The enemy, despite the significant losses suffered by our defenders, continues to try to break through the defences of Ukrainian troops.
There were 79 combat engagements in total during the day.
Hostile artillery shelling from the territory of russia hit the areas of Novodmytrivka, Bila Bereza, Porozok, Stepok, Ulanove, Bobylivka, Tovstodubove, Novovasylivka, Prokhody, Popovka, Maryne, Petrushivka, Miropilske in Sumy oblast.
Ukrainian troops repelled two enemy attacks towards Kharkiv near Vovchansk, and three more firefights are ongoing in the area.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attacked positions twice near Zahryzove and Petropavlivka, and our defenders successfully repelled the enemy attacks.
Towards Lyman, the invading army carried out eight attacks in the areas of Lipove, Ridkodub, and in the directions of Novyi Myr and Kolodiazi. Two firefights are currently underway.
The enemy did not conduct any active offensive towards Siversk.
Towards Kramatorsk, our defenders repelled two attacks by the russian invaders in the areas of Kurdiumivka and Chasiv Yar, and one battle is currently underway.
Towards Toretsk, russians tried to force our units out of their positions in the areas of Dachne and Toretsk, where the Defence Forces have already repelled one assault, and another firefight is still ongoing.
Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy has made 36 attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of Kalynove, Promin, Lysivka, Dachanske, Shevchenko, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novoserhiivka, Kotliarivka, Sribne, Andriivka, and in the directions of Malynivka, Myrolyubivka, and Oleksiivka. Defence forces are holding back the attack and have already repelled 27 enemy attacks. Enemy aircraft launched guided missiles in the areas of Rusyn Yar, Nova Poltavka, Stara Mykolaivka, Myrnohrad, Bilytske, Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka.
Towards Novopavlivka, Ukrainian soldiers repelled three attacks by the occupying army, and 11 attempts to storm our positions have already been stopped in the areas of Kostiantynopil, Rivne, Novosilka, Vilne Pole, Shevchenko, Novopil, Odradne. Novopil, Temyrivka, Zelene Pole and Novodarivka were hit by air strikes.
Towards Huliaipole, near Vysoke, the Ukrainian defence forces successfully repelled two enemy attacks. The enemy also fired unguided aerial missiles at Huliaipole and Malynivka.
Towards Orikhiv, our defenders successfully stopped four attacks in the areas of Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky, Kamianske and Novoandriivka. The enemy launched air strikes on Mala Tokmachka and Kamianske.
Towards Kherson, the russian invaders unsuccessfully attacked the positions of our defenders once. The enemy launched an airstrike with unguided aerial missiles near the village of Olhivka.
Towards Kursk, Ukrainian defenders repelled three attacks. In addition, the enemy fired 182 artillery shells at the positions of our troops and settlements, including two from multiple launch rocket systems, and conducted four air strikes, dropping four guided bombs.
In 2024, Ukraine spent $64.7bn on the war, while russia spent more than twice as much. According to a report by the independent international institute SIPRI, Ukraine’s military spending in 2024 increased by 2.9% compared to 2023 and reached $64.7 billion. This amount is 43% of russia’s military spending and 54% of the total expenditure of the Ukrainian government. The SIPRI report notes that Ukraine had one of the highest military burdens in the world, with military spending accounting for 34% of GDP in 2024 (down from 37% in 2023). At the same time, russia’s military spending in 2024 reached $149bn, which is 38% more than in the previous year and accounts for 7.1% of the aggressor country’s GDP.
Ukraine has launched Brave1 Market, a marketplace for the military where they can choose equipment for the war, buying it for money or “e-points”. This project is anti-corruption, as it allows units to buy equipment without intermediaries. The marketplace has two product catalogues: an open and a closed one, which can only be accessed through authorisation in the Delta system. The platform already has more than a thousand products, including drones, robotic systems and software.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
Frontline
According to the RMA, yesterday 200 combat engagements were recorded. Towards Kharkiv, four combat engagements took place near Vovchansk.
Towards Kupiansk, five occupants’ attacks took place yesterday. Defence forces repelled enemy assaults near Zahryzove and in the direction of Novoozynove and Hlushkivka.
Attacks
Andrii Kanashevych, Head of Kupiansk Regional Military Administration, reported that a 16-year-old boy was wounded as a result of a russian attack on Starovirivtsi village, and a resident of Kupiansk was also injured by russian shelling today. According to him, starting at 10am, russia launched several bomb attacks on Myrne, Hrushivka and Husynka villages of Kindrashivka community, Starovirivtsi village of Shevchenkove community and Kupiansk city.

Yevhen Vasylenko, Spokesman of Kharkiv State Emergency Service, reported on Suspilne Kharkiv that the forest fire that broke out on the night of 4 May in the woods near Izium was localised around 5:30pm on 5 May. The fire spread over an area of 85 hectares. The fire is being extinguished by 17 rescuers and five pieces of equipment. As of 11:30am, five of the six fires that started in Kharkiv as a result of russian strikes have been extinguished. According to him, rescuers continue to work in a hotel complex in Kyivskyi district, where the building’s structures are smouldering.
Yesterday Kharkiv and five settlements in the oblast came under enemy fire. Eleven people were injured in the shelling, four of them in Kharkiv.
The enemy fired 20 Geranium-2 UAVs at four districts of the city: Shevchenkivskyi, Kyivskyi, Industrialsnyi and Kholodnohirskyi in eight locations. A fire broke out in the city’s largest market, Barabashovo. About 20 trade pavilions were completely destroyed and nearly 80 others were damaged. Residential buildings and parked cars also came under fire.
The enemy actively used various types of weapons in Kharkiv oblast:

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:
▪️ In Izium region, 14 private households were damaged;
▪️ In Kupiansk region, 2 private houses, a warehouse and 2 cars were damaged.
▪️ In Kharkiv region, 8 private houses and a fire station were damaged.

The press service of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that in Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv, residential buildings and four cars were damaged in a massive russian drone attack. Three men aged 44, 59 and 71, as well as a 52-year-old woman, suffered an acute stress reaction.
Russian army shelled the largest market in Barabashovo. As a result of the UAV attacks, about 90 commercial facilities were damaged by fire. Another 20 burned to the ground. The SES extinguished a large-scale fire that covered an area of 500 sq m. Oleksandr Makarenko, Vice President of AVEC & Co, stated that three blocks on the territory of the new children’s market site were completely burnt out. The hit was not far from the spot where russia struck in February.

Donetsk oblast
Frontline
Viktor Trehubov, Spokesman of the Khortytsia military unit, said that towards Novopavlivka, russian troops are aiming to reach Dnipropetrovsk oblast by 9 May.
Viktor Trehubov, Spokesman of the Khortytsia military unit, reported that russian troops are trying to deploy their subversive and reconnaissance groups along the frontline to infiltrate certain settlements.
Oleksandr Syrskyi, Chief Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, stated that Ukrainian defence forces managed to stabilise the situation towards Pokrovsk and seize the tactical initiative in some places.
The General Staff informed that russian troops did not advance towards Siversk and reduced their attacks towards Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka.
Towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian defenders stopped 78 attacks in the areas of Sukha Balka, Stara Mykolaivka, Vodiane Druhe, Novotoretske, Shevchenko, Udachne, Uspenivka, Troitske, Kotliarivka, Bohdanivka and Andriivka yesterday. Also there were 115 attacks.
Towards Novopavlivka, the Armed Forces repelled 24 attacks near Novopil, Novosilka, Pryvilne, Komar and towards Odradne, while the previous day they repelled 52.
Attacks
Honcharenko, Head of the CMA, reported that Kramatorsk was also hit by russian shelling again at around 7am. The russians hit the private sector with a Lancet UAV. There were no casualties, and no damage to the residential sector was reported.
After midnight, russian troops attacked 4 settlements. Three people were injured: 2 in Kramatorsk and 1 in Bilytske. Explosions were also heard in Ocheretyne and Samarske villages. At least 4 apartment buildings, 6 garages and an industrial area were damaged.
Yesterday police recorded 3,198 russian strikes on the frontline and in the residential sector. The attacks took place in 20 settlements.

86 civilian objects were destroyed, including 62 residential buildings.
The russians attacked Myrnohrad with drones and artillery, killing one person and injuring six. An apartment building, a private house, a civilian car and a motorbike that was being driven by people at the time of the attack were damaged.
One person was killed and two injured in Ivanopillia, Kramatorsk region, which was attacked by the enemy with bombs and artillery. Five private houses were damaged.
A civilian was killed in Novoekonomichne, Pokrovsk region.
Russia fired a R-77 guided missile at Novodonetske, injuring three civilians, including two children aged 2 and 10. An apartment building was damaged.
The occupiers shelled Nove Shakhove with 6 drones, one of them hit a civilian car, injuring a person. Two private houses and civilian vehicles were damaged.
In Oleksandrohrad, Volnovakha region, a civilian was injured in a bomb attack and a hospital was damaged.
Kostiantynivka withstood 8 shelling attacks, 2 apartment buildings and three private houses, an educational institution, a hospital and a non-residential building were damaged. KAB-250 bombs hit 14 private houses, 2 shops and an administrative building in Poltavka, and 29 private houses in Rusyn Yar.
In Drobysheve and Shandryholove, the shelling caused a forest of 10 hectares each to catch fire.
Information about 5 civilians killed on 4 May has been established: 1 – in Myrnohrad, 4 – in Rih village of Pokrovsk community.
Serhii Sazhko, Head of the Military Administration, informed Suspilne Donbas that over the past week, russian shelling destroyed two schools, a hospital, and two farms in Shakhove community. According to him, shelling has intensified, and russian FPV drones are hunting for cars, as on 5 May, a car driver was injured in a drone attack. About a thousand people have left the community in two weeks.
Luhansk oblast
Nadiia and Hrekivka were the places where the enemy pressed yesterday, trying to find a weakness in our defence in Luhansk oblast. According to the Regional Military Administration, the occupiers had significant support from aviation and artillery. Specifically, they launched three air strikes, fired three more times from multiple launch rocket systems, and used cannon artillery 19 times. They sent 215 UAVs towards the fortifications of Ukrainian soldiers and surrounding villages.
The so-called “lpr” will begin to create a unified register of real estate damaged as a result of hostilities and subject to demolition. They will not restore the multi-storey buildings and private houses destroyed by russians during the assaults on settlements. The specifics of regulating relations regarding the identification and demolition of such property have already been approved. Based on the results of the inspection of each building, a conclusion will be drawn up on the presence or absence of grounds for dismantling.
By introducing a mandatory three-year work experience after graduation, “lpr” will try to save the situation with a catastrophic shortage of doctors. The relevant draft law is being considered by the kremlin. It proposes that for refusing to work in a public clinic within three years of graduation, doctors will be fined three times the cost of their education. The first to be affected by the law, if it is adopted, will be those who have already entered medical schools.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
KCMA reported on the establishment of the Alley of Defenders of Ukraine as a systemic location symbolising a culture of respect and gratitude to the soldiers of the Ukrainian Defence Forces in honour of Infantry Day. A commemorative sign “INFANTRY” was unveiled next to the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian people. The sign features engraved footprints of an infantryman’s boots pointing east as a symbol of resistance.
On 6 May, a peaceful action was held in Kyiv to remind the public and the authorities of the servicemen and women held in russian captivity and missing in action. Relatives of defenders from the Kursk and Zaporizhzhia directions gathered near the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War to remind society and the authorities about the captives and missing persons.
Zhytomyr oblast
According to the statement by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on 6 May, Hennadii Svirshchuk, a soldier from Zviahel, returned from russian captivity during the exchange of prisoners of war. According to his wife, Hennadii was captured on 19 October 2023 near Krasnohorivka in the Avdiivka sector. On 6 May, 205 defenders were returned to Ukraine.
The press service of Zhytomyr City Council informs that the funeral service for 42-year-old soldier Oleh Shchipansky, who was killed on 1 May 2025 while performing a combat mission, will be held at St Sophia Cathedral in Zhytomyr.
Chudniv City Council reported on Facebook that 24-year-old paratrooper Kyrylo Perets from Chudniv community returned home after almost three years in captivity. According to preliminary information, 11 of the 205 released Ukrainian soldiers originated from Zhytomyr oblast.
Tetiana Pashchenko, a craftswoman from Zhytomyr oblast, embroidered a portrait of US Army veteran Jericho Sky Magallon, who was killed near Bakhmut while defending Ukraine from russian troops. She told Suspilne that she had been working on the embroidered canvas for 7 months and plans to send the portrait to his mother in California.
Vitalii Bunechko, Head of Zhytomyr Regional Administration, informed that the reconstruction of Chudniv hospital in Zhytomyr oblast is underway as part of a project funded by the European Investment Bank. Repair work at the facility began in early April. The hospital’s inpatient building and radiation shelter will be repaired
Sumy oblast
As a result of russian shelling in the oblast over the past day, four civilians were killed — two in Bilopillia community and two in Vorozhba community. Additionally, eight people were wounded or injured: three wounded and three injured in Vorozhba community, including one child. Two civilians were wounded in Bilopillia community (one of them later died in the hospital; the deceased was 34 years old).
russian forces carried out nearly 140 attacks on 36 settlements across 13 territorial communities in the oblast.
The most shelling was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided air-dropped bombs, multiple launch rocket systems, and FPV-drones: more than 40 strikes by guided bombs, nearly 20 FPV-drone attacks, and almost 80 explosions from multiple launch rocket systems.
Over the past day, the enemy dropped 23 guided air-dropped bombs on Bilopillia community and 11 on Vorozhba community.
Civilian infrastructure objects have been damaged or destroyed:
- In Richky community, a non-residential building was damaged.
- In Vorozhba community, non-residential buildings, three cars, and over 30 residential houses were damaged.
- In Velyka Pysarivka community, a private residential house was damaged.
- In Bilopillia community, a non-residential building, four cars, 15 residential houses, and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged.
Over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and non-governmental organisations from border communities, evacuated 74 people.
Also the air raid alert in the oblast lasted for 11 hours and 23 minutes.
Due to the worsening security situation, active evacuation of civilians continues in Bilopillia and Vorozhba communities. Evacuation headquarters are functioning, and hotlines and messenger groups are available for communication by residents. In Bilopillia and Vorozhba, designated assembly points with shelters have been established. Every morning, rescuers go door-to-door to inform people about the evacuation.
In Velyka Chernechchyna, russian forces struck the center of the village by a missile. Three people were killed: a 20-year-old woman, a 41-year-old man, and a 6-year-old boy. Seven others were wounded, including four children. An investigation into a war crime has been launched.
On 7 and 8 May, Days of Mourning have been declared in Sumy community. The reason is the missile strike on 6 May, which claimed the lives of civilians in one of the district councils.
Chernihiv oblast
russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk—using various types of weaponry. Eighteen villages came under fire.
As a result of an explosive device dropped from a UAV in Kostobobriv, an elderly woman was injured. In Hremiach, an FPV-drone strike caused a non-residential building to catch fire.

Kostobobriv: three explosions, explosive devices dropped from UAVs. A local resident born in 1950 was injured in the shelling. According to the Department of Civil Protection and Defence Work, the woman was taken to Novhorod-Siverskyi Central City Hospital.

Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Volodymyr Kohut, Acting Head of Poltava RMA, reported that in Lubny region, a UAV crash caused partial damage to the roof of a private house and to a power line. About 20 households are currently without electricity.
Soldier Andrii Botvyna from Serhiivka village in Myrhorod region was killed in action while defending Ukraine. He died in Sumy oblast on 4 May 2025. He was 43 years old.
At Kremenchuk Lyceum №5 named after Taras Shevchenko, a Memorial Alley was created in honour of alumni who were killed in the russian-Ukrainian war.
Vinnytsia oblast
Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that during a prisoner exchange, 5 servicemen from Vinnytsia were released. Their names are Nazar, Ivan, Ruslan, Pavlo and Radzh.
Kirovohrad oblast
In Kropyvnytskyi, residents paid tribute to servicemen Kostiantyn Kobets, Vitalii Olizko, Artur Kachechka and Maksym Rudnyk. The funeral procession paused at Heroes of Maidan Square for a national moment of silence in honour of the fallen soldiers.
Olena Prokhorova, a representative of the YaMariupol centre in Kropyvnytskyi, stated that in Oleksandriia, a mobile team from the YaMariupol. Beside You project will be operating. Humanitarian aid will be distributed and consultations held for Mariupol residents living in the community. Currently, 70 families from Mariupol reside in Oleksandriia.
Kateryna Koltunova, Deputy Head of Kirovohrad RMA, informed that on 24 May, Kropyvnytskyi will host the Strong Ukraine inclusive competition for veterans, featuring adaptive sports. This event was previously held last year.
Poltava oblast

Cherkasy oblast
Since morning, Cherkasy oblast has come under enemy attack. Ukrainian air defence systems shot down 10 UAVs over the oblast. 1 person was injured in the regional centre after a strike drone fell. The man is in serious condition and has been hospitalised, where he is receiving all necessary medical care. Preliminary reports indicate that windows of a private business and a shop were damaged as a result of russian aggression. The area is still being examined and emergency services are working on site.
Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, stated that 7 residents of Cherkasy were released from russian captivity in a recent exchange. They include Junior Sergeant Vladyslav Pivtorak, Senior Soldier Vladyslav Pastushenko, Soldiers Leonid Holubenko, Serhii Hupalo, Artem Muzychenko, Vladyslav Romantsevych and Seaman Ivan Huba.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 6 May, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 6 russian assaults in Orikhiv and Huliaipole regions. Clashes took place near Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky, Kamianske and Novoandriivka. Mala Tokmachka and Kamianske were targeted by airstrikes.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that 9 servicemen from Zaporizhzhia oblast were freed during the prisoner exchange between Ukraine and russia on 6 May.
The General Staff reported that on 5 May, Ukrainian forces repelled 14 attacks in Orikhiv region and 7 in Huliaipole region.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 5 May, russian forces carried out 479 attacks on 15 towns and villages in the oblast. These included 293 drone strikes of various types targeting Malokaterynivka, Chervonodniprovka, Lobkove, Stepove, Prymorske, Kamianske, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novodarivka and Charivne.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 5 May, russian forces attacked Kutsurub community 3 times by FPV drones, damaging a house. There were no injuries reported.
The coastal waters of Ochakiv community came under FPV drone attack twice. In Kobleve community, a children’s wellness centre was damaged by a strike drone. No casualties were reported in either community.
Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv RMA, said that 17 marines from Mykolaiv oblast have returned home. The soldiers from the 36th Marine Brigade were freed during the 6 May prisoner exchange.
Odesa oblast
Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa RMA, informed that russian forces attacked Odesa oblast by strike drones, killing 1 person. A 29-year-old man died from fatal thermal burns caused by a damaged power line. A 19-year-old man was hospitalised with smoke inhalation injuries. The attack damaged private residential houses, farm structures, an educational institution, warehouse facilities of a private business and vehicles.
According to the Air Command South, more than 20 russian drones were shot down over Odesa oblast during the 5 May attack.
The Ukrainian Navy reported that during the night of 6 May, they shot down 9 Shahed drones targeting the oblast.
Referring to the RMA, a serviceman from Odesa oblast, Viktor Ivashkivskyi, has returned to Ukraine after being held in russian captivity.

Kherson oblast
Based on the information provided by the RMA, during the day, russian forces shelled Beryslav. 6 strikes were recorded, including 1 that hit a school building. There were no casualties reported.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, russian troops dropped explosives from a drone on civilians in Chervonyi Yar, Kherson oblast. 1 person was killed and 2 injured.
The russian artillery struck Komyshany near Kherson. A woman who was in her yard was killed.
Referring to the CMA, overnight, russian troops shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. Private houses were hit, cars caught fire and power lines were damaged. There were no casualties reported.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that in total, on 5 May, 1 person was killed and 3 injured in Kherson oblast. The russian forces shelled 34 settlements. 2 high-rise buildings, 9 private houses, gas pipelines, storage facilities and vehicles were damaged.
The CMA informed that a 39-year-old Kherson resident sought medical assistance after being wounded in a russian attack on Dniprovskyi district on 1 May. She suffered a blast injury and concussion.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
Volyn oblast
Ukraine has returned 205 of its soldiers from enemy captivity, who defended the country on the hottest front lines, including Mariupol. Among the released servicemen returning home, there are 6 from Volyn. The youngest of them is 22 years old.
Zakarpattia oblast
24 children from Donetsk oblast went to the oblast for a vacation. The Illara Recreational Complex accepted children who need special support: orphans, children deprived of parental care, children of combatants and fallen defenders of Ukraine, as well as those who suffered as a result of the aggression of the russian federation.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Ivano-Frankivsk community has added UAH 16m to the rebcenter in Sofiivka. At the beginning of the year, UAH 10m was pledged, so now the total amount of co-financing from the community is UAH 26m.
Lviv oblast
Since the beginning of the year, the RMA has already allocated over UAH 268m for the needs of the military. Another almost UAH 19m is being allocated from the regional budget.
Memorial plaques to 2 fallen defenders were unveiled in Strii region. Yurii Syrotiuk and Ivan Opryshko were killed while performing combat missions in Kursk region.
Rivne oblast
Representatives of Rivne oblast joined the international conference Healthcare Initiative for Ukraine, which is currently taking place in Prague, the Czech Republic. The event aims to strengthen medical support for Ukraine in times of war. They discussed further steps regarding the construction of a hospital in Rivne oblast.
Ternopil oblast
The Unmanned Systems Battalion Raid received 50 FPV drones and 2 Bluetti charging stations from Ternopil community.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Ukraine has returned home another 205 of its soldiers who were in russian captivity. Among those released are 6 soldiers from Khmelnytskyi oblast (5 from Khmelnytskyi and 1 from Shepetivsk region).
Chernivtsi oblast
205 soldiers returned home from enemy captivity. 3 of them are from Chernivtsi oblast. Davydian Vasyl, 24-year-old resident of the village of Panka, Storozhynetsk community. He was in captivity for over 3 years, since March 2022. Radomsky Artur, 24-year-old resident of the village of Strilets’kyi Kut, Mamayev community. In captivity since September 2024. Sheptun Denis, 22-year-old resident of the village of Velykyi Kuchuriv. In captivity since November 2024.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Ukraine has approved an agreement with Japan on the use of $3bn in frozen russian assets. The agreement is part of the Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration initiative.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Olaf Scholz, Federal Chancellor of Germany. They discussed support for Ukraine.
Iryna Mudra, Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine, spoke at the American Jewish Committee Global Forum 2025 in New York. In her address, Iryna Mudra thanked the AJC and the international Jewish community for their consistent support of Ukraine since the beginning of russian aggression in 2014. She noted that representatives of the Ukrainian Jewish community also defend Ukraine and give their lives in the fight for the independence of the state.
