War in Ukraine today: latest news, 15 October, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 965th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The situation on the frontline remains difficult. Ukraine’s defence forces are making efforts to disrupt the russian aggressor’s offensive plans and destroy its personnel and equipment.  

In total, 96 combat engagements have taken place since the beginning of the day. Most of the fighting was recorded towards Kurakhove.  

In Sumy oblast, Obody and Basivka suffered from enemy artillery and mortar attacks. In addition, russians launched airstrikes with anti-aircraft gunships near Tovstodubove, Svarkove and Yunakivka.  

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy unsuccessfully stormed the positions of our units near Vovchansk and Starytsia.  

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attacked the positions of our troops 18 times near Kucherivka, Novoosynove, Hrusivka, Pishchane, Hlushkivka, Lozova, Kruhliakivka and Vyshneve. 11 firefights are still ongoing. Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold the line.  

Towards Lyman, with the support of attack aircraft, the invading army launched 13 attacks on Ukrainian positions near Hrekivka, Makiivka, Nevske, Zarichne and Torske. Nine of the attacks ended, and four are ongoing.  

Towards Kramatorsk, the Armed Forces repelled two russian attacks near Kalynivka and Predtechyne.  

Towards Toretsk, there were seven hostile attacks near Toretsk, Dachne and Shcherbynivka. Ukrainian troops stopped all of them. The aggressor is mainly concentrating its efforts on Toretsk, actively using bombers.  

Towards Pokrovsk, the invaders have made 14 attempts to push our defenders from their positions near Novotroitske, Myroliubivka, Promen, Krasnyi Yar, Selydove and Krutyi Ya. The defence forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 11 enemy attacks, with three combat engagements still ongoing. At the same time, enemy aircraft bombed Sukha Balka, dropping three guided bombs.  

Towards Kurakhove, the invaders attacked 30 times towards Kreminna Balka, Novodmytrivka, Tsukuryne, Novoselydivka, Heorhiivka, Kostiantynivka, Antonivka and Katerynivka. Sixteen attempts by the occupants to advance have already been repelled.

Towards Vremivka, there was one firefight near Razdolne.

Towards Orikhiv, the occupation forces attacked in vain near Mala Tokmachka.

Towards Kherson, the enemy stormed the positions of our defenders once.

The operation in Kursk oblast continues. Enemy aircraft continue to strike with guided aerial bombs at our territory. To date, there have been five air strikes involving eight KABs.

Taras Melnychuk, the government’s representative in the Verkhovna Rada, reported that the Cabinet of Ministers approved a pilot project on recruitment through the Diia portal. Participants in the pilot project will be citizens of Ukraine aged 18 to 55 who have a taxpayer registration card number, are not in military service and have expressed a desire to participate in the pilot project. The electronic recruitment will include the selection of a military unit and speciality, and the submission of an application for contractual military service using the Diia portal.

Over the past year, the Ministry of Defence has approved 17 models of demining equipment for use in the Armed Forces. Five of them were made in Ukraine. The foreign demining equipment that has been codified includes Croatian chain and roller trawls, German integrated mine protection and mine detection systems, British cutter and roller trawls, demining complexes, and American armoured vehicles.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Ukrainian troops repelled 50 russian attacks towards Kurakhove yesterday. The occupiers concentrated their efforts near Heorhiivka, Antonivka and Novodmitrivka.  

There were another 40 russian attacks towards Pokrovsk. The russian occupation troops were putting pressure, specifically, near Hrodivka, Myrnohrad, Selydove, Promen and Lysivka.  

Towards Lyman, Ukrainian defenders repelled 37 russian attacks. The occupiers concentrated pressure on Balka Zhuravka, where there were 8 enemy assaults in a day.

Kharkiv oblast

Police evacuated 35 residents of Kupiansk region. The evacuation of civilians in Lyptsi community is also ongoing. Currently, 71 residents remain in the community, living in Lyptsi, Slobozhanske, Borshchova, Vesele and Peremoha villages.

The General Staff reported on the situation at 4pm saying that towards Kupiansk, russia attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops 18 times near Kucherivka, Novoosynove, Hrusivka, Pishchane, Hlushkivka, Lozova, Kruhliakivka and Vyshneve. According to the report, 11 firefights are ongoing. Towards Kharkiv, there were assaults near Vovchansk and Starytsia.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reported that at 3:36pm, the enemy attacked Podoly village, Kupiansk region. An enemy drone strike was recorded in the garden of a household. There were no casualties.

At 10:15am, the enemy attacked 2nd microdistrict garage cooperative in Kivsharivka village of Kupiansk region. 50 garages were damaged.

Towards Kharkiv, two hostile attacks took place near Tykhe.

Towards Kupiansk, the invaders launched 26 attacks yesterday. Defence forces stopped all enemy assaults near Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kruhliakivka, Kolisnykivka, Holubivka, Petropavlivka, Pershotravneve, Lozova and Vyshneve.

Andrii Kanashevych, Head of Kupiansk Regional Military Administration, said that the mandatory evacuation of children from Borova community, as well as the mandatory evacuation of all civilians from the four communities in Kupiansk region, was introduced in the summer. The evacuation measures are now being intensified due to the deteriorating situation on the left bank of the Oskil River in Kupiansk region.  About 4,000 people remain on the left bank, including more than 300 in Kupiansk.

Yevhen Koliada, Head of the Humanitarian Coordination Centre, said taht almost 2,000 people have been evacuated in Kharkiv oblast since September. The main area of evacuation is currently the left bank of the Oskil River in Kupiansk.

Donetsk oblast

Horbunov, Head of the RMA, reported that one person was wounded during the shelling in Kostiantynivka today between 11 and 11:20am. The facade of a private house, a car and power lines were damaged.

Yesterday 5 people were injured as a result of russian attacks in Donetsk oblast and police are documenting war crimes. Also russian troops fired 1,893 times at the frontline and residential areas.

Explosions occurred in 6 settlements: Kurakhove, Pokrovsk, Siversk, Zakitne, Riznykivka and Shakhtarske.

25 civilian objects, including 22 residential buildings, were damaged.

The russians dropped four FAB-250 bombs with an UMPK module on Zakitne, injuring a civilian and damaging 10 private houses.

The occupiers struck Shakhtarske with an UMPB D30 SN bomb, injuring three residents and damaging four private houses and an educational institution.

There is a wounded man in Riznykivka, which was shelled by the enemy with artillery, and a private house was damaged.

Russia attacked Kurakhove with four artillery shells, damaging an apartment building and an administrative building.

Five private houses in Pokrovsk and an apartment building in Siversk were damaged by enemy shelling,.

Anastasiia Bobovnikova, Spokeswoman of the Luhansk operational-strategic group, reported that the russian army is not preparing for combat operations in winter and is trying to advance as far as possible before the cold weather. They are trying to make the most of the dry weather in Donetsk oblast, so they are using artillery and drones, hoping to achieve some goals before the frost. They are not taking any active measures to prepare for the cold season, unlike the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The occupiers also advanced within Toretsk yesterday and are trying to find weaknesses in the defence of Chasiv Yar.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy is making every effort to push Ukrainian troops out of the Luhansk region. According to the Regional Military Administration, active hostilities are ongoing in Bilohorivka, near Balka Zhuravka and in Serebrianka forest. The enemy is sending reserves into the battle, but Ukrainian soldiers are inflicting significant losses on the occupiers.

Lyman frontline is one of the three hottest areas today. Our troops are holding the line, holding back the enemy and inflicting significant losses. The occupiers tried to attack near Novoiehorivka, Novoliubivka, Hrekivka and Balka Zhuravka. They fired at these settlements with artillery and sent unmanned aerial vehicles.

On the section of the road between Siverskodonetsk and Novoaidar, russians are intensively checking men. They say they are looking for particularly dangerous criminals. But, as always, they are paying close attention to people of military age.

In the remote areas of Lysychansk, which was seized in 2022, life has virtually stopped. In some places, gas supply was restored, and then they were forgotten for two years. For example, residents of high-rise buildings located next to the former rubber goods plant. They are already happy to have industrial water delivered, as the last time drinking water was delivered to most of them was in the summer. The centralised water supply system, like the heating system, has not been repaired. There is no telephone connection either. To call an ambulance, one has to travel 7 to 10km.

The russians in the so-called “lpr” will postpone the fulfilment of their promises – in Aidar (formerly Novopskov), they will try to repair the hospital by 2030.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that another night alert in Kyiv oblast was announced due to an attack by enemy UAVs. The targets were destroyed by air defence forces. There were no hits to critical and residential infrastructure. There were no casualties.

The Mobile Rescue Centre of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine informed that in Vyshhorod region, near the village of Yasnohorodka, a resident found a suspicious object in the forest. The sappers identified the dangerous object as an SD-1 cluster bomb left over from the Second World War. The bomb was carefully transported for further destruction. Also in Novosilky village of Vyshhorod region, a forester found a VOG-25 grenade launcher. In Bucha region, mushroom pickers found the remains of a rocket in the forest near the village of Moshchun.

The regional military administration reported that Kyiv Regional Centre for Preparing the Population for National Resistance has completed a shortened 36-hour course to prepare the population for national resistance. More than 50 residents of Kyiv oblast received certificates of completion. The programme covers 6 areas of training. It includes tactical and firearms training, first aid training, mine safety, and terrain orientation.

In 2024, more than 400 employers in Kyiv oblast received compensation for employing internally displaced persons. The total number of internally displaced persons who were employed was 656. During the martial law period, the monthly compensation of employers’ salary costs for each employed internally displaced person is UAH 8,000.

Ihor Smelianskyi, CEO of Ukrposhta, announced that the company had donated a demining machine, which was funded through the sale of Pes Patron charity stamps. More than 200,000 Ukrainians joined the largest donation in Ukrposhta’s history. The vehicle was being built by a Ukrainian manufacturer for six months. It will be used in Chernihiv sector in a humanitarian demining unit.

The RMA reported that 90 children were adopted in Kyiv oblast this year. Also during this period, 391 children were placed in foster families, family-type children’s homes, and families of guardians. According to the Ministry of Social Policy, in 2023, Ukraine reached the adoption rates that were in place before the full-scale invasion.

Kyiv Invincibility Marathon, which took place on 12 and 13 October on the Trukhaniv Island, brought together 10,200 participants. These included military personnel, veterans undergoing rehabilitation, children, amateur runners and professionals. During the two days of the marathon, the organisers managed to raise UAH 10m in charitable contributions, most of which will go to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Kyiv Independent’s documentary about the sexual crimes of the occupiers won at Prague Film Festival. The festival took place in Prague from 8 to 12 October and highlighted the important role of journalism in modern society. The author of the documentary, Olesia Bida, stressed that Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have documented 292 cases of sexual violence committed by russian soldiers, although this figure is probably only a fraction of the total.

Zhytomyr oblast

The oblast State Emergency Service reported that pyrotechnics destroyed three munitions. In the first case, an explosive object was spotted in a field by local farmers, and two more such objects were found by villagers on a private plot of land. SES experts identified the items as artillery shells and destroyed them by detonating them in a specially designated area.

The State Ecological Inspectorate of Polissia region informed that during a massive missile attack on Ukraine on 26 August 2024, a fire broke out in Zhytomyr due to a hit on a critical infrastructure facility. As a result, pollutants were released into the air. The environmental damage amounted to more than UAH 3m. Currently, the Ecological Inspectorate is preparing materials for submission to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, prosecutors, and law enforcement agencies to enter information into the register of war crimes committed by russia against the environment.

On 14 October, in Zhytomyr, Lyceum №10 raised UAH 87,650 for the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the Pumpkin Fest charity autumn fair. The festival programme included a pumpkin porridge competition, sales of goodies, masterclasses and an exhibition of the lyceum’s crafts.

Sumy oblast

On 14 October, russians carried out 16 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 28 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, Shalyhyne, Esman communities.

Yunakivka community: the enemy fired by barrel artillery (5 explosions).

Hlukhiv community: airstrikes by KAB (5 explosions).

Shalyhyne community: community (3 explosions).

Myropilia community: the russians hit by barrel artillery (5 explosions).

Esman community: hit by an FPV-drone (1 explosion), mortar shelling (1 explosion).

Velyka Pysarivka community: explosive devices were dropped from an unmanned aerial vehicle (2 explosions).

Khotin community: the enemy fired by self-propelled guns (3 explosions) and mortars (3 explosions).

Sumy Regional Military Administration informed that six communities from Rivne, Ternopil, and Kyiv oblasts signed a memorandum to restore russian-damaged facilities in the border area of Sumy oblast. The first facilities to be restored include the Orliatko kindergarten in Konotop and a multi-story building in Okhtyrka.

From 11 to 13 October, international sports competitions “Strong Spirit’s Games” for veterans and wounded military personnel took place in Madrid, Spain, as part of the “Arnold Classic Europe” festival. Ukraine was represented by 50 veterans, including Mykola Zarytskyi from Sumy oblast. Mykola’s results at the “Strong Spirit’s Games” include five medals: two gold in rowing on a simulator (100 seconds) and in rowing on the “Air Bike,” one silver in team rowing (100 seconds), and two bronze in rowing (100 metres) and kettlebell lifting.

On 15 October, Sumy community bid farewell to Ukrainian defender, Junior Sergeant Serhii Savenko. The soldier was honoured with a ceremony at the Church of St. George the Victorious in Sumy.

Chernihiv oblast

The russian army attacked two border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka, and Horodnia communities, with a total of 44 explosions recorded.

Semenivska community:

– towards Arkhypivka: five hits, probably by a 120mm mortar;

– towards  Zarichchia: two hits, probably by a 120mm mortar;

– towards  Kostobobriv: one hit, probably by an FPV-drone.

Horodnia community:

– towards Senkivka – eight hits, probably by FPV-drones and another four hits, probably by a 120mm mortar.

No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.

Inna Kondratieva, General Director of  Kozelets Primary Healthcare Center reported that in Chemer village, a new modular primary healthcare clinic has been installed. The facility covers more than 80 sq m and is equipped with all necessary medical equipment and furniture. The modular clinic was delivered in August and installed within two weeks. While waiting for the arrival of the equipment and furniture, the community was prepared for its eventual opening. The clinic is inclusive, with accessibility features such as restrooms for people with special needs and ramps. It meets all required standards and includes equipment like electrocardiographs, otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, and defibrillators. The cost of the clinic itself is UAH 3.8m, with medications and equipment amounting to over UAH 789,000. The World Health Organization set up the modular clinic with financial support from the Directorate-General of the European Commission for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid.

According to the Department of Agribusiness Development, in Chernihiv oblast, the harvesting of grain corn continues. Corn is the leading crop grown in the oblast. This year, local agricultural producers planted 423,000 hectares of corn, and they have already harvested nearly 25% of it.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

In the evening, the occupiers attacked Nikopol by a kamikaze drone. Later at night, they shelled Chervonohryhorivka community by Grad missiles. There were no casualties reported.

The occupiers continue to terrorise the civilian population of Nikopol region. As a result of enemy shelling, a 4-year-old boy and a 27-year-old pregnant woman were injured. Both were hospitalised and provided with all necessary medical care. 

In total, artillery and kamikaze drones struck the region about 10 times. They targeted Nikopol, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka and Myrove communities. 6 private houses, 7 farm buildings were damaged and 1 destroyed. A business, an excavator, infrastructure, a gas pipeline and power lines were also affected.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that another batch of 200 FPV drones has been handed over from Vinnytsia to the fighters of the 14th Brigade of the National Guard Chervona Kalyna.

This Saturday, Vinnytsia will hold a training session titled Military Gear, Equipment, Body Armor and Inventory. Participants will learn how to pack a combat backpack in case of military actions or service. The training will cover body armour, camouflage, high-quality war-tested equipment and where to find necessary gear and tips for living in a combat zone.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, said that during the night, air defence forces destroyed 2 russian UAVs in Oleksandriia region.

Oleksii Bezhevets, Representative of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine for recruitment, informed that since 17 June, 431 people have contacted the Ukrainian Army Recruitment Centre in Kropyvnytskyi, with 39 joining the defence forces. Of those who contacted the centre, 19% were women.

Poltava oblast

Filip Pronin, Head of the RMA, reported that during the night, air defence forces were active over Poltava oblast, shooting down an enemy UAV. There were no casualties or damage reported.

Memorial plaques will be installed in honour of 6 Ukrainian defenders: Volodymyr Mazniak, Ivan Nalyvaiko, Ruslan Nosov, Maksym Ostiak, Denys Palii and Serhii Riznyk. A decision on this will be made on 24 October at a meeting of the executive committee of Poltava City Council.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, said that during an air raid, defenders shot down 3 enemy UAVs in the sky over the oblast. There were no casualties or damage reported.

In Uman, soldier Serhii Samarskyi, who was killed in Donetsk oblast in 2022, was laid to rest.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the State Emergency Service, in Stepnohirsk a fire broke out after a russian airstrike hit a high-rise building. The fire affected an apartment covering 70m². There were no casualties or injuries reported.

As reported in the morning briefing by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 2 russian attacks near Mala Tokmachka and Novodanylivka in Orikhiv axis.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv RMA, reported that on 15 October, around 2:30am, russian forces attacked the city, killing 1 person and injuring 24, 3 of whom received outpatient care.

According to the State Emergency Service, fires in 2 city districts caused by the shelling were extinguished.

Odesa oblast

Based on the information provided by the Air Force, on the night of 15 October, there was a threat of ballistic missile strikes from the south in Odesa oblast.

Air defence forces shot down drones in Odesa.

Kherson oblast

In the morning, russian forces attacked Beryslav by drones. A 62-year-old man sought medical help for a concussion and blast injury and another 43-year-old resident was hospitalised with shrapnel wounds to his legs, a concussion and a blast injury.

The RMA reported that russian forces dropped explosives from a drone onto a car in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. A 76-year-old woman suffered a blast injury and a concussion.

In the afternoon, russian forces attacked Antonivka by a drone. An 18-year-old man was hospitalised with a blast injury and a leg wound.

According to Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, russian forces dropped explosives on a shuttle bus in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. Neither the passenger nor the driver was injured, but the bus’s windshield was damaged.

As reported by the prosecutor’s office, in the morning, russian drones attacked Stanislav in Kherson oblast, injuring 2 men, aged 67 and 48. A criminal investigation has been opened.

The russian forces shelled Komyshany, injuring a 56-year-old man who was on the street. He was taken to the hospital.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The US government once again provided mineral fertilisers free of charge as part of the AGRI-Ukraine initiative. This time, 9,500 Ukrainian agricultural producers received aid for autumn sowing in 2024. Specifically, 491 farmers from Volyn oblast received 1 ton of nitroammophosk each through the USAID AGRO Program. This will make it possible to nourish at least 3,000 hectares of arable land.

The 1st Hunting Battalion of the Military Unit A 4056 received an EcoFlow Delta 2 charging station from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

IDPs from Pokrovsk community received humanitarian aid in the village Hust from the Ednannia humanitarian hub.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA held an online meeting with Vasyl Khymynets, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Austria. Cooperation was discussed.

Lviv oblast

About 100 veterans and their families took part in the Waves of the Dniester project. The event was held near Mykolaiv. During 2 days, participants floated on catamarans, kayaks and SUP-boards, took part in fun competitions and recharged their energy during the concert of the Ot Vinta band.

Ihor Babinchuk, call sign Makhno soldier of the 116th Separate Mechanised Brigade, from Strii region, was awarded with the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). The state award was presented to the mother of the fallen soldier. Ihor Babinchuk was killed on 12 August 2023 in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Rivne oblast

The 1st international sports competition among war veterans Strong Spirit’s Games ended in the capital of Spain. They took place within the Arnold Schwarzenegger festival. Veterans from Rivne oblast won 15 medals there.

Rivne oblast is 100% ready for winter. 975 boiler houses and 84 central heating points are at the stage of readiness for heat supply. Also, for uninterrupted work, heat supply enterprises are equipped with 92 generators, water supply and sewage enterprises – 141.

Ternopil oblast

An interactive map of establishments offering discounts for defenders has been launched in Ternopil. Now defenders can take advantage of discounts from 5% to 50% in various establishments, including 6 shops, workshops, an orthopaedic centre, 23 food establishments (cafes, restaurants and fast food establishments) and 9 beauty salons, hair salons and baths.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that a military training took place within the borders of Khmelnytskyi community.

A new shelter was built in Khmelnytskyi gymnasium with a medical room, beds, modern bathrooms and access for students with limited mobility. The cost is UAH 25m from the city budget. According to the project, the shelter accommodates about 500 people, but in fact it can accommodate over 700. It will be used by students, and during extracurricular hours and during the holidays – by residents of nearby streets.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. They discussed priority areas of work and the possibility of joint implementation of projects in the social sphere, education and economic development of the oblast.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Committee of the European Parliament supported the granting of a €35bn loan to Ukraine thanks to the frozen assets of the russian federation. Subsequently, it is expected that on 21-24 October, the European Parliament will have to vote on the loan proposal. The regulation must then be adopted by the Council of the EU, which will enter into force the day after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with a multi-party delegation of the Parliament of Canada headed by Speaker Greg Fergus. They discussed support for the Ukrainian energy system before winter, defence assistance, continued sanctions pressure on the russian federation and Canada’s leadership in freeing Ukrainians.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, took part in the thematic online conference dedicated to the ninth point of the Peace Formula Preventing Escalation Of War And Repetition Of Aggression. This conference was the fourth in a row, and proposals for the 2nd Peace Summit will be formed based on the results of each such event.

On 11-12 October, in the French city of Bayeux, winners of the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award, which honours military correspondents, were awarded. Kostiantyn Liberov, Ukrainian photographer, won in the Photo category by open audience voting with a series of photographs War in Ukraine. Pain, Despair And Hope, and took 2nd place in this category as chosen by the jury.
