War in Ukraine today: latest news, 05 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 833rd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy did not stop attacking along almost the entire front line, concentrating its efforts towards Kupiansk and Pokrovsk. By this time, the total number of enemy offensive and assault operations increased to 81. 

Towards Kharkiv, russian invaders tried to dislodge Ukrainian soldiers from their positions five times. Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled four enemy attacks, one in the vicinity of Vovchansk continues. The enemy lost 114 people in the direction today. Ukrainian defenders destroyed an armoured vehicle, a cannon, seven UAVs, six units of special equipment and four enemy ammunition depots.

Towards Kupiansk, the occupiers did not stop trying to put pressure on the defense of Ukrainian defenders. They are trying to improve their positions towards Druzheliubivka and Cherneshchyna – hostilities continue. In total, the invaders increased the number of assault operations towards Kupiansk to 12. 10 attacks have already been repelled. As of now, the enemy has lost 86 people killed and wounded, three russian armoured combat vehicles and a car have been destroyed. 

Towards Lyman, there were seven enemy attacks. Now the invaders continue to press in Serebrianka forest – hostilities continue there in four locations. Another battle is going on near Nevske.

Towards Pokrovsk, the situation remains the hottest. By this time, the number of enemy attacks here has increased to 19. Russian terrorists continue to exert pressure most actively in the area of Sokil. They suffer losses in manpower, making 354 people. In addition, Ukrainian soldiers destroyed a tank, three armoured personnel carriers, seven guns, a ground drone and a car. Another 13 units of various military equipment of the invaders were damaged. 

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy is pressing in the areas of Mala Tokmachka and Shcherbaky. There were five enemy attacks repelled.

In other directions, the situation has not changed significantly. 

Units of the Defense Forces courageously restrain the occupiers’ attempts to advance deep into the territory of Ukraine, inflicting fire damage on the enemy.

Prosecutor General Andrii Kostin says that prosecutors have identified 2200 victims who were tortured in russian captivity. Videos of abuse of Ukrainian prisoners that are circulating online are only part of the kremlin’s criminal strategy. More than 2200 Ukrainian defenders have been recognized as victims in proceedings regarding their stay in captivity. More than 500 of them testified about the use of physical violence against them during interrogations, including torture with electric shocks. 

After analysing every building across Ukraine that was damaged or destroyed after the russian attack in two years, the conclusion is that this is a huge area of about 210,000 buildings located on a rugged front line 800 miles long and beyond. After the end of the war, in many cities, people will have nothing to return to.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy used about 40 multiple rocket launchers in Kharkiv oblast yesterday. Vovchansk, Lyptsi and Staryi Saltiv communities were under the attack. Kupiansk community was hit by 4 KAB bombs.

At 11:22pm, russians attacked Kozacha Lopan village of Derhachiv community. The shelling damaged three houses and a car.

At 5:40pm, russians attacked Kamianka village of Izium community, Izium region. A woman was injured as a result of tripping over a PFM-1 Butterfly mine.

At 5:28pm, russians attacked Yurchenkove village of Vovchansk community, Chuhuiv region. As a result of the shelling, a house, an outbuilding and a garage burned.

At 5:10pm, russians attacked Vovchansk. A car was on fire and a man injured as a result of the shelling.  

At 5pm, russians attacked Kucherivka village of Petropavlivka community, Kupiansk region. As a result of the shelling, a feed store and outbuildings of a pig farm were burning.

At 5pm, russians attacked Vovchansk. A woman was injured as a result of an FPV drone dropping a munition.

At 3:45pm, russians attacked Zarichne village of Staryi Saltiv community, Chuhuiv region, and the territory of the recreation centre. Three one-storey wooden houses, a 2-storey building and a dining room caught on fire.

At 3:30pm, russians attacked Staryi Saltiv village of Staryi Saltiv community, Chuhuiv region. They shelled a recreation centre. There were no casualties.

At 2:30pm, russians attacked Yurchenkove village of Vovchansk community, Chuhuiv region. A house and an outbuilding were destroyed by a direct hit.

At 12pm, russians attacked Vovchanski Khutory village of Chuhuiv region. A man was injured as a result of the shelling.

In the oblast, 5 forest fires are being extinguished on a total area of more than 3,000 hectares, of which 4 fires have been contained on an area of 23 hectares. In total, more than 100 people and over 30 pieces of equipment are involved in the extinguishing of the fires.

One combat engagement continues towards Kharkiv.

The number of combat engagements increased to 13 towards Kupiansk. Five attacks were successfully repelled by our troops, 8 more are ongoing near Synkivka, Novoselivka, Novoiehorivka and Stelmakhivka.

The Defence Council will consider a decision to forcibly evacuate families with children from Oleksandrivka, Tymofiivka and Vidrodzhenivsk of Zolochiv community, as these settlements are close to the border with russia and suffer from enemy shelling on a daily basis.

The situation with fires in the forests caused by enemy shelling is complicated. Firefighting is complicated by a high mine danger for rescuers. The main task is to protect nearby settlements from the fire.

Donetsk oblast

The press service of Donetsk police reported that the day before, explosions occurred in 10 settlements: Kostiantynivka, Kurakhove, Lyman, Sloviansk, Chasiv Yar, Zhelanne, Kurakhivka, Vesele, Vovche and Lysivka.

24 civilian objects were destroyed, including 19 residential buildings, cars and critical infrastructure.

The invaders dropped an UMPB D-30SN bomb on Kostiantynivka, injuring a man and damaging 9 private houses and three cars.

In Sloviansk, a rocket hit damaged a private house.

Also russian troops shelled Lyman using artillery, damaging 6 private houses.

The White Angels crew evacuated a family with a 5-year-old girl from the shelled Drobysheve. Two residents were killed during the latest shelling of the village. The body of one was collected in fragments, the other was knocked into a building and buried under its rubble. The police, together with the State Emergency Service, cleared the rubble and removed the body. The White Angel police crew also helped two injured women and took them to hospital.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, towards Kupiansk, the situation remains tense. The invaders attacked there 14 times, specifically, near Stelmakhivka, Novoiehorivka and Nevske.

Yesterday 92 invaders were either killed or injured. Two armoured combat vehicles, a vehicle and an enemy UAV were destroyed.

Towards Lyman, russian troops unsuccessfully stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders from Kreminna. The invaders’ attempt to approach Bilohorivka towards Siversk also failed.  

Nevske suffers from shelling on a daily basis. Yesterday the village was hit at least 10 times. The enemy used cannon artillery, mortars and multiple rocket launchers.

Stelmakhivka, Kuzemivka and Makiivka were also in the enemy’s crosshairs. Also russians launched an airstrike near Kuzemivka.

Stateless persons of the russian federation were allowed to live in the territory of the so-called “lpr” until 31 December 2024 on the basis of their documents. After that, they will be recognised as foreigners and have the right to apply for a residence permit. Compulsory passportisation has failed. Earlier, it was determined that Ukrainians could live in these territories without russian-type documents only until 1 July. After that, the invaders threatened with deportation.

The invaders recorded soil drought under winter wheat crops in Novopskov, Bilokurakyne and Bilovodsk regions. In Bilovodsk region, productive moisture reserves at a depth of 20cm decreased from 7 to 5mm, and at a depth of 1m – to 57mm. In some areas, moisture reserves at a 1m depth are only 4 mm. Local experts also note the weak formation of productive organs, drying of leaves and stems.

Earlier it was reported that the so-called “lpr” lost 7% of its future harvest due to the cold snap in May, according to official figures alone. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of grain continue to be exported to the regions of russia. According to Starobilsk residents, the elevator is working at full capacity. The invaders process up to 1,000 tonnes of grain there every day. Luhansk oblast is on the verge of famine.

Yesterday a 62-year-old woman was evacuated from Nevske and today her house was completely destroyed by a guided aerial bomb. There is nothing left of the house.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the command of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the training was held in Kyiv with the participation of local military units (subdivisions) of the defence forces grouping.

At the expense of the city budget, 10 warrants for apartments were handed over. 9 of them went to combatants and 1 to the family of a fallen soldier. By the end of this year, 160 apartments will be put into operation, but 5,500 living soldiers and families of the fallen ones are still on the waiting list for housing.

On 5 June, children who died as a result of russia’s armed aggression were honoured in the courtyard of the Church of St Andrew the First-Called in Bucha. According to Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, decorative angels and bells were hung on the trees as a symbol of the killed children’s voices.

Explosive ordnance disposal took place in Bila Tserkva district.

Zhytomyr oblast

The All Ukraine NGO, in cooperation with the international charitable foundation CNEWA and Kyiv Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, has begun rebuilding 8 houses destroyed by a russian air strike on 6 March 2022. According to Ihor Yesin, Head of the social protection department of the Korosten City Council, the project is scheduled for completion in August 2024. 

In Zhytomyr oblast, electricity consumption limits are in place throughout the day due to a shortage in the power grid. The regional power company is applying hourly blackout schedules for industrial and residential consumers.

Sumy oblast

The RMA reported that at night and in the morning of 5 June, russians attacked the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast 12 times. 

Explosive experts seized the dangerous munition and destroyed it by detonating it on the spot.

A total of 36 explosions were recorded – attacks from mortars, artillery, grenade launchers, and the dropping of explosives from UAVs. Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Khotin, Bilopillia, Druzhbivka, Esman communities were shelled.

Over the past day, the russian military attacked Sumy oblast 36 times, with a total of 106 attacks recorded using various types of weapons. 12 border communities were under enemy fire: Yunakivka, Mykolaivka, Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Svesa, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, Velyka Pysarivka, Konotop, Nova Sloboda.

According to the RMA, a person was killed in Seredyna-Buda community as a result of shelling on 4 June. Two people were wounded in Khotin community and one in Konotop. 

The regional police reported that seven private residential buildings, two garages, an outbuilding, and a warehouse of an enterprise were damaged by russian strikes in Sumy oblast on 4 June.

The regional police reported that the other day, during a russian attack, the Ukrainian Air Defence Forces landed an attack drone. It crashed in one of the settlements of Sumy oblast and did not detonate. Explosion experts seized the dangerous munition and destroyed it by detonating it on the spot.

Bilopillia Mayor Yurii Zarko said that postmen started working on 4 June. Everyone who received pensions, subsidies or social payments at the post office will be able to receive them at their place of residence. The postmen will also accept necessary payments from the public. Ukrposhta branches will not operate in the town. Since April 2024, no Nova Poshta branches have been operating in Bilopillia and Vorozhba. A number of large grocery stores and household chemicals are also closed.

Rockada Charitable Foundation engineer Oleksii Sakhno informed that in 2024, with the support of UNHCR, 100 houses in Sumy oblast damaged by the full-scale invasion are planned for repair. The Rockada Charitable Foundation plans to provide construction materials for another 300 houses for IDPs. 

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that over the past day, russian troops attacked 10 border villages in Chernihiv oblast. A total of 87 explosions were recorded. The enemy fired at the territory of Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk and Horodnia communities with mortars, cannon artillery, FPV drones, and dropped explosives from UAVs. 

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the RMA, stated that the environment of Chernihiv oblast is suffering because of the war, with losses in the region exceeding UAH 25bn. Despite this, last year the nature reserve fund of Chernihiv oblast increased by 213.5 hectares, and this year – by another 289.46 hectares.

Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office announced the sentencing to 11 years in prison of a russian military officer who shot a car with civilians in Chernihiv oblast. In March 2022, a family with a minor child was travelling in their car from Desnianka village towards Chernihiv. At a checkpoint near the exit from the village, a 20-year-old russian soldier opened fire with an automatic weapon in the direction of the car. As a result of the shelling, one of the passengers was injured.

Egils Helmanis, Head of Ogre Regional Council, announced that 26 vehicles, including off-road vehicles, minibuses and buggies, were handed over to Chernihiv oblast military. This is the help from Latvian city Ogre. In total, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the community of Ogre has donated more than 90 vehicles to the Ukrainian military.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

At night, 4 enemy shaheds were shot down by air defence forces over the oblast. One in Dnipro, one in Nikopol region, and two more – in Kryvyi Rih. In the evening, the enemy hit Nikopol with a kamikaze drone, and in the morning they launched 3 more drones and shelled the city with artillery. 5 private homes, three outbuildings, an infrastructure facility and a power line were damaged.

There were about 15 attacks in Nikopol region. The occupiers used kamikaze drones and shelled the area with artillery. The region’s centre was hit the hardest. Two men, aged 48 and 24, were injured in the attack. They were provided with all the necessary medical care. A multi-storey building, 16 private houses, an administrative building, a library, shops, a canteen, and a religious institution were damaged. The drones’ hits set cars on fire, and the fire was quickly extinguished by rescuers. 4 outbuildings, 4 buildings that are not in use, a greenhouse, garages, several cars, a bus, a forklift, a gas pipeline and power lines were hit. The enemy also attacked Myrove and Pokrovsk communities.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Over the past few days, it has become known that defenders from Vinnytsia oblast have been killed. They are Volodymyr Yukhymenko, Yurii Yanovych, Leonid Koval, Vasyl Soloviov-Kutsenko, Valerii Shmyhol, Anatolii Okovytyi, Serhii Babyn, Valerii Liashenko, Volodymyr Chervinskyi, Vadym Shevchuk, Viktor Samsoniuk, Andrii Kobets and Oleksandr Karpus. 

Kirovohrad oblast

Kirovohrad oblast is organising first aid training for IDPs. The training is free of charge and open to everyone. They are organised by the Clean Slate NGO.

Poltava oblast

Filip Pronin, Head of the RMA, reported that an industrial facility in Poltava oblast was hit by a russian army attack. A fire broke out, covering an area of 800 sq m. Emergency workers extinguished the fire. One man was injured and refused hospitalisation. 

Oleksandr Kanibolotskyi, a 64-year-old resident of Opishne, completed a bicycle ride and raised UAH 1.6m for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The man had cycled through five oblasts. In total, he covered more than 1,000km. The collection will last until June 15.

Cherkasy oblast

Olha Voskobii, a volunteer, reported that Cherkasy-based Center for Army Assistance is weaving camouflage nets and kikimoras for Ukrainian soldiers. Currently, there are not enough hands to do this, so everyone is encouraged to join in. They ask for up to ten nets from the frontline. Currently, the Center for Helping the Army employs 70 people, who are constantly changing. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday the occupiers attacked Zaporizhzhia oblast 440 times. The enemy carried out an airstrike on Shyroke (Polohy region). 192 UAVs of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Novoandriivka. 15 MLRS shellings hit Huliaipole, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka and Levadne. 232 artillery shellings were carried out on the territories of Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne and Malynivka. There were seven reports of residential property destruction.

Traffic for vehicles on the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station dam has been restored. The traffic is now open for passenger cars and shuttle taxis, which can travel in one lane in each direction with a speed limit of 30km/h.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the night of 5 June, air defence forces destroyed six Shahed 131/136 drones in Mykolaiv oblast. One private house was completely destroyed in the territory of Buzke community’s dacha cooperative as a result of the falling debris from a downed enemy UAV. About ten more private houses and two cars were damaged.

Yesterday, 4 June, at 1:44pm, the enemy struck Kutsurub community with an FPV kamikaze drone. There were no casualties.

The Alley of Heroes was opened in Bashtanka. The Alley of Glory features portraits of servicemen who were killed fighting for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine during the russo-Ukrainian war since 2014. This includes 51 residents of Bashtanka territorial community.

Odesa oblast

On 5 June, around 5pm, the russian armed forces launched a missile strike on civilian infrastructure in Odesa oblast. The enemy targeted tourist infrastructure facilities in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi region. The inspection is ongoing, and the full list of destruction and damages is being clarified.

Environmentalists have calculated the environmental damage caused by the russian missile strike on warehouse facilities in Odesa oblast on 17 May. State inspectors examined the sites of the shelling and found land contamination with metal fragments and construction debris covering a total area of nearly 10,000 sq m. The damage was estimated at over UAH 190m.

The press service of Odesa City Council reported that a residential building at 2B Preobrazhenska Street in Odesa, which was damaged during a missile attack on the city on the night of 23 July, 2023, has been restored. The 19th-century building had its walls and upper-floor ceilings destroyed, as well as its roof, windows, and doors. The destroyed structures were dismantled, the roof and damaged support structures were removed, and new support structures, ceilings, and the roof of the third floor were built. A total of UAH 3.54m was spent on the repairs.

Kherson oblast

Today, the russian army attacked the village of Inhulets. During the distribution of humanitarian aid, two men were hit by the enemy’s strike. The injured were taken to the hospital, where medical examinations and assistance are being provided.

In the afternoon, russians attacked Tsentralnyi district of Kherson. A direct hit by a russian shell on a shop caused damage to the roof and the trading hall.

Yesterday, russians attacked Antonivka, Sadove, Inzhenerne, Bilozerka, Oleksandrivka, Veletenske, Tokarivka, Dniprovsk, Honcharne, Shyroka Balka, Novotiahynka, Beryslav, Shliakhove, Krupytsia, Tiahynka, Zolota Balka, Mykhailivka, Lviv, Arkhanhelske, Chervonyi Maiak, Kachkarivka, and the city of Kherson. The police recorded damage to 28 objects: three apartment buildings, eleven private houses, a dormitory, an office building, two shops, a café, five cars, two buses, a gas pipeline, and a farm structure. One person was killed, and eight others were injured due to russian aggression.

During the night drone attack, air defence forces destroyed four Shahed-131/136 strike UAVs over Kherson oblast.

Confirmed enemy losses in the past day include 156 personnel and 21 units of weapons and military equipment. A field supply buildup, a firing position, two dugouts, three observation posts, a command post, and a UAV control centre were destroyed.

Activists of the Yellow Ribbon movement report that the russians have intensified searches and pressure on the local population on the temporarily occupied part of the left bank of Kherson oblast.They check phones and read messages.

This week, the Proliska. Kryvyi Rih humanitarian centre started repairing damaged houses in the village of Rakivka. Experts repaired roofs, windows, and doors for ten families whose homes were affected by shelling.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council presented state awards to the relatives of military personnel who gave their lives in the war with russia. Junior sergeant Serhii Davydchuk, soldiers Mykola Blyzniuk, Anatolii Panasiuk, Dmytro Honcharuk and Andrii Kis were awarded with III degree Orders of Courage (posthumously).

Zakarpattia oblast

Uzhhorod City Council held a meeting of the Coordinating Council on IDPs. They discussed improving the health of IDP children.

The oblast received a humanitarian cargo with medical equipment and medicines for hospitals, including, ventilators, syringe pumps and anti-inflammatory drugs needed to treat both civilian patients and wounded military personnel, worth almost €1m, from Hungary.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that the community sent 30 FPV drones to the National Guard of Ukraine Rubizh brigade.

As part of the Care for the Hero’s Family project, relatives of fallen soldiers have the opportunity to participate in the rehabilitation program. The other day, the 2nd such program started for 12 project participants. For 3 weeks, wives, mothers and children are being hosted by the U Generala recreation complex in Dolyna region.

Lviv oblast

In Lviv oblast, the air alarm signal was announced 29 times during May. The total duration of air alarms was 18 hours and 54 minutes.

Lviv community allocated UAH 95m from the budget in one month. Purchased 1,146 drones/UAVs, 12 vehicles and 12 EW systems worth UAH 63m for the military. And UAH 31.9m was provided as a subsidy so that the military themselves could purchase the necessary equipment.

Rivne oblast

This year, 74 families, total 204 people, from Donetsk oblast were already evacuated to Rivne oblast. New trains are expected. Since March, the oblast has received 6 evacuation trains from Donetsk oblast.

Ternopil oblast

The oblast sent a remote antenna, a signal amplifier for DJI Mavic quadcopters, propellers for DJI Mavic quadcopter, etc., thanks to the funds raised from the RUN 4 VICTORY race, to the 105th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council, thanks to the over-execution of the revenue part of the budget, allocated an additional UAH 85m to help the Defense Forces. UAH 3.2m was allocated for the replacement of windows in high-rise buildings that were damaged by the attack of the russian in March. In addition, they will replace the windows on the stairwells with co-financing with the residents.

Chernivtsi oblast

In Chernivtsi, they said goodbye to Hero Felix Baranitskyi. In 2014-2015, Felix took part in an anti-terrorist operation, and since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he volunteered to defend the Motherland. He was killed on 13 April during the defence of Chasiv Yar. The fighter was awarded with the award of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Golden Cross by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Lithuania will allocate almost €10m for the rehabilitation of the Ukrainian military. The planned duration of the project implementation is 18 months.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, arrived on an official visit to Qatar. There, he will hold talks with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the country.

Andrii Sybiha, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, held political consultations with Sun Weidong, Deputy Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China. They discussed how China can contribute to achieving peace in Ukraine.

Martin Dvorak, Minister of European Affairs of the Government of the Czech Republic, initiated the writing of a letter with an appeal to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union to promote progress in the negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU. It is noted that the letter initiated by the Czech Minister to Aji Lyabib, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, was signed by Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden and Finland.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, met in an online format with heads of the world’s leading universities and educational associations. They discussed the Peace Formula proposed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, ways of its implementation and preparation for the Global Peace Summit.

Famous American actresses Hilary Swank and Alyssa Milano, star of the television series All Women are Witches, became ambassadors of the fundraising platform UNITED24. They will focus their efforts on supporting the Education and Science and Medical assistance directions. Both actresses recorded video messages in which they expressed support for Ukraine.
