War in Ukraine today: latest news, 28 May, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 825th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

In the evening, tussian occupation forces increased the intensity of attacks along almost the entire frontline. The number of combat engagements increased to 108. Currently, fighting is still ongoing in 18 areas. The situation remains the most tense in Pokrovsk axis: Ukrainian defence forces are holding back the attack and resist invaders.

Kharkiv axis: russian invaders have attacked our positions six times since the beginning of the day. Two enemy assault operations are ongoing near Vovchansk. The aggressor does not stop using guided aerial bombs, enemy aircraft make deadly launches from the territory of the russian federation without entering Ukrainian airspace. Four more KABs were launched at Vovchansk and three at Buhaivka from the direction of Shebekino. Mala Danylivka was hit twice by KABs from the direction of Belgorod. 

Kupiansk axis: the enemy attempted to storm the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces 19 times. 17 of them were unsuccessful for the enemy, two attacks are still ongoing near Petropavlivka and Druzheliubivka. The situation is under control.

The enemy’s losses since the beginning of the day in this sector are as follows: 35 soldiers, one artillery system was destroyed, one tank, one vehicle and an artillery system damaged. 

Lyman: Ukrainian defenders repelled all 16 russian attacks. No positions were lost.

Siversk axis: the enemy is active near Bilohorivka. The number of combat engagements here has increased to eight. Ukrainian defenders have repelled 7 enemy attacks so far, and one more is ongoing. The situation is under control.

Kramatorsk axis: the enemy has tried to improve its tactical position six times since the beginning of the day. All the enemy’s attempts to advance were successful and repelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Terrorists dropped one unmanned aerial vehicle near Druzhkivka. 

10 out of 25 battles are still ongoing in Pokrovsk axis. Also russian invaders are attacking near Novooleksandrivka and Sokil.

Kurakhove axis: there were 9 combat engagements since the beginning of the day. 8 were repelled, one is still ongoing.

Vremivka axis: russian invaders keep trying to push our troops near Staromaiorsk. Ukrainian troops repelled 5 attacks, one is still ongoing. The defence forces are in control of the situation. 

Since the beginning of the day, the aggressor has been stubbornly trying to force our units out of their positions in Prydniprovskyi axis, on the footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro river. A total of 10 combat engagements have been recorded there. Another battle continues in the area of Oleshkivski Pisky.

In other areas, the situation did not change significantly.


President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on the press conference in SPain that russians use more than 3,000 guided aerial bombs per month to strike Ukraine. This month, there were 3,200 KABs. 

9 months after the disappearance, russia finally acknowledged that it had detained Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna on the TOT. She disappeared on 3 August 2023 in the temporarily occupied territory while working on a report. On 17 April, the russian Ministry of Defence sent a letter of confirmation to her father, Volodymyr Roshchyn. He also appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross, which confirmed that Victoriia was in captivity, but had no access to her at the moment. The National Union of Journalists stated that it demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Roshchyna and other illegally captured journalists.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Based on the information provided by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces as of 2pm, the number of combat engagements towards Kharkiv has increased to four since the beginning of the day. Fighting continued in Lyptsi, where russians used seven KABs, and Starytsia. Also russia dropped four more UAVs on Neskuchne.  According to updated data, yesterday russia lost more than 250 soldiers in this area, 54 of them irrevocably. A tank, two artillery systems, five vehicles and five pieces of special equipment were also destroyed. Two armoured combat vehicles, 10 artillery systems, six vehicles and a unit of special equipment were damaged. 

The General Staff noted that the intensity of the russian assault operations towards Kupiansk has increased. Also russia attacked the positions of the Defence Forces 12 times near Synkivka, Novoselivka, Miasozharivka, Druzheliubivka and Tverdokhlibove. Ukrainian troops repelled 8 of russian attempts. Fighting continues near Petropavlivka, Stepove, Novoiehorivka and Nevske. There were 7 combat engagements since the beginning of the day. In Petropavlivka, Druzheliubivka and Nevske, six attacks were repelled without success for the Russians. Another combat in Nevske is ongoing. Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that at around 5pm, the invaders attacked Kyivskyi district of Kharkiv. According to preliminary information, there is a fire in the civilian infrastructure.

Kharkiv police reported that around 4:40pm, the invaders struck a settlement in Kharkiv region. A fire broke out on the territory of a farm.  

Serhii Bolvinov, Head of Kharkiv Police Investigation Department, informed that last night, experts identified the Epitsentr employee who was killed during the russian attack on the hypermarket on 25 May. The woman’s daughter came from Kyiv to search for her mother and hand over materials for DNA testing. Experts also identified the body of the 38-year-old hypermarket worker after DNA testing. His 8-year-old son had previously taken biological material for analysis to identify the body. Search operations and identification of the bodies are ongoing.

A total of 50 people were injured as a result of russian strikes on the Epitsentr. The press service of Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported an increase in the number of injured.

The press service of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office said that 20 people remain in hospital after russian shelling of Kharkiv on 25 May. According to the press service, two people are in critical condition, one person is in extremely critical condition with negative dynamics. A 13-year-old boy, who sustained shrapnel wounds downtown, was discharged home. According to the regional administration, 8 people were hospitalised as a result of the shelling of Kharkiv on 27 May, three of them were left in hospital.

Tetiana Hryniuk, General Director of the Factor-Druk printing house, said that 4 employees injured in the russian missile strike remain in critical condition. One employee was put into a medication coma. Hryniuk said the printing house’s losses amount to more than €5m.

Stepan Maselskyi, Head of Izium Regional Military Administration, stated that yesterday at 11:05am russians attacked Borova village, Izium region. The shelling damaged houses and two outbuildings. One man was injured and he is in critical condition. 8 apartment buildings and 52 private houses were damaged, five of them are beyond repair.

At 7:50pm, the enemy attacked Zemlianky village, Chuhuiv region. Two men were injured as a result of a drone attack. 

At 4:15pm, russians attacked Kharkiv. As a result of enemy aerial shelling from a DT-30 UMPB, a non-residential building of a private enterprise and a car were damaged. The building of the art college and shops were also damaged. A woman was killed and 13 people injured.

At 11am, the enemy attacked Lyptsi village of Lyptsi community, Kharkiv region. 5 apartment buildings were destroyed and damaged as a result of the shelling by the KAB. 

At 9:20am, the enemy attacked Martove village, Chuhuiv region. Four houses were damaged and a woman injured.

At 9:09am, the enemy attacked Novoosynove village of Kurylivka community, Kupiansk region. As a result of the shelling a house and an outbuilding were burning.

Towards Kharkiv, there were 10 combat engagements since the beginning of the day. 6 enemy attacks were repelled near Lyptsi, Starytsia and Vovchansk.

Fighting continues near Starytsia and Tykhe. The situation is under control, our soldiers are active and inflicting losses on the enemy.

Towards Kupiansk, 7 russian attacks were repelled near Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Hrekivka and Nevske. In one of the areas, the enemy had partial success. In addition, two battles continue near Miasozharivka. The defence forces are taking measures to stabilise the situation and prevent the enemy from advancing.

A total of 11,199 people have been evacuated from Chuhuiv, Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv regions.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff, towards Pokrovsk, the Armed Forces of Ukraine neutralised almost 370 russian troops yesterday and over 100 more since the beginning of this day.  The situation in this sector is the most tense. Since the morning, Ukrainian troops have repelled 7 russian attacks here, and 8 more are ongoing.

Stanislav Krasnov, a soldier of the 95th brigade, reported that the russian army has resumed active assaults towards Lyman.  Ukrainian troops are repelling russian attacks despite the enemy’s total advantage in ammunition and the number of soldiers.

Based on the information provided by Donetsk Regional Military Administration at 3:30pm, three people, including a child, were injured as a result of russian shelling of the outskirts of Druzhkivka. Serhii Boievskyi, Head of the CMA, reported about the shelling. The russian army probably hit a residential sector by a guided aerial bomb around 11:50am.

The press service of Donetsk police confirmed that yesterday the enemy army has launched 2358 attacks in the oblast. 9 settlements were under russian attack: Kostiantynivka, Kurakhove, Lyman, Chasiv Yar cities, Verkhnokamianske, Kalynivka, Molocharka, Novoselydivka and Tarasivka villages.

30 civilian objects were destroyed, including 17 residential buildings, educational institutions, administrative buildings, a business, vehicles and critical infrastructure.

Lyman withstood 6 strikes. The invaders dropped four bombs on the town and fired from Smerch multiple rocket launchers. Two civilians were injured, 4 apartment buildings, educational institutions, an administrative building, and critical infrastructure damaged.

In Kalynivka, russians hit a private house by FPV drone, killing a civilian. 

A resident of Verkhnokamianske was also injured as a result of the drone attack.

The enemy launched two D-30SM UPMB bombs at Kostiantynivka, damaging three apartment buildings, three private houses, an enterprise, an administrative building and a civilian car.

Also russian troops launched a KAB-250 aerial bomb on Tarasivka, damaging 5 private houses.

The Interior Ministry said that since the beginning of the year, fires have destroyed more than 2,000 hectares of forests in Lyman region. The estimated damage from these fires is estimated at over UAH 115m. It will take approximately 70 years to restore a hectare of forest, assuming no hostilities. Most of the fires were caused by russian shelling. Rescuers work both day and night. Often they have to extinguish the flames under enemy attack and in conditions of contamination of the territory with explosive devices.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the enemy launched an airstrike on Nevske, using 9 high-explosive bombs. They exploded near the houses that had already been destroyed earlier. Also russians hit the village with multiple rocket launchers. Novoliubivka was hit by artillery, where the enemy opened fire on household buildings and logistical routes leading to the settlement. Moreover, Makiivka, Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka were also shelled yesterday.

Towards Kupiansk, a modern Serp-VS5 electronic warfare station was among the invaders’ weapons destroyed over the day. Two russian cannons were damaged. Specifically, the invaders attacked near Hrekivka, Nevske and Miasozharivka.

The situation near Bilohorivka remains tense.

For almost two years of occupation of Pryvillia, which is located near Lysychansk, the invaders have not restored almost anything there. The people, who stayed there, live without electricity and water supply. Some houses have only gas.

Employees of a special mobile unit of the so-called “russian Guard Department for lpr” organised anti-terrorist security training for school teachers in Luhansk. 

Roman Vlasenko, Head of Sievierodonetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that forest fires continue around Sievierodonetsk. There are also fires near Kreminna, Stanytsia Luhanska, Troitske and Novoaidar. In some places, the fire is spreading to the settlements, houses and cars are on fire. The invaders do not have enough forces and means to extinguish the fires. Also russians continue to “nationalise” the property of those who have left. The invaders scare locals who want to evacuate. They threaten that if they do so, they will not be allowed to go back.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The city council announced the upcoming start of military exercises in the Bucha district. The military exercises start date has not been announced. Convoys of military equipment may move through the streets of the settlements during the manoeuvres. No shooting or explosions are planned during the exercises. Residents were reminded of the ban on filming and publishing video or photos of the movement of military personnel and equipment.

The Mobile Rescue Centre of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kyiv oblast reported that sappers continue to detect explosive devices left in the oblast since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion. In a park in Borodianka, sappers found a 120 mm mortar shell, and in Irpin, a VOG-25P grenade launcher, which is a fragmentation munition. The shells were removed and destroyed at a special site.

The Reboot course continues to operate at the Ministry of Internal Affairs medical rehabilitation centre for veterans who have lost their eyesight. Seven servicemen who lost their eyesight as a result of combat operations are learning Braille, computer literacy and phone applications, working with psychologists, attending equine-assisted therapy and various professional excursions. The opportunity to undergo rehabilitation together with the family is a special feature of the course.

Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn informed that the state of reconstruction of residential properties damaged as a result of the russian invasion was checked in Irpin. City council officials, heads of utility companies, contractors and designers held on-site meetings at the facilities being rebuilt after the hostilities.

On 26 May, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard held two events at the Borodianka housing estate. During the International Children’s Day, the young guests enthusiastically participated in various contests, competitions and patriotic karaoke, enjoyed sweets and unexpected surprises. Interaction with dogs during the Paw in the Palm canistherapy programme contributes to the physical and psychological well-being of children and has proven to be an effective tool for developing social skills and self-esteem, improving the quality of life of children in the community.

On 22 and 25 May, Ukrainian Women’s Guard held weekly group classes for future first-graders called ‘Preparing for School’. The classes were held in the coworking space of the Ukrainian Women’s Watch Borodianka. One can join the next classes this week on Wednesday and Saturday.

According to the village military administration announcement, on 27 May, the leader of the Italian party RI, Patricia De Grazia, visited the Gostomel community. She reached Moshchun village to see the Angels of Victory memorial, the photo exhibition “War through the eyes of eyewitnesses” and the art exhibition “To Moshchun with Love” by Petro Shark. In Hostomel, the delegation came  to Lyceum No. 1 and noted the high level of the institution and educational opportunities for students. 

Zhytomyr oblast

In 2024, a project to refurbish Kirdaniv Lyceum of Ovruch City Council is being sponsored by the fund for the elimination of the consequences of armed aggression in Zhytomyr oblast. UAH 75.4m was allocated for the process. Work on the facility is being carried out by the schedule and should be completed by the end of this year.

Zhytomyr RMA reported on the active development of the Resilience Centres network under the Government’s assistance, where families can receive support in overcoming stress, recovery from crisis situations, and useful advice for returning to active life in the community. There are already 4 such centres in Zhytomyr oblast.

During the period of confronting the full-scale invasion of russia, 19 family-type homes were created in Zhytomyr oblast to provide 147 children with family care. Another 69 children found shelter and love in 28 newly created adoptive families. In addition, 15 foster families were established in the oblast. Over the past two years, 126 orphans and children deprived of parental care have found new families.

Sumy oblast

At night and in the morning of 28 May, the russian army shelled three border communities in Sumy oblast. A total of 14 mortar explosions were recorded. The Seredyna-Buda (8 explosions), Esman (2 explosions) and Velyka Pysarivka (4 explosions) communities were shelled.

Yesterday russians attacked Sumy oblast 23 times – a total of 89 attacks were recorded using various types of weapons. Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Khotin, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, Esman, Velyka Pysarivka communities were shelled.

The regional police informed that two private households and a car were damaged by russian strikes on 27 May.  According to the North Operational Command, a private household in Popivka was damaged by shelling, and a residential building caught fire in Velyka Pysarivka.

The State Emergency Service reported about destroying 10,000 explosive devices since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in Sumy oblast. To speed up the demining of one of the most heavily contaminated areas by enemy munitions, 2️ mechanised demining machines have been operating in Sumy oblast for over 8 months. To make the deminers feel safer, the SES medical team remains with them at all times and is ready to provide the necessary assistance in the event of a high-profile situation.

Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, announced that about 20,000 people have been evacuated from the dangerous areas of Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts. Three districts of Kharkiv and five districts of Sumy oblasts have been ordered to evacuate. According to her, people prefer to move to safer areas of their oblasts rather than leave their oblasts.

The head of Sumy RMA met with the UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown. They discussed support for the evacuated population, assistance in the stable operation of the heating season and humanitarian issues.

The aid was delivered as part of the cooperation between the regional military administration and representatives of the German Federal Agency for Technical Assistance. According to Volodymyr Artiukh, the first batch including 11 generators has already been received for the needs of critical infrastructure facilities, including water and sewerage networks in case of a power shortage. 

Chernihiv oblast

The russian military attacked seven settlements on Chernihiv oblast border. A total of 50 attacks with mortars, cannon artillery and FPV drones were recorded in Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk communities. In Semenivka community, two local residents, a man and a woman, were injured as a result of shelling.

Two vocational education institutions in Chernihiv oblast will receive UAH 3.6m each to create career guidance hubs. These are the Chernihiv Centre for Vocational Education and Chernihiv Professional Lyceum of Railway Transport. They became the winners of the Support to Vocational Education Reform in Ukraine programme of the Swiss-Ukrainian DECIDE project.

On 28 May, at a session of Chernihiv City Council, the three families of the fallen soldiers Serhii Telushkov, Serhii Panteliuk and Petro Kozubovskyi were presented with medals “For the Defence of Chernihiv”.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

At night, 1 enemy Shahed drone was shot down over the oblast. It was destroyed in Novomoskovsk region by air defence forces. The occupiers continued to attack Nikopol region. From evening until morning, the area was shelled with artillery and Grad MRLs. In total, about two dozen shells hit Nikopol, Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities. A 32-year-old man was injured in the region’s centre, he was hospitalised in the trauma department in a moderate condition. The shelling caused a fire. A sports club was damaged.

In the morning, the enemy launched kamikaze drones at Myrove community. A private house, a car, and an outbuilding were damaged. There were about fifteen attacks on Nikopol region, mostly by kamikaze drones. The region’s centre, Myrove, Pokrovsk and Marhanets communities were shelled. Nikopol was shelled with artillery. The shelling caused a fire in a private house in the city. They were quickly extinguished. A multi-storey building was damaged as a result of the attacks. An outbuilding was destroyed, 5 private houses, a greenhouse and two power lines were damaged. A residential building was damaged by a drone in Pokrovsk community. No people were injured.

Deputies of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council allocated their subvention to help the Defenders. Currently, there are 11.5m offers, of which almost 8m have already been funded directly to military units. The funds will be used to purchase FPV drones, REBs, and ATVs.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​A shipment of aid was delivered from Vinnytsia to two military units. The defenders received Mavicars, FPV drones, thermal imagers, dry showers and an off-road vehicle.

Kirovohrad oblast

Soldiers of the 121st separate territorial defence brigade stationed in Kirovograd oblast destroyed a russian Shahed-136 drone.

Poltava oblast

Bohdan Koval, Head of Poltava branch of the Building Ukraine Together NGO, reported that the communities of Poltava oblast are looking for volunteers who, together with the Building Ukraine Together NGO, could be involved in rebuilding the infrastructure and housing of those affected by the full-scale war.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, reported that two enemy UAVs were shot down within the oblast. In one case, windows were smashed in a private house in Cherkasy oblast. There was also a dry grass fire. People are safe. 

The soldier Oleksandr Fedorovych was posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage” of the III degree. Oleksandr was killed on 28 July, 2023, while performing a combat mission near the village of Urozhaine, Donetsk oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that on 27 May, the russian terrorist army launched 303 strikes on 8 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. An airstrike targeted Novoandriivka. The enemy attacked Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, and Malynivka by MRLS 6 times. The occupiers also continued their massive drone attacks of various modifications. Specifically, the enemy attacked Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Malynivka and Verkhnia Tersa 117 times by drones. Also, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Malynivka and Nesterianka were under artillery attack, with 179 strikes. There were 6 reports of the destruction of residential buildings, but no civilians were injured.

On Orikhiv axis, the enemy conducted unsuccessful attacks in the areas of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. In the operational area of Operational Command South, counter-battery fights and repelling enemy assaults occurred. The enemy carried out 9 assaults in Orikhiv axis, including 8 attacks near Staromaiorske in Donetsk oblast and one assault near Mala Tokmachka in Zaporizhzhia oblast. In Kherson oblast, 11 attacks were repelled near Krynky. Also, 1 Shahed 131/136 drone was shot down in Zaporizhzhia oblast, and 107 enemy reconnaissance UAV flights were recorded.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv RMA, reported that on 27 May, at 8:20am, 9:11am, 10:40am, 6:36pm, and on 28 May, at 5:43am, the enemy conducted artillery shelling on the waters of Ochakiv community. There were no casualties reported.

According to the State Emergency Service (SES), in Ochakiv, a civilian facility was hit by russian drone strikes. The building was damaged, and a fire broke out. On the morning of 28 May, russian drones attacked Ochakiv. Bombs hit a two-story building that housed a store and a fitness centre. A fire ensued, but the civilian facilities were not operational for safety reasons. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. There were no casualties reported.

The demining process continues in Mykolaiv oblast. The SES pyrotechnicians are using various methods to clear the area of explosive devices. Due to shelling by the occupiers, the reservoirs also hide remnants or unexploded ordnance at their bottom. 

According to the Main Directorate of the SES of Ukraine in Mykolaiv oblast, 2 underwater demining units are currently operating in the oblast. These units have been engaged in their tasks since the beginning of the russian invasion. Overall, the underwater demining units have been deployed 174 times, surveying 35 hectares of water area, and removing and destroying 150 explosive devices.

On 27 May, a charity solo concert by Ukrainian musician and singer Sviatoslav Vakarchuk took place at the Yunist Concert Hall in Mykolaiv.

Odesa oblast

At the end of spring, Odesa received 3 Komatsu loader diggers and spare parts from the Japanese government. The special equipment is intended for addressing the aftermath of russian attacks and maintaining the energy supply and infrastructure. Consequently, 2 loaders will be allocated to the ME Odesa Heating Supply and 1 to the ME City Roads.

Ecologists calculated the damage from the russian missile attack on Odesa oblast on 4 May. The State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District reported that land plots were contaminated with metal fragments and construction debris over an area exceeding 1,000 sq m. The damage amounts to over UAH 16.5m. This information has been submitted to the Operational Headquarters of the State Environmental Inspection of Ukraine for inclusion in the unified register of environmental damage caused by armed aggression.

In Izmail, a new direction for free psychological support has been launched in Vilna space for families of veterans and those with relatives on the front lines. Women needing assistance can sign up for individual and group psychological consultations. The support is provided free of charge and confidentially, with support groups led by professional psychologists and experienced social specialists.

Kherson oblast

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that on 27 May, the russian military shelled 9 settlements in Kherson oblast. Lvove, Antonivka, Mykhailivka, Novooleksandrivka, Stanislav, Dniprovske, Bilozirka, Komyshany and Kherson came under enemy attack. The shelling damaged 3 private houses, an outbuilding and a vehicle. There were hits on an educational institution, a cell tower and a water tower. 2 people were injured.

Save Ukraine has evacuated a large family with 7 children to Ukraine-controlled territory. This family consists of 2 girls and 5 boys. The youngest child, born in the occupation, is only 9 months old, and the eldest is 12. The rescue operation was complex, but the family is now safe and under the care of doctors and psychologists. 

National Guard in Kherson oblast received fire control and adjustment systems. These systems will enable Ukrainian artillery and mortar units to strike the enemy with greater precision. The Rostdorstroi LLC team supported the equipment transfer.

According to Operational Command South, russian forces attempted 8 unsuccessful assaults on Krynky yesterday. The russian forces retreated to their initial positions, while Ukrainian forces continued to hold and fortify their positions. Since the end of 2023, battles have been ongoing in Krynky area between Ukrainian forces, who landed from the right bank of Kherson oblast, and the russian forces occupying the left bank. The village has been completely destroyed in these battles.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reported a large-scale fire in Kamianska Sich National Nature Park due to enemy shelling. The fire lasted 5 hours and destroyed over 8.5 hectares of protected territory. Such attacks occur almost daily, with the occupiers destroying all living things around and committing crimes against the environment.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The newly formed 155th brigade received a Mitsubishi L 200. This is one of 13 pickup trucks that were recently purchased with community funds and are now being transferred to military units as requested.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Recruiting Centre of the National Guard of Ukraine was opened in Uzhhorod. The newly created unit offers a number of relevant vacancies from private to sergeant and officer. Special attention will be paid here to work with young people.

Uzhhorod City Council allocated UAH 1.7m in material aid from the budget to 214 city residents. They will receive help in connection with the need for significant funds for treatment and rehabilitation.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The Maltese aid service and Ivano-Frankivsk regional organisation of the Red Cross Society sent food products; water; dishes; hygiene products and household chemicals, totalling over 2 tonnes, to the brigades working on the construction of defence structures.

Lviv oblast

Hospitals of Lviv oblast received pillows, blankets and bedding from partners from the Mazowieckie Voivodeship and representatives of the Marschalko administration (the Republic of Poland).

Lviv sent 20 pallets of Prime drinks to the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of Galicia.

Rehabilitation and sports swimming pools were opened in the Western Rehabilitation and Sports Centre of the Ukrainian National University of Science and Technology, which are unique in terms of accessibility not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe. People with disabilities with all nosologies will be able to practise with them.

Over the past week, 182 people from the frontline areas have arrived in Lviv oblast. Among them are 23 people with disabilities and 14 elderly people. Volunteers of Medical and Psychological Aid continue to provide support to all those evacuating to the oblast.

Rivne oblast

About 200 folk craftsmen from Rivne, Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil oblasts, as well as IDPs from Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts, gathered at the Museum receptions held in Rivne. This year’s Museum guests were held with a charitable purpose – collecting funds to support Vasyl Huliak, a fighter from Duben region. The soldier lost both legs and an arm during a combat mission, so he needs prosthetics. Over UAH 86,000 were raised.

Ternopil oblast

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, presented the Golden Star Order to the family of Captain Serhii Korol, who was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. In 2023, the commander of the Rifle Company participated in the repulse of the assault in Kharkiv oblast. In the battle, which lasted almost six hours, the captain was wounded and died heroically.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 170 FPV drones worth over UAH 2m thanks to the budget funds. Since the beginning of the year, the community has sent over 2,800 FPV drones and over 250 quadcopters with thermal imaging. They started buying additional batteries for quadcopters. Also sent means of electronic warfare and electronic countermeasure.

Chernivtsi oblast

Military from Bukovyna received awards from the military command. 6 servicemen of the 93rd Battalion of the 107th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade were awarded the Golden Cross badge for their courage and heroism, successful performance of tasks during the battle. Two more defenders received the Silver Cross badge.

The RMA reported that Verenchan community allocated UAH 15,600 for food for IDP children, and UAH 53,500 for food for 78 children of military personnel. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly adopted a declaration calling for Ukraine to be allowed to use Western weapons against russia. The declaration was approved by the majority of over 200 legislators from all 32 countries of the Alliance.

Ukraine and Belgium signed a bilateral Agreement on cooperation in the field of security. According to this agreement, 977m will be allocated to the Armed Forces already this year. But Ukraine will be able to use all the weapons provided by Belgium exclusively on its territory.

Ukraine and Spain signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the field of security. The document establishes Spain’s commitment to support Ukraine as long as it is necessary to restore its territorial integrity within the internationally recognized borders of 1991. In particular, this year Spain will provide Ukraine with 1bn in military aid. In addition, Spain’s readiness to continue providing comprehensive support throughout the 10-year term of the agreement is recorded.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium reported that the country will deliver 30 F-16 aircraft to Ukraine by 2028, the first fighters should arrive this year.

The Swedish government provided over €56m to help the Ukrainian energy system. The new support will help ensure Ukraine’s energy supply so that essential public services such as schools, hospitals, transport, water supply and businesses can continue to function.

Andris Spruds, Minister of Defense of Latvia, announced that the country plans to invest another €20m in the drone coalition to support Ukraine in 2024. Local Latvian companies will be involved in the production of drones.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Charles Michel, President of the European Council. The preparations for the Peace Summit were discussed in detail.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President, spoke in video mode with Yuval Noah Harari, Israeli historian, writer and professor. They discussed the importance of drawing as much attention as possible to the Global Peace Summit.
