War in Ukraine today: latest news, 05 December, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 1016th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The situation on the front line remains tense. Ukrainian defenders continue to actively oppose the russian aggressor, inflicting losses in manpower and equipment.

On 5 December, there were 106 combat clashes.

Border settlements continue to suffer from artillery shelling from the territory of the russian federation. Krasnopillia, Pokrovka and Demianivka in Sumy oblast were affected by artillery fire. In addition, the enemy launched an airstrike with a GAB on Hlukhiv.

Towards Kharkiv, russian occupiers launched an airstrike with a GAB near Kruhle.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian soldiers were repelling three enemy attacks near Nova Kruhliakivka and Lozova, one attack was repelled. Airstrikes were carried out by NARs, and Petropavlivka and Lozova were subjected to airstrikes.

Towards Lyman, the invading army carried out 12 assault and offensive actions near Hrekivka, Tverdokhlibove, Yampolivka, Terny, Zarichne, Torske and in Serebrianka forest, four clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders are repelling the enemy assault near Chasiv Yar.

Towards Toretsk, the defense forces repelled one attack near Toretsk.

Towards Pokrovsk, the invaders made 26 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Dachenske, Zhovte, Pushkine, Novotroitske, Shevchenko, and Novopustinka. The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelling 18 enemy attacks, 8 clashes are still ongoing. Enemy losses are being specified.

Towards Kurakhove, the invaders carried out 35 attacks near Berestki, Stary Terni, Zori, Sontsivka, Kurakhove, Dalne Yelizavetivka, Hanivka, Romanivka and Uspenivka, ten clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Vremivka, Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy attacks fifteen times near the settlements of Kostiantynopolske, Rozlyv, Sukhi Yali, Makarivka and Novodarivka, ten of which are still ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv,  an enemy attack was repelled near Novodanylivka.

Towards Siversk, Huliaypole and Kherson, the enemy has not carried out any active actions.

In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled seven enemy attacks, and fighting is continuing in four more locations.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, informs that at least 6 mayors of Ukrainian cities and heads of communities remain in russian captivity. They are among thousands of Ukrainians who are not guilty of anything, but are in captivity.

Daria Zarivna, Advisor to the Head of the Presidential Office and the Operational Director of the Bring Kids Back UA initiative, says that Ukraine is looking for 20,000 children who were forcibly deported by russia. However, their real number may be much higher.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that russian troops reduced the number of attacks and assaults on the eastern front on 4 December. Most of the fighting continues to take place towards Pokrovsk and Kurakhove, 41 incidents per day.  

The occupiers tried to break through the defences and storm towards Vremivka 19 times, where, according to DeepState analysts, the 48th Brigade cleared the village of Novyi Komar the day before.  

 Russian troops did not attack towards Siversk and Kramatorsk fronts on 4 December.  

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff said  that towards Kharkiv, russian invaders launched an air strike with a Ukrainian air defence system near Kruhle.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian troops repelled three attacks near Nova Kruhliakivka and Lozova, one attack was repelled as of 4pm. Petropavlivka and Lozova were hit by NARs.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv community, said that around 2pm, a russian drone, the type of which has not yet been identified, struck Ivashky. Two houses, outbuildings and power lines were damaged in the village.

Yesterday at 6:25 pm, russians shelled Kupiansk. Private houses were damaged as a result of the shelling by the KAB. A 40-year-old man was killed. Two women aged 40 and 69 with acute stress reaction.

At 4pm, Oleksandrivka village of Bohodukhiv region was under russian shelling. A private house was partially damaged as a result of an attack by an unidentified UAV.

At 11:50am, russians shelled Kupiansk. A 65-year-old man was wounded when an FPV drone hit a civilian car at the entrance to the town and was hospitalised.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked five times near Vovchansk and Hlyboke. One firefight is still ongoing. Veterynarne was hit by an air strike.

Towards Kupiansk, the aggressor tried to advance to our positions near Kucherivka, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Pershotravneve, Zelenyi Hai and Lozova 15 times during the day. All enemy attacks were repelled by the Defence Forces. The occupiers’ aviation also struck Dvorichna with KABs, while Lozova and Petropavlivka were attacked with NARs.

During the day, 72 people were evacuated from Borova and Kupiansk directions.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria, Arad Benkö, to discuss the demining of the region’s territories. Currently, 574,000 hectares of agricultural land in the region are potentially contaminated, or 30%. As of today, more than 29,000 hectares of land have been cleared of contamination by Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, the State Emergency Service, specialised services and international experts. The meeting also discussed the energy security of the region and the decentralisation of the energy system.

The installation of a 5 MW gas modular boiler house in Kharkiv oblast is nearing completion, which Ukraine received from UNICEF. Two more units with a capacity of 2 MW and 20 MW are also planned. This will help provide heat supply for 4,000 residents of the community. We have deployed 913 resilience centres in the region. Heat, water and wastewater companies in the region have more than 1,200 generators of various capacities. Heat suppliers are equipped with 39 cogeneration units.

The government has allocated UAH 2.7bn to create safe educational facilities in Kharkiv oblast.

Donetsk oblast

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the Khortytsia military unit, reported that Novyi Komar village towards Vremivka is under the control of the Defence Forces, ‘the enemy has been driven out of there. On 4 December, the DeepState analytical project and the 48th Separate Assault Battalion reported that russian troops had been pushed out of Novyi Komar and the village had been cleared.

Police recorded 3,085 enemy attacks on the frontline and residential areas yesterday.

Five settlements were under attack: Kostiantynivka, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Shevchenko and Berestok. 21 civilian objects were damaged, including 5 residential buildings.

The occupiers dropped 2 FAB-250 bombs on Kostiantynivka, wounding three civilians, damaging 4 apartment buildings and 2 other buildings, a car wash, a cafe, power lines and a gas pipeline.

In Shevchenko village, a civilian was wounded in the shelling and a private house was damaged.

Pokrovsk came under a drone attack, damaging 2 trucks.

The enemy attacked Berestok with two FAB-250 bombs, causing damage to the territory of the enterprise.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, informed that approximately 3,000 people remain in Myrnohrad, about 300 people are still in Chasiv Yar, 11,593 people are in Pokrovsk, including 26 children, 500 people are in Toretsk, and about 500 people are in Kurakhove.

Mykola Koval, Head of the press service of the 14th Ivan Bohun Operational Brigade of the Chervona Kalyna National Guard, said that towards Pokrovsk, the russian army is sending fewer soldiers to conduct assaults compared to late summer and early autumn.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday the enemy conducted assault operations near Hrekivka and Makiivka. According to the Regional Military Administration, the invaders conducted 106 attacks on Ukrainian settlements and fortifications. These included air and artillery strikes. The enemy used 98 unmanned aerial vehicles.

The occupation authorities of the so-called “lpr” declare their intention to invest rub 43bn in the coal industry of the region. This amount should be used primarily to “ensure safe working conditions” in the mines that are currently shut down. However, there are no specific deadlines for project implementation or first results of the activities of russian investors, who were handed over a number of coal mining enterprises in February. Instead, negative consequences have already been observed: layoffs, delayed salary payments, and dismantling of equipment.

In the temporarily occupied territories of Luhansk oblast, in particular around Stanytsia Luhanska, 4,300 hectares of forest have been destroyed. Representatives of the local forestry sector explain this phenomenon only by the increase in air temperature, avoiding other reasons. No mention is made of the lack of preventive measures, the lack of resources to extinguish fires, staffing problems and the failed disaster relief campaign by the occupation administration. It is known that during large-scale fires in settlements near Stanytsia Luhanska, residential buildings caught fire, and rescue services did not respond to calls. Locals whose homes burned down were mostly forced to evacuate on their own.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that three private houses and a power line were damaged as a result of a nighttime UAV attack in Kyiv oblast. Air defence forces were deployed. The wreckage of the downed enemy targets fell in two districts. There were no civilian casualties or hits to critical or residential infrastructure.

On 4 December, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Alain Berset, Council of Europe Secretary General, in Kyiv. They discussed the need to establish a special tribunal for the crime of the russian aggression against Ukraine, the release of prisoners and the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported by russia.

The regional military administration reported that the Danish Minister for European Affairs and a delegation of MEPs visited Kyiv oblast. The guests visited the Angels of Victory memorial in the village of Moshchun, to honour the defenders of Kyiv oblast. They were given a tour of the memorial sites and were introduced to the history of the oblast’s liberation narrated with help of the latest technology.

The SES reported that rescuers from different oblasts of Ukraine conducted fire and tactical training in the Kyiv metro. Representatives of the State Paramilitary Mining Rescue (Emergency Rescue) Detachment, the State Emergency Service of Kyiv, Dnipro, Ivano-Frankivsk and Kharkiv oblasts, as well as future rescuers from educational institutions in Lviv and Cherkasy joined the unique training.

The RMA reported that the construction of a radiation shelter for the Patriot Lyceum is underway in Boryspil. The structure is designed to accommodate 500 people at a time. The work is being carried out at the expense of the Fund for the Elimination of the Consequences of Armed Aggression.

 Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that the Kyiv community has delivered another batch of aid to the soldiers of the 4th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine. Another 1,000 night FPV drones with thermal cameras were sent to one of the hottest spots on the frontline to help the military destroy the enemy.

 The special commission of Kyiv City Council reported that busts of Soviet military and statesmen were dismantled in Kyiv’s Park of Glory. So far, 117 such objects or elements have been removed from the public space of the capital as part of decommunisation and de-russification. Another 87 have not yet been dismantled, of which 12 still have monument protection status.

On International Volunteer Day, Kyiv will host the 13th Civil Society Development Forum. The event is dedicated to the unity and resilience of Ukrainians in the face of a great war. The event will bring together representatives of NGOs, charities and local governments, as well as civil society activists, volunteers, international partners, donors and government officials.

Zhytomyr oblast

At night in Zhytomyr oblast, during an air raid that lasted more than 5 hours, explosions were heard – air defence forces were working on the Shahed drones used by the russian army to attack oblast. At 00:37, the Ukrainian Air Force informed that a UAV was being spotted in the north, at 03:04 they warned that the UAV was still moving through Zhytomyr oblast, and at 03:51 they said that the UAV was moving towards Zhytomyr.

In the morning, Oleksii Sheketa, Chairman of the Board of Zhytomyroblenerho, informed that the russian army attack had caused damage to the power grids, which were powered through backup lines. Repair work is underway.

 Zhytomyr Regional State Administration reported that, thanks to cooperation with the Republic of Estonia, a number of important projects aimed at improving the quality of education in the oblast have been implemented. In particular, Estonia has donated 20 school buses and 50 modern laptops, which provide training and access to educational resources. As part of the reconstruction programme, the first modular kindergarten for 160 children was built in Ovruch. 15 employees of the preschool attended special training courses in the Republic of Estonia aimed at providing psychological assistance to children affected by the hostilities, as well as basic knowledge of fire and mine safety.

Sumy oblast

Nadiia Vailo, Head of Hlukhiv community, reported that on 5 December, around 12pm, the russian army carried out strikes by two guided aerial bombs (GABs) on Hlukhiv in Sumy oblast. The russian army targeted a residential area, by one bomb landing near a garage. Ten houses suffered damage, with windows and doors blown out by the blast wave, and one house sustained roof damage.

During night and morning, russians carried out 3 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 6 explosions. The attacks targeted Krasnopillia and Svesa communities.

On 4 Desember, russians carried out 79 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 155 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Svesa, and Znob-Novhorodske communities.

Velyka Pysarivka community: russians dropped 3 mines. There were also explosive devices dropped from UAVs (8 explosions), shelling by MLRS (30 explosions), a kamikaze drone strike (1 explosion), and artillery shelling (5 explosions).

Bilopillia community: the enemy struck by mortars (6 explosions), FPV-drones (3 explosions).

Krasnopillia community: strikes from the territory of the russian federation were carried out by FPV-drones (5 explosions), explosive devices dropped from UAVs (17 explosions), an air strike from a helicopter gunship (NAR) (5 explosions), mortar shelling (19 explosions), artillery shelling (11 explosions), and launches of GAB (3 explosions).

Khotin community: strikes by FPV-drones (22 explosions), shelling by barrel artillery (11 explosions) were recorded.

Znob-Novhorod community: russians dropped 2 mines on the territory of the community.

Svesa community: the enemy fired mortars (1 explosion).

Esman community: anFPV-drone attack (3 explosions).

Sumy RMA reported that forty-three heroes from Sumy oblast have been posthumously awarded state honors. The head of Sumy RMA, Volodymyr Artiukh, presented honorary awards and medals to the families and loved ones of the fallen soldiers.

Chernihiv oblast

According to Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, on the night of 5 December, russian forces attacked Koriukivskyi region in Chernihiv oblast using strike drones. The attack damaged a house and a barn on the property. The house sustained damage to its roof, windows, and doors. No reports of injuries have been received.

On 4 Desember russian army attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast. In total 36 explosions were recorded.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community:

– 2 explosions (probably by FPV-drones) in Krasnyi Khutir village;

– 2 explosions (probably by artillery) in Kamin village.

Semenivka community:

– 4 explosions (probably by FPV-drones) in Kostobobriv village – a car was damaged;

– 8 explosions (probably dropping explosive devices from UAVs) in Yanzhulivka village;

– 8 explosions (probably by 120mm mortar) and 7 explosions (probably dropping explosive devices from UAVs) in Hremiachka village;

– 3 explosions (probably by 82mm mortar) in Halahanivka village.

Snovsk community:

– 2 explosions (probably an explosive device dropped from a UAV) in Yeline village.

No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.

In Chernihiv, a russian military officer was sentenced in absentia for ordering the seizure and looting of a farm in Shestovytsia village, Chernihiv oblast. Chernihiv Region Court sentenced him to 12 years of imprisonment in absentia.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of RMA, reported that at night, Nikopol region was attacked several times. The strikes targeted the regional centre, Pokrov and Marhanets communities. Damage was reported to 4 private houses, an agricultural enterprise, an outbuilding, vehicles, power lines and a gas pipeline.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​According to Vinnytsia City Council, supplies from Vinnytsia oblast were prepared for the 120th Territorial Defence Brigade, including 200 FPV drones, 20 Mavic 3T drones, 20 stoves and 200 candles. For the 22nd Separate Mechanised Brigade, 200 FPV drones, 10 Mavic 3T drones, 10 stoves and 100 candles were delivered. Also, a National Guard unit received 100 FPV drones, 10 Mavic 3T drones, amplifiers for UAV operators, body cameras for mobile fire groups and 3 infrared sensors.

The russian aggression has caused environmental damage in Vinnytsia oblast amounting to nearly UAH 80m.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kirovohrad oblast, students from the Central Ukrainian State University named after Volodymyr Vynnychenko transformed shell casings, grenade launcher tubes and ammunition boxes into art objects. Their creations were showcased at an exhibition marking International Volunteer Day.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, informed that in Cherkasy oblast, defenders destroyed 6 enemy UAVs overnight.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 4 December, a 78-year-old woman was injured as a result of a russian attack on Zaporizhzhia oblast.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on Huliaipole and Orikhiv fronts, no russian offensive actions were conducted on 4 December, but they actively used aviation.

Ivan Fedorov stated that russian forces carried out 389 strikes on 10 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast on 4 December. Among the targets were Komyshuvakha, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria and Novodarivka, with 236 UAVs of various types used in the attacks.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, reported that a man was killed in Voznesensk as a result of a missile strike.

On 4 December, russian forces twice targeted the waters of Ochakiv community by FPV drones. There were no injuries reported.

russian drones attacked Kutsurub community 3 times yesterday. There were no casualties or injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

According to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am on 5 December, 2 russian ships capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total salvo capacity of up to 12 missiles, were on patrol in the Black Sea.

As reported by the State Environmental Inspectorate, russian attacks on Odesa on 9 and 10 November caused damage to private properties. Environmental damage was estimated at UAH 26.3m.

Kherson oblast

According to the RMA, russian forces shelled Tomyna Balka in Kherson oblast, injuring a man in his yard. He sustained explosive and cranial injuries, a concussion and shrapnel wounds to his legs.

russian drones also attacked Antonivka near Kherson, wounding a 51-year-old man with explosive injuries, a concussion and shrapnel wounds.

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, said that in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, russian troops dropped explosives from a drone in the morning, injuring a 53-year-old man.

The RMA stated that a 34-year-old man from Kherson suffered explosive injuries and a hand wound during yesterday’s russian attack. He sought medical help today, received necessary treatment and was prescribed outpatient care.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, said that on 4 December 2 people were killed and 10 injured in Kherson oblast as a result of russian shelling. Russian forces targeted 21 settlements in the oblast, damaging gas pipelines, 5 private houses and vehicles.

According to the State Emergency Service, 4 fires broke out in Kherson oblast due to russian shelling. Fires affected a house, outbuildings and a vehicle. Despite the threat posed by russian UAVs, firefighters extinguished the blazes.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of charitable foundations and organizations that provide humanitarian assistance to the residents of Volyn oblast. A Council of benefactors will be created under Volyn RMA.

HUB VETERAN received laptops, wireless mice and headphones from the Colombian Campaign to Ban Landmines CF.

Lutsk community sent 10 VRK-8 UAVs with a day camera to the 124th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade.

Zakarpattia oblast

Families of Ivan Butsk and Volodymyr Vudmaska ​​were awarded with the III degree For Courage Order. Both were assistants at the Regional Clinical Center of Neurosurgery and Neurology.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 18 DJI MAVIC 3 Pro quadcopters; 6 means of radio-electronic warfare Zuzulka and 6 directional antennas with a rotating mechanism worth over UAH 2.6m to the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade. These are the funds that were raised at the VI charity auction.

Lviv oblast

In the village of Kavsko, Strii community, 4 commemorative plaques were opened to fallen defenders Petar Maslianyk, Andrii Harkot, Nazarii Bilokur and Volodymyr Malyi. They were installed on the facade of the gymnasium where Heroes studied.

The RMA reported that Serhii Havryliuk, Ivan Duma, Oleksii Pomirko and Petro Nutskovskyi were awarded with the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously).

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, sets of warm clothes, namely, winter pants, a jacket, thermal underwear, socks, a sweater and shoes, are issued for IDP children from the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Ternopil oblast

An extraordinary meeting of the Regional Commission on Technological and Environmental Safety and Emergency Situations was held in Ternopil oblast. The reason was damage to the energy infrastructure of Ternopil and the oblast caused by enemy drones that night. As a result of the attack, the centralized supply of water and heat in the regional center was temporarily stopped. During the blackout, critical infrastructure facilities functioned thanks to generators.

Ternopil City Council reported that 8 defenders will receive funds for treatment and rehabilitation. Since the beginning of the year, 267 wounded defenders have received funds for treatment and rehabilitation.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The oblast sent 3 mobile bath and laundry complexes, EW devices, a thermal imager and FPV-drones to the military.

Chernivtsi oblast

A new volunteer and youth space was opened in Novodnistrovsk. Thanks to the 2024 Grant in the amount of UAH 485,000, it was possible to create a modern space for active youth. The project was implemented with the support of the Danish Red Cross within the framework of the BraVo program and Novodnistrovsk Community.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Antt Hakkanen, Minister of Defense of Finland, announced that the country will provide Ukraine with a new aid package worth EUR 25m. The total value of the defense materials that Finland has supplied to Ukraine is currently EUR 2.3bn. This package contains, among other things, winter equipment for the Ukrainian army.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Alain Berse, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. They discussed the need to create a special tribunal for the crime of aggression.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, held a phone conversation with Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General. Support for Ukraine was discussed.
