It has been the 1042 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The situation at the front remains difficult and tense. The enemy, despite the significant losses suffered by our defenders, continues to try to break through the defences of Ukrainian troops. 

A total of 117 combat engagements have taken place since the beginning of the day. 

Hostile artillery shelling from the territory of russia affected areas of settlements in Sumy, Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions, such as Demianivka, Vidrodzhenivske, Tymofiivka, Studenok, Stiahailivka and Medvedivka. 

Towards Kharkiv, russian invaders stormed the defensive lines of Ukrainian troops once near Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy actively attacked the positions of our troops seven times in the areas of Lozova, Nova Kruhliakivka and Zahryzove. Ukrainian troops are holding steadfastly, with six combat engagements still ongoing.

Towards Lyman, the invading army launched 16 attacks on Ukrainian positions near Nadiya, Pershotravneve, Zelenyi Hai, Novoiehorivka, Yampolivka, Terny, Dibrova and in the directions of Druzhelyubivka, Cherneshchyna and Novoserhiivka. Five firefights are ongoing. 

Towards Siversk, the occupants tried three times to advance on the positions of our troops in the areas of Bilohorivka and Hryhorivka, but were rebuffed.

Towards Kramatorsk, the occupiers stormed our units 22 times in the areas of Chasiv Yar, Stupochky, Bila Hora and Predtechyne, 13 clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the russians tried to force our units out of their positions near Shcherbynivka and in Toretsk, where the Defence Forces repelled five attacks. Four more attacks are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy has made 30 attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of Zelene Pole, Baranivka, Novotoretske, Promin, Lysivka, Myrnohrad, Dachenske, Zelene, Novyi Trud, Vovkove, Pishchane and Novovasylivka. Defence forces are holding back the attack and have repelled 23 enemy attacks so far. The enemy’s losses are being clarified.

Fighting continues near the settlements of Petropavlivka, Ukrainka, Shevchenko and Kurakhove towards Kurakhove. According to the updated information, nine attacks of the occupation army have been repelled so far, and five more attacks are ongoing.

Four firefights continue towards Vremivka, with a total of seven attacks by the enemy near Kostiantynopilske, Dachne, Rozlyv, Velyka Novosilka and Neskuchne, and a drone strike on Zelene Pole.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy tried to advance towards Novoandriivka three times and was repulsed.

In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled four offensives by the invaders. 

There were no major changes in other areas.

In 2024, russia fired more than 1,600 missiles and drones at Kyiv, and air raids sounded in Ukraine more than 21,464 times. The longest air alert in Kharkiv oblast lasted 50 hours and 31 minutes. Kharkiv, Dnipro, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts had the highest number of alerts. Kharkiv oblast is the leader with 2,100 alarms. Most explosions occurred in Sumy, Kherson and Donetsk oblasts. Also russia launched 13 attacks on the energy sector, firing about 1,100 missiles.

On 31 December 2024, during a battle in the Black Sea near Cape Tarkhankut in the temporarily occupied Crimea, soldiers of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine destroyed a russian Mi-8 helicopter using R-73 SeeDragon missiles from a Magura V5 maritime drone. Another enemy helicopter of the same type was hit and managed to reach its home airfield.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

The General Staff reported that the occupiers conducted 40 attacks in the direction of Pokrovsk yesterday. Russian troops attacked near Myroliubivka, Promin, Zelenyi, Dachenske, Shevchenko, Vovkove, Novooleynivka and Novoolezavetivka.  

The occupation forces stormed Ukrainian positions 22 times towards Lyman near the settlements of Kopanky, Nadiia, Novoiehorivka, Makiivka, Ivanivka and Terny. 

Towards Kurakhove, Ukrainian troops repelled 21 russian attacks in the areas of Petropavlivka, Slovianka, Shevchenko and Kurakhove. 

The Khortytsia military command said that Ukrainian troops repelled a mechanised assault by the russian army near Leonidivka towards Toretsk yesterday. The defence forces destroyed or damaged nine russian armoured combat vehicles.

From Nadiia, a small village on the border of Luhansk oblast, to Zelene Pole on the southern border of Donetsk oblast, the frontline in Donbas is the longest and most intense. It is here that Ukrainian soldiers fought three quarters of all battles in 2024. This is the statistics of the General Staff: out of more than 46,200 attacks and assaults in total for the year, about 33,700 took place in the east. 

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff reported that as of 4pm, towards Kharkiv, russian invaders stormed the defensive lines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Vovchansk. 

Towards Kupiansk, the occupants attacked the positions of Ukrainian units seven times in the areas of Lozova, Nova Kruhliakivka and Zahryzove, and six firefights are ongoing.

The russian army attacked Ukrainian positions 16 times today towards Lyman, including near Pershotravneve, Zelenyi Hai, Novoyehorivka, Druzheliubivka, Cherneshchyna and Novoserhiivka. Five battles are ongoing, according to the report

Yesterday at about 8:30pm the enemy attacked Vidrodzhenivske village of Bohodukhiv region. A fire started in a residential building as a result of an enemy drone strike.   

At about 2pm, the enemy attacked Kivsharivka village of Kupiansk region. A 51-year-old woman died as a result of the artillery shelling. An apartment building was damaged.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked twice near Vovchansk and Lyptsi.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attempted to advance towards our positions near Holubivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kruhliakivka and Zahryzove 16 times during the day. Six firefights are currently ongoing. 

As a result of intensified evacuation measures, 28 people, including one child, were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova.

The construction of a shelter for an educational institution in Korotych village of Pisochyn community is in its final stage. The shelter can accommodate up to 600 people and protect more than 260 students. The premises include 9 classrooms, an assembly hall, a medical centre, bathrooms and a dining room. It has an autonomous power source.

The press service of Kharkiv State Emergency Service reported that the relatives of rescuers Serhii Baidalinov, Volodymyr Matiushenko and Vladyslav Lohinov received their Orders of Courage, III degree, posthumously.  Three SES employees were killed in Kharkiv in April as a result of a double russian strike.

According to the Deadline, the Porcelain War is one of the best documentaries of 2024. The film tells the story of ceramic artists in Kharkiv at the beginning of the russian invasion in 2022. The film was directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontiev. 

Donetsk oblast

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, Spokeswoman of Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, reported that russian troops shelled Uspenivka. A 58-year-old local was killed as a result of the attack. 

Yesterday police recorded 2,910 russian strikes on the frontline and in the residential sector.

The enemy attacked two settlements: the towns of Lyman and Pokrovsk.

Twenty-three civilian objects were destroyed, including 19 residential buildings.

The occupiers shelled Lyman with Smerch multiple rocket launchers, damaging 4 private houses, a gas pipeline, a power line and a car.

Russians shelled Pokrovsk with artillery, destroying 15 houses.

On New Year’s Eve, the White Angel unit received armoured evacuation vehicles. The special vehicles are designed to carry out humanitarian operations and save lives near the frontline. The vehicles were donated by Lyman City Military Administration.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of the RMA, reported that in 2024, according to the data from 1 January to 30 December 2024, 1106 people were killed and 2094 people were injured. About 210,000 people were forced to leave. 

  Luhansk oblast

According to the RMA, the enemy is attacking almost continuously from several directions. The enemy stormed the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Nadiia, Novoiehorivka, Makiivka and Bilohorivka. The Ukrainian military is repelling the invaders. The russians fired at frontline settlements and fortifications of our defenders from artillery pieces. They fired 12 times. They used 136 unmanned aerial vehicles in these areas of the frontline.

Four Luhansk residents returned from russian captivity. They are Dmytro Martyshev and Andrii Rulov from Rubizhne, Maksym Savenko from Kreminna, and Volodymyr Repiuk from Stanytsia Luhanska. The youngest of them is 27 years old, the oldest has recently turned 61.

Three vehicles with mobile teams are trying to cover dozens of villages and towns in the occupied Luhansk oblast with russian passports. Each team is assigned to settlements in two or three districts or cities. They visit a small village once every one or two months. They work for only 5-6 hours. They cover both the territories seized in 2014 and in 2022.

After 2.5 years of occupation, one of the central districts of Lysychansk has switched on the water supply. Cold water can be used only in the morning and evening, if there is enough pressure.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that at night and in the morning on New Year’s Eve, the enemy attacked Kyiv oblast with UAVs and missiles. As a result of falling debris, a private house in one of the region’s settlements was damaged. A woman born in 1975 was injured – she suffered a concussion and an acute stress reaction. Operational services continue to work on registering and eliminating the consequences of the enemy attack.

KCMA informed that as a result of the strike on Kyiv, rocket fragments fell in Darnytskyi district. Three private buildings and a car were damaged.

The Ministry of Environment announced that the defenders of Chernobyl nuclear power plant are still in russian captivity. Of the 189 prisoners returned home, there are 5 representatives of the military unit No. 3041, which guarded Chornobyl NPP at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. They were held in russian captivity for over 2 years. 70 defenders of Chornobyl NPP still remain in captivity.

An apartment building on Ostromyrska Street in Hostomel that was destroyed by the russians has been restored. More than 60 residents can finally return to their homes. The reconstruction work was funded by the Fund for the Elimination of the Consequences of Armed Aggression.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko, during his visit to the veterans, announced that a modern prosthetics centre is being completed in the capital on the basis of one of the city hospitals in cooperation with the twin city Berlin. The Titan Centre is a unique place to help people with the most severe injuries, provide joint replacement and osteo-integrative prosthetics.

Vitalii Klychko also noted that over 40 Ukrainian defenders with amputations have been sent to Berlin this year for modern prosthetics and rehabilitation. Moreover, Kyiv prosthetists have been trained in Germany.

In 2024, several medical institutions in the capital will be equipped with modern energy saving systems to reduce costs and improve environmental friendliness.

Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that a Centre for Internally Displaced Persons was opened in Bila Tserkva to provide comprehensive support to them. The centre will become a place to receive the necessary services and an important social hub. The project was made possible through the joint efforts of local authorities, the IDP Council and charitable organisations.

In the new academic year, the National Technical University of Ukraine “Ihor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” will train defence industry specialists using a dual system. Targeted profiling of students for specific tasks will be carried out according to a separate curriculum agreed with the employer.

During the meeting, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko awarded cash prizes to veteran athletes who represented the capital at the Strong Spirit’s Games in Madrid in October as part of the Arnold Classic Europe festival. In total, 50 Ukrainian defenders won a record 188 medals at the Strong Spirit’s Games, the first international competition for veterans under the auspices of Ukraine.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr has joined the TMS HUB initiative, a space for rehabilitation and socialisation of military personnel and veterans through sport. As part of this programme, military personnel and veterans are invited to take part in free Brazilian jiu-jitsu training. The training sessions are designed for those who have been seriously injured, have a disability, amputation or use prostheses.

Semenivka community received a specialised vehicle to transport people who use wheelchairs. The specialised vehicle will provide comfortable and safe transportation for people who previously faced serious difficulties when travelling to medical and rehabilitation centres. This is especially important for the families of servicemen who have returned from the frontline and need rehabilitation after being wounded.

Sumy oblast

 According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, on 31 December, the russian army launched a missile strike on the infrastructure of Shostka community in Sumy oblast. The attack destroyed several infrastructure facilities, damaged 12 multi-storey residential buildings, two educational institutions, social facilities, a polyclinic, and four boiler houses. As a result, some residents were left without heating due to the damage.

During night and morning, russians carried out 6 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 6 explosions. The attacks targeted Shostka and Svesa communities.

On 30 Desember, russians carried out 34 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 55 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Myropilia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, and Seredyna-Buda community.

Krasnopillia community: UAV drop bombs (13 explosions), mortar shelling (5 explosions).

Khotin community: attacks were carried out by FPV-drones (8 explosions).

Myropillia community: the enemy attacked by MLRS (20 explosions).

Esman community: the russians struck by artillery (4 explosions).

Seredino-Budska community: an attack was recorded by FPV-drones (3 explosions).

Velyka Pysarivka community: UAV drop bombs (2 explosions).

According to Romny Region Administration, on 30 December, Oleksii Kuzmenko, a resident of Romny region, returned from russian captivity. The 32-year-old had spent a year and a half in russian captivity. Additionally, two servicemen from Krasnopillia community, Vitalii Stepanenko and Yaroslav Marchenko, were also released.

Chernihiv oblast

On 30 Desember russian army attacked two border communities in Chernihiv oblast.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community:

2 explosions (probably by artillery) in Dibrova village.

Semenivka community:

3 explosions (probably by artillery) in Semenivka.

2 explosions (probably by FPV-drone) in the area of Leonivka village;

4 explosions (probably by FPV-drone) in the area of ​​Medvedivka village;

1 explosion (probably by FPV-drone) in the area of ​​Yanzhulivka village;

19 explosions (probably by a 120mm mortar) in the area of Tymonovychi village;

4 explosions (probably by a 120mm mortar) in Mykolaivka village.

Semenivka Mayor Serhii Dedenko reported that on 30 December, during the 59th prisoner exchange, Denys Potenko, a resident of the border town of Semenivka in Chernihiv Oblast, returned home,. The serviceman had been held in captivity for nearly three years. He now faces rehabilitation in a hospital.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

During the night and early morning, the enemy attacked settlements in Nikopol region. The occupiers targeted Marhanets and Pokrov communities by artillery. There were no injuries reported.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​On Pokrovsk front, fighters of Chervona Kalyna Brigade were presented with awards. Soldiers were honoured For Courage and For Bravery and Determination, For Resilience and Invincibility, For Valor and For Heroism. The awards were presented by Colonel Oleksii Osypenko, Hero of Ukraine and Deputy Commander of the National Guard, alongside Colonel Oleh Myronenko, Commander of the Chervona Kalyna Brigade.

Halyna Bachynska, Director of Vinnytsia City Territorial Social Services Centre, reported that wards of centre have organised a camouflage net weaving hub. Since February, they have produced over 100 camouflage nets. Also, they have sent warm clothing and mats to soldiers at the frontlines. Their efforts continue.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, informed that during an air raid alert, mobile fire groups in Kirovohrad oblast targeted russian Shahed drones.

A soldier from Kirovohrad oblast was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the Golden Star. Lieutenant Andrii Skibin, originally from Novohryhorivka Persha village, Dolynska community, has served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2018. In the autumn of 2022, he was awarded the Order For Courage III Class. At 24, he serves in the 54th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after Hetman Ivan Mazepa.

In Kropyvnytskyi, a memorial ceremony was held at Dalekoskhidne Cemetery for Junior Sergeant Yevhenii Danilov of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The soldier had been missing in action for 2 years. Between 2004 and 2006, he participated in a peacekeeping mission in Iraq and held various military honours. He served as a gunner in the 2nd motorised infantry platoon of Military Unit A2962.

Poltava oblast

As reported by the Territorial Centre of Recruitment and Social Support, 2 servicemen from Poltava oblast were returned during the most recent prisoner exchange. Vadym Huzakov and Andrii Tsymbal had been in captivity since 12 April 2022.

Throughout 2024, Poltava community continued constructing memorial complexes honouring fallen soldiers of the russian-Ukrainian War. Memorial sites at Zaturynske Cemetery and the Alley of Heroes in centre of Poltava are still under development.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, stated that Cherkasy oblast provided useful equipment as gifts for the 118th and 110th Separate Mechanised Brigades, aimed at enhancing their combat effectiveness. These gifts included FPV drones, Mavics, electronic warfare systems, thermal imaging devices and more. Dozens of items were purchased with funds from the regional budget and local communities.

Cherkasy paid tribute to serviceman Viktor Andrushchak, who was killed on 23 December 2024, following a russian drone strike in Sumy oblast. He was 44 years old.

In Lysianka community, a memorial ceremony was held for soldier Andrii Pastushenko, who served as a rifleman in a mechanised brigade. He passed away on 28 December while undergoing treatment in Kyiv hospital. He was 59 years old.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defence Forces repelled 3 russian attacks near Novoandriivka on Orikhiv region. The russian forces made 3 attempts to advance toward Novoandriivka but were repelled.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 30 December, russian forces carried out 249 attacks on 8 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. They fired 11 times at Kamianske, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka and Novodanylivka by MLRS.

According to the General Staff, on 30 December, on Zaporizhzhia and Orikhiv axes, russian forces assaulted Defence Forces’ positions near Novodarivka and Novoandriivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

Referring to Mykolaiv RMA, on 30 December, russian forces attacked Kutsurub community by artillery and FPV drones. Shelling damaged a power line, which was restored by the morning of 31 December. Also, drones damaged a residential building and a car.

The russian forces also shelled the waters of Ochakiv community by FPV drones and artillery. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

According to the Air Force, on the night of 31 December, drones were spotted flying from the Black Sea toward Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi region of Odesa oblast.

Later in the day, there was a missile alert in the oblast.

Kherson oblast

As reported by the RMA, around 4:40pm, russian forces attacked a resident of Antonivka, a suburb of Kherson, by a drone. The man sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to both legs and was hospitalised.

According to the State Emergency Service, 3 fires broke out in Kherson oblast due to russian shelling. In Bilozirka, a shell hit a private house, igniting debris. In Komyshany, the roof of a residential building caught fire. Also, a russian drone dropped explosives onto the balcony of an apartment in Kherson. All fires were extinguished by emergency responders.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, informed that russian forces shelled Tekstylne village in Kherson, damaging houses, windows, doors, roofs and a gas pipeline.

A russian drone dropped explosives on a bus in Kherson, injuring the driver, who sustained a concussion and blast trauma. 4 passengers were inside the vehicle at the time of the attack.

According to the RMA, last evening, russian forces attacked Tekstylne by a drone, injuring a 41-year-old man, who is now hospitalised in moderate condition.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 30 December, russian forces shelled 38 settlements in Kherson oblast. 7 people were injured. The attacks damaged a gas pipeline, a water treatment plant, 2 apartment buildings and 14 private houses.

4 children were returned from russian-occupied territories of Kherson oblast to Ukrainian-controlled areas. The children – 2 boys and 2 girls aged 3 to 17 – are now safe with their families.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

189 Ukrainians were released from russian captivity. Among the freed are three citizens of Volyn oblast: Yaroslav Myronyuk, born in 1996, Holoba village, Ihor Pavlyak, born in 1981, from Lutsk and Yurii Romanyuk, born in 1973, village Stream

The 3rd Mechanized Battalion of the Military Unit A4773 received an EcoFlow Delta 2 charging station from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

Military personnel are being rehabilitated on the basis of the Borzhava sanatorium. Since 2023, over 1,300 servicemen and family members of fallen soldiers from Uzhhorod have been rehabilitated there.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The 77th Battalion of the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade received 3 sets of radio electronic warfare equipment (1 vehicle and 2 trench weapons) worth over UAH 790,000 thanks to the regional budget as part of programs to support the military formations of Prykarpattia.

Lviv oblast

In December, Lviv Regional Center for Emergency Medical Aid and Disaster Medicine transported 64 patients (8 accompanying persons) for treatment abroad as part of medical evacuations. Of those who went for treatment, 54 were military personnel. During this period, 8 requests for evacuation and 21 for repatriation were processed. In addition, 23 Ukrainians returned home after treatment.

Among the 189 people who returned home today from captivity is 25-year-old Artem Tereshko, from Belz, Sheptytskyi region. He defended Mariupol. Disappeared in March 2022.

Lithuanian volunteers delivered over 30 vehicles for the Armed Forces to Lviv oblast. Valdas Bartkavicius, Lithuanian volunteer with Ukrainian roots, organized the fundraising.

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, a series of meetings were held regarding the provision of mobile communications during power outages due to the difficult situation in the energy sector due to enemy shelling. Among key solutions to ensure communication: increasing the number of backup power sources for base stations, setting up free Wi-Fi points in places of mass gathering of people.

Ternopil oblast

As a result of 59 exchanges, 3 defenders of Ternopil oblast return from captivity. Roman Borshch marine, who defended Mariupol. He was captured in March 2022. Viktor Tomchuk, experienced sapper from Lanivtsy, was captured in March 2023. According to preliminary information, he was seriously injured. Volodymyr Reula, resident of Kherson oblast, one of the internally displaced persons, returned home after 2.5 years in captivity. His family lives in Berezhany.

The 25th Separate Airborne Brigade received 100 FPV attack drones from Ternopil community.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

In Khmelnytskyi oblast, 2 family-type children’s homes, which were evacuated from Kherson oblast, received new homes in Khmelnytskyi oblast. The oblast received UAH 13m from the state budget for the purchase of this housing.

Chernivtsi oblast

During this year, communities of Chernivtsi oblast allocated over UAH 200m million to support the army. These funds were used to purchase unmanned aerial vehicles, air defense systems, generators, means of communication, fuel and lubricants and other necessary items to strengthen the defense capabilities of military units.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Italy allocated €13m for the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine.

In Latvia, a batch of over 1,000 unmanned aerial vehicles was prepared for transfer to Ukraine. This is the last batch this year. However, next year the country will allocate €20m for the purchase of unmanned aerial vehicles as part of the drone coalition.

Germany sent 9 archival films related to Ukraine to the Dovzhenko Center. The oldest is dated 1919. It is about three full-length and one short film, two animations and three documentaries. It is noted that some of these films have survived only in the German Federal Archives as unique modern copies on cellulose nitrate media. Among them, the children’s film Congratulations With The Transition (1932) by the Ukrainian director Iva Hryhorovych, which was considered lost.
