War in Ukraine today: latest news, January 4, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 315th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6pm:   

The enemy continues to move personnel, weapons, military equipment and ammunition to the areas of hostilities, using rail transportation, military and civil aviation. 

The enemy launched 3 missile strikes on civilian targets in the city of Kostiantynivka, Donetsk oblast, carried out 9 air strikes and 14 attacks from multiple launch rocket systems. 

There is still a threat of the enemy’s air and missile strikes on critical infrastructure throughout Ukraine.

The enemy focuses its efforts on conducting offensive operations towards Lyman, Bakhmut and Avdiivka and is trying to improve its tactical position towards Kupiansk. Towards Novopavlivka, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy is defending. They are fortifying their positions and mining the area along the left bank of the Dnipro River. 

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda, the situation is stable, there are no signs of offensive enemy groups being formed.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, there was tank, mortar and artillery shelling in the areas of the settlements of Karpovychi, Leonivka and Hremiach of Chernihiv oblast; Novovasilivka, Sumy oblast and Krasne, Starytsia, Ohirtseve, Hatyshche, Vovchansk, Ustynivka, Fiholivka and Dvorichna in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, 15 settlements were shelled from tanks and the entire range of artillery, namely Masiutivka, Zapadne, Kupiansk, Kotliarivka, Berestove, Kharkiv oblast and Ivanivka, Ploshchanka, Nevske, Chervonopopivka and Dibrova in Luhansk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut and Avdiivka, more than 30 settlements were shelled, namely these are Spirne, Berestove, Vesele, Bakhmut, Chasiv Yar, Berdychi, Avdiivka, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka and Marinka of Donetsk oblast.

Towards Novopavlivka, Zolota Nyva, Vuhledar, Nikolski Dachi and Prechystivka in Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy shelled the positions of our troops from tanks, mortars, barreled and rocket artillery in over 40 settlements. It does not cease to terrorize the civilian population of cities and towns along the right bank of the Dnipro River. Artillery shelling by the russian occupiers affected the civilian infrastructure of Dorozhnianka, Zaliznychne, Bilohiria, Lukianivske and Kamianske, Zaporizhzhia oblast and Havrilivka, Dudchany, Ivanivka, Antonivka and Dniprovske in Kherson oblast.

In the city of Luhansk, in the neurological department of the Luhansk Regional Clinical Hospital, the occupiers are treating more than 100 Wagner mercenaries. 

On January 3, a buildup of enemy manpower and military equipment in the area of Tokmak, Zaporizhia oblast, was hit. Enemy casualties amounted to about 80 servicemen wounded and dead.

Our aviation inflicted 17 strikes on buildups of the invaders, as well as 4 strikes on positions of the enemy’s anti-aircraft missile systems.

Units of rocket forces and artillery of the Defense Forces struck a control point, 2 buildups manpower and military equipment and an ammunition depot of the enemy.


According to the representative of the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense Vadym Skibitskyi, russia has problems replenishing stocks of high-precision missiles. The occupiers are also expecting a new batch of drones from Iran. They want to combine them to maintain the pace of strikes on our civilian infrastructure facilities.

Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate Kirill Budanov says that Ukraine is preparing a major counteroffensive in the spring. The fiercest fighting is expected to take place in March. This will be the final liberation of the territories of Ukraine and the final defeat of the russian federation.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Dvorichna, Kupiansk, Vovchansk and at least 10 other settlements were shelled. russians continue attacking the oblast using tanks and motors.

SBL batteries were sent to Kharkiv oblast: they will help power the Internet networks while there is no electricity. According to the Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, Kharkiv oblast is among those regions with “the most difficult situation with the Internet”. 

The Kharkiv Regional State Environmental Inspectorate reported that the amount of environmental damage caused by damage to medical institutions during the war was estimated at almost UAH 290 million. 

Head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, informed that recently, new bus routes have been launched between Kharkiv and Kupiansk. There are 2 Invincibility Centres and about 40 heating points. Work on the establishment of new such points continues.

Yesterday, enemy shelling of border settlements in Kupiansk, Chuhuiv and Kharkiv regions of the oblast continued. In particular, Kupyansk, Vovchansk, Strelecha, Dvorichna and others were under fire. In Vovchansk, houses were damaged, in the village of Dvorichna, fire trucks were damaged.

In the Kupiansk region, 2 men, aged 42 and 72, were injured during the day. They are hospitalized in a state of moderate severity. 

Demining continues in the region. During the day, pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service neutralized 76 explosive objects.

Donetsk oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine informs that towards Bakhmut, the border guards and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, launched a counterattack immediately after repelling the assault of the occupiers. As a result, the Defense Forces have knocked the russians out of the front lines and are anchored at the new line of defense. In the battle, 9 invaders were killed, about 20 were wounded. The SBGS reported that as a result of the battle, the Defense Forces of Ukraine have advanced 300 meters and are gaining a foothold in new positions.

The National Police of Donetsk oblast reports that in Bakhmut, on the afternoon of January 4, two women were killed in artillery shelling by the occupiers. 

Overnight, the russians continued to shell along the entire front line.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar was shelled, as well as the area near Vodiane and Prechystivka – without casualties.

Towards Donetsk, 1 person was killed and 4 wounded as a result of shelling near Kurakhove – a shell hit a 5-storey building. Also at night, the russians shot at Hirnyk of the Kurakhove community, and in the morning – at Vesele, the  Ocheretyne community. Avdiivka was hit  from Hrads 4 times. There were no casualties.

Towards Horlivka n, Kostiantynivka came under fire. The russians targeted the industrial zone and the area near the school. No one was injured in the city.

In the Soledar community, 1 person was killed in Blahodatne, 8 houses in Paraskoviivka and 5 houses in Nykyforivka were damaged. In Bakhmut, a historic building in the city center was damaged.

Towards Lysychansk, there were more than 20 hits in Torske and Zarichne of the Lyman communities. No casualties.

According to Head of the Donetsk RMA Pavlo Kyrylenko, russians killed one civilian in Kurakhove, Donetsk oblast. Another 5 people in the oblast were injured. 

Advisor to the mayor of Mariupol Petro Andriushchenko informs that the russian occupiers are turning the seaport in Mariupol into a military base. They fired almost all local workers, replacing them with russian ones.

Luhansk oblast

The invaders’ attacks were repulsed near Stelmakhivka and Bilohorivka. Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, Makiivka, Ploshchanka and Dibrova were shelled by the Russians.

The oblast military administration signed 12 memoranda of cooperation with international organizations: WFP, ADRA Ukraine, People in need, UNDP, DG-East, PFRU, SIDA, Halo Trust, Medicos del Mundo, Acted, GIZ. As a result, international organizations have provided more than 1000 tonnes of humanitarian aid, namely generators, walkie-talkies, quadcopters, engineering and computer equipment and furniture to restore the activities of regional services, food packages, hygiene kits, water, etc. Diplomatic missions of foreign states in Ukraine and abroad (embassies of Great Britain, Turkey, the State of Israel, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania in Ukraine, the Embassy of Ukraine in Austria) provided tens of tonnes of humanitarian aid for IDPs in Luhansk oblast. The USAID Economic Support to Eastern Ukraine Project purchased fuel for humanitarian hubs. The USAID Democratic Development in Eastern Ukraine Project provided employees of public utilities, the State Emergency Service, and disaster medicine with equipment and personal protective equipment. The USAID Democratic Governance in Eastern Ukraine Project provided equipment and protective equipment for representatives of regional communal institutions.

Head of the Luhansk RMA Serhii Haidai informs that russian troops have recently been much more cruel to the local population in Luhansk oblast, with summonses issued by men at checkpoints. As soon as the russians form small ammunition warehouses, such as in Svatove, our artillerymen quickly neutralize them. The occupiers are forced to bring ammunition directly from Luhansk.

The Luhansk RMA says that the occupiers will be accepted for service in the so-called ‘law enforcement agencies’ without age restrictions, psychological selection and testing.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv returned to stabilization schedules. Significant amount of electricity is supplied to the city, its consumption does not exceed the established limits. According to the YASNO CEO, the power system has new damage, but thanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and constant repairs, the situation with electricity supply is stable.

The journalist of the Japanese publication Asahi Shimbun, Wataru Sekita, who was injured during the missile shelling in Kyiv on December 31, reported on Twitter that everything is fine with him. He was wounded in the leg, but is returning home now. He emphasized that he will continue to monitor the situation in Ukraine and asked for support.

The KCSA reported that about 5,200 people, including almost 400 children, took shelter in underground stations of the Kyiv metro during the air raid on New Year’s Eve. The infrastructure of the subway works 24/7 as a shelter and provides the most necessary conditions – drinking water, sanitary facilities and the possibility of recharging gadgets.

Head of the Kyiv RMA Oleksii Kuleba said that 78 health care facilities have been restored in the Kyiv oblast. These are hospitals and polyclinics, dispensaries, and first aid stations.

Restoration of the Hostomel dispensary, in which the enemy set up their ‘headquarters’ during the occupation, leaving behind a crushed and looted premises, is ongoing. Repairs are being completed there. The roof and facade have been repaired, damaged windows fixed.

A modern shelter was set up in one of the educational institutions in the Vyshneve community. The basement was turned into a spacious shelter with desks, cabinets and a projector. The shelter is equipped with generators, there are several rooms and bathrooms.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that the capital of Ukraine was recognized as the best city in the world in 2023. Due to the resilience, invincibility of its residents and bravery in the face of war, experts of the international agency Resonance awarded Kyiv with the honorary title of “Best City of 2023” in the “100 Best Cities of the World” rating. Experts also noted significant improvement of the city’s infrastructure over the past 10 years.

Zhytomyr oblast

The State Emergency Service reported that the rescuers of Zhytomyr oblast received new fire and emergency rescue equipment purchased at the expense of the state, as well as specialized equipment provided by the Zhytomyr RMA and humanitarian aid from international partners.

As a humanitarian aid from Poland colleagues, specialists of the State Emergency Service received 31 cars, including a bus for the personnel, a special car for the gas and smoke protection service and a Scania car.

The Zhytomyr City Council decided to rename 18 streets and alleys in the regional center. Russified names will be changed according to Ukrainian spelling.

Starlink satellite internet equipment and a portable power plant for the military of Kharkiv oblast were handed over by ATO veteran and volunteer from Zhytomyr Oleksandr Shvetsov. The man bought devices worth almost UAH 70K due to the funds he collected during the walking marathon from Odesa to Yaremche.

Sumy oblast

Head of the Sumy RMA Dmytro Zhivytskyi announced that the enemy shelled two communities in Sumy oblast. First, the Seredino-Buda community came under shelling: there were 4 hits. Around 21:00, the occupiers shelled Znob-Novhorodske twice with mortars, there were 6 hits.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the enemy shelled the village of Kustine in the Shostka region, probably from SPHs, there were two hits.

Paramedics in the city of Trostyanets received powerful heaters from the Red Cross. The Red Cross also handed over a tanker truck for the rescuers of Sumy oblast.

The city of Sumy received 22 tonnes of paraffin for trench candles from Lithuanian benefactors. Paraffin was donated to the Sumy charity fund Mira Help: volunteers of the Sumy oblast will be able to make 110K candles for defenders

The Konotop City Council reported that buses, which arrived as a gift from the Czech city of Ostrava and the Polish city of Warsaw, are already running in Konotop. New comfortable buses have replaced cramped minibuses.

The Canadian non-governmental organization EQualitie handed over powerful SBL batteries to Ukrainian Internet providers. This will help provide power during outages for up to 10 hours. In total, benefactors handed over 172 batteries to the regions of Ukraine most affected by russian aggression.

Chernihiv oblast

The Chernihiv border detachment reported that the occupiers struck the Novhorod-Siverskyi and Semenivka communities. The enemy used mortars and barrel artillery.

In the morning, the enemy attacked the village of Karpovychi with barrel artillery: there were 19 shells. Around the same time, the village of Leonivka came under mortar shelling, and 8 explosions were recorded on its territory. After lunch, 17 mines exploded in the village of Hremiach. An automatic grenade launcher was also used.

The  ‘North’ Operational Command  reported that the russian military attacked the border areas of Chernihiv oblast three times: two villages in the Novhorod-Siverskyi region came under enemy fire.

Around noon, Kamianska Sloboda came under fire; there were three hits, probably from barrel artillery. Later, the enemy struck, probably with mortars, on the village of Mikhalchyna Sloboda also three times. A little later, the occupiers attacked the same settlement again – 12 mortar hits and two grenade launcher shots were counted.

In Chernihiv oblast, soldiers congratulated the children of their comrades who were killed in battle. The annual action “Protect the Country and Welcome the Child” was held in Chernihiv oblast: servicemen visited children who lost a loved one in battle, whose parents are in captivity or considered missing. Children were congratulated on the holidays and presented with gifts.

The police of the Chernihiv oblast reported that police officers seized a grenade with a fuse from a 38-year-old local resident while patrolling the city of Ichnia. Criminal proceedings have been opened. For such an offense, the law prescribes from 3 to 7 years of imprisonment.

Residents of Chernihiv were informed about training shootings. Citizens were informed about this by the ‘North’ Operational Command. Training is held on the outskirts of the city.

UAH 11,300 was paid for a walk with famous Patron the dog at a charity auction for the benefit of the Armed Forces of Chernihiv oblast. The largest amount was collected by football player Andrii Yarmolenko, who was given UAH 23K for an online meeting. The opportunity to meet with the head of the Chernihiv RMA was estimated at UAH 14,200.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, says that in Nikopol, the night was hectic. The enemy fired about 10 shells towards the city. Due to the shelling, 3 residential buildings, 2 utility buildings, a car, a gas pipeline and a power line were damaged.

Head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration Valentyn Reznichenko reports that in the afternoon, the Russians again covered the Nikopol region with fire. They shelled the town with heavy artillery, injuring a 64-year-old man. He is in hospital with severe chest lesions.  Enemy shells caused a private house to ignite. Up to 20 houses are mutilated.

Vinnytsia oblast

In Vinnytsia oblast, free housing for internally displaced persons was arranged. The houses were renovated, furniture and household appliances purchased to house 30 people in each settlement.

A master class on making Christmas Czech cookies “Wasp Nests” was held for internally displaced children in Vinnytsia. The event was attended by 13 children from Kharkiv, Kherson, Nova Kakhovka and other frontline cities.

Kirovohrad oblast

A number of charitable events were held in the Oleksandria community to buy thermal imagers for military personnel. After the charity auction Life in Despite, the fair of alternative Christmas trees and the online sale of photographs, UAH 88 K was raised for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Poltava oblast

According to Dmytro Lunin, Head of the Poltava Regional State Administration, in Poltava oblast, a modular town for internally displaced persons is being installed. Most of the houses have arrived. This is humanitarian aid to Ukrainians from Poland.  The town will consist of 240 modules for accommodating approximately 520 people. A module house is metal and equipped with basic needs with insulated windows and shutters, laminate flooring, a minimally equipped kitchen, a bathroom, a shower and a recreation area.

Volunteer Iryna Kaptur informs that 12 tons of humanitarian aid were brought to Poltava from Denmark. It will be distributed among the regions where hostilities continue. According to her, they brought, in particular, medicines, paraffin and generators.

Cherkasy oblast

According to Head of the Cherkasy State Administration Ihor Taburets, Cherkasy received another shipment of aid from UNICEF – 3K school bags with stationary. They are for schoolchildren of grades 5-9 who come from internally displaced and socially vulnerable families, as well as students of rural schools who study full-time.

In Uman, the families of defenders of Ukraine and concerned residents of the community held a rally, during which they called for the release of the captured Azovstal defenders.

Cherkasy communities received 37 Starlink stations. They will be installed at Invincibility Centres to provide them with a permanent Internet connection.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On January 3, at 10:48 p.m., the russian military fired S-300 missiles at the outskirts of Zaporizhzhia. A fire broke out at civil infrastructure facilities. According to preliminary data, two people were injured and nearby residential buildings damaged.

The occupiers shelled the settlements of Zaporizhzhia, Huliaipole, Novodanylivka, Dorozhnianka, Mali Shcherbaky, Stepove, Kamianske, Zaliznychne, Bilohiria, Plavni, Orikhiv, Novoandriivka, Olhivske, Charivne, Poltavka, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Huliaipilske. The police received 16 reports about the destruction of houses (apartments) and infrastructure objects as a result of shelling by russian military personnel.

The enemy defeat on January 2 near Tokmak, Melitopol, Berdiansk, Polohy and Vasylivka was confirmed. 2 ammunition depots, up to 10 units of military equipment were destroyed, 2 deployment points of the occupiers were damaged, and up to 260 servicemen of the armed forces of the russian federation were killed and wounded.

The General Staff reports on destroyed buildups of enemy manpower and military equipment near Tokmak on January 3. The enemy losses amounted to about 80 soldiers wounded and killed.

There was an explosion in the temporarily occupied Vasylivka. According to preliminary information, the explosion occurred in a hotel where the occupiers lived. This information was confirmed by the head of Vasylivka Serhii Kaliman.

Mykolaiv oblast

On January 3, at approximately 15:00, the enemy shelled a settlement in the Kutsurub community. As a result, residential buildings and farm buildings were damaged. There are no casualties.

Gas and electricity supply, damaged as a result of enemy shelling, are being restored. 15 teams were involved in the restoration of gas supply systems in liberated settlements. As a result of damage and destruction, more than 28K consumers in 88 settlements were left without gas and power supply for a long time. So far, power supply has been restored to 17,389 consumers in 17 settlements.

A truckload of fuel pellets from Latvia arrived in Mykolaiv oblast. The pellets will be used to heat communal infrastructure facilities.

Odesa oblast

On January 4, a sea mine was blown up in Odesa Oblast. The mine was carried to the beach. This was reported by the press service of the Naval Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

IREX’s Ukrainian Rapid Response Fund program, with the support of the US State Department, delivered a batch of critical aid, including 23 generators, to Odesa oblast. Aid and generators are distributed between Invincibility Centers and IDP centers in the regional communities.

Kherson oblast

On January 3, the russian occupiers shelled the territory of Kherson oblast 73 times. Kherson was attacked by the russian army 11 times. Enemy shells hit a shipyard,  a gas pipeline, private and apartment buildings. 2 people were killed and 5 more injured.

Yesterday, the police opened 41 criminal proceedings on the facts of war crimes committed by the russian army in Kherson oblast. Four people were killed by landmines. Another man was taken to the hospital with a mine-explosive injury and contusion.

The police continue to receive complaints from citizens about looting by the russian military during the occupation. The russian military stole cars, hunting weapons, and looted shops. The police are also establishing the location of 3 local residents of Kherson oblast who were detained by the occupiers. Currently, nothing is known about the fate of the men.

According to the Kherson RMA, more than 95% of Kherson is provided with electricity and water. About 80% of Kherson residents have central heating in their homes. In total, 75 out of 228 settlements have electricity in the liberated Kherson oblast, 46 out of 186 settlements – water supply, and 53 out of 88 settlements – gas supply.

Police officers handed over humanitarian aid from international organizations to the families with children born during the war in the Belozerka community. The aid includes baby food, diapers and toys.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The children’s battalion Banderivtsi from Rozhyshchen was presented with the award For Good Deed and a flag with the signatures of soldiers from the front line. The medal from the Mariupol separate battalion for support and aid to the Armed Forces of Ukraine was handed over to the young patriots by a fighter of this battalion, Yurii Khomych native of Lutsk.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA reported that in Khust,  a new playground was opened thanks to the EU grant project.

In Uzhgorod, the city program of military medical rehabilitation will operate. The program is aimed at rehabilitation of the locomotor apparatus of persons who took direct part in combat operations, and psychological rehabilitation at sanatorium-resort facilities. Rehabilitation treatment will last for at least 12 days. The 3 year program will cost UAH 5, 360K each year.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Head of the RMA, Svitlana Onyshchuk, reported that on January 4, military exercises were held in the oblast.

Thanks to the support of the famous Spanish surgeon Pedro Cavadas Rodrihes, the Carpathian military  received an ambulance. The car, worth approximately $15K, is fully equipped with all the necessary equipment for providing medical assistance to soldiers. Tactical military first-aid kits, walkie-talkies, and a generator provided by the Together for Ukraine CF will be supplied to the defenders.

From Ivano-Frankivsk, a car was sent to the Safari special forces regiment. The city mayor and his deputies donated funds for the car.

Lviv oblast

Lviv paratroopers received special equipment worth UAH 7, 645K from the Return Alive CF, namely walkie-talkies and copters for the 80th separate amphibious assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. 

The Rotary Club Lviv International purchased a 200 KW generator for the Lviv Regional Clinical Hospital. It will serve as a consulting polyclinic and other departments with operating and manipulation rooms.

The Lviv Regional Clinical Cardiocenter received an artificial blood circulation device. The equipment was provided by patrons from Germany, Freunde Helfen Konvoi, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Lviv International and the People’s Self-Defence of Lviv oblast.

In two communities of Lviv oblast, mobile medical teams are making trips to the settlements of Yavoriv and Lviv regions. They were created under the Memorandum of Cooperation between the health care department of Lviv oblast and the Lviv regional organization of the Red Cross Society.

In Lviv oblast, a dormitory was converted into a temporary accommodation for IDPs with 225 places. 55 rooms of the college in Chervonohrad were renovated for UAH 20 million.

A Christmas tree with embroidered balls with the names of all Ukrainian oblast centers was installed in one of the Strii clinics. The balls of the oblast centers are located according to the map of the state, and above them – an angel of the guardian of Independence.

Rivne oblast

The USAID project of local self-government delivered 20 excavators for the needs of territorial communities in Lviv, Poltava, Odesa, Rivne, Volyn, Zakarpattia and Zhytomyr oblasts. The excavators, worth almost $1.3 million, will be used by local authorities to repair and maintain heat networks destroyed by russian shelling.

Ternopil oblast

The campaign Sort Garbage and Help the Armed Forces of Ukraine started in the Chortkiv community. Preschoolers and school students can join this campaign. Children are asked to collect paper, cardboard and plastic. The funds from the sale will be donated to the needs of the military.

In the Bulche-Zolotetsk community of the Chortkiv region, humanitarian aid, namely, food, goodies, warm blankets, trench candles, etc, was collected for defenders.

Khmelnytskyi oblast
