What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. In turn, the Ukrainian Defence Forces are disrupting the enemy’s insidious plans, inflicting significant losses in manpower and equipment.

On 24 January, there were 117 combat engagements on the frontline.

Border settlements continue to suffer from cynical shelling from the territory of the russian federation, in particular Velyka Pysarivka, Hirky, Pokrovka, Kucherivka in Sumy oblast; Yanzhulivka in Chernihiv oblast.

Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian defenders repelled one enemy attack near Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy carried out nine assault operations near Pishchane, Hlushkivka, Nova Kruhliakivka, Zelenyi Hai and Zahryzove. Four firefights are ongoing.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked 11 times near the settlements of Novoiehorivka, Kopanky, Zelena Dolyna and Torske. Four engagements remained incomplete.

Ukrainian defence forces repelled 25 russian attacks near Chasiv Yar, Vasiukivka, Novomarkove and Bila Hora towards Kramatorsk, 17 engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked 13 times near Toretsk, Krymske, Leonidivka and Shcherbynivka. Four attacks are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupants made 46 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the vicinity of Vodiane Druhe, Baranovka, Miroliubivka, Yelizavetivka, Promin, Lysivka, Zelene, Pokrovsk, Novoukrainka, Udachne, Kotlyne, Novoielizavetivka, Uspenivka, Sribne, Andriivka, Dachne, Ulakly and Yantarne. The defence forces are holding back the enemy’s offensive and repelled 30 attacks, 16 engagements are still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being clarified.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy made one attempt to attack near Kostiantynopil, and the fighting is still ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy attacked three timesnear Mala Tokmachka and Novodanylivka with the support of aviation.

Towards Kherson, Ukrainian troops repelled two enemy attacks, and one firefight is still ongoing.

In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian Defence Forces units repelled six attacks by russian invaders, five attacks are still ongoing. The enemy made over 240 attacks, including four from multiple launch rocket systems.

In other frontline areas, the situation did not change significantly.


The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reports that Ukraine has managed to return the bodies of 757 fallen defenders. Law enforcement investigators, together with expert institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will identify the victims as soon as possible. 

Regina Kharchenko, Secretary of Zaporizhzhia City Council, says that as a result of the russian attack on 23 January, more than 7,000 customers are still without electricity. Work to restore the power grid is ongoing.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The General Staff reported that towards Kharkiv, one russian attack near Vovchansk was repelled. Four firefights are ongoing towards Kupiansk, and five morewere repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The russian army attacked near Pishchane, Hlushkivka, Nova Kruhliakivka, Zelenyi Hai and Zahryzove.

Towards Kharkiv, there was one firefight with russian invaders in the vicinity of Lyptsi.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy tried nine times to force Ukrainian units out of their positions near Dvorichna, Zahryzove and Petropavlivka, and the fighting is still ongoing.

Shelling

Mayor Ihor Terekhov says that a russian UAV attack was recorded in Osnovianskyi district of Kharkiv. 

At 00:22, Kharkiv region, Selektsionne village came under attack. The wreckage of the downed UAV damaged a power line.

The day before, at 23:30, Kuiansk region, Velykyi Burluk village came under attack by the russian federation. 2 Shahed UAVs hit the territory of a civilian enterprise.

At 15:10, Kupiansk town came under attack by the russian federation. A UAV hit the roadway.

At 12:56, Kupiansk region, Petropavlivka village came under attack from the russian federation. A 54-year-old woman died as a result of an FPV drone hit.

At 12:20, russians attacked Bohodukhivskyi region, Udy and Rozsokhuvate villages. There were 2 hits of the open area by the UAVs. No information on casualties or damage was received.

Other

Kharkiv paid tribute to Police Colonel Ihor Ivanchyshyn, who died after 81 days in hospital as a result of injuries sustained during russian missile attacks on Kharkiv on 1 November 2024.

Abuse of prisoners of war towards Kharkiv: the cases of two occupiers have been referred to court. According to the investigation, the defendants are the commander of a rifle company of tank troops with the call sign ‘Bars’ and his subordinate, a senior platoon rifleman with the call sign ‘Knavon’. At the end of May 2024, near Starytsia, Chuhuiv region, the occupiers captured four Ukrainian soldiers. During their ‘convoy’, the defenders were kicked all over their bodies, mocked with execution and forced to sing the USSR anthem. The occupiers will be tried in absentia in Chuhuev City Court.

24 people (2 children) were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions over the day.

Andrii Alekseiev, Head of Kharkiv Regional Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service, informs that in Kharkiv oblast, 25 bridge structures were destroyed as a result of hostilities, with the amount of damage amounting to about UAH 5 billion.

‘More than 30,000 IDPs have received help at the Support Centres. Kharkiv hubs in Vovchansk, Lipetsk, Kuril and Kupiansk provide food and hygiene kits, medical care, financial support and free legal advice.

In total, more than 520,000 IDPs are registered in Kharkiv oblast, of whom more than 200,000 live in the regional centre.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

 The General Staff reported that russian troops attacked in the urban area of Toretsk. The occupants conducted 15 attacks in this area of the frontline yesterday, in particular in the areas of Krymske, Diliivka and Shcherbynivka,.  

The Ukrainian military stopped most of the attacks towards Pokrovsk, where the occupiers tried to advance 63 times near Vodiane Druhe, Miroliubivka, Myrnohrad, Promin, Lysivka, Vidrodzhennia, Uspenivka, Andriivka, Shevchenko, Dachne, Ulakly and Yantarne.  

The occupiers made seven more assaults towards Lyman and Novopavlivka.  

Viktor Trehubov, Spokesman for the Khortytsia military unit, informs that the russian army fails to outflank Pokrovsk. Capturing the city remains the main priority of Russian troops.  

The Coordination Headquarters said that Ukraine has returned the bodies of another 757 fallen servicemen. In particular, the bodies of 451 defenders from Donetsk sector, 71 from Bakhmut sector, 51 from Vuhledar sector and 13 fallen defenders from Luhansk sector were returned.

Shelling

russian troops made 3,437 attacks along the frontline and in the residential sector. The enemy attacked 6 localities: the towns of Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Lyman, Pokrovsk, Rodynske, and the village of Viroliubivka. Seventy-three civilian objects were destroyed, including 49 residential buildings.

russians hit Kostiantynivka with 5 FAB-250 bombs and artillery, killing two people and injuring two others, damaging 20 private houses, 2 educational institutions, 5 outbuildings, a civilian car, 2 gas pipelines, and a power line.

In Kramatorsk, two civilians were injured by a FAB-250 bomb and 13 private houses and a car were damaged.

The occupiers dropped a FAB-250 bomb on Pokrovsk and also attacked the city with drones – there was a wounded person, 8 apartment buildings, 2 private houses, an educational institution, 2 garages and a civilian car were damaged.

In Rodynske, a five-storey residential building was damaged by hostile shelling.

The enemy shelled Lyman with Smerch multiple rocket launchers – 4 private houses, outbuildings and civilian vehicles were damaged. In Viroliubivka, a drone strike damaged a private house and a power line.

Other

 Vasyl Chynchyk, Head of the RMA, says that about 60 civilians still remain in Toretsk, where active urban fighting continues. Evacuation from the city is possible only with the help of the military, and they enter Toretsk in fog, poor visibility or at night,’ said.

Two communities in Donetsk oblast have announced the forced evacuation of children with their families. The minors will be taken out of 25 settlements in Pokrovsk and Volnovakha districts,’ said the head of the military administration Filashkin.

About 17,000 people, including four children, remain living in frontline Kostiantynivka. Every day, russian troops shell the city with aerial bombs and artillery. In three days, from 21 to 23 January, they dropped more than 25 bombs on the city. For security reasons, an extended curfew is in place in Kostiantynivka from 3pm to 11pm. During this four-hour period, people have to clean up their homes, buy food and fetch water, as the centralised water supply is intermittent.

Luhansk oblast

The CMA said that the enemy’s attack was repelled by our defenders from Bilohorivka. The enemy also tried to advance near Novoiehorivka. russians fired at the Ukrainian positions from artillery pieces and unmanned aerial vehicles. They sent 174 unmanned aerial vehicles to the positions of our soldiers.

Luhansk lacks equipment, garbage collection drivers and cleaners. At the local waste recycling centre, 40 % of the positions of specialised vehicle drivers are vacant. Another 30 % of vacancies are for garbage collectors. There is also a shortage of garbage trucks. As a result, workers are forced to work on weekends outside their schedule. Meanwhile, the third year of promises by the invaders to build six landfills in the so-called ‘lpr’ is passing, and waste continues to be transported from neighbouring regions of Russia to existing emergency landfills.

The problems with the functioning of the sewage system, as previously reported, are observed not only in the eastern neighbourhoods of Luhansk, where residents of 90% of the apartment blocks complain. The situation is similar in the centre. Local utilities do not maintain sewerage wells, which are currently overflowing. In some neighbourhoods, basements are already flooded. The occupation authorities do not respond to numerous appeals.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the Regional Military Administration, three people were killed as a result of an enemy attack on Kyiv Oblast. Four others sought medical assistance, one of whom was hospitalized with burns to the upper respiratory tract.

In Hlevakha, Fastiv region, debris fell on a ten-story residential building, causing a fire and destruction on the 6th and 7th floors. According to the State Emergency Service, 150 residents were evacuated from the building. A man born in 1988 died. A wounded man was rescued from the sixth floor, and a trapped woman was rescued from the ninth floor. Additionally, the Regional Military Administration reported that a family medicine clinic and two apartment buildings were damaged in the area, along with several cars.

In Brovary, debris from drones destroyed a private residential house, with the fire extinguished over an area of 120 square meters. A couple lost their lives due to the russian attack: a man born in 1966 and his wife born in 1965. Over 10 private houses, three cars, a shop, and an outbuilding were damaged in the city.

In Bucha, a local resident discovered an explosive device while walking in a forested park area. Emergency service pyrotechnicians arrived at the scene and identified the object as a 120-mm “NONA” mortar shell. The sappers removed and transported the shell to a designated site for further disposal and inspected the surrounding area for additional threats.

In Vorzel, they have begun implementing the Community Recovery and Development Centre project. This is a joint initiative between Bucha City Council and Ukrainian Red Cross. The project envisages the creation of a modern administrative and social centre in the heart of Vorzel and the establishment of Ukrainian Red Cross Hub. The centre will house the eldership, a library, an administrative service centre, and a social rehabilitation centre.

In Kyiv, the National Unifying Platform of Consolidated Communities “Side by Side” held a meeting. This initiative will promote reconstruction, development, and mutual support between regions of Ukraine. The event took place for the first time in this format on the Day of Unity of Ukraine with the participation of government officials, heads of regional military administrations, representatives of local self-government bodies, and the UNDP representation in Ukraine.

Reskilling Ukraine, in partnership with the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, announces a new intake for retraining programmes for women. Within the OnTrack programme, women can freely master the professions of heavy and passenger transport drivers. The training consists of online theory and practical classes in one of three cities in Ukraine: Kyiv, Kremenets, or Ternopil.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr, state awards – the Order “For Courage” III degree (posthumously) – were presented to the families of fallen soldiers. According to Zhytomyr City Council, the relatives of five servicemen received state awards.

A job fair for veterans was held in the regional centre, organised within the framework of the “Building Models of Veterans’ Reintegration in the Agro-Sector” project, implemented by Agrianalytics LLC with the support of the USAID Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRO) Program.

In Baranivka territorial community, the Day of Cooperation “Routes of Mental Health Services” took place. The event was aimed at creating a unified system of interaction between recipients and providers of mental health services, as well as informing the community about available services and opportunities for receiving assistance.

Sumy oblast

According to Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, russian military forces attacked two civilian vehicles by FPV-drones in Myropilia community. Three civilians were injured.

“Steel Border” brigade of the State Border Guard Service reported that border guards in Sumy destroyed a russian ammunition depot by “Vampire” drone strikes. Within a day, the UAV unit targeted and destroyed the enemy’s ammunition depot and personnel shelter.

The regional military administration reported that on 24 January, anti-aircraft guns shot down 14 enemy UAVs of “Shahed” type in the sky over Sumy Oblast. Since the beginning of 2025, 226 enemy drones have been destroyed by the region’s air defense units.

During the night, russians carried out two shellings of Krasnopillia community. Five explosions were recorded: four mortar explosions and the dropping of an explosive device from a UAV.

On 23 January, russians carried out 68 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 107 explosions. The enemy carried out UAV strikes (21 explosions), artillery shelling (14 explosions), mortar shelling (33 explosions), FPV-drone strikes (27 explosions), SPG-9 shelling, and GAB launches (3 explosions). As a result of the UAV attack in Krolevets community, a non-residential building was damaged. The attacks targeted 12 communities: Yunakivka, Myropilia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Putyvl, Nova Slobidka, Krolevets, Esman, Shalyhyne, Khutir-Mykhailivskyi, and Seredyna-Buda communities.

Head of the Regional Military Administration, Volodymyr Artiukh, informed that residents have been fully evacuated from 38 settlements in Konotop and Shostka regions of Sumy oblast. He stated that along the entire border of the region, up to 20,000 more people need to be evacuated. The Sumy and Shostka regions suffer the most from russian attacks.

Chernihiv oblast

According to the regional police, in Korukivka regions of Chernihiv oblast, on the night of 23-24 January, private houses and cars were damaged due to an attack by russian army strike drones.

State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that on 23 January russian army attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community: FPV-drone strike on Buchki, dropping an explosive device from a UAV on Yasnaya Polyana, 4 mortar strikes on Krasnyi Khutir.

Semenivka community: 7 FPV-drone strikes, 6 dropping explosive devices from a UAV, one artillery strike, 7 mortar strikes. The following settlements were under enemy fire: Mykolaivka, Zaliznyi Most, Mkhy, Hremiachka, Zarichchia, Tymonovychi.

Snovsk community: 2 artillery strikes on Hirsk, 2 FPV-drone strikes – Yeline, 7 drops on Khrinivka.

Horodnia community: the enemy dropped an explosive device from a UAV on Berylivka.

Chernihiv has received additional aid, thanks to cooperation with the German city of Aachen and the GIZ project “Improving Civil Protection and Recovery through Municipal Partnership in Ukraine”. The city’s public utilities will receive a modern sports ground, power tools, and a trailer.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

At night, the enemy attacked Nikopol region again. The occupiers shelled the region centre with Grad multiple rocket launchers. Businesses, a multi-storey building, a private house, an outbuilding, a market, a shop, a tractor, a car and a power line were damaged. russian troops also fired artillery at Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities. 

During the day, the occupiers fired several times at Nikopol region. They used artillery and launched kamikaze drones. They targeted the district centre, Myrove and Marhanets communities. Two private houses, an outbuilding, a petrol station, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged. 

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, 22-year-old senior soldier Vladyslav Hranenkin was paid the last tribute.

In 2020, he joined the National Guard of Ukraine and later signed a contract for military service. The soldier took part in the battles for Kyiv and Irpin, had the status of a combatant and a war veteran.

Poltava oblast

A plaque to the fallen soldier Volodymyr Vyazun was unveiled in Poltava. The event was timed to coincide with the anniversary of Volodymyr’s death, who died on 24 January 2024 in a battle near Makiivka. Volodymyr served as the chief sergeant of the 49th Separate Special Forces Brigade of the Carpathian Sich. During his life, he was awarded numerous decorations.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that in Cherkasy oblast, defenders destroyed 12 russian UAVs.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Efforts to address the aftermath of enemy shelling are ongoing in Zaporizhzhia. On 23 January, russian forces attacked the regional center twice using drones and missiles. As a result of the strikes, one person was killed, and 54 were injured. Over 80 apartment buildings and more than 30 private homes were destroyed or damaged.

According to Ivan Fedorov, the head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, 17 people injured in the attack on 23 January remain in hospitals. Their condition is assessed as moderate. Another 37 victims are receiving outpatient treatment, including a two-month-old boy.

Yesterday, the occupiers executed 405 strikes on seven settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy launched two airstrikes on Novodarivka. 226 UAVs of various modifications attacked Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Novodarivka, and Charivne. 13 MLRS attacks targeted Kamianske, Huliaipole, Novodanylivka, Shcherbaky, and Novodarivka. Additionally, 164 artillery strikes hit Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka. There were 733 reports of damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.

It is reported that the occupation authorities cut off water supplies in seven settlements in the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia oblast. One of the likely reasons is pipeline contamination due to poor maintenance.

Mykolaiv oblast

With the support of the GAUFonden and Ramboll foundations and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark, two houses were built in the Domanyivka community to be used as social housing for medical workers, police officers, people without their own housing, or those who have moved to the community from other settlements. In total, 25 such houses are planned to be constructed across Mykolaiv oblast. In addition, Danish partners from the UNOPS fund are helping establish a production facility for fuel pellets in the community. This initiative aims to address the issue of regional energy independence and the efficient use of local resources, as well as create jobs for military personnel returning from the frontlines.

In Mykolaiv, the National Police combat brigades “Liut” donated blood for their wounded comrades. According to the commander of the assault battalion “Tavr,” Oleksandr, 80% of the unit is currently undergoing recovery, while 20% continue to carry out combat missions.

Odesa oblast

As of 6 a.m. on 24 January, two enemy ships were present in the Black Sea, one of which is a carrier of “Kalibr” cruise missiles with a total salvo capacity of up to four missiles. There were six enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, including two carriers of “Kalibr” cruise missiles with a total salvo capacity of up to 22 missiles.

Over the past day, three vessels passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea in the interests of the russian federation, while another three ships entered the Sea of Azov.

Kherson oblast

Around 4:30pm, russians attacked Antonivka with a drone. A 44-year-old man sustained an explosive injury and shrapnel wounds to his legs.

At approximately 11:00 a.m., a russian drone attack in Antonivka injured two people. An 80-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were diagnosed with explosive injuries and shrapnel wounds.

Yesterday, the enemy shelled Antonivka, Stanislav, Shyroka Balka, Nezlamne, Shliakhove, Zelenivka, Sadove, Komyshany, Inzhenerne, Chervonyi Maiak, Beryslav, Burhunka, Veletenske, Vesele, Mykilske, Mykolaivka, Mykilski Dachi, Monastyrske, Novotiahynka, Zolota Balka, Zmiivka, Olhivka, Lvove, Ivanivka, Tiahynka, Tokarivka, Poniativka, Kozatske, Rozlyv, and the city of Kherson. As a result of these attacks, two apartment buildings, nine private houses, utility buildings, a garage, and private vehicles were damaged. Three people were injured due to russian aggression.

A woman injured on 21 January in a russian shelling of Beryslav sought medical assistance. The 68-year-old local resident was diagnosed with an explosive injury and a concussion.

During the past day, the aggressor carried out five offensive actions, most of them in the island zone at the mouth of Dnipro River. Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces eliminated 54 occupiers and destroyed the following: one BM-21 “Grad” MLRS, four guns, two self-propelled artillery systems, three mortars, one tank, 18 units of automotive and armored vehicles, two motorcycles, three boats, three electronic warfare systems, a surveillance camera, three generators, and a “Starlink” satellite terminal. They also struck seven dugouts and personnel quarters, two firing positions, an observation post, three UAV launch sites, nine UAV control antennas, and six communication antennas.

Volunteers from Kherson Regional Organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross, in collaboration with the UN World Food Program, distributed over 1,000 food kits to the most vulnerable population groups. The kits included essential food items: grains, flour, pasta, canned meat, oil, salt, and sugar.

Volyn oblast

The RMA reported that since the beginning of the year, simplified tax entrepreneurs in Volyn oblast have already paid UAH 16m in military fees.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 15 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old, 50 bags with grocery sets and 90 loaves of bread. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,018 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Valentyn Stefano and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 40 FPV drones to the Svoboda Battalion thanks to the budget funds.

Lviv oblast

During the morning attack, an enemy drone partially damaged a private house and a car in the village of Pidbirtsi, Lviv community. Windows of the house were broken. There were already flights near the same house in 2022. This is the 2nd time that the blast wave broke the windows, partially damaged the roof and the rooms inside. A crater formed nearby. No one was injured.

In the city of Rava-Ruska, the memory of 79 defenders of Lviv oblast was immortalized on memorial stands. During the event, clergymen held a memorial service and consecration.

Rivne oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the State Emergency Service. They discussed the involvement of veterans of Rivne oblast in the voluntary firefighting movement.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that students of a cooperative vocational college and volunteers received another batch of paraffin for making trench candles, which will be given to the military at the front.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during an air alert signal, the Air Defense Forces destroyed 5 enemy Shahed UAVs. The places where the debris fell are being determined. There are no injuries, deaths, or damage.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce (Turkey). Members of the Assembly of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce Lufti Kilik, Mehmet Yavuz Alkan and representatives of Turkish companies working in the field of alternative energy visited Bukovina on a working visit. They discussed the prospects for possible cooperation in the development of energy sustainability of Ukraine and energy independence of the oblast.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, met with William Thomson, Director of the Eurasian Affairs Department of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. They discussed Ukraine’s progress in the fight against corruption.

Iryna Mudra, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, met with Lilia Gretasdottir, the Council of Europe Representative responsible for the implementation of human rights, justice and legal cooperation standards. They discussed cooperation with the Council of Europe to adapt Ukrainian legislation to European standards.

A panel discussion titled Kidnapped to Kill: russia’s Weaponization of Ukrainian Children was held at the Ukraine House in Davos, focusing on the forced deportation of Ukrainian children by russia and their militarization. It was attended by Dariia Zarivna, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President and Operations Director of Bring Kids Back UA, as well as leading international experts, human rights activists, and political figures.
