War in Ukraine today: latest news, 05 January 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1412  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:

The invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders.

In total, there have been 80 combat clashes since the beginning of the day.

Border settlements, in particular Ryzivka, Budky, Bezsalivka, Stara Huta in the Sumy region, and Khrinivka in Chernihiv oblast, have been affected by artillery shelling from the territory of the russian Federation.

Towards North Slobozhanske and Kursk, the enemy carried out 31 shellings, including two with multiple launch rocket systems.

Towards South Slobozhanske, Ukrainian soldiers stopped one enemy attack in Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, since the beginning of the day, the enemy has twice attempted to advance towards Kurylivka and Kupiansk.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked eight times near Nadiia, Zarichne, and in the directions of the settlements of Drobysheve, Stavky, and Lyman. One battle is currently ongoing.

Towards Sloviansk, the Defence Forces repelled two enemy attacks near Zakytne, and one battle is still ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions.

Towards Kostiantynivka, our troops stopped 12 enemy attacks near the towns of Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Shcherbynivka, Rusyn Yar, and towards Kostiantynivka, Berestok, and Sofiivka. Another battle is still going on.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers have made 27 attempts to dislodge our defenders from their positions in the areas of the settlements of Chervonyi Lyman, Sukhetske, Zatyshok, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetsk, Filiia, and towards the settlements of Hryshyne and Ivanivka. The defence forces are holding back the enemy’s advance and have already stopped 20 attacks.

Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy attacked five times in the areas of the settlements of Vyshneve and Zlahoda.

Towards Huliaipole, the defence forces repelled 16 russian attacks in the areas of Uspenivka, Huliaipole and towards Dobropillia, Varvarivka, Zelenyi and Pryluky. Five more clashes are still ongoing. Zaliznychne and Rizdvyanka were hit by KAB air strikes.

No enemy offensive actions have been recorded towards Orikhiv at this time.

Towards Kherson, the enemy attacked once in the area of the Antonivskyi Bridge.

The situation on other fronts has not changed significantly.

Ukraine has imposed sanctions on individuals and companies that provide the occupiers with communications, electronic warfare, and microelectronics. It is noted that the new restrictions apply to 95 individuals and 70 legal entities, most of whom are citizens and residents of the russian Federation. These are individuals and companies involved in servicing russia’s state defence orders and the activities of its defence-industrial complex. Among them are enterprises and their managers who manufacture and supply products in the fields of communications, electronic warfare and microelectronics for the Russian military-industrial complex and security forces. Sanctions have been imposed on industrial enterprises in the chemical, mining, metallurgical and fuel and energy sectors of the russian Federation.

Oksana Hryhorieva, advisor on gender issues at the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that over the past two years, the number of female officers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine has increased from 4% to 21%. Since 2019, there have been female officers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine who, after receiving their initial rank, served in their speciality and already hold the rank of major or captain. At the same time, there are still problems in terms of career growth for women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, there are no female combat generals in the Ukrainian army.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Since the beginning of the day, the Defense Forces have repelled four Russian attacks in the areas of Vovchansk, Prylipky, and toward Kutkivka. Two more assaults were launched toward Kurylivka and Kupiansk, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

Over the past day, 229 combat engagements were recorded.

In the Southern Slobozhanskyi direction, Ukrainian troops stopped eight enemy attacks in the areas of Vovchansk, Starytsia, Prylipky, Fyholivka, and toward Izbytske and Kutkivka.

In the Kupiansk direction, three attacks by the invaders took place yesterday. Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy assault actions in the areas of Stepova Novoselivka, Pershotravneve, and toward Petropavlivka.

In the Kupiansk direction, Russian forces attempted to use the “Soyuz” gas pipeline to amass forces and advance, the press service of the 7th Air Assault Corps reported. They operated north of Novoplatonivka—toward Nova Kruhliakivka and Zahryzove. Ukrainian troops halted the assault and eliminated at least 40 Russian servicemen, the corps’ press service added.

Last week, 1,074 combat engagements occurred along the front line.

In 2025, the main directions of Russian attacks in the Kharkiv region were the Kupiansk, Lyman, and Vovchansk axes; however, the enemy did not achieve its primary objectives. In the Kupiansk direction, the Russian army’s main goal was to occupy Kupiansk itself. Despite advances and attempts to infiltrate the city in small groups, the Defense Forces conducted a clearing operation, cut logistics routes, and blocked Russian units. In the Lyman direction, Russian forces advanced several kilometers, entered parts of villages, and intensified fire pressure, including on Izium, prompting enhanced defenses in the city and the installation of anti-drone nets. Meanwhile, continuous assaults continue in the Vovchansk direction: Russians are using aerial bombs, artillery, and small-group tactics, but have failed to fully capture the city. Along the border, the enemy periodically attempts to enter individual villages to stretch Ukrainian defenses; however, there has been no sustained breakthrough, and the frontline near Kharkiv remains relatively stable.

Five missile strikes carried out by Russian forces on Kharkiv during the day on January 5 targeted energy infrastructure, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported. According to him, there is significant damage. The type of missiles will be determined after expert examinations, the press service of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said.

A 58-year-old man was injured as a result of enemy shelling of Kharkiv. He was taken to hospital, where medics are providing all necessary assistance.

A 19-year-old man sustained injuries from glass shards due to a Russian drone attack on Zlatopil on the night of January 5, the press service of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported.

Preliminarily, a Geran-2 UAV struck the ground in front of a private house.

Over the past day, the city of Kharkiv and seven settlements in the Kharkiv region came under enemy strikes.

As a result of shelling in the settlement of Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi of the Kupiansk community, a 67-year-old woman was injured.

Fragments of human bodies were discovered under the rubble following an enemy strike on Kharkiv on January 2.

The enemy attacked the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv with UAVs.

In the Kharkiv region, the enemy actively used various types of weapons:
▪️ 2 missiles (type to be determined);
▪️ 4 Geran-2 UAVs;
▪️ 3 Molniya UAVs;
▪️ 1 FPV drone;
▪️ 8 UAVs (type to be determined).

Civilian infrastructure was damaged and destroyed:
▪️ in the Kupiansk district—one vehicle (village of Malyi Burluk), a cultural facility, and two non-residential buildings (settlement of Velykyi Burluk);
▪️ in the Kharkiv district—a warehouse building and a gas station (settlement of Korotych);
▪️ in the Lozova district—two private houses (city of Zlatopil).

Vehicles belonging to Kharkivoblenergo and the police were damaged by Russian drone strikes in the Kupiansk district on January 4, reported Andrii Kanashevych, head of the District Military Administration. Energy workers’ vehicles were attacked in Malyi Burluk, and police vehicles in Hrushivka.

At least 12 people were killed as a result of Russian attacks on the Kharkiv region from December 29 to January 4. Information is being уточнено regarding two pensioners who may have been killed in Podoly on December 30. A search-and-rescue operation continues at the site of the explosion in Kharkiv on January 2. Five people are being searched for under the rubble—emergency services are recovering body parts of the deceased. Over the week, 40 people were injured or suffered acute shock due to Russian strikes. Information on deaths and injuries of residents of Kharkiv and the region from December 29 to January 4 was reported by the press services of the police, prosecutor’s office, State Emergency Service of the Kharkiv region, and local administrations.

In the Kharkiv region, the enemy actively used various types of weapons:
▪️ 2 Iskander-M missiles;
▪️ 2 missiles (type to be determined);
▪️ 7 guided aerial bombs (KABs);
▪️ 25 Geran-2 UAVs;
▪️ 6 Molniya UAVs;
▪️ 7 FPV drones;
▪️ 26 UAVs (type to be determined).

The civilian infrastructure of the Kupiansk district suffered the most damage: 15 private houses, a cultural facility, two non-residential buildings, outbuildings, power lines, and three vehicles were damaged.

Significant damage was recorded in the Chuhuiv district: an apartment building, four private houses, a shop, power lines, a car repair shop, and four vehicles.

In the city of Kharkiv, the enemy destroyed a commercial-office building and part of an entrance of a four-storey apartment building, damaged 25 buildings, a hospital, an educational institution, and 33 vehicles.

After the explosions on January 2 in central Kharkiv, canine handler Alona Silenko and her dog Mriia have been working at the rubble-clearing site, helping to locate the remains of the deceased. Alona says Mriia is resilient: the day before, they worked for almost a full day, took a short break, and returned to the search. She adds that what helps them endure is the understanding that their work brings closer the moment when all the deceased can be found and identified.

During the explosions in central Kharkiv on January 2, a hospital was damaged. The building housing the ophthalmology department is more than 100 years old, said Medical Director Svitlana Saienko. According to her, since the start of the full-scale invasion the building has been damaged for the fourth time; this time, the blast wave blew out about 100 windows and damaged doors, the roof, and the heating system.

The day before, the transit evacuation point in Lozova received 12 people within 24 hours. In total, since the start of its operation, 16,107 people have been registered at the point.

Last week, State Emergency Service (SES) units were involved in extinguishing 10 fires caused by enemy shelling. They also neutralized 78 enemy munitions.

In Zlatopil, on January 5, the commemorative action “Set the Table…” took place on Hope Alley to support the families of servicemen who are in Russian captivity or considered missing, the city council reported. A symbolic table was set up at the center of the event: one half was laid with Christmas dishes—as a sign of a home awaiting its defenders—while the other was empty, with metal tableware symbolizing the conditions of captivity. On the boundary between these “two worlds,” relatives lit a flame—as a beacon for those whose fates remain unknown.

For the third consecutive year in Kharkiv, children are receiving New Year’s gifts from volunteers from Germany. This year, Sofia Hnatiuk—a 14-year-old girl from Kharkiv who lost her mother after evacuation and now lives under the guardianship of German volunteer Andreas Porschke—brought about 1,000 gift packages together with him. The gifts are collected by caring people in Germany based on lists of children from dormitories and places of compact residence for internally displaced persons (IDPs), and in Kharkiv volunteers distribute them over several days so that, despite the war, children can still feel a sense of celebration and care.

During the full-scale war in Ukraine, the number of patients requiring cardiac surgery has increased by approximately 20% due to constant stress, injuries, and the exacerbation of chronic diseases, representatives of the Zaitsev Institute of General and Emergency Surgery in Kharkiv report. The institute performs open-heart surgeries, removes shrapnel from the hearts of wounded soldiers, and carries out minimally invasive procedures without general anesthesia. Some services are provided free of charge, while certain expensive implants must be purchased by patients themselves. Despite the constant shelling of Kharkiv and damage to one of the institute’s buildings, doctors work around the clock and perform up to ten surgeries a day.

Russian forces increased the number of attacks in the Pokrovsk direction to 54 over the past day, the General Staff reported. Fighting took place in the areas of the settlements of Shakhove, Nykanorivka, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, and toward Novopavlivka.

In the Kostiantynivka direction, Russian troops carried out 18 attacks; in the Lyman direction, 10.

Russian forces failed in an attempt to cross the Siverskyi Donets River. Russia is trying to take control of the river’s shoreline by advancing small groups and deploying artillery and UAV launch points near Dronivka and Zakitne. However, every attempt to gain a foothold on the bank ends in failure—the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade detects the occupiers in advance and destroys them before they can deploy, the brigade reported.

Ukrainian troops are focusing efforts on controlling the northern part of the city of Myrnohrad, containing Russian forces in the center and preventing the movement of Russian equipment from the southern direction. On the eastern outskirts of Myrnohrad, Russian troops are attempting to entrench themselves, the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

In the Kostiantynivka direction, Russian troops continue to operate in small infantry groups, using poor weather to bypass Ukrainian positions. They attack in groups of three to five people to slip past Ukrainian defenders. Kostiantynivka is one of the key cities that the Defense Forces are holding under constant shelling. The frontline is more than seven kilometers from the city, and civilians remain there.

In Chasiv Yar, the Russian army is trying to advance under the cover of snow, using artillery and motorcycles. The Defense Forces are inflicting significant losses on Russian troops in manpower, equipment, and drones. The battle for the city continues, the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after King Danylo reported.

Russian troops are attempting to operate in small groups of six to eight fighters, moving north of Pokrovsk in Donetsk region, the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces reported. Russia is trying to bypass the agglomeration via Hryshyne and Rodynske. For the past two days, Russian forces have been continuously assaulting the area around the settlement of Hryshyne. Over the last two days, Ukrainian troops have eliminated more than 30 Russian servicemen and hit up to ten units of motorcycles and buggies on the approaches to Hryshyne.

In the Lyman direction, Russian occupation forces are actively using small “infiltration” group tactics and mass employment of FPV drones, including so-called “waiting” drones, which allows them to operate covertly and create extensive “gray zones” without clear territorial control, said Maksym Bilousov, Head of the Communications Section of the 60th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

On January 4, police recorded 1,709 enemy attacks along the frontline and against residential areas.

Four settlements came under fire: the cities of Druzhkivka and Kramatorsk, the settlement of Krasnotorka, and the village of Malynivka.

Twenty-three civilian objects were damaged, including 20 residential houses.

Russians struck Kramatorsk and Krasnotorka with four KAB-250 guided aerial bombs and drones, killing a 29-year-old man and injuring a 29-year-old woman and a 72-year-old man. A shop and private houses were damaged.

As a result of Russian strikes on Kramatorsk at 22:15 on January 4 using Geran-2 UAVs and a FAB-250 with a UMPK guidance kit, a man born in 1953 was wounded and is in serious condition. A medical facility and 14 private households were damaged, the City Military Administration reported.

In Druzhkivka, an FPV drone strike damaged a vehicle.

The enemy dropped five KABs on Malynivka of the Mykolaivka Territorial Community and its outskirts, damaging a private house and a farm.

Dobropillia has been living without electricity, heating, and water since the autumn of 2025.
Under constant shelling, about a thousand people remain in the city without power, centralized heating, or water supply. People heat their homes with firewood, carry water from wells, charge phones using generators, and spend nights at a volunteer “Point of Invincibility.” There are almost no shops—only a few operate on generators. The city lacks cash, nearby buildings are destroyed, and explosive remnants are present. Roads around Dobropillia are controlled by Russian drones, and the frontline is approximately 10 km away.

Due to the cold snap, the number of people agreeing to evacuate is increasing, said Yevhen Tkachov, head of the humanitarian mission “Proliska” in Donetsk region. About 10,000 residents remain in the Druzhkivka community; all children from Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka have already been evacuated. Psychologists and Proliska volunteers, together with local authorities, visit families with children—offering concrete relocation options and showing photos and videos of places where they can evacuate, so that people are not left alone with the decision.

Luhansk Oblast

According to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Russian forces continue shelling in this sector of the front. They used tube artillery, conducted four mortar attacks, fired automatic grenade launchers three times, and directed seven drones at Ukrainian positions. Toward Lyman, Russian forces attacked ten times, with six more assaults recorded toward Sloviansk—fighting took place near six settlements.

Despite loud statements by the occupation authorities, for the fourth winter in a row residents of Lysychansk remain without centralized heating. Parts of the residential sector are still without drinking water and electricity, and the city is deteriorating under the so-called “patronage” of Tatarstan. Bad weather is exposing the poor quality of Russia’s “showcase” repairs in Sievierodonetsk: during winter, roofs in multi-storey buildings have begun to leak, flooding attics and upper floors, while most contractors responsible for these works have already disappeared from the city.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Sixteen patients from the private clinic were transferred to municipal hospitals in the capital.

The State Emergency Service reported that the strike hit the second floor of the four-storey medical facility. The fire, which covered an area of 20 sq m, was localised at 3:34am and extinguished within 10 minutes.
