, a man was injured.

Operational situation in the region as of the morning of December 8:

Pokrovsk region. In Dachne, Kurakhove community, 2 people were killed. In Pokrovsk, 5 houses were damaged.

Kramatorsk region. In Katerynivka, Illinivka community, 1 person was injured, 1 object was damaged. In Kostiantynivka community, numerous houses were damaged again.

Bakhmut region. In Chasiv Yar community, 4 private houses, 3 high-rise buildings and 2 non-residential buildings were damaged. In Siversk, 4 houses were damaged.

In total, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 7 times. 158 people were evacuated from the front line, including 13 children.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk RMA, says that russians killed 2 residents of Donetsk oblast – in Dachne. Another  person was injured  .

 Luhansk oblast

The invaders stormed the positions of Ukrainian troops near Tverdokhlibove, Hrekivka and Makiivka. The enemy also tried to advance in Serebrianka forest. The enemy used 78 drones, which they directed at fortifications of the Ukrainian defenders. The invaders opened fire from artillery installations six times.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk RMA, the invaders in the temporarily captured part of Luhansk oblast obliged farmers to re-register their equipment under the legislation of the russian federation, for this it is necessary to have a russian passport. However, when re-registering, they allowed presenting not only documents on the ownership of agricultural equipment, but also a document on the attachment, so to speak, of the “nationalized” equipment to a legal entity. That is, russians will try to legalize the “extorted” movable property.

Luhansk RMA reports that more than 250 schools in the so-called “lpr” have received equipment for specialized classrooms this year. Most of them are equipped for the new subject “Fundamentals of Homeland Defense”, as well as for related subjects – initial military training and medical care. Children will be prepared for war according to the official program of the russian Ministry of Education.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that a private house, two outbuildings and a greenhouse were damaged in Kyiv oblast as a result of falling debris in one of the settlements. The enemy attacked the area again at night with attack drones. There were no civilian casualties. No critical or residential infrastructure was hit.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko informed that almost every school and kindergarten in Kyiv is equipped with generators in case the institution is left without electricity. According to him, education in Kyiv is being conducted in schools and kindergartens that have shelters. Currently, some institutions continue to repair their shelters to meet key requirements.

On 5-6 December, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard NGO held a training on providing social services of crisis/emergency intervention in the field of child protection and social work for vulnerable families with children at the UWG HAB. The purpose of the event was to provide participants with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work in emergencies, including support for children and families affected by war, domestic violence or in difficult life circumstances.

Mine safety training for school students in grades 1-4 took place at Myrchany gymnasium. The training was conducted by Alla Tsyba, instructor from the Ukrainian Women’s Guard. The NGO regularly organises such classes for children and adults to make them aware of the risks associated with explosive devices and to protect the lives and health of Ukrainians during the war.

On 12 December, Kyiv Independent will premiere a documentary about military medics at Zhovten Cinema in Kyiv. The film Can You Hear Me, Friend tells the stories of combat medics who, for the first time since 2022, find themselves at a psychological rehabilitation retreat in Sweden and have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr oblast, 278 volunteers are officially registered. According to the State Tax Service, in total, 10,454 volunteers have been registered in Ukraine as of the end of November. In 2024, the register of volunteers increased by one and a half times.

The city council reported that a therapy room for military personnel, war veterans and their families, as well as for those affected by the war or in difficult life circumstances, has been launched in Zhytomyr. The project was implemented with the support of Austrian volunteers. Psychologists from the Centre for Social Services are to carry out preventive work and organise psycho-correctional classes in the space.

In Zhytomyr, an open lesson on the Defence of Ukraine was held for high school students. The event was organised by Zhytomyr Volunteer Headquarters. The students were shown how anti-tank and anti-aircraft simulators work, as well as models of mines, shells and drones. With the help of a VR helmet, the participants could try to learn how to fly a drone.

Sumy oblast

According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, during the night of 8 December, an explosive device was dropped from an enemy UAV on the territory of Bilopillia community. One explosion was recorded.

On 7 December, russians carried out 25 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 31 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Slobidka, Shalyhyne, Druzhbivka, and Seredyna-Buda communities. 

Bilopillia community: the enemy struck by a mortar (5 explosions) and dropped VOG-type explosive devices by an enemy quadcopter-type UAV (3 explosions).

Velyka Pysarivka community: strikes were carried out by FPV drones (8 explosions) and an VOG-type explosive device was also dropped from an enemy UAV (1 explosion).

Khotin community: a strike by FPV-drones was recorded (5 explosions).

Druzhbivka community: a strike was carried out by FPV-drones from the territory of the russian federation (2 explosions).

Seredyna-Buda community: a strike was carried out by a kamikaze drone of the “FPV” type (1 explosion).

Nova Slobidka community: a strike by a kamikaze drone of the “FPV” type was recorded (1 explosion).

Shalyhyne community: an explosive device was dropped from an enemy UAV (1 explosion).

Yunakivka community: the russians 3 mines dropped on the territory of the community.

Chernihiv oblast

On 7 Desember russian army attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast. In total, 34 explosions were recorded.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community:

– 120mm mortar, Vilchyky (2 hits).

Semenivka community:

– dropping an explosive device from a UAV, Kostobobriv (1 hit);

– FPV-drone, Kostobobriv (1 hit);

– dropping an explosive device from a UAV, Halahanivka (1 hit).

Snovsk community:

– dropping of explosive devices from UAVs, Yeline (5 hits);

– 120mm mortar, Kliusy (3 hits);

– dropping of an explosive device from UAVs, Kliusy (1 hit).

Horodnia community:

– AGS, Senkivka (20 hits).

No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.

The City Council reported that on 7 December, in Novhorod-Siverskyi, Chernihiv oblast, serviceman Ruslan Dovhusha was paid tribute to.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, said that at night, the enemy shelled Nikopol with artillery. A 64-year-old woman was injured in Kamianske as a result of a fence attack. A utility company, an educational institution, 5 apartment buildings, 2 cars and a power line were damaged.

During the day, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region about 15 times. They used kamikaze drones, artillery and dropped ammunition from a drone. They targeted the region centre, Pokrovske and Marhanets communities. A multi-storey building, 2 private houses, a petrol station, infrastructure, a gas pipeline and a power line were damaged. The enemy also attacked Sinelnykove region and Velyka Mykhailivka community with a kamikaze drone. Equipment was damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​In Vinnytsia, the World Day of the Ukrainian Headscarf raised UAH 30,000 for the Ukrainian army. The event included an exhibition of ancient headscarves, masterclasses and a charity event. The funds will be transferred to the 35th Marine Brigade for drones and vehicles.

Students of the 19th lyceum in Vinnytsia together with Cherniatyn gymnasium collected half a tonne of food for the defenders over two weeks.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, reported that a russian drone was destroyed in the Kirovohrad oblast at night. 

A weekly action in support of prisoners of war and missing persons “Don’t be silent! Captivity kills”.

Poltava oblast

A reminder campaign “Don’t be silent. Captivity kills”. People with posters, flags and photos of their relatives in captivity gathered near the city council and are going to walk through the city centre to the gazebo.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the evening of 8 December, russian tactical aviation launched guided aerial bombs at Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that russian forces carried out 269 attacks on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast on 7 December. Among these, 194 drones of various types targeted Lobkove, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, Malynivka, Novodarivka and Olhivske.

As reported by the National Resistance Centre, in the temporarily occupied Berdiansk, russians are forcing people with disabilities to weave camouflage nets, citing therapeutic benefits and development of fine motor skills.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the evening of 8 December, hostile high-speed aerial targets were detected in the southwest of Mykolaiv oblast.

Odesa oblast

Relying on the information provided by the Air Force, as of 9pm on 8 December, in the airspace over the Black Sea, UAVs were detected moving towards Zatoka in Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

According to the RMA, a 55-year-old man was injured in a russian drone attack on the suburb of Antonivka near Kherson. He sustained an explosive injury and shrapnel wounds to the head and chest. Doctors assessed his condition as moderate.

Around 5:15pm, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on a man in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. He sustained an explosive injury and shrapnel wounds to his arms, legs, and face and was hospitalised.

A 56-year-old man was injured in another drone attack on Kherson. He suffered an explosive injury and shrapnel wounds to his forearm and chest and is currently hospitalised.

Around 2:30pm, russian forces attacked Dniprovskyi district of Kherson by a drone. A 62-year-old resident was injured and hospitalised with an explosive injury and a shrapnel wound to his leg.

As reported by the Prosecutor’s Office, a 73-year-old man was killed in a russian drone attack on a Kherson suburb. Law enforcement has initiated a criminal investigation into this war crime.

The RMA reported that 4 people were injured in a russian drone attack on Kindiika.

In the morning, russian forces attacked a 42-year-old resident of Kindiika by a drone. He was hospitalised with an explosive injury and a shrapnel wound to his arm.

Referring to the State Emergency Service, during the night, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on a house in Kherson, causing a fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 7 December, russian forces shelled 10 settlements in Kherson oblast, injuring 7 people and damaging 7 private houses.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade received 2 ECOFLOW DELTA 2 charging stations and 10 VRK-8 UAVs with a day camera from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Forum of the Hungarian National Community of Ukraine was held in the oblast. To date, 142 agreements on cooperation between communities and municipalities of Zakarpattia oblast and Hungary have been concluded. This testifies to the close cooperation of the border areas and has a positive effect on the implementation of joint projects and activities in the humanitarian and economic spheres.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that emergency and rescue teams from Prykarpattia are helping to repair heating networks in Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk oblast, where over 500 houses remain without heat.

Lviv oblast

In honor of Serhii Varava, marksman of the Military Unit A4821, a memorial plaque was installed in his native gymnasium in the village of Bilyavtsi. On 10 June 2023, he was killed while performing a combat mission near the village of Khromov, Donetsk oblast.

Rivne oblast

In a charity fair in Korysta over UAH 22,000 was raised to support the military.

Ternopil oblast

Since the beginning of the year, 3,098 military personnel have received funds for the purchase of necessary equipment and technical means. This was reported in the Teropol city council.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

In Khmelnytskyi, 11 families of prisoners or missing persons received financial assistance. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 620,000.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi City Council reported that in the city, UAH 5.5m was allocated for monetary compensation for suitable housing for families whose relatives took part in hostilities on the territory of other states. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Ministry of Defense of Sweden reported that Sweden and Denmark will send 40 CV90 BMPs to Ukraine.

SpaceX received a contract from the Pentagon to connect 2,500 additional Starlink terminals in Ukraine to the protected Starshield network. Thanks to stronger encryption, a new signal is much more difficult to intercept or jam. In total, by 2025, 3,000 Starlink terminals with access to Starshield will be operational in Ukraine, providing critical support for the country’s defense. The value of the new contract is not disclosed, although it is known that the previous agreement for 500 terminals was concluded for about $40m.

Lithuania will give metal detectors worth €300,000 to Ukrainian schools. According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, since the beginning of the full-scale war, the agency has provided assistance to Ukraine in the amount of over €7m in the form of vehicles, weapons, security equipment, food and hygiene products, as well as humanitarian aid.
