It has been the 1044 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. In return, the Ukrainian Defense Forces thwart the enemy’s insidious plans, inflicting significant losses in manpower and equipment.

On 2 January, there were 72 combat clashes on the frontline.

Border settlements continue to suffer from cynical shelling from the territory of the russian federation, in particular Bachivsk and Porozok in Sumy oblast; Timofeivka in Kharkiv oblast. The invaders carried out airstrikes with KABs in Taratutyny and Pokrovka of Sumy oblast.

Ukrainian soldiers repelled two attacks near Vovchansk in towards Kharkiv.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy carried out three assault operations near Zapadne, Dvorichna and Kruhliakivka. One engagement ended, two more are ongoing. Air strikes by GABs were carried out in Pishchane and Ivanivka.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked ten times near Nadiia, Makiivka, Terny, Hryhorivka and in Serebrianka Forest. Seven enemy attacks were repelled, three engagements are ongoing.

Towards Siversk, enemy aircraft struck Dronivka, Pazene and Siversk, using four GABs.

Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders are repelling enemy attempts to advance near ​​Chasiv Yar and towards Stupochky.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy attacked four times near the settlements of Toretsk and Shcherbynivka. Two engagements ended unsuccessfully for the occupiers, two more are ongoing. Kostiantynivka was hit by three guided bombs.

Towards Pokrovsk, the invaders made 20 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinity of Myroliubivka, Lysivka, Novyi Trud, Pishchane, Shevchenko, Uspenivka, Solone and Novovasylivka. The defense forces are holding back the enemy’s onslaught and repelled 18 attacks, two clashes are still ongoing. Yablunivka was hit by an airstrike.

Towards Kurakhove, the enemy attacked 13 times near Kurakhove and Shevchenko. 11 battles were completed, two more are still ongoing.

Towards Vremivka, the invaders unsuccessfully attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops near Yantarne and towards Konstantinopol and Novosilka 13 times. The enemy launched airstrikes in the vicnity of Ulakly, Andriivka and Novopol, dropping four GABs and using unguided air missiles.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy continues to shell the positions of Ukrainian  troops and civilian infrastructure, the enemy launched an airstrike with unguided missiles on Mali Shcherbaky and Piatikhatky.

Towards Kherson, russian invaders twice unsuccessfully stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders. The situation is under control.

In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled one attack, two more clashes are ongoing. russians also carried out five air strikes on the territory of the russian federation, dropping five anti-aircraft missiles.

In other directions of the front, the situation did not change significantly.

According to Ukrainian intelligence, as a result of the operation off the coast of Crimea on December 31, 2 russian helicopters were destroyed by missiles from Magura V5 drones. One helicopter was also damaged.

Herman Halushchenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine, says that russia has begun using cluster munitions to strike Ukraine’s energy system. He also emphasized that russia has changed the tactics of strikes in order to cause maximum damage to the energy system.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

ПOver 120 attacks were repelled by the Defense Forces on the eastern front over the past day. The majority of these attacks took place in the Pokrovske and Kurakhiv directions, according to the General Staff.

In the Pokrovske direction, the Defense Forces stopped 38 assaults and advances near Vozdvyzhenka, Myrolyubivka, Lysivka, Novyi Trud, Solone, Kotlyne, Pishchane, Pokrovske, Novoelyzavetivka, Promin, Zelenyi, Novoolenivka, Shevchenko, Dachenske, and Novovasylivka.

In the Kurakhiv direction, the Defense Forces repelled 26 Russian offensives near Ukrainka, Petropavlivka, and Kurakhove.

Ukrainian soldiers also repelled two attacks near Vovchansk in the Kharkiv direction today, the General Staff reported.

In the Kupiansk direction, the occupiers carried out three assault operations near Zapadne, Dvorichna, and Kruhliakivka. One engagement has ended, while two more were ongoing as of 4:00 p.m. Pishchane and Ivanivka suffered aviation strikes from guided bombs (KAB).

Russian aviation dropped two guided bombs (KABs) on the outskirts of Okip village in the Zolochiv community at approximately 4:10 p.m., reported Viktor Kovalenko, the community head.

Russian forces shelled Borova, targeting the central part of the settlement. According to the Regional Military Administration, administrative buildings, educational institutions, and vehicles were damaged. Preliminary reports indicate no injuries.

At 8:18 p.m. yesterday, Russians attacked Bohodukhiv district, Zolochiv community, and the village of Turove. The shelling with guided bombs damaged two private homes.

At 8:00 p.m., Russians also struck Bohodukhiv district, targeting the villages of Stohnii and Kovali with guided bombs. No damage was reported in Stohnii, but four private homes and farm buildings were damaged in Kovali.

From 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Bohodukhiv district faced further attacks. Guided bombs struck areas near Zavadskе, Petrivka, and Udy villages without causing damage.

At 9:40 a.m., Russians attacked the Kupiansk district, dropping munitions from a drone, damaging a car in Kupiansk city.

At 9:00 a.m., the Dergachiv community in the Kharkiv district was shelled, damaging civilian infrastructure in Kozacha Lopan village.

In the Kupiansk direction, seven attacks occurred over the past day. The Defense Forces repelled assaults near Kolisnykivka, Zahrizove, Lozova, and Nova Kruhliakivka.

In Kharkiv, Russian shelling over the past year shattered nearly 35,000 apartment windows and an additional 13,000 in common areas, reported Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

Donetsk oblast

Over the past day, Russian forces killed one person in the Donetsk region.

The police recorded 2,393 enemy strikes targeting the front line and residential areas.

Russian troops shelled three settlements: the cities of Kostiantynivka and Myrnohrad, and the village of Bilokuzmynivka.

Eight civilian structures were damaged, including two residential buildings.

In Myrnohrad, the occupiers attacked with a drone, killing one person and damaging a vehicle.

Kostiantynivka was hit by artillery, resulting in damage to two private houses, two gas pipelines, and power lines.

In Bilokuzmynivka, shelling damaged an electricity line.

In occupied Mariupol, residents celebrated the New Year according to Ukrainian time, the city council reported.

Luhansk oblast 

Over the past day, Russian forces concentrated their efforts on the Lyman direction. According to the Regional Military Administration (RMA), they attacked near Makiivka, Tverdokhlibove, and in the Serebrianske Forest. These enemy assaults were successfully repelled by our defenders. The occupiers provided artillery support 11 times along this section of the front and deployed 77 drones.

Starting January 1, anonymous cash top-ups for mobile accounts are prohibited in the so-called “LNR.” This is stipulated in the Russian Federation’s “Law on Communications.” From now on, mandatory personal identification is required for such transactions, even when using payment terminals.

In Sievierodonetsk, there are no specialists available to repair gas boilers. The settlement also lacks qualified gas technicians. As a result, residents in private sectors must hire specialists from other cities, significantly increasing the cost of such services.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

In Kyiv, the debris has been cleared from the site of an enemy attack in Pecherskyi district on the New Year’s morning. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the rescue operation was complicated by stairwell collapse. All the necessary profile services, special high-altitude and robotic equipment have been deployed.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, informed that the buildings in the centre of Kyiv were attacked by at least four Shaheds. According to the OGPU, there are 7 injured and two dead.

Oksen Lisovyi, Minister of Education and Science, said that as a result of the shelling of Kyiv on 1 January, a prominent neuroscientist Ihor Zyma and his wife, a scientist, Doctor of Biological Sciences Olesia Sokur, were killed. The family devoted almost all their lives to science, working for many years at the Institute of Biology and Medicine of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

A total of 17 buildings were damaged in Pecherskyi district on 1 January, including offices, the National Bank of Ukraine, an educational institution, and residential buildings, with more than 250 apartments damaged. In Sviatoshynskyi district, emergency workers extinguished a fire in 2 garages, that damaged an apartment building, 9 cars, a tram and a tram railway.

A humanitarian headquarters has been set up in Pecherskyi district to help those affected by the russian attack. Victims can contact the headquarters for help and advice on how to proceed.

The Regional Military Administration reported on the results of the reconstruction of Kyiv oblast. More than 30,800 facilities in the oblast have been damaged or destroyed as a result of russian aggression.Thanks to the initiatives of the President of Ukraine, government programmes, and the support of international partners, more than 20,300 facilities have been restored. 1,534 multi-apartment residential buildings and 17,133 private houses have been rebuilt. Social infrastructure has been restored: 209 educational institutions, 120 healthcare facilities, 81 administrative buildings and ASCs. 

Zhytomyr oblast

Andrii Strelbitskyi, Head of the pyrotechnic and humanitarian demining unit of the special purpose emergency and rescue detachment of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Zhytomyr oblast, reported that since the beginning of the full-scale aggression of the russian Federation in Zhytomyr oblast, 14 people have been killed and 12 people, including three children, have been injured as a result of explosive devices. In 2024, there were five cases of civilian casualties caused by explosive attacks.

As of 20 December 2024, the region’s bomb squads made 332 visits to detect and defuse explosive hazards, clearing 87.53 hectares of the oblast’s territory and destroying 4,085 pieces of various ammunition. The pyrotechnic and humanitarian demining unit in Zhytomyr Oblast has a staff of 54 people and 24 items of equipment. The unit is currently 78.3% staffed (42 pyrotechnics).

60 servicemen of the 95th separate airborne assault brigade of the Airborne Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were awarded for their bravery and dedication during combat missions. The servicemen were presented with awards by the brigade commander, Colonel Ruslan Maryshev.

On the first day of the New Year, the winter race Run Fest-2025 took place in Zhytomyr Hydropark. Almost 100 running enthusiasts took part in it. During the sporting event, all participants joined the Gifts for Donations charity lottery and raised money for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Sumy oblast

 Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that at night, russian forces launched GAB strikes on the territory of Krasnopillia community, with three explosions recorded. 

On 1 January, russians carried out 34 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 95 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Shalyhene, and Esman communities.

Khotin community: the enemy fired by mortars (50 explosions), grenade launchers (7 explosions).

Krasnopillia community: there were UAV droppings of VOG (14 explosions), an attack by FPV-drones (3 explosions).

Esman community: an attack by FPV-drones (5 explosions), mortar shelling (2 explosions).

Velyka Pysarivka community: russians struck by artillery (12 explosions).

Shalyhyne community: an attack by FPV-drones (2 explosions).

Myropillia community: a strike by a GAB (1 explosion). 8 private houses were damaged as a result of the shelling.

Sumy Regional Military Administration announced that social workers in Sumy oblast have received 40 electric bicycles for mobile transportation. The transfer of electric bicycles to Sumy communities was made possible through the initiative of the humanitarian mission “Prolisok,” supported by Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF) of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA Ukraine) and Sumy Regional Military Administration. The project aims to support social and medical workers in the frontline areas of Sumy oblast. Specifically, 21 bicycles were allocated to social workers, while 19 were provided for medical personnel in communities across the region.

Chernihiv oblast

On 1 January, the russian army attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Hirodnia, Semenivka, and Snovsk. In Semenivka, a municipal facility and two utility structures were damaged as a result of russian shelling.

Semenivka community:

Tymonovychi: 12 explosions (barrel artillery).

Yanzhulivka: 6 explosions (120mm mortar).

Mykolaivka: 4 explosions (120mm mortar).

Karpovychi: 1 explosion (120mm mortar).

Semenivka: 4 explosions, probably by 152mm barrel artillery. As a result of the shelling, a municipal facility and 2 utility structures were damaged.

Arkhipivka: 2 explosions (explosive devices dropped from UAVs).

Gremyachka: 1 explosion (FPV-drone).

Snovsk community:

Huta Studenetska: 6 explosions (120mm mortar).

Khrinivka: 4 explosions (barrel artillery).

Horodnia community:

Senkivka: 6 explosions (120mm mortar).

On 1 January 2025, Koriukivka and Varva communities informed that local residents paid tribute to two soldiers, Hennadii Pavlenko and Ihor Soroka. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the RMA, reported that during the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region around 15 times. The attacks involved artillery and kamikaze drones, targeting the regional centre, Marhanets, Myrove and Pokrov communities. The strikes damaged 2 apartment buildings, a utility company, 2 garages, a truck, a power line and other infrastructure.

Vinnytsia oblast

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, awarded Vadym Hontaruk, a defender from Vinnytsia oblast with the honorary badge Golden Cross.​​

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, informed that at night, air defence forces were on alert in Kirovohrad oblast.

Poltava oblast

At night, 3 Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drones were shot down over Poltava oblast. The drones were destroyed by mobile fire groups of the 17th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posthumously awarded Yevhen Horin, a sniper from Poltava oblast with the title Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the Golden Star. He was killed in March 2023 in Donetsk oblast during a combat mission.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, said that at night, 5 russian drones were destroyed over Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 1 russian attack near Novoandriivka in Orikhiv region was repelled by the Defense Forces.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that a man was killed following a russian attack on Stepnohirsk in the evening of 1 January.

On 1 January, russian forces carried out 361 strikes on 11 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. These included 11 airstrikes on Stepnohirsk, 10 MLRS attacks on Huliaipole, Novodanylivka and Bilohiria and others attacked by drones and artillery.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the RMA, during the night of 2 January, 2 attack drones were shot down over the oblast.

On January 1, Russian forces launched ballistic missiles, likely S-400s, against Mykolaiv oblast. They were destroyed in the air and no casualties were reported.

Also, russian forces shelled Kutsurub and Ochakiv communities by artillery yesterday. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Air Force, a ballistic threat from Crimea was detected today in Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

According to the RMA, russian forces attacked Stanislav in Kherson oblast by a drone in the evening, injuring a 35-year-old man who was in his yard.

In Korabelnyi district of Kherson, russian forces shelled a minibus (marshrutkas), injuring 5 people with blast injuries, concussions and shrapnel wounds to their legs. Law enforcement has launched a pretrial investigation into this war crime.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that during a nighttime drone attack, air defence forces shot down a russian Shahed-131/136 drone over Kherson oblast. 

As reported by the RMA, russian forces fired a tank at Mykhailivka in Beryslav region last night, damaging a cultural centre. There were no casualties reported.

On 1 January, russian forces shelled Bilozirka in Kherson oblast, damaging windows, roofs and walls of houses. There were no casualties reported.

According to the State Emergency Service, yesterday, a house in Kherson suburb caught fire following a russian attack. Rescuers extinguished the fire and freed a woman trapped in her house after the blast wave deformed her door.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that 2 people were killed and 6 injured due to russian shelling in Kherson oblast yesterday. The russian forces targeted 38 settlements, damaging gas pipelines, 5 apartment buildings, 7 private houses and vehicles.

Volyn oblast

The Military Unit A7028 received a Motorola SLR8000 repeater from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

One of the schools in Mukachevo region received a new bus thanks to funds that were saved during the purchase of school buses, which were handed over to communities this year.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

In Ivano-Frankivsk community, military personnel without the status of a participant in hostilities will receive UAH 5,000 per utility bill. 83 defenders will receive such payments in the amount of UAH 415,000.

Lviv oblast

In Lviv Center for the provision of services to combatants, professional and experienced lawyers advise military personnel and their families free of charge. During 2024, 3,080 legal consultations were provided here.

In Lviv, a 3rd center for providing services to combatants has opened. Here, veterans will be able to receive the necessary services and consultations. The focus of the center will be job search and educational courses for veterans.

As part of the Christmas holidays, the Tourism Department of Lviv City Council, together with city guides, organized a large Christmas excursion about the traditions of celebrating Christmas for a century. The entrance ticket was a donation to the Broyenosci fundraiser, which Lviv organizes together with the Return Alive fund. Therefore, it was possible to collect UAH 51,000 for two excursion days.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast joined the MSEK reform. It started at the beginning of the year on behalf of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Now, instead of medical and social expert commissions, an assessment of a person’s daily functioning has been introduced. It is conducted by expert teams of general practitioners in multidisciplinary hospitals.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA held a working meeting with Viktor Liashko, Minister of Health. They discussed creation of a university hospital at the National Medical University named after Horbachevskuy, according to European approaches to creation of clinical bases and innovative medical facilities.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 200 FPV drones worth almost UAH 2.7m and 15 repeaters worth UAH 750,000 to the military thanks to the Program for Grant Support of Innovations.

Chernivtsi oblast

Bukovyna veterans will have the opportunity of physical rehabilitation with the help of karate classes. The memorandum of cooperation for the support of veterans and their families was signed by Chernivtsi RMA, the Department of Veteran Policy of Chernivtsi Oblast, he Chernivtsi Regional Center for Social and Psychological Assistance to the Defenders of Ukraine VETERAN HUB, the SC LEADER public organization and Chernivtsi Oblast Federation karate. Joint efforts will provide conditions for rehabilitation by involving veterans in sports events, training, health programs and group classes.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

In December 2024, Ukraine attracted $9.2bn in international financial aid. Yaroslav Zhelezniak, First Deputy Chairman of the Tax Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, noted that this amount is record breaker. The last time international support crossed the mark of 9 billion per month was in April last year.

In 2024, Ukraine exported agricultural products worth $24.5bn. This is the 2ond largest indicator in the entire history of independent Ukraine.

Great Britain conducted basic training for 200 Ukrainian pilots before training on the F-16. At the British air base, Ukrainians are taking two ground courses: aviation medicine and training in a centrifuge with high overload force. They are also taught English.

The Ministry of Culture, Media, and Sport in London demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine by raising the Ukrainian flag on its building. This special moment, captured by a participant of the Ukrainian Women’s Guard, symbolizes support for the Ukrainian people on an international level.
