War in Ukraine today: latest news, 01 January 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1408  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

On 1 January, the total number of combat clashes along the entire front line was 45.

The invaders did not stop striking at border settlements. Malushyne, Bila Bereza, Ryzhivka, Novovasylivka, Shalyhyne, Ukrainy, Vovkivka, Kucherivka in Sumy oblast were under enemy artillery fire.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, the enemy carried out one airstrike, dropped a guided aerial bomb, and also carried out 44 shelling of the positions of our troops and settlements.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy attacked the fortifications of Ukrainian defenders near Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, there were no offensive actions.

Towards Lyman, the aggressor attacked eight times in the vicinity of the settlements of Novovodiane, Myrne, Kolodiazhi, Zarichne and Yampol. Four combat engagements are currently ongoing.

Towards Slaviansk and Kramatorsk, the enemy did not conduct offensive operations.

Towards Kostiantynivka, the enemy attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops in the vicinity of Oleksandro-Shultynye, Pleshchyivka, Rusyn Yar, Yablunivka, Shcherbynivka and Torske. The defense forces have already repelled nine enemy attacks.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders nine times in the vicinity of the settlements of Nove Shakhove, Rodynske, Chervonyi Lyman, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske and Novopavlivka.

Towards Oleksandrivka, Ukrainian defenders repelled seven enemy attacks in the vicinity of the settlements of Vorone, Vyshneve and Rybne; another combat engagement is ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, there were eight combat clashes near Huliaipole, one of which is currently ongoing. Enemy aircraft struck the settlements of Zaliznychne, Sviatopetrivka, Verkhnia Tersa, Huliaipole, Tsvitkove, Pryluky and Varvarivka.

Towards Orikhiv, there were no combat clashes.

Towards Kherson, Ukrainian units repelled two enemy assaults near Antonivskyi bridge.

 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff reported that russian troops attacked the fortifications of Ukrainian defenders near Vovchansk.

 

There were 120 combat clashes in the oblast.

 

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders five times near the settlement of Vovchansk and towards Obukhivka and Dovhenke.

 

Towards Kupiansk, enemy units carried out six assault operations, trying to break through to the positions of Ukrainian defenders towards Novoplatonivka, Bohuslavka, Kurylivka and Hlushkivka.

 

The park’s founder Oleksandr Feldman says that wintering premises for predators and birds were destroyed in the eco-park near Kharkiv, which was hit by a russian anti-aircraft missile. At this time, it is known that lions were injured and birds killed.

 

City mayor Ihor Terekhov, reports that a russian V2U drone hit the industrial zone of Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. No people were injured

 

Over the past day, 8 settlements of Kharkiv oblast were hit by enemy strikes.

 

As a result of shelling in the village of Odnorobivka of Zolochiv community, a 76-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman were injured.

 

The enemy actively used various types of weapons:

▪️2 GABs;

▪️10 UAVs of the Geran-2 type;

▪️2 UAVs of the Molniya type;

▪️1 FPV drone;

▪️6 UAVs (type is being determined).

 

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

▪️a car was damaged in Bohodukhiv region (the village of Odnorobivka);

▪️2 private houses were damaged in Kupiansk region (the village Velykyi Burluk);

▪️In Kharkiv region, power grids were damaged (the village Cherkaski Tyshky), a private house (Prudianka);

▪️In Lozova region, power grids were damaged (Tykhopollia);

▪️In Chuhuyiv region, a private house was damaged ( Staryi Saltiv), an apartment building ( Kurylivka).

 

The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 13 people per day. A total of 16,057 people have been registered at the Point since the start of work.

 

Donetsk oblast

Yulia Stepaniuk, Spokeswoman for the 117th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade, reports that the russian military has not made any progress in the area of ​​responsibility of the 117th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade: air bombs are decreasing, but drone attacks are increasing. For the first time, the Ukrainian military evacuated a wounded soldier using a special forces vehicle.

 

Towards Pokrovsk, Molodetsk remains under the control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The settlement is being defended by soldiers from the Spartan brigade as reported by the Vostok group of forces.

 

Maksym Belousov, Head of the communications department of the 60th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade, says that on New Year’s Eve, russian troops did not reduce their activity towards Lyman. The intensity of russian drones and shelling remained at the usual level, with no signs of celebration or weakening. The only dynamics that Ukrainian soldiers have recorded recently is an increase in attempts at mechanized breakthroughs. The russians are increasingly trying to use infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers to quickly bring troops closer to Ukrainian defenders, instead of moving in small infantry groups. However, the equipment is blown up in remotely placed minefields or destroyed by Ukrainian FPV drones and operators of neighboring units.

 

 The General Staff said that  russian troops attacked 16 times near Kostyantynivka and 33 battles took place towards Pokrovsk on December 31, 2025.

 

Towards Kostiantynivka, battles were fought near the settlements of Oleksandro-Shultyne, Yablunivka, Pleshchiivka, Shcherbynivka, Torske, Rusyn Yar and towards Sofiivka, Ivanopillia.

 

Towards Lyman, the russian army attacked 11 times; towards Slaviansk, Ukrainian defenders stopped one attempt by the occupiers to advance, and towards Kramatorsk, there were no battles.

 

Anastasia Medvedeva, Spokeswoman for the regional prosecutor’s office, says that on January 1, a 52-year-old man was wounded in the shelling of Kostiantynivka by an FPV drone at 12:00.

 

On December 31, there were 1,593 enemy strikes on the front line and residential sector.

 

The cities of Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, and the villages of Hannivka and Mayachka were under fire.

 

7 civilian objects were destroyed, including 2 residential buildings.

 

In Kostiantynivka, russian troops killed a civilian man using an FPV drone.

 

In Kramatorsk, an enemy Molniya-2 UAV damaged a business center.

 

The occupiers directed an FPV drone at Druzhkivka – damaging a high-rise building.

 

Drone attacks in Sloviansk damaged a utility building and a vehicle, and in Mykolaivka – critical infrastructure.

 

In Maiachka, Cherkasy community, a private house was damaged by a Lancet UAV.

 

Luhansk oblast

The russian army tried to storm towards Lyman and Sloviansk 12 times, checking the defenses near six settlements and used unmanned systems twice and opened fire with mortars 12 times.

In the so-called “lpr” in 2026, electricity tariffs will be increased twice: after the January and October revisions, the cost of a kWh will increase to 67%.

In Starobilshchyna, the occupiers continue to “nationalize” housing: they have added houses and offices in the city and surrounding villages to the new list. If the owners do not confirm their rights with russian-style documents, they plan to transfer the real estate to “municipal” ownership at the end of January.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, reported that in 2025 air raid alerts were announced in the capital 510 times. According to him, the enemy launched 2,556 UAVs, 122 cruise missiles, and 88 ballistic missiles at Kyiv. Over the year, more than 1,200 residential buildings, 119 educational institutions, and 39 hospitals were damaged — over 3,600 facilities in total. the russian forces injured 945 city residents, including 67 children. 171 people were killed as a result of enemy attacks, 13 of them children.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko reported that 13 units of Ukrainian defenders operating in the Kharkiv direction and the Donbas received New Year assistance from the capital’s community. The fighters were provided with 29,270 drones of various types, tractors, excavators, 12 pickup trucks, electronic warfare systems, drone detectors, various types of radios, and a mobile tire service station.

The Kyiv City State Administration reported that as of January 1, a personalized medical support project for veterans has been launched in Kyiv’s municipal hospitals. The initiative aims to simplify access to medical services for defenders, eliminate bureaucratic barriers, and make the patient pathway as fast and clear as possible.

The Kyiv City State Administration also informed that over two months, more than 200 specialists at Kyiv’s Stress Resilience Center have acquired practical skills for working with children and families of military personnel who have experienced loss. Training sessions are planned to continue from January through March.

According to the Regional Military Administration, New Year’s Eve, the first batch of 260 Parisian buses arrived in Kyiv oblast, which the region had agreed on with the Île-de-France region in November. Thirty buses will be deployed on routes in the Bucha, Brovary, Bila Tserkva, Vyshhorod, Vyshneve, Vasylkiv, and Boyarka communities, where municipal transport services have been established. The buses are equipped with everything necessary for safe and comfortable travel.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to the Donor Recruitment Department, the Zhytomyr Regional Blood Center has received a new vehicle for mobile blood collection. The vehicle was purchased for the blood center by the CBG Charity Foundation. It will be used to transport the mobile team’s staff and components of collected whole blood.

In Zhytomyr, students of the local choreography workshop “La Danza” presented a charity performance titled “In Search of the Christmas Star” during the Christmas and New Year holidays. UAH 80,000 raised during the cultural event will be donated to soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Sumy oblast

In the Northern Slobozhanskyi direction, the Russian army is primarily using infantry forces without armored vehicles, according to the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Magura.” Russian troops have reduced the use of “Molniya” drones and Shahed UAVs to attack Ukrainian positions, however FPV drone strikes continue.

On the night of January 1, the Russian army struck the Konotop community, reported Mayor Artem Semenikhin. There were no casualties. According to the Regional Military Administration, non-residential buildings were damaged.

In Konotop, Russian forces struck the railway, reported Oleksii Kuleba, Vice Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities and Territories Development. Freight railcars were damaged at the city’s station.

Over the course of the day, from the morning of December 31 to the morning of January 1, Russian forces carried out 75 shelling attacks on 37 settlements across 17 territorial communities in the region. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Sumy, Shostka, and Konotop districts. The enemy used mortars, artillery, MLRS, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Over the day, air raid alerts lasted 16 hours and 33 minutes in the region.

Consequences of Russian shelling in Sumy Oblast as of the morning of January 1:

  • In the Boromlia community, a 25-year-old man was injured as a result of a UAV attack;

  • In the Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house was damaged;

  • In the Mykolaivka rural community, a civilian infrastructure facility and a private house were damaged;

  • In the Sumy community, a civilian infrastructure facility, a private house, and two passenger cars were damaged;

  • In the Konotop community, non-residential buildings were damaged;

  • In the Znob-Novhorodske community, a private house and adjacent outbuildings were destroyed, and a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;

  • In the Shalyhyne community, a private residential house was destroyed.

Over the past day, 50 people were evacuated from border communities by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and civil society organizations.

Chernihiv oblast

Over the three months of the most intense attacks in Chernihiv Oblast, more than 1,600 Russian attack drones were shot down, reported Vyacheslav Chaus, Head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration.

On New Year’s night, hits were recorded within the city limits of Novhorod-Siverskyi in the border area of Chernihiv Oblast, reported Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of the District Military Administration. At 23:20, the enemy attacked a residential area in the city center with two Geran-2 attack UAVs. The fire at the impact site was extinguished.

On the evening of December 31, Russian forces struck residential buildings in the village of Chaikyne, Novhorod-Siverskyi community, with an FPV drone. As a result of the strike, a private house belonging to local residents was damaged.

During the day on December 31, the enemy attacked an energy facility in the Koriukivka district with an FPV drone, reported Head of the Chernihiv RMA Vyacheslav Chaus.

Over the course of December 31, Russian troops attacked three border communities in Chernihiv Oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling with mortars (22 explosions) and tube artillery (9 explosions), struck with Molniya-type UAVs (1 explosion), FPV drones (18 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (3 explosions). Ten settlements came under enemy fire, reported the Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment.

Over the past 2025, Chernihiv Oblast allocated UAH 1.2 billion from the regional and community budgets to support the Security and Defense Forces.

Over the year, 66 additional veteran support specialists were added, bringing the total to 83 professionals helping demobilized service members adapt to civilian life as comfortably as possible.

With the support of the Ministry of Health and Direct Relief, Chernihiv Oblast is piloting a project to establish six outpatient rehabilitation departments.

In educational institutions across the region, 40 shelters were built or renovated over the past year, reported Head of the Chernihiv RMA Vyacheslav Chaus.

As of December 2025, about 70,000 internally displaced persons reside in Chernihiv Oblast—nearly 9.5 times more than before the start of the full-scale invasion, according to the Regional Military Administration.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA, reported that the occupiers continued to attack Nikopol, Myrove, Marhanetsk, Chervonohryhorivka and Pokrovske communities by drones and artillery. 4 private houses, 2 outbuildings, a vehicle, gas pipelines and solar panels were damaged. During the day, the occupiers shelled the oblast by drones and artillery, targeting Nikopol, Marhanetsk, Myrove and Pokrovske communities.

Vinnytsia oblast

The 9th festive Vinnytsia New Year Run took place in Vinnytsia. More than 400 participants aged from 3 to 70 covered distances ranging from 200m to 10km. Runners took part in the event wearing New Year costumes and raised funds in support of the Ukrainian military.

Cherkasy oblast

National Guard serviceman from Cherkasy, Oleksii Symonenko, who was killed in action, was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. During shelling, the defender shielded his comrades with his own body at the cost of his life.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 31 December, the Defence Forces of Ukraine repelled 30 russian attacks in Huliaipole and Oleksandrivska regions. Combat engagements took place in Huliaipole, Solodke, Bilohiria and Rybne regions.

Based on the information provided by the National Police, a 65-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman were evacuated from frontline areas of Polohy and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, stated that on 31 December, the russian military carried out more than 600 strikes on 24 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. In particular, 425 UAVs of various types, mostly FPV drones, attacked Zaporizhzhia, Hryhorivske, Dolynske, Richne, Shevchenkivske, Chervonodniprovka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Solodke, Shcherbaky, Varvarivka, Zelene, Bilohiria and Dorozhnianka. 9 people were injured as a result of russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia, its oblast and Polohy region.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that on 31 December, the russian military attacked Kutsurub community by an FPV drone. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

Referring to Odesa RMA, today, russian forces carried out drone strikes on Izmail and Odesa ports. Equipment, vehicles, berths and machinery were damaged.

The Regional Military Administration reported that in Odesa, a 2-storey residential building was damaged as a result of night-time attacks. One of the drones hit an apartment on the 17th floor of a high-rise building. No detonation occurred and no injuries were reported. The night attacks damaged a 24-storey building, windows and roofs of 2 two-storey houses, the facade and glazing of a private house.

Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa RMA, informed that a few minutes before the New Year, russia again attacked the energy infrastructure of Odesa oblast. A fire broke out at one of the facilities. As a result of the attack, disruptions in electricity supply were recorded at critical enterprises ensuring the functioning of Odesa.

Kherson oblast

According to Kherson Regional Military Administration, from early morning, russian forces attacked a high-rise building in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson by a strike UAV. An enemy drone flew into an apartment where an 87-year-old woman was present. She sustained a concussion, blast injury and a closed craniocerebral injury. An ambulance crew transported the victim to hospital in a condition of moderate severity, where she received all necessary medical assistance.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The oblast was under massive attack by Shahed-type UAVs all night. In total, several dozen enemy targets again attacked critical infrastructure facilities in Volyn oblast. Some of Shaheds were shot down. At the same time, there were also hits, which resulted in fires, which are still being extinguished in Lutsk and Kovel region. All relevant services are working at the arrival points. The elimination of the consequences is ongoing. According to Volynyoblenerho, 103,341 subscribers have currently been disconnected. There are no injuries or deaths.

Zakarpattia oblast

During 2025, Zakarpattia Customs sent UAH 25bn 269.5m in customs payments to the State Budget of Ukraine. This is UAH 4bn 257.3m over the same period in 2024.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council has decided to make one-time payments (UAH 50,000) to military personnel with amputees.

Lviv oblast

The Vulyk volunteer initiative delivered 3 cars to soldiers of the 103rd Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces named after Metropolitan Andrii Sheptytskyi, the 225th Separate Assault Regiment, the 2nd Self-Propelled Artillery Battery of the Self-Propelled Artillery Division of the 153rd Separate Mechanized Brigade. Drones, medicines and other things were sent to Azov.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast survived another enemy attack. Thanks to the work of the military, an enemy air target was destroyed. People and infrastructure in the region were not harmed.

Ternopil oblast

42 defenders from Ternopil community will receive a one-time cash grant to provide equipment and technical means. In total, 3,243 soldiers received cash assistance for equipment in 2025.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

An enemy drone was spotted in the airspace of Shepetivskyi region, which was later lost in the airspace..

Chernivtsi oblast

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine,  awarded soldiers killed in battles for Ukraine. The III degree For Courage Order  was posthumously awarded to senior soldier Vitalii Shcherbanovych.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Japan disbursed 8.8bn yen in grant funds, equivalent to approximately EUR 47.7m, under Phase 4 of the Ukraine Emergency Recovery Program. The funds will be used for humanitarian demining; energy infrastructure maintenance; water supply system restoration; regional public infrastructure development; public health and safety projects.

Two more Patriot air defense systems arrived in Ukraine from Germany.
