It has been the 1171st day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders.

On 9 May, there were 80 combat clashes on the frontline.

Border settlements suffered from cynical shelling from the territory of the russian federation, in particular: Arkhipivka, Mykolaivka in Chernihiv oblast; Marchikhina Buda, Bila Bereza, Ulanov, Baranivka, Kucherivka in Sumy oblast; Boyiaro-Lezhachi, Doroshivka in Sumy oblast were hit by guided bombs.

Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian defenders repelled two attacks near Vovchansk, and combat clashes are currently ongoing.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked nine times near Lypove and in the vicinity of Hrekivka, Novyi Myr, and Zelena Dolyna. One combat clash is still ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders repelled three enemy attempts to advance in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar, Bila Hora and Kurdiumivka; four more clashes are ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked 10 times in the vicinity of Dachne, Diliivka, Shcherbynivka and Toretsk, five battles are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers made 18 attempts to push UKrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Oleksandropil, Novotoretske, Promyn, Yelyzavetivka, Dachenske, Zvirove, Udachne, Kotliarivka and in the vicinity of Novomykolaivka and Troitske. The defense forces are holding back the enemy’s onslaught and repelled 13 attacks, five clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy attacked 18 times near the settlements of Bahatyr, Konstantinopol, Odradne, Rivnopol, Novosilka, Vilne Pole, Pryvilne and in the vicinity of Novopol, Zelene Pole. Eleven clashes are ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy assaults in the vicinity of Mali Shcherbaky and Shcherbaky.

Towards Kherson, the enemy made four attempts to advance, fighting continues in three areas.

Towards Kupiansk, Siversk and Huliaipole, the aggressor did not conduct active offensive actions.

Towards Kursk, Ukrainian defenders repelled three russian attacks, four more clashes are ongoing. The enemy carried out 5 airstrikes, dropped a total of nine guided aerial bombs on the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements, and carried out 153 artillery attacks.

The situation on other fronts has not changed significantly.


Interfax-Ukraine informs that the President of Ukraine has imposed NSDC sanctions against 58 russian citizens and 74 companies, most of which are related to the russian defense-industrial complex. 

The IAEA press service reports that five power units are operating at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Four more are under maintenance, two of which are due to return to work in the near future.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

There were 193 combat clashes.

▪️Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian troops repelled four enemy attacks near Vovchansk.

▪️Towards Kupiansk, there were four attacks. Defense forces repelled enemy assault actions near Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Nova Kruhliakivka and in the vicinity of Novoosynove.

Shelling

Towards Kharkiv, 2 settlements in the region were hit by enemy strikes.

As a result of shelling in the village of Velyki Prokhody, Derhachi community, three people were injured, in the city of Kupiansk – two. In the village of Zarichne, Starosaltivka community, an 11-year-old boy was injured due to the explosion of an unknown object.

The enemy used 2 FPV drones in Kharkiv oblast. Cars were damaged in Kharkiv and Kupyansk regions.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The General Staff reported that on May 8, the russian army attacked 146 times in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. In particular, it increased the number of assaults towards Lyman to 27, the day before there were 24 battles, and towards Pokrovsk the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 10 more attacks than in the previous 24 hours — 71.

Towards Novopavlivka, the Defense Forces repelled 28 assaults.

A serviceman under the pseudonym Ahat from the 93rd separate mechanized brigade Kholodny Yar, which is fighting towards Kramatorsk, reports that russian troops continue to launch artillery strikes on positions and near Kostiantynivka.

According to the General Staff as of 22:00 on May 8, despite the “truce” declared by putin, since the beginning of May 8, the russian army attacked and stormed: 55 times towards Pokrovsk, 25 times towards Novopavlivka, 21 times towards Lyman, 7 times towards Toretsk, 5 times towards Siversky direction, and 6 battles were fought towards Kramatorsk.

In total, there were 154 battles on the frontline.

Luhansk oblast

russians launched assaults along the entire front line in Luhansk oblast. They attacked Ukrainian positions near Nadiia, Novoiehorivka, Hrekivka, and Bilohorivka. They opened fire from the artillery 19 times. In four cases, they used multiple launch rocket systems. 240 enemy drones were directed towards the Ukrainian defenders.

📌In June, the invaders are going to complete the construction of a military training center for youth in Luhansk. It is located in the captured premises of the V. Dahl State University, which was relocated from there in 2014. The main tasks of the training center are the implementation of military training programs. At the same time, about 300 cadets will be trained there for war. In addition, russians annually train more than 500 people in military affairs at the local branch of the Voin military and sports training center.

📌The so-called “Ministry of Digital Affairs of the lpr” is so unsure about the reliability of the local Internet and mobile communications that they decided to simply turn them off for today. They managed to inform the residents of Luhansk about this yesterday. They called for understanding towards the total control of the occupation authorities over the population.

Oleksiy Kharchenko, Head of the RMA, reports that the occupiers left Luhansk without mobile communications and the Internet on May 9.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that Kyiv oblast has 16 existing interregional partnership agreements. The region’s communities have 133 twin cities in 34 countries. Currently, the focus is on cooperation with the states of Washington and Utah in the United States, the Ile-de-France region in France, Tuscany in Italy, Buckinghamshire in the United Kingdom, and the Central Bohemian Region in the Czech Republic. Negotiations are also underway with German states to conclude a partnership.

Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the RMA, announced that Buzova, Bucha district, which was heavily damaged because of russian aggression, is being rebuilt. In Buzova secondary school, the work has been completed by 55%. At 17D Tsentralna Street, a four-storey residential building with 40 apartments is being restored and is scheduled to be commissioned in July. At 17E Tsentralna Street, a new 47-apartment apartment building is under construction and is scheduled to be completed in August.

The Ukrainian Women’s Guard conducted a tactical medicine training course for the staff of a pre-education institution in Kyiv. The course was based on the international MARCH protocol. The participants gained theoretical knowledge and practical skills in key aspects of life saving.

On 9 May, a photo exhibition ‘Deafening Silence’ opened on Mykhailivska Square in Kyiv. It features 12 stories about Ukrainian prisoners of war, held in russia, as well as their families. The exhibition is based on a study by Amnesty International Ukraine on violations of the rights of prisoners of war in russia.

On 10 May, in connection with the visit of foreign delegations to Kyiv and the holding of solemn and commemorative events, temporary traffic restrictions will be introduced on some central streets of the city.

Zhytomyr oblast

Novoguyva village council reported  that a special commission is working to record the extent of the damage in one of the villages of the Novohuyvynska community in Zhytomyr district at the site of a drone strike on 7 May, which was carried out by the russian military. As a result of the attack, fifteen private houses and five multi-storey buildings were damaged. This was by the . Teams have also been set up to help local residents overcome the consequences of the shelling.

A partner from Indiana, Steve Bowles, Executive Director of the Mission to Ukraine Charitable Foundation, visited Zhytomyr Oblast. According to Vitaliy Bunechko, head of the Zhytomyr Regional Humanitarian Hub, the meeting was dedicated to continuing cooperation and the partners’ readiness to join important projects, including ensuring effective interaction with communities, medical and social institutions, and educational institutions in oblast.

Sumy oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that as a result of an enemy airstrike on Manukhivka village in Nova Slobidka community, an 85-year-old woman was killed and a 49-year-old man was injured. russian forces attacked the village by guided aerial bombs (GABs) on 9 May at approximately 3:30pm. The attack also resulted in the destruction of two private houses.

Mykola Noha, the Mayor of Shostka, informed that as a result of an airstrike on Shostka, a man was injured, and an infrastructure facility and several cars were damaged. The enemy struck the city in the afternoon of 9 May.

According to Mykola Solodovnyk, Head of Richky community, in the evening of 8 May, the russian army struck civilian infrastructure in Richky village  by guided aerial bombs (GABs). As a result of the attack, a 63-year-old woman, who was walking on the street at the time, was killed. A security guard on night duty at a local enterprise was also injured. The strike damaged around 10 private houses, the village council building, a school, and storage facilities of a local agricultural enterprise.

Sumy Regional Military Administration on 9 May reported that while clearing the rubble of a house in the settlement of Shalyhyne, the body of a deceased local resident was discovered. According to the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the man likely died about a month ago as a result of enemy shelling. The house belonged to the deceased’s relatives, while he himself lived next door. The rubble could not be cleared earlier due to the continued threat of shelling.

The Regional Military Administration informed that during the day, from the morning of 8 May to the morning of 9 May, russian forces carried out 80 attacks on 21 settlements across 10 territorial communities in the oblast. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (more than 10 strikes), FPV-drones (over 10 strikes), and dropped VOG grenades from UAVs (nearly 30 strikes). The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. Additionally, the enemy launched two missile strikes on the territory of Hlukhiv community.

Due to russian shelling, five private houses were damaged in Nova Slobidka community, three in Hlukhiv community, and two in Yunakivka community. One private house was destroyed in Svesa community, while another private household was damaged, and fires broke out in four private houses in Seredyna-Buda community.

According to the Regional Military Administration, over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and non-governmental organisations from border communities, evacuated 186 people.

The Regional Police announced that the White Angels crew in Sumy evacuated a border resident along with her 12 dogs. The woman had remained in her border village as the only resident on her street. She refused to leave because she could not abandon her animals.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv border detachment reported that on 8 May, russian forces attacked two border villages in Semenivka community. In Yanzhulivka, three explosive devices were dropped from UAVs, while in Arkhypivka, four such devices were dropped, along with one FPV drone strike.

Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, Head of Chernihiv City Military Administration, issued an order banning mass events in the city from 9 to 11 May.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that in the evening and this morning, the occupiers continued to attack Nikopol region. They attacked with artillery and drones. They targeted the region centre, Myrove, Pokrovske, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities.

An 83-year-old man was injured in Chervonohryhorivka community. A fire broke out in Nikopol, setting fire to a garage and an outbuilding. Rescuers extinguished the fire. A moped was damaged. There are also 2 more private houses, an outbuilding and power lines in the area.

The enemy attacked Nikopol several times during the day. They used artillery and kamikaze drones. They targeted the district centre, Myrove, Pokrovske, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities. A private house and infrastructure were damaged.​

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kirovohrad oblast, defender Maksym Karpov from Ustynivka was paid the last tribute. He had been in captivity for almost a year.

Cherkasy oblast

Fallen Ukrainian defender Andrii Ivashuk was paid the last tribute in Cherkasy. He was killed in Donetsk oblast while performing a combat mission. Ivashuk Andrii served as a driver of an anti-tank missile system unit of a separate anti-tank battalion.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 8 May, towards Orikhiv, russian forces launched three attacks on Defence Forces positions, despite russia’s declared ‘ceasefire,’ which was supposedly set to last from the start of 8 May until midnight on 11 May. This was reported in the morning update of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 9 May. It was noted that russian troops attempted three assaults in the areas of Stepove and Shcherbakiv.

The Kastus Kalinouskyi Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Press Service reported that towards Zaporizhzhia, soldiers of the unit used FPV-drones to destroy a russian electronic warfare (EW) system. Several enemy soldiers were also eliminated.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine informed that towards Zaporizhzhia, three special forces soldiers of the Main Intelligence Directorate were captured during a reconnaissance and sabotage raid on russian positions. Their comrades rescued them using FPV-drones. The freed fighters of ‘Artan X’ returned with captured weapons and critical intelligence data. They are currently undergoing medical treatment.

According to the Regional Military Administration, on 9 May, russian forces struck a civilian vehicle by an FPV-drone in Zaporizhzhia region. As a result of the attack, a married couple — a 57-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman — were injured and hospitalised.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration said that on 9 May, the russian army attacked Bilenke and Malokaterynivka. As a result of a russian drone strike on Bilenke village, a 45-year-old man was injured. He has received the necessary medical assistance.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that on 8 May, russian forces shelled eight settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. As a result of an FPV-drone strike on a car in the frontline town of Prymorske, a woman was killed. At least nine reports have been received about the destruction and damage to apartments, private houses, and non-residential buildings.

Over the course of 8 May, the russian army carried out 220 strikes:

  • 150 drones of various modifications were used to attack Prymorske, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka.
  • 70 artillery strikes targeted Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka.

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is in contact with Ukraine and russia regarding the next rotation of the agency’s personnel at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. According to an IAEA press release from 8 May, the previous rotation took place through occupied Ukrainian territories under the escort of russian military forces. Additionally, the agency reported that the occupied nuclear plant lost power from its 330 kV backup transmission line on 7 May ‘as a result of military actions.’

The Regional Military Administration announced that in the centre of Zaporizhzhia, the first municipal veteran support space, ‘Veteran PRO,’ has been opened. This is a space where defenders and their families, as well as the families of fallen soldiers, can receive administrative and social services, as well as psychological support.

Mykolaiv oblast

Danish Refugee Council reported that in Partizanske village, major renovations are underway on the rural medical centre, which was damaged during combat. For now, medical services are being provided to villagers in the local council building. The project is being funded with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine.

Ivan Kukhta, Head of Snihurivka City Military Administration, informed that on the outskirts of Snihurivka, demining operations are ongoing. As of 8 May, work is being carried out near Cherkaska Street and from the double railway crossing to the intersection of the T-15-08 highway and the road to the village of Kobzartsi. Due to the demining activities and the disposal of explosive devices, the specified road sections present an increased danger.

Odesa oblast

The Ukrainian Navy reported that as of 6am on 9 May, four russian ships are present in the Black Sea, including three carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 14 missiles. There are no russian ships in the Azov Sea.

Hennadii Trukhanov, Odesa Mayor, informed that the apartment building on Yaroslav Mudryi Avenue in Odesa has been declared unsafe. On the night of 1 May, a russian drone struck the building, damaging its load-bearing structures. On 13 May, at an extraordinary session of the city council, deputies will decide on the amount of funding required for strengthening the structures and restoring the upper floors.

In Odesa, an exhibition about children’s dreams during the war — ‘(Not) Time for Dreams’ — was held at the Museum of Western and Eastern Art. According to the organisers, the initiative brought together children from Kherson living in frontline areas, children from the capital and western regions of Ukraine, as well as those who are in migration.

Kherson oblast

The Southern Defence Forces reported that on the first day of the ‘three-day ceasefire’ proposed by russia, russian forces launched five unsuccessful assaults on Ukrainian positions towards Prydniprovske. Meanwhile, over the past day, Ukrainian defenders eliminated 183 russian occupiers, destroyed three artillery systems, an anti-aircraft installation, 25 units of armoured and automotive equipment, two electronic warfare (EW) stations, three boats, four generators, two ammunition storage sites, 53 shelters, and two observation posts.

Kherson Regional Military Administration informed that around 6am, russian forces attacked a resident of Kherson by a drone. The man sustained severe injuries, including blast trauma and shrapnel wounds to his legs. The 60-year-old was hospitalised in critical condition.

According to the Regional Military Administration, on 8 May, russian forces dropped an explosive device from a drone on a resident of Novoraisk in Kherson oblast. As a result of the explosion, a 63-year-old man sustained blast trauma, as well as shrapnel injuries to his jaw and thigh. He was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

The Regional Military Administration reported that on 8 May, the russian army shelled 20 settlements in Kherson oblast. As a result of the strikes, one person was killed and another was injured. Additionally, an apartment building, three private houses, and several private vehicles were damaged.

On 8 May, the settlements of Antonivka, Sadove, Komyshany, Ponyativka, Naddnipryanske, Beryslav, Shlyakhove, Charivne, Berehove, Kizomys, Kozatske, Zmiivka, Lvove, Mykilske, Novovorontsovka, Novotiahynka, Odradokamianka, Sofiivka, Tyahynka, and  Kherson came under russian shelling and airstrikes.

The Regional Police informed that on 8 May, in Zmiivka, russian forces attacked a police service vehicle by a drone while officers were carrying out evacuation efforts. As a result of the explosive device being dropped, a 54-year-old local resident and two police officers were injured. Preliminary diagnoses indicate they all suffered concussions. Fortunately, there is currently no threat to their lives. The vehicle used for rescuing people was also damaged.

According to the Regional Military Administration, over the past week, sappers have cleared more than 1,700 hectares of land on the right bank of Kherson oblast. During this period, they cleared 84 hectares of land, 1,700 hectares of fields, 67 sites, and 0.9 hectares of water bodies; neutralising 1,195 explosive devices. In total, since the start of de-occupation, 66.9% of the right bank of the oblast has been demined.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Ihor Polishchuk, Mayor of Lutsk, met with mothers of the fallen (deceased) defenders of Ukraine in the Palace of Culture of the city. The event began with a minute of silence in honor of the fallen heroes, after which the mayor thanked the women for their sacrifice and noted that the feat of their children will forever remain in the history of Ukraine and the community.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Regional Council held a meeting with representatives of Slovakia. They discussed implementation of the Capsule of Hope: Forest Song of Learning humanitarian project. This project aims to create a safe space for the education and development of children from frontline areas who have lost the opportunity to receive education and were forced to leave their homes.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The Veteran PRO regional veteran space held a working meeting with public organizations that care for the families of Heroes and industry specialists. They discussed supporting families of fallen defenders and assisting in resolving urgent issues.

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 20 FPV drones to the 14th Brigade.

Lviv oblast

Lviv hosted over 40 highly respected delegations from the European Union and other countries. A meeting of the coalition of states War Crimes Group was held. This coalition is working on the creation of a special tribunal for the top leadership of russia for crimes against the people in our state and destruction. The tribunal will be created in The Hague. It will take place under the auspices of the Council of Europe. In addition, the European Union announced its intention to provide almost EUR 1.9bn in military assistance to Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

Last year, Luhansk Regional Oncology Clinic provided over 66,000 services. The facility, as a reminder, was relocated to Sarny region.

During a meeting with veterans in Ostroh community, the creation of a Veterans Council was initiated. This will be a space for mutual support, representation of interests, and direct dialogue with local authorities.

Ternopil oblast

The 128th Territorial Defense Brigade received 50 FPV drones from Ternopil community.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The 144th action Return the Heroes from Captivity / Find the Missing was held in Khmelnytskyi. With photographs of soldiers, posters, and flags, relatives and friends of defenders came out to draw public attention to prisoners of war and missing persons, to promote their search and exchange.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held an expert discussion with international participation on the Ukraine’s European Integration: Progress through the Russian-Ukrainian War topic. Representatives of authorities, the scientific community, diplomatic institutions and the public sector from Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Romania and Georgia took part in the discussion. The discussion focused on the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to EU standards; the transformation of the legal system under martial law and the protection of victims of hostilities, etc.

Britain announced the “largest ever” package of sanctions against the russian shadow fleet. The sanctions were imposed on almost 100 oil tankers, which are the main part of putin’s shadow fleet and are responsible for transporting cargo worth more than $24bn since the beginning of 2024.
