War in Ukraine today: latest news, 02 March 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1103rd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 2 March, there were 72 combat clashes on the frontline. Ukrainian defenders are stopping the enemy, holding the lines and destroying the plans of the Russians. At the same time, the occupiers continue to concentrate their efforts on Pokrovsk, Toretsk and Kursk directions.

Border towns and villages of our state continue to suffer from russian artillery shelling. Tymonovichi in Chernihiv oblast; Hirky, Koreniok, Petrushivka in Sumy oblast were affected. Liutivka in Kharkiv oblast was hit by airstrikes.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy made one attempt to advance to Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of ​​the settlement of Zahryzove, which was successfully repelled by Ukrainian defenders.

Towards Lyman, the aggressor attacked Ukrainian positions seven times near the settlement of Nove and towards Novomykhailivka.

In the Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled three enemy attacks in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar, Hryhorivka and Oleksandro-Shultyny.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked the defensive positions of Ukrainian troops in the vicinity of Toretsk and Shcherbynivka 12 times. Six clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy’s high activity currently remains. Clashes of varying intensity began here thirteen times. Ukrainian soldiers repelled enemy attacks in the vicinity of the settlements of Tarasivka, Promin, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Kotliarivka, Andriivka and Ulakly. The settlements of Pokrovsk, Hryshyne and Leontovychi were hit by airstrikes. 

Towards Novopavlivka, the invaders tried to break through near Konstantinopol and Skudne four times, but were stopped. The enemy launched airstrikes on the vicinity of the settlements of Voskresenka and Sichneve.

Towards Huliaipole, the aggressor launched airstrikes in the areas of Huliaipole, Zaliznychne and Priiutne. In addition, near Pryvilne, the Defense Forces successfully repelled one enemy attack.

Towards Orikhiv, the battle continues in the area of ​​the settlement of Nesterianka.

Towards Kherson, the enemy twice stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders, and one battle is currently underway. 

Towards Kharkiv and Siversk, the enemy did not carry out active actions.


In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled 14 attacks, eight more clashes are ongoing. In addition, the enemy carried out 10 airstrikes using 17 guided bombs.

Ukrainian troops are exhausting the enemy along the entire line of combat contact and in the rear.

The press service of the Air Force reports that during the week, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shot down 6 X-101 cruise missiles, 665 Shahed attack drones, 179 reconnaissance UAVs and 173 drones of other types. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs that for the first time, a rotation of employees at the Zaporizhzhia NPP took place without Ukraine’s consent. They also added that they condemn the violation by a number of IAEA employees of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine as a result of russian blackmail.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Front

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the defense forces repelled the occupiers’ attempt to advance to Ukrainian positions near Zahryzove towards Kupiansk. The village of Liutovka was under russian airstrikes.

The RMA reported that the day before, the enemy did not conduct offensive operations towards Kharkiv, Siversk and Kramatorsk.

Towards Kupiansk, the aggressor conducted three offensive operations near Novoosynove and Zahryzove.

In February 2025, it became known about the death of 41 Ukrainian defenders from Kharkiv oblast. The communities of the region reported about the death of servicemen.

Shelling

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv RMA, says that russian troops shelled Klynove-Novoselivka with artillery at 2:30pm. The russian federation launched 15 strikes, damaging four private homes, utility buildings, and gas and power grids.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv RMA, says that the premises of the lyceum in Ivashka, Zolochiv community, were damaged by FPV drone strikes. According to him, the shelling occurred at around 9am. No one was injured.

At 04:37, the russian federation shelled Bohodukhiv district, the village of Turove was hit. As a result of the hit of 1 KAB in an open area on the outskirts of the village, 3 private households and 2 outbuildings were damaged.

The day before, at 22:30, the russian federation shelled Bohodukhiv region, the village of Zolochiv. As a result of the hit of an FPV drone, two private residential buildings were damaged.

At 21:30, the russian federation shelled Izyum region, Balakliia city, outside the settlement where the UAV fragments fell.

At 21:25, the russian federation shelled Bohodukhiv TG, the village of Oleksandrivka. As a result of the fall of the Geran UAV debris, a high-voltage line was severed. Restoration work is ongoing.

At 21:15, the russian federation shelled Kharkiv oblast, the village of Kozacha Lopan. A private house was damaged as a result of the shelling.

At 17:00, the russian federation shelled Kupiansk region, the village of Petropavlivka. A 51-year-old man was injured as a result of the shelling by an FPV drone and hospitalized in a medical facility.

At 16:30, the russian federation shelled Kupiansk region, the village of Malyi Burluk. Falling UAV fragments.

At 16:00, the russian federation shelled Kharkiv oblast, Chuhuiv region, the village of Staryi Saltiv, in an open area. A UAV hit the ground.

At 14:40, the russian federation shelled Bohodukhiv region, the village of Klynova-Novoselivka (Oleksandrivka). As a result of the shelling with an FPV drone, two private residential buildings, two outbuildings and a car were damaged.

At 12:55, the russian federation shelled Kharkiv region, the village of Tsyrkuny, the Molniya UAV hit the ground.

At about 06:30, the russian federation shelled Kupiansk region, the village of Kivsharivka. As a result of the shelling with MLRS, a nine-story apartment building was damaged, a fire broke out. No casualties.

Donetsk oblast

Over the past day, russian troops have launched 3,180 strikes on the frontline and residential areas.

13 settlements were under fire: the cities of Bilytske, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Lyman, Pokrovsk, Sloviansk, Toretsk, the villages of Zelenyi Hai, Ivanopillia, Malynivka, Nova Poltavka, Novoekonomichne, and Novoolenivka.

78 civilian objects were destroyed, including 48 residential buildings.

russians launched two strikes on Kramatorsk, one of them with a FAB-250 bomb, killing a civilian and wounding two more. At least 4 private houses were damaged.

One person was killed in Malynivka, Pokrovsky region, an apartment building was damaged.

Pokrovsk withstood 6 enemy attacks, including 2 bombings. Two civilians were injured, 5 apartment buildings and 8 private houses were damaged.

In Bilytske, a russian drone injured a civilian. One person was injured in Nova Poltavka, three private houses were damaged.

In Ivanopillia, the occupiers dropped a FAB-250 bomb, one person was injured, 4 private houses and an educational institution were damaged.

In Kostiantynivka, the enemy struck with two FABs and a drone, 1 apartment building and 7 private houses, 12 garages, a shop, and a power line were damaged.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

A group of IAEA experts has inspected the remains of a drone that hit the sarcophagus of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. According to IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, Ukrainian firefighters continue to extinguish the fire in the building above the destroyed reactor, which broke out after the drone strike on 14 February. More than 400 rescuers from the State Emergency Service are involved in the response to the attack, working in difficult conditions.

A recruitment centre of the Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky Separate Presidential Brigade was opened in Kyiv. On the first day of its operation, the centre was visited by the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko.

On 2 March, a farewell to military man and choreographer Volodymyr Rakov was held in Kyiv. He studied at leading US dance schools, won world dance championships, starred in the Ukrainian full-length dance action film Let’s Dance, and won the 6th season of the project The Greatest Dance Off. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Volodymyr decided to join the Armed Forces. On 6 January 2025, the 30-year-old man was killed during a combat mission.

Zhytomyr oblast

A unit of the National Police of Zhytomyr oblast received  a mobile modular town for deminers from Estonia. This will allow several dozen demining specialists to quickly move to areas that need to be cleared and work in comfortable conditions. The project is implemented by the Estonian International Development Centre and the Estonian Rescue Association.

On 1 March, a peaceful rally in support of the families of captured and missing defenders was held in Zviahel under the slogan ‘Missing does not mean forever!’. Among the more than two hundred participants were people who have been waiting for their relatives for about three years.

Sumy oblast

The RMA reported that on 2 March, anti-aircraft fighters shot down 19 enemy UAVs of “Shakhed” type in the sky over Sumy Oblast.  Since the beginning of 2025, the air defense units of the region have destroyed 575 russian drones.

 The RMA informed that the enemy attacked four communities by BpLA.  As a result of the strikes, 10 private homes and 4 civilian cars were damaged in Sumy community, non-residential premises were damaged in  Komyshansk community, and a non-residential building and an outbuilding caught fire in  Boromlia community.

 In total, during the night and morning of 2 February, the russians carried out 12 shellings of the border areas and settlements of Sumy Oblast.  12 explosions were recorded: UAV attack (10 strikes), FPV-drone (1 explosion), KAB (1 explosion).  Sumy, Yunakiv, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Boromlia, and Komysh communities came under fire.

According to the RMA, in the evening of 1 March, the russian military carried out airstrikes on critical infrastructure facilities in Okhtyrka region. The enemy used an unmanned aerial vehicle of the Shahed type.

 The russian army struck Stetskivka in Sumy community by a drone.  As a result of the russian attack, the building caught fire, the fire was extinguished.  It is known about more than 25 damaged apartments and 150 broken windows, two houses cannot be restored.  There are no injured people.

During the past day, the military of the russian federation carried out 61 shellings of Sumy Oblast – a total of 110 explosions were recorded.  The enemy fired by mortars (6 explosions), artillery (60 explosions), MLRS (1 explosion), attacked by anti-aircraft fire (1 explosion), FPV-drones (17 explosions), dropped VOG from UAVs (26 explosions).  12 communities were shelled: Sumy, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Bilopollia, Vorozhba, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Slobidka, Esman, Khutir-Mykhailivskyi, Seredyna-Buda communities.

 As a result of russian shelling in Yunakivka community, one civilian was injured and a private house was destroyed.  The fence, garage, 2 cars and outbuildings were damaged due to the attack of Seredyna-Buda community.  According to Sumy RMA, in Khotin community, a private house burned down as a result of being hit by an explosive object dropped from a UAV. 

Sumy Region Police reported that as a result of shelling during the day on 1 February, one person was injured, and 32 houses, a garage, 6 cars, and three farm buildings were also damaged.

Chernihiv oblast

During the day of 1 March, russian troops attacked two border communities of Chernihiv Oblast: Semenivka and Snovsk.  The enemy fired mortars (13 explosions) and barrel artillery (6 explosions), used FPV-drones (4 explosions) and dropped explosives from UAVs (2 explosions).  According to Chernihiv Border Detachment, six villages were under enemy fire. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that from evening until morning, the occupiers continued to attack Nikopol oblast with artillery and kamikaze drones. They targeted the district centre, Myrove and Pokrovsk communities. According to the updated information, 2 private houses and a car were damaged as a result of yesterday’s kamikaze drone strike on Nikopol.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region about two dozen times. They used artillery and drones. Three people were injured in Nikopol. Rescuers pulled an 84-year-old man out from under the rubble of his house. He was hospitalised in serious condition, but his condition is currently stable. Two women, aged 44 and 82, were also injured. In general, the occupants targeted the district centre and Marhanets community. Seven private houses, 8 outbuildings, a kindergarten, a business, a car and a truck were damaged, as well as infrastructure and a power line. 

Vinnytsia oblast

​In the week from 24 February to 2 March 2025, 26 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were reported killed.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, reported that the Air Armed forces were working in Kirovohrad oblast at night. In Kropyvnytskyi region, debris damaged a power line.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of  Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, said that at night, defenders shot down a russian UAV in Cherkasy oblast.

Around a hundred people gathered in the centre of Cherkasy to commemorate the prisoners and missing persons.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the Institute for the Study of War, russian forces continue assault operations near Piatykhatky and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia oblast, but the frontline remains unchanged. In Huliaipole region, russian troops attempted an attack near Charivne but failed to advance.

Based on the information provided by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 1 March, the Defence Forces repelled 4 russian attacks in Orikhiv region. Clashes took place near Piatykhatky, Nesterianka and Kamianske.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that in the evening, russian forces launched a 2nd attack on Zaporizhzhia. A residential apartment building was hit, causing a fire. 2 women, aged 31 and 59, were injured.

On 1 March, russian forces carried out 458 strikes on 12 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The attacks included 288 drone strikes targeting Zaporizhzhia, Bilenke, Piatykhatky, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne and Novodarivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the RMA, during the night of 2 March, Ukrainian air defence forces destroyed 5 Shahed drones over Mykolaiv oblast.

On 1 March, russian troops attacked Kutsurub community by FPV drones. In Dmytrivka village, a vehicle and power lines were damaged. There were no injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

The Ukrainian Navy reported that there are no russian warships in the Black or Azov Seas. 3 Kalibr missile carriers remain deployed in the Mediterranean.

Kherson oblast

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that around 5:30pm, russian forces attacked a civilian vehicle by a drone in Beryslav region. A 48-year-old woman was killed on the spot. A 53-year-old man sustained blast and head trauma, a concussion and was hospitalised.

According to the RMA, russian forces attacked a passenger bus by a drone in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. A 53-year-old woman was killed, and 10 injured. Law enforcement authorities launched a criminal investigation.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, stated that around 6:30am, russian forces carried out a drone attack in Kozatske village, killing a 63-year-old man.

The State Emergency Service reported that during the night, russian shelling caused 2 fires in Kherson. A gas pipe and a non-residential building caught fire, but emergency crews extinguished the flames. In the evening, russian shelling ignited reeds over a one-hectare area in Bilozirka.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, informed that Ukrainian air defence units destroyed 3 russian Shahed-131/136 drones over Kherson oblast during a nighttime attack.

According to the RMA, the boy injured in yesterday’s russian drone attack in Dariivka remains in intensive care in critical but stable condition.

Oleksandr Prokudin stated that around 9:15pm, russian forces shelled Antonivka near Kherson. A 65-year-old woman died in the hospital. A 22-year-old man was hospitalised in critical condition and a 45-year-old woman was injured.

The regional prosecutor’s office reported that in the evening, russian troops shelled Beryslav. A 63-year-old woman was killed.

The RMA informed that on 1 March, russian shelling in Kherson oblast wounded 10 people, including a child. The russian forces attacked 36 settlements, damaging a high-rise building, 13 private houses, garages, buses and cars.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA reported that in the oblast, almost all Volyn communities have started work on creating centers. Currently, 4 resilience centers are operating in the oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 50 bags with grocery sets and. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,100 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine /Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Valentyn Stefano and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Families of the fallen Heroes were presented with state and regional awards. The III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was awarded to Mariana Tryasko, Andrii Zavadovskyi, David Kuchma, Andrii Sokolnyk, Taras Klid, Ivan Kuchirka, Bohdan Bukhonko and Viktor Shalimov.

Lviv oblast

3 more communities of Lviv oblast have joined the Side by Side: United Communities national project. From now on, Novorozdil community will cooperate with Nyzhnosyrovatska, Zhydachivska – with Bilopolska and Hnizdychivska – with Krasnopolska community of Sumy oblast. In total, 9 communities of Lviv oblast support communities in Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblast.

6 Defenders from Sheptytsk region were awarded the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). Taras Kavar was killed in August 2023 while performing a combat mission in Luhansk oblast. Oleh Mazepa was killed in February 2024 during a battle in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Yaroslav Mereha was killed in 2023 while performing a combat mission. Taras Panashchuk was killed in December 2023 while performing a combat mission in Donetsk oblast. Nazariy Kozymka was killed in June 2024 while performing a combat mission near the village of Novooleksandrivka, Donetsk oblast. Bohdan Lutsyk was killed in January 2024 while performing a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

Rivne oblast

The Return Alive CF donated a specially equipped Fiat Ducato vehicle to Rivne oblast for the needs of veterans. This vehicle is adapted for transporting defenders who are in wheelchairs, has an extended base and an elevator for comfortable transportation.

Ternopil oblast

26 defenders from Ternopil received the Honorary Citizen of Ternopil title (posthumously). The decision was made by deputies at a regular meeting of the 46th session of Ternopil City Council.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community pays 50% of the tuition for participants in the russian-Ukrainian war from the community. Last year, there were 127 such students in the community.

Chernivtsi oblast

Taras Khalavka, Bukovyna serviceman of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade and public activist received a high award – the III degree Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine and the UK have signed a £2.6bn loan agreement to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities. The loan will be repaid with proceeds from frozen russian assets.

Lithuania invests €20m in joint weapons production with Ukraine. For security reasons, the specific types of weapons covered by the agreement are not disclosed.

Petr Pavel, Czech President, called for the creation of a coalition of countries that want to achieve a just peace in Ukraine.
