War in Ukraine today: latest news, 13 January, 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1055 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The enemy does not stop trying to advance into the depths of Ukraine’s territory. To date, the enemy has attacked the positions of the Defence Forces 94 times. It is most active towards Pokrovsk.  

Russian artillery shelling affected the border areas of Sumy oblast, in particular the settlements of Mezenivka, Porozok, Baranivka and Riasne.  

The enemy attacked our positions twice towards Kupiansk near Lozova and Dvorichna, both of which are still ongoing.  

Towards Lyman, enemy units continue to attack in the areas of Novoserhiivka, Zelenyi Hai, Pershotravneve, Makiivka, Zarichne and Terny. Ukrainian troops have repelled nine enemy attacks in this area, and another firefight is currently underway.  

Ukrainian defenders repelled three enemy attacks in the vicinity of Bilohorivka towards Siversk.  

Towards Kramatorsk, the occupants attacked 11 times in the area of Chasovyi Yar and Stupochky, and five more engagements are still ongoing.  

So far, 12 hostile attacks have taken place towards Toretsk. The enemy attacked near Bila Hora, Krymske and Toretsk. Our defenders are fighting back with dignity, and one firefight is currently underway.  

The situation is the hottest towards Pokrovsk. The invaders have already launched 40 attacks on the positions of our defenders near the settlements of Baranivka, Zelene Pole, Yelyzavetivka, Tarasivka, Nova Poltava, Novotoretske, Lysivka, Myrnohrad, Zelene, Novyi Trud, Pokrovsk, Shevchenko, Udachne, Novovasylivka, Uspenivka, Petropavlivka, Novoandriivka, Slovianka, Sribne, Kurakhove and Yantarne. The defence forces repelled 26 enemy attacks, 14 of which are still ongoing.  

Towards Novopavlivka, the invaders attacked Ukrainian troops’ positions five times near Rozlyv, Vremivka and Neskuchne, and ten engagements are still ongoing.  

The enemy did not conduct any active operations towards Kharkiv, Huliaipole, Orikhiv and Kherson.  

In Kursk oblast, our defenders repelled ten invaders’ attacks, in addition, the enemy launched two air strikes, dropping two guided aerial bombs, and carried out 215 artillery attacks.  

There are no significant changes in other sectors at the moment. 

19,546 Ukrainian children have been deported to russia since the beginning of the full-scale war. This figure may be much higher, as it is impossible to establish the exact number. The russian side deliberately conceals information about children, even from international organisations. On World Children’s Day, Oscar-winning actress and UNITED24 ambassador Hilary Swank called on the world not to remain silent and to spread the word about russia’s horrific crimes against Ukrainian children.

Dmytro Lazutkin, Spokesman of the Ministry of Defence, reported that in total, 36,000 people work in the TCC across Ukraine. 7,000 of them are civilians, 3,000 are women, and more than 18,000 are of limited suitability. Many of them received the status of partially fit on the battlefield, having fought at the front. T

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The General Staff reported that as of 4pm, two russian attacks continue towards Kupiansk, near Dvorichna and Lozova. In the Liman sector, Ukrainian defence forces repelled attacks near Novoserhiivka, Zelenyi Hai, Stepy (formerly Pershotravneve) within Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy stormed the positions of our troops four times near the towns of Vovchansk and Kozacha Lopan.

Towards Kupiansk, there were eight enemy attacks yesterday. Ukrainian defence forces repelled assaults near Petropavlivka and Pishchane.

The russians are trying to take advantage of the weather conditions and amass near Dvorichna and Masiutivka. Yurii Fedorenko, Commander of the Achilles Battalion of the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade, said that there is a Ukrainian flag over Novomlynsk.

The russian army is trying to break through the Ukrainian defence line towards Lyman-Kupiansk using all available weapons. Maksym Taran, Spokesman of the Rubizh Brigade, said that the assaults are carried out in small tactical groups.

Attacks

Kharkiv police reported that a 41-year-old man sustained explosive wounds as a result of an FPV drone strike on Vesele at around 8:20am. A residential building was damaged

At 9:31pm, Valky of Bohodukhiv region was attacked. The wreckage of a Shahed UAV fell on the territory of a civilian enterprise as a result of air defence.

 At 6pm, russians attacked Kupiansk. A 70-year-old man was killed in the shelling near the territory of a civilian enterprise.

 At 5:35pm, russians attacked Vilkhuvatka village of Kupiansk region. They shelled the outskirts of the settlement with KABs, no damage or casualties were reported.

At 1pm, russian troops fired from MLRS at Kindrashivka village, Kupiansk region. The shelling damaged 1 private house and 1 garage.

At 10:25am, russian troops launched an FPV drone attack on Kindrashivka village, Kupiansk region. There was no information on casualties or damage.

 Around 8am, russian troops shelled Senkove village, Kupiansk region, damaging 1 private house and 1 garage.

During the week, one man in Kupiansk was killed by russian shelling. It also became known about the death of a 50-year-old woman: she died in hospital after the shelling of Dvorichna on 26 December.

Other

As a result of increased evacuation measures, 2 people (including 1 child) were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The General Staff reported that yesterday the Defence Forces repelled 58 attacks towards Pokrovsk near Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Zelene, Promin, Novyi Trud, Pokrovsk, Udachne, Kotlyne, Novovasylivka, Sribne, Petropavlivka, Novoandriivka, Dachne, Shevchenko and Yantarne.

Oleksandr Nevidomyi, Рead of the communications department of the 46th separate airmobile brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reported that the russian army continues to try to capture the entire village of Kurakhove. For this purpose, Russian units are storming in small groups, using UAVs, artillery, and MLRS.

Maksym Bilousov, Spokesman for the 60th separate mechanised Ingulets brigade, said that russian troops are constantly attacking towards Lyman. It happens that during one assault, one soldier is walking without weapons and means of protection, and behind him is a protected and well-trained soldier who sees where the fire starts on the one in front, and then begins to attack this point.

Attacks

Yesterday police recorded 3,737 hostile attacks on the frontline and residential areas. Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Lyman, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Rodynske, Toretsk, Komar, Novobakhmetieve and Tikhonivka were under attack. 51 civilian objects were destroyed, including 41 residential buildings.

Russian troops shelled Pokrovsk with artillery, wounding a civilian and damaging an apartment building.

The enemy dropped a FAB-250 bomb on Myrnohrad, damaging a hospital and an apartment building.

Russia attacked Rodynske with drones – three private houses and an outbuilding were damaged.

The occupiers sent three guided aerial bombs (FAB-250 and two UMPB D-30SN) to Kramatorsk, damaging three apartment buildings and two private houses, a veterinary clinic, and a power line.

Russians attacked Kostiantynivka with two FAB-250 bombs and artillery, damaging a private house.

In Lyman, 9 private houses and 4 outbuildings were damaged as a result of shelling from Smerch MLRS.

Other

Explosive experts of Donetsk police defuse unexploded warhead of enemy drone

An explosive device was discovered in Kramatorsk region after another russian attack. Police officers destroyed the munition through a controlled explosion.

In the first days of 2025 alone, Donetsk bomb squad responded 69 times to the sites of explosions and enemy shelling and conducted 4 controlled destruction of enemy UAVs and drone drops

In 2024, the explosive ordnance disposal unit made more than 1,800 official visits and destroyed almost 500 pieces of extremely dangerous ammunition.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy continues to exert pressure towards Lyman, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to hold their positions. Thus, the russians conducted another attack near Makiivka. They fired eight times from various types of artillery in this area of the frontline. They sent 160 unmanned aerial vehicles towards the fortifications of the Ukrainian military.

In Lysychansk, the occupiers once again tried to turn on the centralised water supply. And again, to no avail. To be more precise, there is a result – continuous gusts of the system. And we are not talking about apartments that are not accessible due to the absence of owners. The water pipes, which have been restored for more than 2.5 years, have failed.

In Siverskodonetsk, builders advise residents to refuse low-quality showcase repairs.

Such recommendations were given before the start of work on one of the high-rise buildings. They advised residents to draw up written statements on the possibility of not replacing the surviving windows, doors and radiators. Those who do not do so are promised quick dismantling and installation with the corresponding result, which everyone has seen repeatedly when contractors leave apartments dilapidated.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Mykola Kalashnyk, Acting Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that four private houses, a dormitory, a medical facility, as well as three cars and an ambulance were damaged in Kyiv oblast as a result of the fall of the wreckage of downed russian drones. The alarm lasted for almost 5 hours in the evening and at night. There were no casualties among the population.

Aja Labib, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Crisis Preparedness and Management, Civil Protection and Equality, met with Andrii Danyk, Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. They discussed the implementation of joint projects in the field of civil protection. On the territory of one of the fire and rescue units in Kyiv oblast, the delegation got acquainted with the modern machinery and equipment used by SES specialists on a daily basis. During the meeting, Andrii Danik told the foreign partners about the specifics of the Service’s work under martial law.

The regional military administration announced that an inspection of the construction of military engineering and fortification structures in Kyiv oblast was carried out. They are ready for service and use in defence tasks. All work was carried out under the coordination of the military command.

In 2024, Kyiv Regional Employment Centre employed more than two thousand internally displaced persons. Among the combatants, 208 people were employed.

Tymur Tkachenko, Head of Kyiv Regional Employment Centre, informed that in 2025, Kyiv plans to install a backup power supply for 100 traffic lights. Out of 737 traffic lights in the capital, only 327 have backup power. Currently, 268 traffic lights remain at risk during power outages.

1,000 humanitarian food parcels were delivered by Kyiv oblast to residents of Sumy oblast. Each set includes food and hygiene products made in Ukraine. All regions of oblast and socially responsible businesses joined this charity mission.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that the Air Defence Forces were operating in Zhytomyr oblast during an air alert at night. Drones were shot down. The downed drones caused damage to infrastructure.

Zhytomyroblenerho reported that on 13 January in the morning, emergency power outages were used in Zhytomyr oblast due to an attack by russian drones.

Korostyshiv Special School trained staff to provide first aid. The initiative is aimed at creating a safe learning environment and ensuring a quick response to possible emergencies. The practical training was conducted by experts from the Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine Centre of Zhytomyr Regional Council.

Sumy oblast

 According to the regional military administration, in the skies over Sumy oblast, air defense units shot down 14 enemy Shahed drones. Since the beginning of 2025, air defense units in the region have destroyed a total of 109 russian drones.

The RMA reported that russian drone crashed on the territory of a critical infrastructure facility in Putyvl community. As a result, 185 settlements in Konotop and Sumy regions were left without power. Emergency restoration work is ongoing. Critical infrastructure and essential services have switched to backup power.

During night and morning, russians carried out 12 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 30 explosions by different types of weapons. The attacks targeted Yunakivka, Krasnopillia, Khmeliv, and Seredyna-Buda communities. In Seredyna-Buda community, as result of shelling, one civilian person was injured. 

In the evening of 12 January, russian army struck residential areas and a children’s wellness center in Sumy. Fires broke out at the impact sites, and firefighters worked to extinguish them simultaneously at multiple locations. As a result of the debris from a Shahed drone, one of the pavilions of the wellness center was partially destroyed, with almost all windows and doors shattered. Additionally, fragments of the UAV damaged a private household.

The RMA informed that in Sumy oblast, three people were injured on 12 January at 3:15pm, as a result of an attack by russian forces on a passenger bus in Myropillia community. The regional center for emergency medical aid and disaster medicine reported that one of the injured, a 42-year-old woman, sustained a traumatic brain injury and multiple penetrating shrapnel wounds.

The RMA announced that on 12 January, russians carried out 68 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 143 explosions. The attacks targeted 10 communities: Sumy, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, Shostka, and Seredyna-Buda communities. The enemy carried out attacks using mortars (67 explosions), MLRS (19 explosions), FPV-drones (28 explosions), dropped VOG grenades from UAVs (24 explosions), and launched guided aerial bombs (5 explosions).

According to Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for State Border Guard Service, in border regions adjacent to russia, attempts by russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups (SRGs) to infiltrate Ukrainian territory continue to be recorded. He emphasized that the primary task of border guards is to detect such groups promptly and inflict losses to expel them from Ukrainian territory.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in Krasnopillia, the police special unit “White Angel” evacuated two people along with their dog, Volt, from under enemy fire. This settlement is under constant enemy shelling, with daily attacks destroying homes and endangering lives.

The RMA reported that Sumy oblast received humanitarian aid from Kirovohrad oblast. 800 food packages will be distributed among the population living in the border areas.

160 households in Chernechchyna, Okhtyrka, and Velyka Pysarivka territorial communities have already received assistance in the form of liquefied gas cylinders.

Chernihiv oblast

On 12 January russian army attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast. In total, 83 explosions were recorded.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community.

2 strikes by FPV-drones, 2 mortar strikes and 4 – from artillery in the area of Mykhalchyna Sloboda.

Semenivka community.

20 drops of explosive devices from UAVs, 4 strikes by FPV-drones, 24 mortar strikes, 19 hits by artillery. The villages of Hremiachka, Medvedivka, Tymonovychi, Zarechchia, Leonivka, Prohres, Liskivshchyna, Bleshnia, Kostobobriv, Mkhy, Halahanivka were subjected to shelling.

Head of Chernihiv RMA Viacheslav Chaus, over the past week, russian army attacked the oblast 123 times. During this period, 349 explosions were recorded in 25 settlements. In particular, 27 airstrikes by “Shakheds” and FPV-drones. According to him, Semenivka is under constant artillery fire. There, the russian military wounded four people, destroyed the homes of residents of the city, businesses, non-economic structures, and cars.

Over the past week, from 6 to 12 January, 285 people left the constantly shelled border area in Chernihiv oblast. In particular, 277 left Semenivka, 50 of them are children. According to the Head of Chernihiv RMA, Viacheslav Chaus, 150 people moved to the neighboring Koriukivka region, 106 were settled in modular towns in the suburbs of Chernihiv. People also moved to Pryluchchyna, Sosnychchyna and other oblasts.

In Chernihiv oblast, as of early January, 32% of the total number of those wishing to join the Defense Forces through recruiting centers are women. This is one of the highest percentages in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Army recruiting center reported. The highest percentage of applications from women is in the following regions: Khmelnytskyi – 37%, Ternopil – 38%, Chernivtsi – 48%.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

In the evening and overnight, the enemy attacked Nikopol region twice, targeting Marhanets community by artillery and a kamikaze drone. There were no casualties reported.

Air defence forces in the oblast were active in the evening. Defenders from the Air Command East shot down 2 enemy UAVs.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region 3 times, launching kamikaze drones at the regional centre and Pokrov community. There were no injuries reported.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Defender Maksym Zelmanchuk from Vinnytsia oblast was awarded the Cross of Bravery for his heroism in combat during operations in Pokrovsk region.

Senior Soldier Oleksandr Halan from Vinnytsia oblast also received the Cross of Bravery. His coordinated actions and those of his group during a combat mission helped prevent casualties among Ukrainian soldiers and secure their positions.

Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that vehicles, quadcopters and drones are being procured in response to military requests. Vinnytsia City Council Executive Committee announced 3 new tenders for the purchase of vehicles, quadcopters and FPV drones on the Prozorro online platform.

Kirovohrad oblast

Kirovohrad oblast was under a massive enemy drone attack overnight. Mobile fire groups countered the assault.

 

In Oleksandrivka community, repairs to damaged houses have already begun following the enemy attack. Roofs have been repaired using local funds and new windows ordered promptly.

Poltava oblast

Lubny paid tribute to serviceman Ivan Doroshenko. He died from injuries on 9 January 2025, at a military hospital in Kyiv. In December 2024, he sustained severe wounds during an artillery strike.

 

According to the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, starting 29 January, internally displaced persons renting housing in Poltava oblast will be eligible for rental subsidies. The amount will be calculated individually for each family.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, reported that air defence forces were active overnight, destroying 8 russian UAVs.

On 13 January, Uman paid tribute to defender Oleksandr Chernysh, who was killed on 2 January 2025, during an artillery strike.

Also, Cherkasy paid tribute to a 43-year-old National Guard Soldier Oleksandr Petukhov, who was killed on 3 January 2025, due to a kamikaze drone attack.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the occupiers carried out 412 strikes on 14 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy conducted an airstrike on Temyrivka. 250 UAVs of various modifications targeted Zaporizhzhia, Lobkove, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, Novodarivka, and Olhivske. Seven MLRS attacks struck Novodanylivka, Mykilske, and Mala Tokmachka. Additionally, 154 artillery strikes hit Stepnohirsk, Lobkove, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, Novodarivka, Robotyne, and Olhivske. Reports indicate damage to 27 residential buildings and infrastructure facilities. Two people were injured as a result of the russian attack on Zaporizhzhia.

Soldiers of the 3rd Operational Brigade “Spartan” of the National Guard of Ukraine detected and neutralized communication antennas of russian army personnel. The brigade’s aerial reconnaissance unit struck the target using UAV-dropped munitions and FPV drones. The destruction of these communication antennas significantly disrupted the enemy’s communication on the frontline.

Mykolaiv oblast

During the night of 13 January, air defense forces destroyed four Shahed 131/136 drones over Mykolaiv oblast. Debris from one of the downed drones damaged five private houses in city of Voznesensk. There were no casualties.

Yesterday, 12 January, at 10:30am, the enemy attacked the village of Solonchaky in Kutsurub community using an FPV drone. A 71-year-old man was injured in the attack. He was hospitalized, and as of this morning, his condition is stable.

Odesa oblast

As of 6am on 13 January, there was one enemy vessel carrying Kalibr cruise missiles in the Black Sea, with a total salvo capacity of up to four missiles. There were seven enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, two of which were carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles, with a combined salvo capacity of up to 22 missiles.

Kherson oblast

Today, russian troops shelled Komyshany. A 57-year-old woman who was outside sustained a blast injury and a concussion.

At noon, russian troops attacked Antonivka using a UAV. Two people were injured. A 55-year-old man reportedly sustained a blast injury. A 42-year-old woman suffered a blast injury and shrapnel wound to her leg. She was hospitalized in serious condition.

Yesterday, the enemy attacked Antonivka, Nadniprianske, Prydniprovske, Bilozerka, Nadezhdivka, Mykilske, Molodizhne, Komyshany, Inzhenerne, Sadove, Veletenske, Shyroka Balka, Stanislav, Oleksandrivka, Beryslav, Dudchany, Burhunka, Shliakhove, Novoraisk, Tiahynka, Ivanivka, Tokarivka, Monastyrske, Lvove, Vesele, Kozatske, Olhivka, Yantarne, Mykolaivka, Tomyna Balka, Novoberyslav, Kizomys, Novooleksandrivka, Zolota Balka, Zmiivka, and the city of Kherson. As a result of the shelling, 10 private houses, 4 apartment buildings, critical infrastructure facilities, an auxiliary room of an administrative building, and a car were damaged. 10 people were injured due to Russian aggression.

Later, Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that two men injured in yesterday’s shelling of Bilozerka sought medical attention at a hospital. At the time of the attack, the men, aged 35 and 36, were in an apartment. They sustained blast injuries and concussions. Additionally, a woman injured in yesterday evening’s russian UAV attack on Antonivka also sought medical attention. The 53-year-old victim suffered a blast injury, concussion, and acute stress reaction.

It is reported occupying forces attacked Velykyi Potiomkinskyi Island in Dnipro estuary and attempted assault operations. Failing to achieve success and suffering personnel losses, the enemy retreated to their initial positions. Over the past day, the Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine eliminated 68 enemy personnel and destroyed 114 units of russian weapons and military equipment. Additionally, 7 personnel shelters, an observation post, ammunition storage facilities, fuel and lubricant depots, logistics facilities, and a UAV launch site were hit.

The Unit NGO, in collaboration with the Council for Internally Displaced Persons under Beryslav Regional Administration, delivered humanitarian aid to the residents of Novokamianka. The shipment included 160 hygiene kits and over a hundred pairs of men’s and children’s shoes.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Military Unit A 34493 received 3 Airspy R2 SDR receivers, 3 Uniden SDS-200 scanning receivers, 12 Acer Nitro V15-41 laptops and 15 Romsat TVs from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

38 students of Kherson oblast went on a 10-day trip to the Zakarpattia oblast. Recreation was organized for students in the Children’s Lucky Land medical and social center. Children from Kiselyvka, Velika Oleksandrivka, Kochubeivka, Zahradivka, Orlovyi and Novobratskyi will undergo rehabilitation there.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA reported that in December, 645 IDP were registered in the oblast.

Lviv oblast

In Lviv oblast, a memorial plaque was opened in memory of Chief Sergeant Ihor Miler, with the call sign Prague, Commander of the 24th UAV Crew of the Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo. He was killed on 20 July, 2024 while performing a combat mission in the city of Chasiv Yar. He was buried in his hometown of Komarno.

Volodymyr Kozar, gunner of the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade, from Strii region, was awarded the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). He was killed on 10 March, 2023.

Rivne oblast

RMA representatives continue to conduct field meetings in communities with veterans and their family members. Last meet took place in Nemovychy, Sarnen region. They discussed possibilities of treatment and rehabilitation, benefits, provision of administrative services, employment, training of defenders.

The transformation of the Defense of Ukraine subject in Rivne oblast continues. Last year, the state allocated UAH 84m for equipping cells for Rivne oblast. Procurement is ongoing.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that in the community, 295 servicemen received financial assistance for treatment during the program

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during an air alarm signal, the Air Defense Forces destroyed 2 enemy UAVs of the Shahed type. There were no injuries, deaths or destruction.

Khmelnytskyi City Council provided financial assistance to 13 families of fallen Heroes. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 320,000.

Chernivtsi oblast

Philanthropists, international organizations and Ukrzaliznytsia organized an excursion on an old steam locomotive for children. This steam train worked on the railway in the 1950s, and now the retro locomotive is a fun attraction for children.

Dovile Sakaliene, Lithuanian Defense Minister, announced that this week, the country will send 4,500 drones worth €5m to Ukraine.

The European Commission allocated an additional €148m for humanitarian aid for Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Moldova. €140m allocated for humanitarian projects directly in Ukraine.

Kakha Tilidze, Georgian soldier, who fought in the ranks of the Armed Forces, was killed during the russian war against Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the russian federation into Ukraine in February 2022, approximately 70 Georgian soldiers who fought on the side of the Armed Forces were killed at the front.
