The international “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign is one of the most important global initiatives aimed at raising awareness and encouraging action to combat violence against women and girls.

How did the campaign begin?
The “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign was launched in 1991 by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University (USA). The idea was to create a clear, fixed period to draw attention to the issue of violence by linking it to international dates that already carried symbolic significance. Over 6,000 organizations from 187 countries participate annually.

The campaign runs every year from 25 November to 10 December. This 16-day period was chosen deliberately to symbolically connect several key dates related to human rights and the fight against violence:

  • 25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
  • 6 December – National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada (commemorating the Montreal Massacre).
  • 10 December – Human Rights Day.

Thus, the 16 days symbolically connect:

  • Violence against women (25 November).
  • Concrete tragic events (Montreal Massacre on 6 December).
  • The broader human rights context (10 December).

This creates a powerful narrative underscoring the universality of the problem, its connection to human rights violations, and the need for global, coordinated efforts to eradicate it.

The government will allocate one billion hryvnias to eliminate the consequences of shelling in frontline regions. The funds will support 93 communities in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kherson, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions. The money will be directed toward five areas: construction and arrangement of shelters, additional protection of key equipment, emergency rescue operations, repair of engineering networks, and creating fuel reserves. This was announced by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Veterans with disabilities will be able to receive compensation for modifying their personal vehicles. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the corresponding resolution. The maximum amount of the compensation is up to 70,000 hryvnias and will be available starting 3 January 2026. Compensation will be provided based on actual, documented expenses for vehicle modifications performed at licensed specialized service stations.

To receive reimbursement, applicants must submit a request with supporting documents to the veteran policy departments of regional administrations, district administrations, or executive bodies of city councils.

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine also provides free driver training for veterans with disabilities. More detailed information is available from the local veteran policy office at one’s place of residence or stay.
