russian invaders continue to assault the positions of Ukrainian defenders.
On 13 August, there were 80 combat engagements on the front line. Nearly half of these took place towards Pokrovsk.
Border villages and settlements in Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts continue to suffer from cynical shelling from the territory of the russian federation. Today, artillery and mortar fire affected the vicinities of Novi Vyrky, Manukhivka, Vidrodzhenivske, Karpovychi, Prohres, and Bleshnya. Additionally, the occupiers carried out airstrikes on Riasne, Novi Vyrky, Vorozhba, Bilopillia, Liubymivka, Bilovody, Radkivka, Yunakivka, Sumy, and Basivka, dropping a total of 31 guided bombs.
Since the beginning of the day, russian invaders also struck the vicinity around Mali Prokhody with two guided bombs. Towards Kharkiv, the enemy carried out 12 attacks near Lyptsi, Hlyboke, Tykhe, and Vovchansk, with two engagements still ongoing near the latter.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy did not conduct any active offensive actions.
Towards Lyman, the occupying army stormed Ukrainian defenders’ positions six times near Makiivka, Nevske, Terny, and in Serebrianka forest. Five battles have ended, with one still ongoing. The occupiers also fired unguided rockets near Serhiivka.
Towards Siversk, five engagements took place throughout the day, with the enemy advancing near Spirne and Verkhnokamianske but facing fierce resistance.
Towards Kramatorsk, two engagements are ongoing near Chasiv Yar, and another attack near Bila Hora was stopped by Ukrainian forces.
Towards Toretsk, the occupiers increased the number of attacks to four. One attack was repelled near Toretsk and another near Zalizne, with the battles still continuing. Additionally, the invaders carried out five airstrikes, dropping seven guided bombs on Toretsk.
Towards Pokrovsk, the russians launched assaults in the vicinities of Sukha Balka, Vozdvyzhenka, Novooleksandrivka, Yelyzavetivka, Zelene Pole, Malynivka, Hrodivka, Zhelanne, and Skuchne. The Defense Forces are holding the line, having repelled 22 attacks, with 14 engagements still ongoing. The enemy’s losses in this direction are being clarified. The enemy also carried out four airstrikes on Oleksandropil and Hrodivka.
Towards Kurakhove, the invaders attacked three times near Krasnohorivka and Kostiantynivka but were defeated.
Towards Orikhiv, the enemy, using aviation, launched 30 unguided rockets at the area around Bilohiria.
Towards Kherson, the russians were unsuccessful in five attacks on Ukrainian forces’ positions. They also launched 15 unguided rockets at Mykolaivka.
There are no significant changes on other front lines.
russia is creating and spreading fake news about alleged war crimes committed by Ukrainian military personnel in Kursk region. The Security Service of Ukraine emphasised that these informational attacks have no basis in reality. Additionally, according to the SBU, the russians may soon stage crimes, particularly against civilians in Kursk region, to further accuse the Ukrainian side of these actions.
Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported that six more Ukrainian children have been successfully returned from the temporarily occupied territories to their homeland. Families with children from Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts are now safe.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
The construction of Ukraine’s first inclusive town for defenders is nearing completion in Kyiv oblast. According to Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, the unique residential complex is being built for heroic soldiers who have sustained significant physical injuries after being wounded. 17 certificates for houses in the complex have already been handed over to veterans and their families.
Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that more than 100 residents of Kyiv oblast have completed a free basic training course for civilians. For 7 weeks, the students of Kyiv regional centre were trained in 16 areas: fire and tactical training, tactical medicine, UAVs, engineering, survival, etc. It is noted that since the beginning of the year, women have consistently outnumbered men in the courses – 60% to 40%.
In Hostomel, a multi-storey building on Ostromyrska street is being repaired at the expense of the Fund for the Elimination of the Consequences of russia’s Armed Aggression. The building became uninhabitable as a result of damage in the spring of 2022: walls, floor slabs, roof and supporting structures were destroyed, and all utility networks were out of order.
Olena Biletska, Head of the Ukrainian Women’s Guard, announced that the NGO is continuously working to provide psychological support to women during the war. On 12 August, a training on Mental Health and Body Recovery was held in Borodianka.

The regional youth military and patriotic training took place at the Plast Training Centre in Kyiv oblast. Participants were able to visit 6 different locations, as well as tactical training and first aid classes.
Kyiv City Military Administration reported that over the 900 days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than 46,000 babies were born in Kyiv, and more than 58,000 couples got married.
Zhytomyr oblast
Zhytomyr power engineers have once again gone to help restore power supply in Kherson region. Two emergency teams of Zhytomyroblenerho JSC are involved in the restoration work. Since October 2022, specialists have been repairing power lines damaged by russian shelling in the affected area to provide electricity to local residents.
In Zhytomyr oblast, more than 1,900 unemployed people in 39 territorial communities received job referrals over seven months of 2024 as part of the Army of Recovery programme. According to Zhytomyr Regional Employment Service, people who have lost their jobs for various reasons can join the socially useful work to rebuild the country.
70 children from Zhytomyr oblast went on holiday to the picturesque Bukovel. This event was made possible thanks to the efforts of Zhytomyr RMA and the Caritas Ukraine charity organisation. In total, 485 children from Zhytomyr oblast have been provided with healthcare as part of the Caritas-Spes Ukraine project, which aims to support children and families affected by military hostilities.
Sumy oblast
The Regional Military Administration reported that on 13 August, russian troops conducted a missile and air strike on the infrastructure of Sumy. A power line, gas pipeline, hospital building and several cars were damaged in the city. One person was injured and hospitalised. All necessary services are working at the scene. Emergency repair work is also underway.
At night and in the morning, the russians fired 12 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. 23 explosions were recorded. Sumy, Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Vorozhba, Krasnopillia and Bereza communities were shelled.
During the day on 12 August, russians fired 23 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. 63 explosions were recorded. Khotin, Yunakivka, Miropillia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Nova Sloboda, Putyvl and Seredyna-Buda communities were shelled.
Bilopillia community: the enemy fired from artillery (6 explosions) and mortars (4 explosions). There was also a KAB air strike (2 explosions) and an FPV drone strike (1 explosion).
Putyvl community: 2 mines were dropped by russians on the territory of the community.
Krasnopillia community: the enemy attacked with artillery (22 explosions), MLRS (3 explosions). There were also air CAB attacks (7 explosions).
Seredyna-Buda community: FPV strikes by drones (2 explosions).
Miropillia community: there were UAV strikes (5 explosions).
Yunakivka community: a drone strike was carried out (1 explosion).
Khotin community: a UAV airstrike (1 explosion).
Nova Sloboda community: russians fired from artillery (7 explosions).
School atudents in Sumy oblast must be provided with adequate nutrition. This demand was voiced by the head of the oblast, Volodymyr Artiukh, to the heads of the communities during a meeting of Sumy Regional Office of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities under the President of Ukraine. He thanked those communities that had reviewed their budgets and found the opportunity to organise hot meals for schoolchildren and increase the cost of lunches, and thus the quality of food.
Chernihiv oblast
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, reported that on the night of 12-13 August, russian troops attacked the civilian infrastructure of Chernihiv oblast, particularly in Bakhmach.
According to the State Emergency Service in Chernihiv oblast, a fire broke out and damaged buildings of various purposes as a result of the russian drones’ strike. Industrial and domestic consumers in some areas of the region were cut off from electricity due to the attack. There were no casualties or injuries.
The russian troops attacked the border of Chernihiv oblast with 120 mm mortars, drones and cannon artillery. 51 explosions were recorded.
Semenivka community: 50 explosions (probably from a 120 mm mortar and cannon artillery) in the vicinity of Bleshnya and Karpovychi.
Snovsk community: 1 explosion (arrival, probably an explosive device dropped from a UAV) in the direction of Yeline.
No information about dead or injured people among the local population was recorded as a result of the shelling.
On 19 August 2023, russians attacked a drama theatre in the centre of Chernihiv. Seven people were killed, including a six-year-old girl. 144 people were injured, including 15 children. The attack on Chernihiv was allegedly carried out by an Iskander cruise missile. Chernihiv Regional State Administration stated that the drama theatre was “hosting a private event, not a drone exhibition”. In October 2023, an investigation was conducted and a missile brigade of the russian Armed Forces was identified as responsible for the attack on the Chernihiv Regional Shevchenko Music and Drama Theatre. The russians destroyed the roof and part of the main building of the theatre with an Iskander missile during the attack on 19 August. In November and May 2023-2024, the theatre completed roof conservation, dismantling, and reinforced structures and brick walls. A roof was erected and floor insulation was installed. Approximately €300,000 were spent on the restoration.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
At night, Air Defence Forces shot down 2 enemy Shahids over the oblast.
From evening until morning, the occupiers did not stop firing on Nikopol. They fired mainly with artillery, as well as launched a kamikaze drone and shelled with Grad. They targeted Nikopol, Marhanets, Pokrovsk and Chervonohryhorivka. A fire broke out in the region centre, damaging 5 private houses, 3 outbuildings, a garage, a car and a power line. The occupants also launched a drone at the Hrushivka of Kryvyi Rih region.
In the afternoon, an enemy drone was shot down over the oblast. Throughout the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region more than two dozen times. The regional centre, Pokrovsk, Chervonohryhorivka, Marhanets and Myrove were shelled with artillery and kamikaze drones. Myrove was shelled with Grad. A private and transport company and a non-residential building were damaged. A 33-year-old man was wounded. A private house also caught fire. The enemy shelled one of the communities in Kryvyi Rih with artillery. Dry grass caught fire. The fire was extinguished.
Vinnytsia oblast
Natallia Zabolotna, First Deputy Head of the RMA, reported that on the night of 13 August, six UAVs were shot down in Vinnytsia oblast as a result of Air Defence activity. The windows of a residential building were damaged. There were no casualties. Explosive experts are working at the sites of the detected wreckage of enemy drones.
Kirovohrad oblast
Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, said that Air Defence Forces worked and shot down an attack drone at night. As a result of the downing, dry grass caught fire in the oblast. No one was killed.
Vitalina Bevzenko, Spokeswoman for the regional police, reported that explosive experts from Kirovohrad police returned from Kherson oblast. For two months, they had been working to clear the territories of explosive devices left behind by russian troops. During this time, the explosive experts inspected more than 87 hectares of territory and destroyed more than a hundred explosive devices. This is the eighteenth rotation of the police unit to perform tasks on the liberated lands.
Poltava oblast
A memorial service for the fallen soldier Mykola Baranovskyi was held at the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Poltava. The man was killed during a combat mission on 6 August in Sumy oblast. He was 31 years old.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that one attack UAV was shot down in Cherkasy oblast. There were no consequences and no casualties.
A team of like-minded people from Uman makes and repairs drones for the military. In three months of work, they have delivered three dozen kamikazes to the frontline and repaired more than 40. Oleksandr Dolenko makes drones. He had this hobby even before the full-scale war, and when it started, he decided to use his knowledge to help the army. Oleksandr has been making drones for many years. For health reasons, he cannot take part in combat operations. That’s why he makes these “iron birds” to help the army. Oleksandr’s team consists of five like-minded people. Each of them is responsible for a different process in the manufacture and repair of drones.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
On 12 August, Zaporizhzhia oblast was once again under heavy russian attack. The occupiers shelled 7 settlements, delivering 386 strikes. There were no casualties or injuries reported.
Malynivka, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne and Orikhiv were under attack.
The enemy carried out 126 artillery strikes, dropped an aerial bomb, used MLRS 12 times and launched 247 strike drones on front-line settlements.
The police registered 7 reports of damage and destruction to civilian infrastructure, including damaged apartments, cars, broken windows, torn-off roofs and destroyed garages.
From 24 February 2022 to early August 2024, inspectors calculated damages for over 180 cases of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere as a result of shelling and fires related to the state of war. It is reported that the total amount of damages calculated due to air pollution in Zaporizhzhia oblast exceeds UAH 182m.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to Leitenant General Mykola Oleschuk, Commander of the Air Force of Ukraine, on the night of 13 August, Ukrainian Defence Forces shot down 30 out of 38 russian Shahed drones. Air defence forces in Mykolaiv oblast destroyed 10 Shahed-136/131 drones. As a result of debris falling in Pervomaisk region, a wooden utility building was destroyed.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted an inspection at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant under the Agreement between Ukraine and the IAEA in connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. It was noted that the inspection was carried out by an IAEA inspector with the participation of a State Nuclear Regulatory Inspector. The purpose of the inspection was to verify the absence of undeclared nuclear material. The inspection concluded without any remarks.
Odesa oblast
Ivan Liptuha, Director the Department of Culture, International Relations and European Integration of Odesa City Council, reported that UNESCO transferred the 1st part of funds from Italy for the repair of the roof of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Odesa, which was struck by a russian missile in July 2023.
As of today, over the past year, 2,290 ships have left Ukraine’s Black Sea ports with 63m tonnes of cargo, including grain, to feed the world and support Ukraine’s economy. This is a significant achievement in the face of russia’s illegal invasion.
Kherson oblast
The de-occupied settlements of Kherson, Beryslav and Kakhovka regions continue to suffer from intense russian attacks. On 12 August, the enemy used artillery, mortars, multiple rocket launchers, aviation and UAVs against the civilian population.
Kherson, Sadove, Antonivka, Bilozirka, Kizomys, Veletenske, Prydniprovske, Zymivnyk, Beryslav, Burhunka, Shliakhove, Mykhailivka, Krupytsia, Chervonyi Maiak and Vesele were under enemy attack.
The shelling damaged 53 objects, including 37 private houses, 7 apartment buildings, 2 administrative buildings, a critical infrastructure facility, a dormitory, 4 vehicles and an ambulance.
On the morning of 13 August, the occupiers shelled Zymivnyk, Sadove and Tiahynka, injuring 5 civilians, including a foreign national.
According to the prosecutor’s office, on the evening of 12 August and the night of 13 August, russian forces shelled Kherson by artillery and drones.
A 25-year-old woman died in the hospital from her injuries, and her young daughter was diagnosed with an acute stress reaction. Medical assistance was provided to 2 other victims – a 35-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man. An acute stress reaction was also diagnosed in a 70-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl who came under attack. In Antonivka, a 70-year-old man was injured by an explosive dropped from a drone.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, informed that in the last 30 days, russian forces have attacked Kherson oblast approximately 3,300 times by drones. 7 people were killed and 110 adults and 2 children injured.
6 children were evacuated from the occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. According to Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, the families from the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts are now safe. The parents of the minors reported that their children were forced to attend russian schools and were pressured to obtain russian documents. Also, illegal searches were conducted in their homes.

Volyn oblast
Lutsk community sent 2 DJI MAVIC 3 Thermal quadcopters and 3 DJI MAVIC 3 quadcopters to the Military Unit A1815. The Military Unit A3425 received an DJI MAVIC 3 Thermal, an DJI MAVIC 3 Enterprice and 2 DJI MAVIC 3 PRO drones.
Volyn received 7 “ARPA” wood chippers from the USAID Project HOVERLA. The equipment has already been delivered to Lyubeshiv, Kivertsi, Rozhishche, Horokhiv, Shatsk, Vyshniv and Zymne communities, which are partners of the Project.
Zakarpattia oblast
Over UAH 19.8m will be allocated from the budget of Uzhhorod City Territorial Community to support defenders. Funding was provided in accordance with the city’s target programs operating in Uzhhorod.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
34 children from the families of the fallen defenders from different parts of Prykarpattia went on vacation to recreation complex VODA club in Bukovel thanks to the Care for the Hero’s Family social project.
Lviv oblast
The RMA held a meeting with Umar Hadi, Director General of the Americas and Europe Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Promising areas of cooperation in the agro-industrial sector, IT, energy sector and pharmaceuticals were discussed.
The Fine City festival was held in Lviv for the 2nd time. During the event, almost UAH 8m were raised for the needs of Azov.
Vasyl Makar, Mortar Commander of the Military Unit A4574, from Sambir Oblast, was posthumously awarded the III degree Order of Courage (posthumously). The serviceman was killed on 13 March 2023 in a battle near the settlement of Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Donetsk oblast.
Lieutenant Colonel Nazarii Klyuk, from the village of Birky, Ivano-Frankivsk community, was awarded the Order of Danylo Halytskyi. He is the commander of the 63rd Separate Mechanised Brigade.
Rivne oblast
A youth space for IDP was opened in Rivne oblast. The new youth space Your Territory is aimed at IDP from Luhansk and other oblasts of Ukraine who found refuge in Rivne oblast. The Center was created for the integration of IDP youth in host communities and the involvement of a new generation in the development of youth policy in the oblast.
Ternopil oblast
Ternopil City Council reported that since the beginning of the year, 119 servicemen from the community have received one-time monetary assistance (UAH 10,000 each) for equipment and technical means.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council allocated UAH 3m for grant support for innovations in the field of defence. In addition, UAH 25m were added to communal enterprises to prepare for the winter period.
Chernivtsi oblast
A charity concert Youth Vibe took place in Chernivtsi. At the event, funds were raised for a car for Roman Yasnytskyi, employee of Chernivtsi Drama Theater, who is currently serving in the ranks of the Armed Forces.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
The EU launches a humanitarian initiative for demining in Ukraine, allocating EUR 2m. As part of the initiative, 16 Belgian Malinois will be sent to Ukraine together with 8 Ukrainian mentors. All of them underwent intensive five-month training in Cambodia. These teams will deal with the demining of the liberated territories, including the Mykolaiv, Kherson and Kharkiv oblast, which were badly affected by the war.
Sean Burney, Greenpeace’s Senior Specialist in Nuclear Issues in Ukraine, reported that Greenpeace called on IAEA to investigate the fire at ZNPP.
IAEA specialists visited the cooling tower of ZNPP. Neither tires nor the wreckage of the drone were found at the scene of the fire. At the same time, the team noticed burnt parts of the internal equipment. Also, drops of burnt plastic and fragments of concrete were scattered over the pool with cold water. The cause of the incident has not yet been established. The Agency promised to continue the analysis after further inspection and access to the distribution level of the water nozzle and cold water basin.
Congressmen in Kyiv called for the lifting of restrictions on strikes by American weapons on the territory of the russian federation. Lindsey Graham called for the lifting of restrictions for Ukraine on strikes with American weapons against russia. Richard Blumenthal noted that Kyiv must be given flexibility, authority and ease of winning.
