What happened in Ukraine today:
Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:
russian invaders continue to assault the positions of Ukrainian defenders. Since the beginning of the day, 71 combat engagements have been recorded.
Border settlements are suffering from artillery shelling launched from the territory of the Russian Federation, in particular Novovasylivka and Stara Huta in the Sumy region. The community of Stara Huta was also struck by an airstrike.
Ukrainian defenders repelled four enemy attacks in the Northern-Slobozhanske and Kursk directions, with one battle still ongoing. The enemy also carried out three airstrikes, dropped five guided bombs (KABs), and launched 115 shelling attacks, including one with multiple launch rocket systems.
In the Southern-Slobozhanske direction, the enemy attacked Ukrainian defensive positions four times near Hlyboke, Vovchansk, Krasne Pershe, and towards Doroshivka; two battles are still ongoing.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled four attacks on positions near Kupiansk and Nova Kruhliakivka. Another attack is still ongoing.
In the Lyman direction, the invading army launched 17 assaults near Novomykhailivka, Karpivka, Kolodiazi, and towards Shandryholove, Stavky, Dronivka, and Serebrianka. Defense Forces successfully stopped 10 enemy attempts to advance; fighting is still in progress.
In the Siversk direction, the enemy tried four times to break through near Hryhorivka and towards Serebrianka, Vyiimka, and Fedorivka but was repelled.
In the Kramatorsk direction, the enemy unsuccessfully attacked Defense Forces positions twice, attempting to advance towards Stupochky.
In the Toretsk direction, the invaders launched five assaults today near Toretsk and towards Berestok and Stepanivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, since the beginning of the day, the occupiers have attempted 24 times to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions near Nykonorivka, Novoeconomichne, Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novoukrainka, and towards Volodymyrivka, Rodynske, Pokrovsk, and Novopavlivka. The Defense Forces repelled 23 attacks and continue to hold the line, with one battle still ongoing.
In the Novopavlivka direction, the enemy attacked nine times near Shevchenko and towards Filiia, Iskra, and Oleksandrohrad. Three combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Huliaipole direction, enemy aircraft struck Bilohiria.
In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy carried out an airstrike on Preobrazhenka.
In the Prydniprovske direction, the enemy unsuccessfully attacked Ukrainian defenders’ positions once.
No significant changes have been recorded on other parts of the frontline.
Seventy percent, or about 3.5 million Ukrainian children, lack access to basic needs due to the war. Before the full-scale invasion, in 2021, this figure was only 18%. Material deprivation is devastating children’s development, health, and future opportunities. In addition, since the start of the full-scale invasion, 2,786 children have been killed or injured. Millions of women and children have been forced to leave the country, and the birth rate has dropped by 35%. Attacks on infrastructure are worsening the crisis, UNICEF reported.
Since 2022, Russia has stolen 15 million tons of grain from Ukraine. This year alone, the occupiers plan to harvest about 1 million tons of grain, mostly wheat, in the Luhansk region. Ukrainian intelligence reports that Ukrainian wheat is being mixed with Russian grain in Black Sea ports and exported. This was reported by Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Taras Vysotskyi.
Sumy oblast
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in North Slobozhanske and Kursk sectors, Ukrainian units repelled five attacks over the past day. Enemy forces also carried out 6 air strikes, dropping 11 guided bombs, and launched 179 attacks, including 5 by multiple launch rocket systems.
Yurii Bova, Head of Trostianets, said that in town, around a hundred residents were left without water supply on 26 August due to a russian missile strike. The city’s water intake facility was completely destroyed. Water delivery has been organised for residents. “A water intake cannot be built in one or two months. It’s completely destroyed,” the Mayor added. According to him, four apartment buildings were also damaged. No injuries were reported. Emergency services are working on site, providing assistance to residents.
The Regional Administration informed that three people were injured in a russian UAV strike on civilian infrastructure in Shostka community shortly after 1am.. Three men aged 35, 44, and 48 were hospitalised. Critical infrastructure is operating on backup power, and communication disruptions are being experienced. Resilience Centres have been deployed, and recovery works are ongoing.
After 3am., russians carried out a massive drone attack on Sumy and Bezdrivka communities. Fires broke out as a result of the strikes. Residential and non-residential buildings were damaged. Two female residents of a village in Bezdrivka community sought medical assistance: a 51-year-old woman was hospitalised, while a 63-year-old woman received treatment at the scene.
In Putyvl community, non-residential premises and equipment were damaged by drone strikes.
From the morning of 25 August to the morning of 26 August, russian forces carried out 90 attacks on 31 settlements in 15 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (almost 30 strikes), dropped VOG grenades from UAVs (up to 10 strikes), and also launched FPV-drones and UAVs across Sumy oblast.
Damaged and destroyed civilian infrastructure facilities:
- In Nova Slobidka community, an educational institution was damaged;
- In Seredyna-Buda community, an administrative building was damaged;
- In Sumy community, private houses, farm buildings, and non-residential facilities were damaged;
- In Znob-Novhorodske community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
- In Verkhnia Syrovatka community, a non-residential building was damaged;
- In Shostka community, a civilian infrastructure facility and a residential house were damaged;
- In Bezdrivka community, private houses were damaged;
- In Hlukhiv community, a non-residential building was damaged.
Over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and non-governmental organisations, evacuated 4 people from border communities.
In Konotop, the book “When They Don’t Knock on the Door: 25 Stories of russian Occupation” was presented. The publication includes testimonies of Ukrainians from Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Luhansk, Kherson, and Chernihiv oblasts who experienced occupation since 2014.
Chernihiv oblast
North Operational Command reported that on 25 August, a russian drone damaged a petrol station in Novhorod-Siverskyi community on Chernihiv border.
During the day, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar and tube artillery shelling, struck by FPV drones, and dropped explosive devices from UAVs. A total of 47 strikes were recorded across 10 settlements, the Chernihiv Border Detachment reported.
In Chernihiv region, police explosives experts discovered the warhead of a russian strike drone that had been downed by Ukraine’s Defence Forces. The downed UAV was found in open terrain near one of the settlements of Nizhyn district, the National Police in Chernihiv region reported.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Air defence forces were active in the oblast. Ukrainian defenders shot down 2 enemy drones.
It was loud in Synelnykove region, where drones struck Mykolaivka, Mezhova and Pokrov communities. A fire broke out, damaging the territory of an agricultural enterprise, a private house and a car. In the evening, the occupiers continued attacking Nikopol region. They launched a drone and shelled Marhanets community by artillery.
Nikopol and Synelnykove regions came under enemy fire. In Synelnykove region, a 65-year-old woman was injured. The enemy attacked Mezhova and Slovianka communities, damaging 4 private houses, a gas station and a gas pipeline. In Nikopol region, the occupiers carried out about 40 strikes by artillery and drones. They targeted the regional centre, Pokrov, Chervonohryhorivka, Marhanets and Myrove communities. 2 private houses, 2 farm buildings and 2 cars were damaged.
Vinnytsia oblast
Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that in Vinnytsia, the team of the Interregional Coordination Humanitarian Headquarters has started handing over 30 SUVs to different units of the Defence Forces.
Kirovohrad oblast
In Zvirivka village, Novoukrainka community, a memorial ceremony was held for soldier Volodymyr Kirdiashkin, who was killed in Kharkiv oblast on 12 May 2024. He had been considered missing for over a year.
In Kropyvnytskyi, a memorial ceremony took place for fallen serviceman Anatolii Kucherenko, who had been listed as missing since November 2024. The 32-year-old soldier was killed on 4 November 2024, in Vovchenka village, Kurakhiv community, Pokrovsk region, Donetsk oblast.
It became known that serviceman Oleksandr Pavlichenko from Sokolivske community, Kropyvnytskyi region, was released from russian captivity. He returned home during the prisoner exchange on 24 August after spending 3 years and 4 months in captivity. He is now 41 years old.
Poltava oblast
14 memorial plaques honoring fallen soldiers are planned to be installed in Poltava community. They will be placed on educational institutions, high-rise buildings and an enterprise.
Serviceman Andrii Honcharenko from Yabluneve village, Orzhytsia community, was freed from russian captivity after spending more than 3 years in detention.
Cherkasy oblast
Defender from Uman, Bashtechky community, soldier Volodymyr Antonenko, was posthumously awarded the medal For Military Service by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
In Cherkasy, a memorial ceremony was held for fallen defender Vadym Sliusarenko, who died from a drone strike near Dnipropetrovsk oblast.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that a 25-year-old woman was injured as a result of a russian attack on Zaporizhzhia oblast.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 25 August, Defence Forces repelled 3 russian attacks on Orikhiv and Huliaipole regions. The clashes took place near Plavni, Pavlivka and Malynivka.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 25 August, the russian military carried out 480 strikes on 17 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. In particular, 11 airstrikes targeted Kushuhum, Malokaterynivka, Lukianivske, Huliaipole, Omelnyk, Poltavka, Malynivka, Bilohiria and Zaliznychne.
Mykolaiv oblast
On 25 August, russian forces attacked 3 communities in Mykolaiv oblast by drones, damaging residential houses and an educational facility.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, informed that since last evening, high activity of russian drones has been recorded along the M-14 highway (Kherson-Mykolaiv). The russian forces are deliberately targeting civilian vehicles, urging residents to avoid traveling this route unless absolutely necessary.
Odesa oblast
Based on the information provided by Odesa RMA, this evening, a reconnaissance drone was spotted in the airspace over Odesa. There were no casualties or damage recorded.
Kherson oblast
Yaroslav Shanko, Head of the CMA, reported that russian troops attacked a high-rise building by a drone in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson. Information on casualties and damage is being clarified.

The police reported that explosive experts neutralised PFM-1 butterfly mines that russian forces remotely scattered on a street in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. The mines were collected and destroyed by controlled detonation.
According to the CMA, around noon today, a russian drone attacked a 50-year-old man in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. He sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his right forearm.
The RMA reported that at 10:30am, russian forces shelled Mykilske village in Kherson oblast by artillery. A 55-year-old woman suffered a blast injury, concussion and head contusion.
The CMA informed that in the morning, russian forces attacked Antonivka by a drone. An employee of a municipal utility company, a 59-year-old man, was injured and hospitalised.
Around 7am, russian troops used a drone to attack a car on the road between Klapaia and Chornobaivka in Kherson oblast. A 47-year-old medical director and a 38-year-old doctor from a healthcare facility were wounded. Both sustained blast injuries.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that on 25 August, russian forces shelled 32 settlements across Kherson oblast. 4 people were injured. 2 high-rise buildings, 15 private houses, a gas pipeline and vehicles were damaged.

Volyn oblast
A ceremonial unveiling of a memorial plaque to Valerii Hrybchuk, former student of the institution, sniper of the Mechanized Company of the 60th Separate Mechanized Ingulets Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, will take place on the territory of Rozhyshchensky Lyceum № 4. He was killed on 6 December, 2023.
Zakarpattia oblast
The Charity Dinner of Generations was held in Uzhhorod – a special meeting that brought together children of fallen defenders and lonely elderly people at one table. The children participated in the preparation and serving of dishes, and the older guests shared their memories and life wisdom with them.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Semen Batsal, soldier of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, was awarded with the For Honor and Victory Order.
Lviv oblast
A production center for prosthetics and rehabilitation of defense personnel will be launched at the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University in the fall. The project is being implemented within the framework of a large Grant Agreement between the governments of France and Ukraine in the field of healthcare for over EUR 51m.
Rivne oblast
The oblast received another evacuation train. The 5th in a week. 19 people arrived from Donetsk oblast. Mostly elderly. One of the women is 98 years old. All of them were placed in communities of Dubno district.
Ternopil oblast
The 35th Separate Rifle Battalion received 4 Ecoflow DELTA Pro 3 charging stations thanks to the Defense Capability program in accordance with the military’s request.
The Stronger Together European Union project is launching in Ternopil. Delegations from partner cities have arrived: Viljandi from Estonia, Valmiera from Latvia and Kretinga from Lithuania.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
The military received 2 electronic warfare systems worth almost UAH 1m, purchased with funds from Khmelnytskyi city budget.
Chernivtsi oblast
Roman Klichuk, Chernivtsi Mayor, met with Vadym Shvets, commander of the Military Unit of the National Guard of Ukraine. They discussed the urgent needs of the military.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Denys Shmyhal, Ukrainian Defense Minister, announced that Ukraine and Lithuania have agreed on joint weapons production.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with a delegation of the international parliamentary network United for Ukraine. They discussed the future of Ukraine, security guarantees, results of the meetings in Washington and separately how frozen russian assets can be used to restore Ukraine.
