Ukraine’s defence forces are holding back the russian invaders’ offensive. Terrorists continue to kill Ukrainians and destroy Ukrainian towns and villages with missile, air and artillery strikes. The number of military clashes has now risen to 88.
The defence forces are taking measures to prevent the enemy from advancing deep into Ukrainian territory.
Today, the communities of Vyntorivka, Petrushivka, Novodmytrivka, Popivka, Novodmitrivka in Sumy oblast; Vidrodzhenivske in Kharkiv oblast; and Mikhalchyna Sloboda in Chernihiv oblast suffered from enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Kharkiv, the enemy launched air strikes with unguided missiles near Vovchanski Khutory.
Towards Kupiansk, russian invaders attacked the defence forces near Lozova.
Towards Lyman, the invading army carried out seven attacks on Ukrainian positions near Vyshneve, Tverdokhlibove, Zelenyi Hai, Terny and in Serebrianka forest. Five firefights are still ongoing.
Towards Siversk, the enemy is attacking the areas around Bilohorivka, Siversk and Verkhnokamianske. Two of the eight enemy attacks were repelled and fighting continues.
Towards Kramatorsk, Chasiv Yar and Stupochky was attacked, and three russian attempts to push our defenders from their positions failed. At the same time, the enemy dropped six guided aerial bombs near Pazeno and Vasiukivka.
Towards Toretsk, the enemy is trying to break into our defences near Toretsk, three enemy attacks are underway, and one attack was successfully repelled by our defenders.
Towards Pokrovsk, russian invaders have made 13 attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Dachanske, Novyi Trud, Novooleksiivka, Pishchane, Novooleksandrivka and Novoolezavetivka. The defence forces are holding back the attack and repelled six enemy attacks, and seven combat engagements are still ongoing.
Towards Kurakhove, the enemy army attacked 15 times near the settlements of Sontsovka, Stari Terny, Kurakhove and Yantarne. Nine of the occupants’ attempts to advance have already been repelled.
Towards Vremivka, five hostile attacks took place near Kostiantynopilske, Sukhi Yaly, Storozhove, Novosilka and Novodarivka. One firefight is still ongoing.
Towards Huliaipole, the enemy did not conduct any active hostilities today.
Two firefights took place near Novoandriivka and Novodanylivka towards Orikhiv.
The enemy also attacked our defenders once towards Kherson without success, despite the use of attack aircraft.
The operation in Kursk oblast continues. Also russian aircraft have launched three attacks using five anti-aircraft missile systems since the beginning of the day. Ukrainian troops have repelled 29 enemy attacks so far today, with four firefights still ongoing.
The Ministry of Defence reported that Ukraine’s first firefighting robot has been approved for use in the military. Using the control panel, the operator directs the robot to the epicentre of the fire from a safe location. The flow of liquid supplied to the source of combustion can be controlled remotely. The robotic fire extinguishing complex operates at a distance of up to 2km from the operator in open areas and up to 400m in rough terrain.
The Ministry of Defence has approved a unique field kitchen-transformer for supply to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It was manufactured at one of the domestic defence companies. It is designed to cook food in the field for up to 500 military personnel. Ukrainian engineers used the form factor of a 20-foot shipping container as the basis for the product. The kitchen is delivered to the place of mission on a trailer or car chassis, which has standard fasteners for such a large cargo.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
The General Staff reported that over 150 attacks were repelled by the Defence Forces on the eastern front yesterday. Pokrovsk axis is the leader in terms of the number of attacks. The number of combat engagements towards Siversk decreased by half.
Kharkiv oblast
The General Staff reported that towards Kharkiv, the russian army launched airstrikes with unguided missiles near Vovchanski Khutory.
Towards Kupiansk, as of 4pm, russian troops are attacking the Defence Forces near Lozova.
At 2:02am, Kupiansk was under attack. A destroyed outbuilding was on fire on the territory of the medical institution.

From 7:20 to 8:12pm, russians terrorised Kupiansk. As a result of shelling from multiple rocket launchers, 15 houses were damaged. A 53-year-old and a 64-year-old man were killed.
At 5:08pm, Nechvolodivka village in Kupiansk region was under attack. A house was on fire as a result of shelling.
Towards Kharkiv, the enemy conducted three offensives near Hlyboke and Kozacha Lopana.
The number of combat engagements towards Kupiansk reached four yesterday. Defence forces repelled the occupants’ attacks near Kucherivka, Zahryzove, Lozova and Petropavlivka.
As a result of increased evacuation measures, 37 people were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions.
Yevhen Ivanov, Deputy Head of the CMA, reported that in 2024, the Coordination and Humanitarian Centre evacuated 26,000 residents of Kharkiv oblast, including 2,500 children.
Donetsk oblast
Anastasiia Bobovnikova, Spokeswoman of Luhansk military unit, said that there are battles for the refractory plant in Chasiv Yar, and the russians want to capture it because it is an important target.
Yesterday the enemy launched 2,968 attacks on the frontline and residential areas. According to police, russian troops shelled three settlements: Bilytske, Myrnohrad and Pokrovsk. Seven civilian objects were destroyed, including 4 residential buildings.
In Pokrovsk, the enemy attacked with drones, damaging an outbuilding and a critical infrastructure facility. Tonight, around 1:30am, russians struck an apartment building, killing a civilian.
In Myrnohrad, artillery shelling damaged two apartment buildings and a shopping pavilion.
The occupiers attacked Bilytske with drones, damaging two private houses.
Donetskoblhaz reported that in Mykolaivka, more than two dozen damages to gas networks were repaired after the shelling by russia on 13 December. The gas distribution system in the town was damaged as a result of the shelling.
The RMA reported that another 146 children in Donetsk oblast are being forcibly evacuated with their parents or their representatives. This is due to the security situation. The minors will be evacuated from 7 settlements of the Udachna community, namely from the territory of Udachne, Kalynivka, Molodetske, Serhiivka, Muravka, Novomykolaivka and Novoserhiivka villages. This decision was made at a meeting of the regional commission on industrial safety and emergency situations.
A funeral was held in Khmelnytskyi for the defenders of Mariupol whose bodies could not be found. The burial took place in a local columbarium. Oleksiy Chernyavsky, 30, was killed on 20 March during the evacuation of the wounded, and the urn was filled with the flag of the Azov Brigade, where he had served for over 4 years. Bohdan Demchuk, 26, was killed on 29 April, his family put a sock he had forgotten on holiday and soil from Urzuf, where Azov was based, in the urn. Aliona Kushnir-Novitska, 30, was killed on 15 April, and a sandal ornament and a medical gown she wore while working in a military hospital were placed in the urn. Oleksii Yanin, 38, was killed on 7 April when a russian shell hit a boat near Azovstal, and the urn was filled with water from the Azov Sea.

Oleksii Yukov, Head of the Platzdarm search group, reported that on 15 December, searchers found six bodies towards Pokrovsk. There is a Ukrainian soldier among them. The bodies of the dead russian occupiers will continue to be transferred for exchanges.
Mariupol City Council said that in 2024, the russian occupiers took out more than 350,000 tonnes of cargo from occupied Mariupol. They are taking grain, metal and other goods out of the city.
Luhansk oblast
Towards Lyman, russians are putting pressure near Novoiehorivka and Makiivka, and are trying to advance in Serebrianka forest and towards Siversk, in Bilohorivka. According to the RMA, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are holding the line there. The occupiers are mostly shelling Ukrainian military fortifications and populated areas with artillery and drones. In particular, yesterday they sent 67 UAVs in our direction.
In an attempt to legitimise the so-called ‘nationalisation’ of real estate located on the territory occupied since 2014, the invaders have empowered ordinary citizens to report the presence of empty apartments. In particular, to neighbours. Upon receipt of the application, these facts will be verified by a specially authorised body, after which the “nationalisation” procedure will begin.
Residents of Siverskodonetsk who decide to live under occupation are offered three options for vehicle insurance by the russians. Two of them are to go to the nearest settlement where this service is provided, or to send documents there by russian post and wait for a response. You have to go 50km away – to Novoaidar. Another option is to contact the local centre for the provision of state and municipal services. They issue a corresponding QR code. However, there is still no internet in the city.

Kyiv oblast
The RMA reported that in the morning, russian troops carried out a drone attack in Kyiv oblast. The attack damaged the windows of an apartment in a multi-storey building and a car. The air alert was declared twice: from 4:58 to 11:30am and from 12:23 to 1:02pm. There were no hits to critical or residential infrastructure. No people were injured.
KCMA informed that as a result of the russian UAV attack on Kyiv, debris fell in four districts of the capital: in Solomiankyi district, a car was damaged and debris was found on the territory of a hospital; in Pecherskyi district, a debris damaged a window in a residential building; in Dniprovskyi district, window glazing was damaged in a residential building; in Holosiivskyi district, a debris was found in the yard of a residential building. There was no information on casualties or damage.
Bucha and Irpin city councils reported that communities in Kyiv oblast continue to help the Ukrainian army. In particular, volunteers from Blystavytsia made 14 nets covering 280 sq m, and local residents of Irpin made 8,000 trench candles over two days.
A modern, well-designed and inclusive shelter was opened in the building of the Faculty of Economics at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The simplest shelter, which students used to go down to during alarms, has been transformed into a space where classes and lectures can be held.
Representatives of the Psychological Support Department of the Kyiv Oblast State Emergency Service took part in the KYIV MILITARY GAMES competition organised to promote adaptive sports. The rescuers won silver and bronze medals. The event, which brought together servicemen, veterans and their families, was aimed at supporting patriotic spirit and social integration through physical activity.
Veterans Anastasiia and Oleksii got married in Kyiv – the couple met during their rehabilitation. Oleksii was fitting a hip prosthesis, while Anastasiia was learning to walk again after losing her shin. Footage from the wedding was shared by the staff of the Superhumans specialised prosthetics and reconstruction clinic.
Zhytomyr oblast
Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration reported that the installation of a solar power plant has been completed at Korosten City Hospital. The project “Promoting Energy Efficiency and Implementation of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive in Ukraine (FEER)” made the installation possible. The initiative works on behalf of the governments of Germany and Switzerland to improve energy efficiency in Ukraine in line with European standards.
A youth space called Ko_Laba was opened in Zhytomyr, where children can attend for free. They will learn how to set up a business from scratch, conduct research and scientific experiments, study the latest technologies, and apply mathematical knowledge in practice. Funding for the space was provided by the city council and the UNICEF Foundation in cooperation with the GoGlobal NGO.
Sumy oblast
On 16 Desember, russians carried out 37 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 72 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, Esman, and Seredyna-Buda communities.
Bilopillia community: FOG dropped from UAV (2 explosions), artillery shelling (8 explosions, mortar shelling (7 explosions).
Krasnopillia community: FPV-drone strikes (4 explosions), FOG dropped from UAV (6 explosions).
Khotin community: SPG-9 shelling recorded (17 explosions), FPV-drone strikes (7 explosions).
Seredyna-Buda community: enemy struck by FPV-drone (1 explosion).
Velyka Pysarivka community: NURS launch from helicopter (5 explosions), FPV-drone strikes (3 explosions), mortar shelling (6 explosions).
Yunakivka community: russians struck by artillery (3 explosions).
Hlukhiv community: FPV-drone strike (1 explosion).
Esman community: russians dropped 2 mines on the territory of the community.
Sumy karate athlete Veronika Filatova won bronze at a tournament in Venice. From 4 to 8 December, 2024, the Karate 1 Youth League World Cup took place in Italian city of Venice. Veronika earned the bronze medal in the 12-13 years kumite category among 96 participants in the up to 47kg weight class.
Chernihiv oblast
On 16 Desember russian army attacked Semenivka community in the border of Chernihiv oblast.
2 explosions, probably by barrel artillery in the area of Karpovychi village;
2 explosions, probably by barrel artillery in the area of Tymonovychi village.
State Border Guard Service reported that on 16 December, Chernihiv paid tribute to Senior Sergeant Valerii Korzh, who sustained fatal injuries during combat in Kharkiv oblast.
The Department of Family, Youth, and Sports of Chernihiv Regional State Administration informed that Chernihiv athlete Kateryna Bohatyriova won the gold medal in the final of European Grand Prix in taekwondo among cadets and juniors. She competed in the under 55 kg weight category. The competition took place from 13 to 15 December in Bucharest, Romania.

Dnipropetrovsk oblast
The enemy attacked Nikopol region around 15 times during the day, by artillery and kamikaze drones. The strikes targeted the regional centre, Myrove and Marhanets communities. 5 private houses and 2 outbuildings were damaged. There were no casualties reported.
Vinnytsia oblast
Vitalii Dragan, Mayor of Bershad, reported that a defender from Vinnytsia oblast, Valentyn Zamkovyi, was awarded the For Indomitable Spirit medal.
Kirovohrad oblast
In Kropyvnytskyi, at Dalekoshidne (Far Eastern) Cemetery, a memorial ceremony was held for fallen soldiers:
Oleksandr Badeh who was killed on 10 February 2024, near Novomykhailivka, Pokrovsk region, Donetsk oblast, during a combat mission. He had been considered missing for 10 months.
Serhii Revutskyi was killed on 6 December 2024, during a combat mission near Uspenivka, Pokrovsk region.
Oleksandr Melnychenko was killed on 8 December 2024, near Harbuzivka village, Lebedyn region, Sumy oblast.
Oleh Nepochatov was killed on 25 March 2022, near Dovhenke village, Izium region, Kharkiv oblast. He was fulfilling a group task and did not let the enemy through. He had been listed as missing since that day.
Poltava oblast
Poltava paid tribute to Maksym Dzhuiian, a policeman from the Liut assault brigade, who was killed in the war with russia. He was about to turn 24 in a week.
In Kursk region, 21-year-old warrior Oleksandr Romaniuk from Hradyzhsk community was killed. He served in the border guard service.
A memorial plaque was unveiled on the facade of a Poltava school in honour of Ukrainian defender Dmytro Hurzhii, who fell on 6 January, 2023, in Donetsk oblast. He was buried at Zaturynske Cemetery and was posthumously awarded the For Courage Order III Class.
In Reshetylivka, the Alley of Heroes was officially opened, featuring portraits of 88 community warriors who were killed defending the country since 2014.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, reported that air defense systems were active in Cherkasy oblast, shooting down 2 enemy UAVs. There were no casualties or infrastructure damage reported.
17 December was declared a Day of Mourning in Uman community to honour defender Oleksandr Sukhomlynov, who was killed on 11 December 2024, in Dnipropetrovsk oblast.
Cherkasy oblast paid tribute to serviceman Oleksandr Sadovyi, who was killed on 3 December 2024, in Kursk region. He was 23 years old.
Serviceman Vasyl Muzyka from Cherkasy oblast was posthumously awarded the For Courage Order. He was killed while performing a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

Zaporizhzhia oblast
According to the morning report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Operational Command South, the Defence Forces repelled 5 russian attacks near Novoandriivka in Orikhiv axis and several assaults in Zaporizhzhia oblast.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, informed that on 16 December, the russian military carried out 342 strikes on 10 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. This included 6 airstrikes targeting Lobkove, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne and Novoandriivka.
In Zaporizhzhia, the reconstruction of a 3-story building at 22 Kyiashka Street, which was hit by a russian missile on 24 September 2022, has been completed.
Mykolaiv oblast
Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, said that on 16 December, FPV drone attacks in Dmytrivka village in Kutsurub community damaged outbuildings on private property. There were no casualties or injuries reported.
On the same day, a drone targeted the waters of Ochakiv community. There were no casualties reported.
Odesa oblast
According to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am, there were no enemy ships in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. In the Mediterranean Sea, there are 6 enemy ships, including 3 carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles with a combined salvo capacity of up to 25 missiles.
Kherson oblast
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, informed that on 16 December due to russian shelling, 1 person was killed and 5 injured in Kherson oblast. The russian military targeted 30 settlements in the oblast. Damaged infrastructure includes a gas pipeline, 2 apartment buildings, 15 private houses and outbuildings.
According to the RMA, in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, russian forces attacked a civilian car by a drone, injuring 2 people who were hospitalised.
Referring to the Prosecutor’s Office, in Bilozirka, russian shelling killed a 59-year-old woman who was on the street and another resident injured.

Lviv oblast
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, is on a working visit to Lviv oblast. In Lviv, Volodymyr Zelenskyi together with Maksym Kozytskyi, Head of the oblast, honored the memory of Ukrainian men and women who gave their lives for Ukraine. Wreaths and flowers were placed at the graves of fallen Ukrainian soldiers on the Field of Mars of the Lychakiv cemetery, where since April 2022 defenders of Ukraine who died in battles with the russian invaders have been buried.
Students of one of the schools of Yavoriv region raised UAH 100,000 for the defenders. Part of the proceeds will be used for the production of drones, and the rest will be given to volunteers to meet the needs of military personnel.
Drohobych Regional Military Administration together with the KOLO CF sent 140 drones to the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of Halicia, the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military units.
Rivne oblast
The delegation of Rokytniv community visited the Italian commune, where they signed a protocol on the intentions of cooperation between the municipalities. This document was the first step towards deepening partnership relations and implementation of joint projects.
Ternopil oblast
Ternopil City Council reported that since the beginning of the year, 3,077 military personnel and 256 wounded defenders of the community have already received financial aid for treatment and rehabilitation.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council approved amendments to the budget for 2024. UAH 500,000 were added for the purchase of housing for the military (in 2024, already UAH 26.5m, 41 apartments).
Chernivtsi oblast
Chernivtsi City Council reported that in total, UAH 35.9m was allocated to vital communal enterprises.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Britain provided Ukraine with £35m in emergency aid for energy restoration. The funds will be used to restore energy and support the most vulnerable sections of the population of Ukraine.
The Italian government approved the 10th package of military aid to Ukraine. The contents of the aid package are confidential, as has been the case with previous military aid packages from the country.
Jonas Gar Stere, Prime Minister of Norway, reported that the country will allocate $242m to strengthen the Ukrainian fleet. He announced that NOK 2.7bn will be sent to help the Ukrainian fleet to deter the russian navy in the Black Sea.
