War in Ukraine today: latest news, 18 July 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1606  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

On 18 July, the aggressor attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 69 times.

Artillery shelling of border areas continues. In Sumy oblast, the settlements of Tovstodubove, Sopych, Novovasylivka, Neskuchne, Khliborob, Bachivsk, Iskryskivshchyna, Korenok, Bezsalivka, Luzhky, Yastrubshchyna, and Malushyne were affected; in Chernihiv oblast – Khrinivka.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, seven combat engagements with the enemy took place, five of which are ongoing. The occupiers carried out 17 attacks on settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the invaders made seven attempts to break through the defense towards Izbytske and Khatnye, and in the vicinity of Starytsia and Prylipka. Two engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, there were no enemy offensive operations.

Towards Lyman, Ukrainian warriors repelled six attempts by the invaders to advance in the vicinity of Novoselivka and towards Lyman and Ozerne. Three attacks are still ongoing.

Towards Sloviansk, the Defense Forces repelled 20 enemy attacks in the vicinity of the settlements of Zakitne, Kryva Luka, Minkivka, and Riznykivka, and towards Rai-Oleksandrivka. Four engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Kramatorsk, russian invaders launched six attacks in the vicinity of Novomarkove, two of which are still ongoing.

Towards Kostiantynivka, Ukrainian defenders repelled 10 attacks in the vicinity of the settlements of Kostiantynivka and Illinivka, and towards the settlement of Kucheriv Yar. Two engagements are ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, since the beginning of the day, the occupiers have made nine attempts to push Ukrainian warriors out of their positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Dorozhne, Hryshyne, Udachne, and Molodetske, and towards Kucheriv Yar.

Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy made one attempt to advance towards Vorone.

Towards Huliaipole, the Defense Forces repelled one enemy attack towards Hirke.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy twice assaulted the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the vicinity of Shcherbaky and Plavni.

Towards Kherson, there were no enemy offensive operations.

There are currently no significant changes in the situation in other directions. No attempts by the enemy to advance were recorded.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Robert Brovdi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces reports that Ukrainian drones struck six electrical substations in temporarily occupied Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

There were 276 combat engagements in the oblast. Towards Southern Sloboda, the Ukrainian military repelled 17 enemy attacks in the vicinity of Vilcha, Kozacha Lopan, and Lyman, as well as towards Izbytske and Synelnykove. Towards Kupyansk, the enemy made one attempt to assault near Shyikivka.

Shelling

Around 08:20, russian troops attacked Dergachi twice. As a result of the strikes, a residential house was destroyed and farm buildings were damaged. Five police officers who were on duty near the impact site suffered concussions.

Due to a strike on a critical infrastructure facility in Dergachi community, more than 25 thousand consumers were left without electricity supply. Hits were also recorded in Slatyne and Kozacha Lopan.

Around 12:00, a russian FPV drone attacked a utility vehicle of power engineers in Zolochiv. A 38-year-old worker was injured and hospitalized. His colleague suffered an acute stress reaction.

In addition, a 74-year-old woman was injured in Kalynove, Zolochiv community, as a result of a russian drone strike. She sustained shrapnel wounds to her legs, arm, and abdomen and was hospitalized.

In Kharkiv, russian troops attacked Osnovianskyi, Kyivskyi, Saltivskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts with a missile and drones.

According to Kharkiv oblast State Administration, over the past day, russian troops shelled Kharkiv and 29 settlements in the oblast. Two people were killed and 18 others were injured, including five children. The enemy used two missiles, seven guided aerial bombs, three Geran-2 UAVs, six Molniya drones, nine FPV drones, and 33 more drones of other types.

In Kharkiv, as a result of a strike with an S8000 Banderol missile, a 28-year-old man was killed; his wife and son suffered an acute stress reaction. In addition, an airstrike in Izium damaged about 30 residential buildings, and an FPV drone in Vilkhuvatka killed a 53-year-old man. In total, across the oblast, residential buildings, civilian infrastructure facilities, cars, cultural institutions, shops, hangars, and other property were damaged.

The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 216 people over the day. In total, since the launch of the point, 46,344 people have been evacuated and registered.

 

Another batch of humanitarian aid has arrived in Kharkiv oblast from the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW): 12 pickup trucks and two road rollers. The equipment will be transferred to the hromadas of the oblast, Kupyansk region Military Administration, and the State Emergency Service units for emergency response, evacuation of the population, delivery of humanitarian aid, and survey of territories.

 

About 17 thousand people currently reside in the Zolochiv hromada, including 1,400 children. According to Viktor Kovalenko, head of the Zolochiv Military Administration, russian troops regularly launch strikes against both administrative and residential buildings. Work is also ongoing to establish an anti-drone corridor on the section of the road between Zolochiv and Maksymivka, which is under constant threat of russian drone attacks.

 

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

Over the past day, the Defense Forces repelled 21 russian assaults towards Lyman. Fighting continued in the vicinity of Lyman and Ozerne, as well as towards Novoselivka, Drobysheve, and Yampil. The highest number of attacks was recorded towards Pokrovsk — 43, and another 23 assaults took place towards Sloviansk.

 

The Ukrainian military controls a significant part of Kostiantynivka. Fighting continues in the city, and russian units are trying to penetrate the built-up areas in small infantry groups, using almost no heavy armored vehicles. The Defense Forces are concentrating strikes on the enemy on the approaches to the city. Service members of the 425th Separate Assault Battalion Skelya reported clearing the central part of Kostiantynivka and raising the Ukrainian flag on one of the buildings.

 

Shelling

 

At night, russian troops launched an airstrike against Kramatorsk. A warehouse caught fire on the premises of an enterprise. Rescuers localized the fire over an area of 300 sq. m.

During the day, russian aviation attacked Kramatorsk again. Two people were killed and another person was injured, the Donetsk oblast State Administration reported.

According to the police, during July 17, russian troops launched 1,349 strikes against the frontline and the residential sector of Donetsk oblast. 11 settlements were under fire. 50 civilian objects were damaged, all of which were residential buildings.

In Iverske, a russian FPV drone hit a civilian car. Two people were killed, and two others were injured. In Semenivka, one civilian was killed.

 

Kramatorsk sustained 13 strikes, four of them with KAB-250 air bombs. Two people were injured, including a child. 20 apartment buildings and two private houses, a pizzeria, a shop, an educational institution, a fire station, an administrative building, a production workshop, two garbage trucks, and a car were damaged.

The enemy launched strikes against Yasnohirka with four KABs, a Tornado-S MLRS, and an FPV drone. 11 private houses were damaged, and an industrial zone also sustained destruction. In Sloviansk, a KAB-250 air bomb damaged a production facility. In the settlement of Donetske, an apartment building was damaged, and in Raihorodok — six private homes.

 

Luhansk oblast

The Defense Forces of Ukraine struck a railway bridge near temporarily occupied Sabivka in Luhansk oblast. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the russian army used it for military purposes.

 

russian troops shelled the positions of the Ukrainian military in Luhansk oblast 13 times. Seven attacks using FPV drones and drone explosives drops, three mortar shellings, two strikes from automatic grenade launchers, and one from tube artillery were recorded. Towards Lyman, the Defense Forces repelled 21 attempts by the enemy to break through the Ukrainian defense.

 

In temporarily occupied Luhansk oblast, people with disabilities and patients with reduced mobility have effectively lost access to timely medical assistance. Ambulances can take up to three days to respond to a call or fail to arrive at all due to a shortage of fuel and transport. Because of this, relatives are forced to transport patients to hospitals on their own by taxi or use the services of private carriers, the cost of which is prohibitive for most residents.

 

The occupation authorities also continue the russification of Ukrainian children. In kindergartens, young children are involved in activities to learn russian songs, ditties, and folk games under the guise of celebrating the so-called “all-russian folklore day.” Such measures are used to impose russian culture and displace Ukrainian identity from an early age.

 

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

 

Zhytomyr oblast

Air pollution caused by Russian shelling in March, April, and May resulted in more than UAH 20 million in environmental damage in the Zhytomyr and Korosten districts, according to the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Polissia District.

According to environmental officials, fires and destruction caused by Russian attacks were recorded on March 24, April 30, and May 1, 3, 4, 12, and 26, 2026. As a result, approximately 4,308 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nearly 20 tonnes of particulate pollutants were released into the atmosphere.

Sumy oblast

Andrii Bieliaiev, Head of Shostka Regional Military Administration, reported that a 63-year-old petrol station employee was injured in a UAV attack on Shostka community during the day on 18 July.

Damage to residential buildings and a medical facility was reported in Sumy following a daytime strike.

Serhii Pasko, Head of Mykolaivka settlement community, said that Shahed UAVs attacked Ulianivka on the morning of 18 July. A healthcare facility and the local school were damaged, while private residential houses were also damaged and partially destroyed. When State Emergency Service units arrived to deal with the aftermath, the russian army attempted a second strike on the settlement. No one was killed or injured.

The Regional Military Administration informed that a 53-year-old man who had sustained critical injuries in an enemy attack on Bytytsia Starosta District of Sumy community died in hospital on the morning of 18 July. The previous day, russians had shelled civilian infrastructure in the village with artillery. The man had been hospitalised in critical condition.

According to Ukrnafta, on 17 July, russian forces struck one of the company’s facilities in Sumy oblast by two Shahed UAVs. The enterprise’s premises were damaged. No employees were killed or injured. Specialists are currently assessing the consequences of the strike and the extent of the damage.

The State Emergency Service reported that in Okhtyrka community on 17 July, a vehicle caught fire after a UAV struck a civilian infrastructure facility. In Bilopillia community, firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out in a non-residential building following a russian attack.

The Regional Military Administration informed that from the morning of 17 July to the morning of 18 July, russian forces carried out nearly 90 attacks on 37 settlements across 17 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts were in effect in the oblast for 23 hours over the 24-hour period.

According to the Regional Military Administration, as of the morning of 18 July, five civilians had been injured in enemy attacks across Sumy oblast over the previous day. Destruction and damage were also recorded:

▪️ In Sumy community, three people were injured in russian UAV strikes. A 53-year-old man was injured in an artillery attack on Bytytsia Starosta District. A civilian infrastructure facility, a private residential house and a vehicle were damaged.

▪️ In Velyka Pysarivka community, a 77-year-old woman was injured in a russian drone strike. A private household and agricultural machinery were damaged.

▪️ In Seredyna-Buda community, a private household, vehicles and a tractor were damaged.

▪️ In Krolevets community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.

▪️ In Bilopillia community, a vehicle was destroyed. An educational institution, private households, a civilian infrastructure facility and another vehicle were damaged.

▪️ In Buryn community, the premises of a cultural centre and a private household were damaged.

▪️ In Okhtyrka community, vehicles, a non-residential building and an administrative building were damaged.

▪️ In Nova Slobidka community, a private residential house was destroyed.

▪️ In Mykolaivka rural community, a private residential house was damaged.

▪️ In Hlukhiv community, a vehicle was damaged.

A 52-year-old woman, a six-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl sought medical treatment for injuries sustained in previous attacks on Sumy. Residential houses, outbuildings and property previously damaged in earlier attacks were also recorded in Seredyno-Buda, Esman, Shostka, Yampil, Znob-Novhorodske and Hlukhiv communities.

Over the past 24 hours, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police and non-governmental organisations, evacuated nine people from border communities.

 

Chernihiv oblast

A 60-year-old man was injured after russian forces attacked Berezna community in Chernihiv oblast.

Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, Head of Chernihiv City Military Administration, reported that on 18 July, a UAV crashed on the grounds of a garage cooperative in Chernihiv, damaging the site as well as lorries and passenger cars. No injuries were reported.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that on the evening of 17 July, russian forces attacked a residential house in Novhorod-Siverskyi by a UAV. A family with three children was injured in the strike. The injured included children born in 2009, 2014 and 2019, as well as their parents.

During the evening of 17 July, the enemy attacked the settlement of Berezna with strike drones. A lorry caught fire and an outbuilding was damaged. A 59-year-old man sought medical assistance.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, informed that a russian strike drone attack on Kyiinka community during the day on 17 July set fire to two hectares of grain crops. The fire was extinguished. A russian strike on Korop also damaged a house, a passenger car and a power line. Hits on critical infrastructure facilities were also recorded during the day.

According to Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment, on 17 July, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskui, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar attacks (4 explosions), tube artillery strikes (4 explosions), FPV drone attacks (8 explosions), a Molniya UAV strike (1 explosion), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (2 explosions). A total of 10 settlements came under enemy fire.
