War in Ukraine today: latest news, April 7, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 408th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian army launched 2 rocket and 14 air strikes, and conducted over 10 MLRS attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and the civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile and air strikes.

The russian army focuses its main efforts on offensive actions towards Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mariinka, where over 40 russian attacks were repelled by the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda, the operational situation has not changed significantly. There are no signs of formations of russian offensive groupings. Russia continues to strengthen fortifications in the border areas of its Kursk oblast. Russian troops shelled Leonivka and Hremyacn, Chernihiv oblast; Novovasylivka and Zarutske Sumy oblast; as well as Huryiv Kozachok, Verkhnya Pysarivka, Hrafske, Karaichne, Ambarne, and Bologhivka, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupyansk, the settlements of Topoli, Fiholivka, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Krokhmalne, Husynka, and Kindrasivka, Kharkiv oblast and Novoselivske, Luhansk oblast were subject to russian attacks.

Towards Lyman, russian soldiers conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the vicinity of Serebriansk Forestry and Verkhniokamiansk. Makiivka, Nevske, Dibrova, Kuzmine, and Belohorivka, Luhansk oblast; Spirne and Berestov, Donetsk oblast, suffered artillery attacks.

Towards Bakhmut, the russian army makes further attempts to seize the town of Bakhmut. Russian forces attempted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinities of Bohdanivka and Ivanivske, Donetsk oblast. Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled about 14 Russian attacks. Vasyukivka, Minkivka, Bakhmut, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Kurdiumivka, Bila Hora, Novodmytrivka, Druzhba, and Diliivka, Donetsk oblast,came under russian fire.

Towards Avdiivka and Mariinka, the russian army attempted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinityof Novokalynove, Severne, Pervomaiske, Marinka, and Pobieda. Marinka faced the fiercest fights. Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled more than 10 attacks on Marinka. At the same time, Novobakhmutivka, Avdiivka, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, Karlivka, Heorhiivka, Marinka, and Pobieda, Donetsk oblast, were subject to Russian attacks.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the russian army did not conduct offensive operations. However, russian troops shelled Vuhledar, Kermenchyk, Novomayorske, Zolota Nyva, Shakhtarske, and Velyka Novosilka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, russian soldiers keep herding defensive lines and fortifications. They shelled Vremivka, Donetsk oblast; Zatyshsha, Huliaipole, Hulyaipilske, Biloghira, and Kamianske, Zaporizhzhia oblast; Havrylivka, Beryslav, Vesele, Antonivka, Berehove, and Veletenske, Kherson oblast; as well as Kherson.

Russian troops continue the so-called “forced passportization” on the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts, exerting psychological and physical pressure on people. Russian military restricts movement of Ukrainian citizens without russian passport through previously established checkpoints. Russian troops purposefully and intentionally search vehicles, take records of all personal data of those citizens who do not have russian documents, and threaten them to restrict entry into the city.

Moreover, russian soldiers force local postmen to distribute registration forms to the local population, requiring them to specify data on the presence of russian passport. Citizens who do not have a russian passport are subject to constant searches, intimidation and coercion to obtain this document. Russian troops threaten forced eviction from their own homes and confiscation of private property if they refuse to receive a russian passport.

At the same time, the russian army threatens to restrict issuance of basic education certificates to the parents of senior school students. Russian troops are making them change the marriage certificates and the certificate of registration of technical means from Ukrainian to russian samples.

Ukrainian Air Force delivered 9 air strikes on the concentration of russian troops. In addition, 1 russian Su-25 attack aircraft was shot down near Mariinka.

Ukrainian rocket and artillery troops attacked 1 ammunition depot.

According to “Enerhoatom”, yesterday night the occupiers kidnapped 4 employees of Zaporizhzhia NPS. Their whereabouts are unknown. The situation is getting more tense. Occupiers are searching for people who are not reliable.  

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a bill to establish 19 military administrations in Zaporizhzhia oblast. It will take effect on April 7, 2023. 

Vitalii Matviinko, head of the russian soldiers surrendering program Want to live, reported the increase in the number of russian soldiers willing to surrender. For example, 3000 applications were filed in March which is twice as many as in previous months.


Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces reported that the russian federation shelled at least 13 settlements on the territory of the Kharkiv region.

Today, around 2:30 p.m., the occupiers shelled the village of Borysivka, Kharkiv district. According to the head of Kharkiv RMA Oleh Sinehubov, as a result of this shelling, a 39-year-old civilian man died.

This morning, Vovchansk in Chuhuiv district is again under fire. Three people tripped and were blown up on an unknown explosive device in a field near the village of Mykolaivka. The State Emergency Service reported that people received injuries of varying degrees of severity. 

Yesterday, the enemy shelled the border settlements of Kharkiv, Kupiansk, Chuhuiv and Bohoduhiv districts with barrel and rocket artillery, mortars and other weapons. Kupiansk, Vovchansk, Veterinarne, Ohirtseve, Vilkhuvatka, Dvorichna and other settlements were under enemy fire.

Yesterday, as a result of the shelling of the village, a private residential building of the Karaichne community of Vovchan was damaged, there were fires. As a result of yesterday’s shelling in Kupiansk, a private residential building and commercial buildings were destroyed. There were no casualties. 

Demining continues. Over the past day, pyrotechnicians of the State Emergency Service inspected more than 11 hectares of territory and neutralized 445 explosive objects.

Donetsk oblast

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of russia into Ukraine, 1459 people have been killed and 3360 have been wounded in Donbas.

In the area of Mariinka, Ukrainian soldiers destroyed Su-25 aircraft of the russian military, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The night in Donbas passed relatively calmly, but not without casualties and destruction.

At around midnight, the russians launched a missile strike on Sloviansk, destroying a private house.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar and Prechystivka came under fire, but there were no casualties.

Towards Donetsk, isolated shelling was recorded in Kurakhivska, Mariinka, and Ocheretin communities. In Kurakhivka, the territory of the former mine was damaged.

Towards Horlivka, one person was injured in Bakhmut. In Chasiv Yar, five houses were damaged by shelling. In Solidar community, three houses were damaged in Minkivka, and isolated shelling took place in Vasyukivka, Fedorivka, and Rozdolivka. Three private houses were damaged in Kostiantynivka.

Zvanivka and Pereizne came under fire towards Lysychansk, while there were loud explosions in Syversk and Serebrianka. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.

The russian army has shelled Donetsk region 13 times, hitting eight settlements with S-300, “Grad” and “Uragan” multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, tanks, and mortars. The army used “Uragan” multiple launch rocket systems to strike at Yampil, and “Grad” systems to hit Ocheretyn and Velyka Novosilka.

The russians wounded a civilian in Donetsk region, in Bakhmut, said the head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday, the enemy carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the Kreminna area. Novoselivske, Nevske, Dibrova, and Bilohorivka were subject to enemy artillery shelling.

Oleksiy Smyrnov, the acting head of the Luhansk Regional State Administration, emphasized that the motorized rifle units, tank, and airborne troops of the russian federation that operate in the region have been stuck on several fronts for a significant period of time and are only reducing their combat potential. In addition, thanks to Ukrainian well-coordinated defense, the enemy does not have a significant advantage in the air, which was observed in the first months of the invasion. Therefore, aviation did not become the component that they could dominate with.

Towards Svatove, Ukrainian border guards’ aerial reconnaissance, together with the artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, hit the next enemy targets. Thanks to adjustment, the location of the russians with the arsenal and the Ural truck was destroyed. The enemy’s losses of personnel have also been confirmed.

The sub-sanctioned bank-monopoly promises to resolve the issue of queues in the so-called “LNR” within a month, and the residents of the occupied cities have been without the internet for several months. The Luhansk Regional State Administration reported that they were offered to vote online.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Global 100% expert platform conducted a press conference in Kyiv to announce the signing of a cooperation agreement with German renewable energy associations. The memorandum aims to establish and maintain permanent contacts, strengthen cooperation between Germany and Ukraine in the renewable energy and climate sectors, and develop measures to protect the environment, accelerate the green transition, and enhance Ukraine’s green industries’ export potential.

The Kyiv City State Administration announced that on International Day of Sport, Kyiv citizens paid tribute to Ukrainian athletes and coaches who lost their lives during the ongoing war. The Angels of Sport project aims to showcase the stories of both fallen sports veterans and up-and-coming athletes. The project has collected 200 stories from athletes and coaches across Ukraine, including world and European champions, as well as multiple winners of national championships in Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

Meanwhile, the Kyiv City Council is seeking to terminate the land lease agreement with the Russian Embassy in Ukraine. The city’s MPs believe that this decision is justified due to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s declaration of the severance of diplomatic relations with Russia, as well as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The International Police Association from Estonia has donated a ton of dry dog food and specialized shoes to the Kyiv police dogs. According to the National Police of Ukraine, there are currently 56 dogs in service at the Kyiv police headquarters, who are actively involved in the search for weapons, explosives, and drugs, as well as in the detention of offenders and the search for missing persons.

The Kyiv Digital app has launched a new poll on renaming streets, parks, and squares with names associated with russia and its history. In total, Kyiv residents are offered to choose new names for 27 sites, including: Povitroflotskyi Avenue and the street of the same name, Pravdy Avenue, General Potapov Park, Chkalov Square, Labor Glory Park, Pushkin Park, and Mayakovsky Street.

On April 8, an outdoor exhibition will open on St. Sophia Square featuring drawings made by children who are waiting for their relatives to return from russian captivity. The exhibition is symbolically titled “I’m Waiting for You…” The organizers of the exhibition, the NGO Military Liberation and the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity, say that in this way they want to once again draw attention to those who are still in the hands of the invaders.

Zhytomyr oblast

Medical institutions of Zhytomyr oblast received 8 vehicles from UNICEF to help doctors visit families with children in distant communities. The Primary Healthcare Centres of Korostyshiv, Ovruch, Korosten, Stanyshivka, Brusyliv, Horodnya, Yemilchyno, and Olevsk communities will be even more accessible to their patients.

Also, “Care from Birth at Home” pilot programme is being implemented in the oblast. This programme provides a universal and progressive model of home visits to improve the medical and social care of families with children aged 0 to 3 years in the primary healthcare system.

Sumy oblast

On April 6, the russians opened fire 8 times at the border communities: Bilopillia, Hlukhiv, Seredyno-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske, Nova Sloboda, and Myropillia. According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, in total, there were 68 rounds fired from artillery, mortars, AGS, and UAVs dropping explosive ordnance. As a result of the shelling of Seredyno-Buda community, a hangar, 2 tractors, a car, and a grain storage facility were damaged. 

At night, Seredyno-Buda community was shelled from the territory of russia with an AGS. There were 6 explosions.

The State Environmental Inspectorate reported that a missile strike on Shostka conducted by the russian military on March 9, 2023, caused environmental damage worth over UAH 28 million. Environmental inspectors have determined that the ruins of buildings and structures damaged during the attack and other waste covered 6 land plots over 2,700 square meters, shell fragments cut many plants and completely destroyed 7 trees.

According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Sumy oblast is one of the leaders among other oblasts in changing topographic names. Over the past seven years, about 2,000 topographic names have been changed in the oblast, 60% of them in the past 7 months.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that over the past 24 hours, two communities in Chernihiv oblast came under russian fire. The enemy shelled Semenivka community with mortars. There were 4 explosions. The enemy fired 10 times at the border area of Novgorod-Siversky community with mortars, grenade launchers, and self-propelled artillery systems. There were 175 explosions.

According to Vyacheslav Chaus, the head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, there were 227 explosions on April 6 near Hremyach village, Novhorod-Siversky region. In particular, unguided aerial missiles were used, resulting in damage to a private house, outbuildings, a fire station, a rural health post, a shop, and a farm building. The shelling also damaged a power line, leading to a power outage in 4 settlements of Novgorod-Siversky community.

Throughout the full-scale invasion, almost 2,000 people have left the border settlements of the region. According to the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, heads of communities and RMAs are constantly working with the population on their temporary relocation, offering temporary accommodation and assistance with transportation.

Exhibition ‘Heroes Without Weapons’ dedicated to the workers of the critical infrastructure of Chernihiv opened in the Chernihiv Historical Museum. They bravely fought on their frontline ensuring operation of the critical infrastructure of the city under heavy fire during siege and active hostilities in February and March last year.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

An SUV for defenders was purchased in Kamyanske. The car will be sent to the front line, to a military unit, where one of the local residents is serving. The residents of Kamianske also collected goodies and clothes that will warm the military.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​ Dog therapy sessions for internally displaced children are held in Vinnytsia. They were organized by the “4 Paws” International Charitable Organization.

More than 40 “kikimora” camouflage nets for the Ukrainian defenders were woven by students of the lyceum in the city of Sharhorod,  Vinnytsia oblast. Labor training teacher Natalia Sidletska organized a volunteer group at the lyceum.

The volunteer headquarters of the “Ukrainian team” of Vinnytsia once again handed over 100 military tactical first-aid kits, which have various types of fasteners and camouflage, to the military. Aid was sent to the fighters towards  Zaporizhzhia, Lymany, to Bakhmut and Avdiiivka.

Kirovohrad oblast

Sisters from Kirovohrad oblast embroider chevrons for soldiers in the form of combat goslings. The idea to interpret the fake russian news about Ukrainian bio laboratories in this way belongs to one of the sisters, Tetiana Pedoruk. A warbird on chevrons symbolizes unity in the fight against the enemy.

Poltava oblast

Servicemen of the 123rd Battalion of the 113th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, who work towards Bakhmut, received humanitarian cargo from the Reshetylivka community, such as homemade baked goods, personal hygiene products, and tactical gloves to the soldiers, as well as schoolchildren’s drawings and a national flag with sincere words of support, written by the residents of the community.

Cherkasy oblast

According to Head of the Cherkasy State Administration Ihor Taburets, 20 pickup trucks were sent from Cherkasy for the new army corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, thanks to the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council. This powerful team of farmers has already handed over more than 550 cars to the military for the Victory.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Today, russian troops have once again attacked Orikhiv, causing significant damage to residential and civilian infrastructure. In some places, the homes of peaceful residents have been completely destroyed.

Russian troops have increased the intensity of shelling on the demarcation line. Yesterday, the occupiers carried out 92 artillery shelling, 6 attacks with MLRS, 11 UAV attacks, and 2 air strikes. 31 new reports of destruction have been recorded: russian shells have partially damaged apartments, smashed homes, agricultural structures, property, cars, and agricultural machinery. The enemy launched 111 strikes along the demarcation line during the day.

Russian occupiers are actively continuing the forced passportization of the population in the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. The enemy restricts the movement at checkpoints of those Ukrainian citizens who have not received russian federation passports. Also, the enemy forces the mail carrier to distribute forms to the local population, which must indicate information about the presence of a russian passport. Citizens who do not have an enemy passport are subjected to constant searches, intimidation, and forced to obtain this document.

In the evening of April 6, the occupiers kidnapped four employees of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and took them in an unknown direction. This was reported today by Enerhoatom.

The military personnel of the “Vovky” aerial reconnaissance unit of the 74th battalion of the 102nd brigade of the Territorial defence force destroyed russian ammunition depots. This was reported by the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov.

A medical hub for IDPs has started operating at the Melitopol space “Sametut” in Zaporizhzhia.  The center provides medical assistance to internally displaced persons from all regions of Zaporizhzhia oblast. Doctors from temporarily occupied Melitopol region work at the medical hub, which will operate once a week. The day of admission will be announced in advance through social media.

Mykolaiv oblast

This morning, the enemy shelled the city of Ochakiv with cluster and incendiary ammunition – shells hit residential buildings, shops, and civilian infrastructure in the city. According to the Mykolaiv RMS, two residents received blast and fragmentation injuries, one of them is in critical condition.

In March, Mykolaiv oblast received more than 400 modular houses, which can accommodate up to 2K people. They are intended for people who have lost their homes and for the internally displaced persons. These houses will be provided for use for a period of up to 6 months and will be transported as needed. In addition, it is expected that Mykolaiv oblast will receive several more modular houses in the future.

Mykolaiv received a thousand ceramic infrared heaters worth a total of UAH 3,795,000 from its partners. The devices will be used to heat the premises of social institutions. The equipment was purchased with funds from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Ukraine under the project “Democratic Governance in Eastern Ukraine” (DG East).

Odesa oblast

The night of April 6 to 7 passed relatively calmly in Odesa oblast: without air raid sirens or shelling. However, the threat of missile or drone strikes is not ruled out for the region. As of yesterday evening, the enemy naval group in the Black Sea consisted of nine units maneuvering near the southeastern coast of Crimea. According to the South Operational Command all missile carriers were taken to their bases due to a powerful storm.

17 ships carrying Ukrainian foodstuffs have left the ports of Odesa over the past week. More than 500K tons of grain were exported. Overall, 857 ships have exported nearly 27 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products from the ports of Odesa since the beginning of the “Grain” Initiative.

Cars with Easter pastries from the Odesa Bread Factory are already heading to Kherson, which is under constant shelling. As noted by the production team, the first 10K Easter bread loaves (Paska) were sent to Kherson in recent days. Another batch is planned to be delivered soon to displaced persons and territorial defense forces.

Kherson oblast

The enemy attacked Beryslav again. An ambulance brigade, which was responding to a call, came under artillery fire. Two paramedics were injured.

In the morning, the russians shelled Stanislav with artillery. A shell hit a residential building. Three people were injured, including two children.

On April 6, the russian occupiers shelled peaceful settlements in Kherson oblast 46 times, firing 258 shells from mortars, artillery, multiple rocket launchers, tanks, drones, and aircraft. The russian army attacked residential areas in Kherson 7 times and targeted critical infrastructure, park areas, private and multi-story buildings. Six people were injured, and one person was killed due to russian shelling. Police opened 17 criminal proceedings for war crimes committed by the russian army in Kherson oblast.

A 22-year-old man suffered a mine-explosion facial injury near the village of Arkhanhelske while attempting to clear landmines on his own.

Electricity has been restored for 146 out of 228 settlements in liberated areas of Kherson oblast. Today, power was restored to Khrystenivka, the Nova Vorontsovka community and Arkhangelske, the Vysokopillia community.

The Kherson regional communal emergency and rescue service received a powerful generator from the Volyn regional state administration and the Swedish aid center to assist with emergency and restoration work in Kherson oblast.

Volunteers brought humanitarian aid to the village of Chornobaivka, delivering hygiene kits and corrugated roofing sheets to local residents.

Thirty-six containers of school furniture were brought from Poland to Kherson oblast. Some of the cargo were distributed to Kyselivskyi lyceum.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk hosted the forum “Integration of IDPs in Volyn: problems, solutions, and the role of the IDP Council.” Among the participants are IDPs, representatives of public organizations, businesses, regional and local authorities. The creation of the IDP Council was discussed.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Vynogradiv City Council held a meeting with representatives of the Romanian delegation within the framework of the HUSKROUA international cross-border project “Integrated solutions for improving medical and preventive services in the cross-border region”.

The mini-clinic of the Red Cross Society, in the city of Rakhiv, received a modern portable ultrasound machine of expert class and other medical equipment from the Czech Red Cross.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The Kolomyia military administration held a charity auction at which it was possible to collect UAH 1 million 170K for the needs of the 10th separate mountain assault brigade. Almost 100 participants took part in the event and four dozen lots were sold.

Lviv oblast

Soon, the first phase of the ultra-modern clinic for prosthetics, reconstruction and rehabilitation of soldiers and civilians “Superhumans Center” will open in Lviv oblast. All services for people affected by war will be free.

The Brodiv City Council signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Red Cross Society of Ukraine. There are plans to create a youth center in Brody. In addition, they will join forces to provide humanitarian aid and other support to people affected by the hostilities of the country or in crisis situations.

The Obroshyn community sent specialized emergency and rescue equipment for units of the State Emergency Service in Lviv oblast from German benefactors. Instead, firefighters from the Obroshyn Voluntary Fire Brigade received a new hydraulic tool within the framework of cooperation with the USAID HOVERLA project.

The Okhmatdyt regional children’s hospital received a portable ventilator and Tecotherm NEO thermoregulation system from benefactors, including international ones.

In Zhydachev, members of the Young Forest Rangers Club of School #3 planted 60 cherry saplings in honor of defenders of Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

The Department of Education and Science of the RMA reported that during the military academic year, the total number of students increased by 4K. In total, 33K people are currently studying – 21K in institutions of higher education and 11,9K in institutions of vocational pre-higher education.

Ternopil oblast

The Humanitarian Committee of the Verkhovna Rada supported the resolution on terminating the lease agreement with the UOC of the moscow patriarchate in the Pochaiv Lavra. This Lavra is the second largest Orthodox shrine in Ukraine after Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, located in Ternopil oblast.

The RMA reported that 50 posthumous state awards were given to the families of fallen soldiers from Ternopil oblast.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA held a meeting on issues of public support for veterans participating in hostilities. They discussed the adoption of a rehabilitation/rehabilitation program, the creation of a center for servicemen and veterans at the regional level (veteran space), the creation of departments/sectors in regional state administrations to work with servicemen, organization and establishment of appropriate work at the level of territorial communities.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Serhiy Levchuk, representative of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language. They discussed the implementation of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State Language” and the importance of observing language legislation in all spheres during martial law.

In Chernivtsi as part of the All-Ukrainian project, on the basis of the Main Office of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Chernivtsi oblast, opened a “Safety Classroom”. Here, rescuers will conduct classes for school students on fire, mine safety, etc.

The main department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Chernivtsi oblast received humanitarian aid, namely, inflatable boats, sets of alpine equipment, motor pumps and water treatment stations within the framework of the project “Security and protection – a common factor of cross-border cooperation”. The project is financed by the Joint Operational Program “Romania – Ukraine 2014-2020” and is implemented by the Suceava County Council (Romania).

The donor, with whose funds the purchase was made, is the Danish Energy Company.
